IWeb 3.0.1 won't publish my site. I am stuck in a time warp

Hello. I just upgraded to iWeb 3.0.1 from an earlier, primitive version and now I have the following problem trying to publish updates to my website (which was created in iWeb in the place). When I try to publish, I am presented with a "Try MobileMe!" splash screen. Now, I don't want to try "MobileMe", so I politely decline, whereupon the publishing process goes no further. What I want to do is to publish to a folder, which is what I used to do, and upload from there.
I have tried reinstalling my old version of iWeb but that seems not to be able to identify or open my old site; it wants me to start a new one.
I am running 10.6.2 on a MacBook.
Any help gratefully received.
Simon

  • IWeb Won't Publish my Site

I have a pretty simple, 5-page website with some photos on each that I am attempting to publish. I've tested the connection, and was successfully able to log in and receive the info box indicating that I can now publish my site. I continue to publish it, but when I do, I don't receive any indication that anything has been uploaded, the Publish Site button is grayed out, and if I attempt to quit iWeb it tells me that it is currently publishing a site and that I should not quit. Has anyone run into this, and can help me?

If you are using the iWeb FTP, try using the publishing settings shown in the first example on this page...

  • IWeb won't publish my site, unspecified error

i've been trying for the whole day now to publish my iweb site
every time, it get half way through uploading then simply bums out
it says there was an error publishing the site
that a certain file couldn't be uploaded
it's a different file each time
i'm really annoyed that i'm paying for a service i'm not getting!
    i'm using iweb 09 on a g4 emac osx 10.5.6
adsl 1500 kbps connection, only computer using the internet
all firewalls and virus programs disabled
    can anyone please help!

    MobileMess, lol, i like that
yes, the prob is in publishing, not iweb itself
that is, its a problem uploading to apple's webdav server
I have been able to publish my site, and this is how...
Create a new site in iweb
one by one, move each page across to the new site just by drag and drop
with each page, go File > Publish Site Changes
Once all files are moved over, the original site is automatically deleted
From iWeb that is, you'll need to delete the site folder through iDisk
effectively this publishes each page seperately
all links seem to be preserved quite well
my theory is that apple's server can't handle too many files in one upload
it's getting gunked up and timing out half way through the process
uploading each file seperately seems to solve this problem
once they're uploaded, small changes also upload ok
i have since found this issue prevelant in these forums
it seems to be a major issue with iweb, or more specifically, mobileme webdav
i seriously doubt apple is going to work on this issue for us
so for the time being, small uploads seem to be the answer
    hope this helps!

  • IWeb 08 won't publish my site when "private" - "Publish Error"

I have created two sites in iWeb. The first is for general viewing, the second (still under construction) is to be restricted by "Make my published site private" username and password. I can publish both sites as "open sites" without problem, but when I try to publish after I check the privacy box for Site 2, I get a "Publish Error" during the publishing process. Any thoughts appreciated.

  • Publishing error - iweb won't publish my site

I cannot get iweb 08 to publish my site. I get this error "Publishing error iWeb couldn’t connect to .Mac. Make sure your Internet connection works and try again." However, my iDisk updates just fine, so I must be connecting to .mac, right? Also, when I go to mac.com I'm able to sign in fine. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. I tried that and it didn't work. It seems that the problem was caused by a quicktime video being too large. I re-rendered the video to a smaller size and it published just fine. Thanks for your suggestion. I appreciate it.

  • Iweb 08 - vimeo movie won't play when site is live

Hello. Please can someone help with this. I built a site yesterday on iWeb 08. It includes a movie downloaded from Vimeo and dropped into a movie page in iWeb.
Everything's fine on the iWeb page but there is no movie on the 'live' site. Any ideas what I've done wrong. Is there a good link (for dummies!0 to show me how to do this? Many thanks.

Check your account folder on the hosting service to make sure the video got uploaded.
Or use the File ➙ Publish Entire Site menu option to  upload all of the files again.

  • Comments show up in iWeb, but don't appear on published MobileMe site??

This seems to be a pretty recent problem, perhaps with the latest update?
So I have enabled comments on my blogs, and in iWeb, the "comment" option shows up. Comments worked previously, because I had several people who had left me comments... NOW, when I publish my site (through MobileMe), the option to leave a comment doesn't even show up on my site. What is going on, here? Needless to say, I am FRUSTRATED! Any help, advice would be great, a solution would be even better.
    Thanks!

It can often be a problem with MobileMe that comments don't show up.
What is your url so that we can see what the problem is?

  • Iweb photo galley page won't publish

I made a photo albaum page for my website in iweb. I made the albuams in iphoto. When I publish, my galleries do not show up on the page. I see them in iweb but not on the internet when i pull the page up. Any suggestions?

I just checked... they publish in Safari but not firefox. Any ideas to make this work?

  • Won't publish my site the way it is laid out in iWeb

I am having issues with my site not publishing the way I want it to. I made anchors (links to text on the same web page) by using html snippets/widgets and in iWeb everything works fine. But online it doesn't and the layout is messed up. Any ideas? Here is the page that is not working:
    http://isabelmargaret.com/LYRICS.html
    THANKS!!

set up anchors using html snippet widgets *is a bad idea*.
    1) there is no way to insert html snippet widgets inside text box, they are floating outside text box.
    2) text box rendered differently with different browsers, as you can see when it is a very long text box.
combine #1 and #2, it's all askew, as you see in your page.
    3) any time you change/delete/add or move html snippets, you will have make sure all the links are still good.
    4) anchor with html snippet widgets totally fails in firefox, you can't scroll up after jumped to the anchor.
    give them feedback: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html
that said, it can be done (with style) with Scriptaculous:
    http://iweb3widgets.cyclosaurus.com/Anchors/Anchors.html

  • ATTN APPLE GUYS iWeb comments link not working on published photos site

When you publish a photo site (theme black) to mobileme and check the allow comments check box the link does not work on the published site. You cannot add comments.

This is a users help forum and people from Apple do not look at these pages. If you have problems, then you need to contact Apple directly and let them know.
Lots of others here have had problems with comments not being allowed on blogs and it is not just one theme either, it seems to be across the board. There are lots of threads about it here and I believe some have contacted Apple and they say they are working on fixing it. It is to do with the transition from .Mac to MMe.

  • Could not use imported fonts, won't publish my site... total disaster

This version *****... first could not use previously installed fonts then I lost the entire published version. now can't bring up my blog... I published to .mac and only shelleypiser.com comes up but cannot get writeonyoga.com
I want my old version back this one needs to be thrown out and start again. does anyone know why the imported fonts cannot be used to other computers? it came up with big ugly letters. none of the geniuses or procare brains knew what to do....

Embedding a font does not make it available in Illustrator or any other program. (Exception, Acrobat is able, and must, use the font to correctly draw the page.)
If there are missing fonts when opening a pdf in Illustrator, the fonts are not installed on the machine.
As Bob said, "Illustrator is not a pdf editor!". It can, and is abused for such, all to often, with caveats.

  • My Time Capsule won't back up. It's stuck on 'calculating time remaining'. Any ideas?

My Time Capsule started playing up again lately, it simply won't back up and it appears that nothing is actually backed up on it at all. I've had it for over two years and have had trouble with it in the past. I just wonder if it is faulty. Do I need to take it into an Apple shop to get techinical assistance or is it something I'm doing wrong with the back-ups?
    Cheers,
    Cathie

If you live near an apple store I am sure a Genius can check it for you.. but unless it brings up a fault condition, I doubt it is faulty.
The TC does nothing at all.. really it is a hard disk in a router.
TM is software on the computer and it can have loads of issues.
I strongly recommend using the info from pondini to help you analyse the problem.
I also recommend you download and try out some other backup utilities. The plain fact of it, TM is too complicated for its own good.
A simple way to check is to plug a USB drive into the computer and make a Time Machine backup to that drive instead of the TC.. if it works. the issue is more likely the network than anything.. and with each update more and more network problems are creeping in.
From your profile you are using Snow Leopard.. which was highly stable and reliable.. but my guess is the latest acting up is because you installed Mavericks???
    TM widget. A1
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Because otherwise you have no idea what TM is actually doing.
A4, do a full TM reset.
A5 because long prep times are often the result of corrupt drives.
It can also be network.. is the TC plugged in by ethernet to the main router.. and by ethernet to the computer. If it is wireless joining the network, it will never be reliable.

  • Safari won't display a site correctly, sometimes page takes extended time to respond and partially loads other times images wont load

So I have a friend who I've been trying to assist with this. I don't know if she has issues with other sites or she may not have encountered any yet, but one in particular is just not working. It started about a month ago around the time she moved (so different ISP/router etc.) though not entirely sure if it started right after that or if it was just coincidence. Anyways she cleared cookies/cache, no luck. I had her update and restart the computer, still not working. Disabled all extensions, still doesn't work. It can take upwards of 30-45 seconds to even respond in some cases, and when it does sometimes the page is all white with just text improperly formatted, but the background doesn't display at all, other times the background images and text are displaying correctly but the nearly all the user submitted images on the site (deviantart) will not display. I believe she mentioned it occasionally happened on tumblr as well.
Other computers on her network are fine. I downloaded Firefox to see if it was a problem that persisted across browsers and indeed it did. So I went into the console on Firefox and looked at further information and it was returning Status Code 304 Not Modified which I looked up and that says it is telling the browser that the images should be loaded from cache. Problem with that is she shouldn't have any cache as its been cleared. I searched around this issue, found a suggestion saying to clear DNS cache, tried that and suddenly Firefox worked. I then logged into her username on DeviantArt through Firefox and suddenly the issues returned. I eventually was able to log out and things worked again. Now when I log into her account through Firefox it works fine. Safari still has issues.
I've even deleted the cache.db file in the library/safari folder and quit/restarted Safari and still no success. I've tried disabling cache through the developer options. The status code 304 error made me believe that the reason the images weren't showing up is because there is no cache for those images but the server is telling the browser to use the cache so the images cannot load. One last thing I can mention is that on the console in Safari, it often just returns many errors for all the images on the site saying it didn't respond. One time there were errors saying something about the security certificate but I refreshed numerous times after that and that error never showed up again in the console. Anyone know what might be causing this?

    Hi ...
Start here >  Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found
If nothing helped from that link, try troubleshooting Safari plug-ins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safai > Preferences then the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

I'm using a Mac. After swithcing to ICloud will I be able to use IWeb to upload and publish my sites hosted by other servers like Prohosting ?

iWeb has two other ways to publish your site...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Publish-Website.html
... and the second method allows you a choice of how you upload the files...

    Here's a publishing workflow checklist...

The MobileMe only features can be replaced by alternatives...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Comments-Password-Protect.html
If you have folders of assets outside of the main website folder on MobileMe, download them from the Apple server. From the Finder Go menu, follow the path iDisk/My iDisk/ to get there. Your website files are in the Web/Sites folder. Drag any files/folders onto the desktop.
Use an FTP application to upload these assets to the root folder on your new server...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/Upload.html
...and change the relevant URLs to...
    http://www.domain-name.com/Folder-Name/file-name.file-extension
There are lots of options for hosting for about half the cost of MobileMe...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Website-Hosting.html
If you have been using a web.me.com domain name, you need to register a new one. Most hosting services give you at least one free and registering with your hosting company will make forwarding and managing it a lot easier.
Make sure you add the new name to Google and create, upload and enter a new sitemap.xml...

If you have inbound links on other sites...

... remember to inform the webmasters of you new URL.

  • Help! My iweb won't publish through my hosting company!

I have been bounced back and forth between my host and apple support re:iweb publishing and html codes that can't be added but need to in order for my server/host to be able to publish.....this is what my hosting company last sent me....
We were not able to do a perminate fix for all of the server for customers using iweb, since making it workable for you it causes problems for other people that are hosted with us as well. You will just have to remove that line of code from the top of your page
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
This code is not compatible with most to all hosting providers, if you decide to cancel and go with another host please check out MobileMe through the Apple Network. From my research they provide the best support for iWeb Application.
    Pappashop Web Hosting
Has anyone else ran into this issue? If so what do I do now? I am not able to add HTML code changes to iWeb. HELP!!
    Thanks,
    BeadzBabe

Well, no, you won't be able to edit code in iWeb itself, because there is nothing to edit - the code is not produced until you publish your site, so you need to publish your site to a local folder and then you will be able to edit the code by using either TextEdit or TextWrangler.
I think you should just ditch your present host and go and sign up for a hosting account with either GoDaddy or HostExcellence. A lot of people on the forum use both these hosting companies and have no problem loading iWeb created sites - they do not seem to have a problem where you need to alter code before you can publish.
