IWeb ads "site" to my domain

Ilike iWeb. It's easy to use and makes me feel more powerful and artistic than I really am. :-) A sign of any great software. However I don't like the way it appends my domain from http://XXX.XXX.com to http://XXX.XXX.com/site.
It really bugs me for some reason. I've been to many sites that claim to have been made with iWeb and they don't show the "site" at the end of their url.
Is there any way to hide this or change it to reflect the current page of the site a reader is on? Maybe it's a limitaion of my domain host?
Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks.

What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand?  If you're using CNAME domain name forwarding that's what you'll get: http://www.domain_name.com/Site_Name/Page_Name.html.  There's no easy way around it.
You could use standard URL domain name forwarding with masking which would give you  http://www.domain_name.com for all pages.
However, there are drawbacks to using domain name forwarding with masking:
Visitors can only enter your web site via the first page.
Visitors can only bookmark the first page of your site.
If a visitor refreshes a page they will be taken back to the first page of the site.k
Search engines will only be able to use the first page of your site for indexing and rating your site.
Your site will be somewhat isolated from search engines and visitors.  Once you get visitors to your site with the simple domain name, what's in the URL window is superfluous. Visitors will pay more attention to a well designed site with contents that they are interested in rather than what's in the URL field of the browser.
You can get rid of the site name if you publish your site to a folder on your hard drive and upload just the contents of the site folder to your root folder on the server.  With MobileMe that would be the iDisk/Web/Site folder.
With some 3rd party hosts, like HostExcellence.com, when you get a domain name the folder to which you upload the site will be named the same as the domain name.  This page explains how it works with HostExcellence: Using HostExcellence - iWebFAQ.org
If you're currently with MobileMe you know that MMe will be discontinued on June 30 of next year.  With that in mind this may be of interest to you: #23 - Life After MobileMe

  • How can I edit my iweb published site when the domain file is empty?

How can I edit my iweb site when the domain file opens up empty? I have the site backed up in mobile me, on my computer, and on an external hard drive.
How can I transfer these files into iweb?

    Hi there,
To edit your site from one of your backed up versions, place the Domain file in User>Library>Application Support>iWeb & then launch iWeb. Update & publish.

  • Uploading iweb layout/site to personal domain

I'm using FireFTP through Firefox to upload my site designed on iWeb. However, once uploaded and I visit my site images don't show up, fonts are wrong and some text doesn't show.
I'm getting really frustrated, I've tried the other free FTP's and they don't work either. How do I fix this problem?

Will I just send my whole "site" folder to my public folder at my personal domain?
You send the folder created by iWeb which has the same name as you gave your site inside the iWeb app, plus the index.html file which iWeb created alongside that folder.
How will I update each day?
By publishing again to a folder and uploading again via ftp.
(Can I set up iWeb so that when I click "publish" it will update my personal domain?)
No. If iWeb could do that you would not need an ftp program to start with.
I was planning on using some wordpress plugins to modify my site.
No idea, but generally speaking modifying iWeb to add stuff requires manual editing of the html after publishing and redoing it every time you republish.

  • How to move iWeb site with missing Domain.sites file

I've been asked to host a friend's iWeb site now that MobileMe is no longer an option.  The problem is that the MacBook it was created with is long gone and the only original files remaining are the image files for the site. No Domain.sites file.  They are also not sure which version of iWeb was used, if that even matters.  Initially I was thinking we could just access the existing site using ftp and go from there - upload the site to my hosting account and use Dreamweaver to maintain it, but everything I've read seems to point to 'Not gonna happen that way'.
Is there a way to transfer an existing iWeb site hosted on MobileMe to a new hosting account and be able to work on it with another editor, all the while not having the original Domain.sites(2) file?
    Thanks much,
    Mark

Quite a few people are moving to other drag and drop style editors like Sandvox and RapidWeaver although they aren't really any better - just more expensive.
I advise people not to use iWeb for new sites and just to keep it going to update existing ones until they are defunct or rebuilt some other way.
I quit using iWeb about a year ago due to the fact that it, and similar apps, can't create responsive designs for mobile devices although I did figure out a stop gap design for iPhones...

  • Multiple Web Sites with Personal Domain Names - Overview

I have read through the last 10 pages of these discussions and have almost worked this out, but I need some help.
    Problem:
I want to publish and edit two separate web sites with their own, individual, personal web addresses
from the same user account on the same Mac using iWeb '08 (2.0.2) and my .Mac account
    _So far:_
I have purchased and registered the two domain names (with Cheap-DomainRegistration.com)
I have configured the CNAME to point to web.mac.com, and "Set up a Personal Domain" in iWeb successfully, but using a separate Mac for each web site.
    The two sites work great.
_What (I think) I need to know:_
(excuse me for copying these posts out, but I can't find a way to link them to this post)
    1) Should I be using iWebSites as suggested by Old Toad (posted Jan 24 in response to StAnNe's "Multiple Websites--HELP!!!")?
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
    2) Should I be using Mireille's approach (also posted Jan 24 in response to StAnNe's "Multiple Websites--HELP!!!")?
Yes you are correct in the thought that with a family pack you can use different accounts and that is the easiest way to upload with one click to .mac. But it is still possible to publish differents sites to one .mac account if that is all one has. Even if the sites are in one domain file each purchased mysite.com domain name purchased can be pointed to a different page in the site
    Look at it this way
    Original Poster has
site1 page 1 page 2 and so on
then he/she has brothersite page 1 and so on.
They each have a domain name purchase wherever
then site1domain.com is forwarded to site 1 page1
and brotherdomain.com is forwarded to brothersite page 1.
Even though both sites are in the same file they do not have anything to do with each other.
This is one possibility there are others but for a novice user this could be the way to go for simplicity.
(Mireille, if you're there, can you clarify what you said - thank you)
    3) Would I use Roddy's fix (posted Jan 23 in response to canadensis' "Publishing Multiple Websites?")?
Here's an example of how you can separate two websites that are on the same domain file.
    Quit iWeb
Create a new folder on your desktop and call it "iWeb Sites".
Inside this folder create two more - Website A, Website B.
Go to Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb and copy your domain file - command C
Paste this into folders A and B - command V - and also paste a copy of it somewhere else - like in Docs - in case you make a mistake!
Double click the domain file in the folder Website A - this will launch iWeb.
In the left column, delete site B, save and quit iWeb.
Double click the domain file in the folder Website B to launch iWeb.
Delete website A, save and quit.
Drop the iWeb sites folder into your Home Folder.
If you want quick access to this folder you can highlight it and do command L to create an alias to leave on the desktop.
From now on, to launch any site in iWeb you open its folder in the iWebsites folder and double click the domain file.
This is not necessary when you are working on only one site as iWeb saves the domain file of the last site you were working on to Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb. When you open the iWeb application, the last site you worked on will be launched.
    Summary:
I'm not sure if some of the answers in previous discussions allow for personal domain names, which is what I need.
I would be very grateful for any suggestions as I'm getting bogged down.
    Many Thanks,
    Jeff

When you said, "you don't need to do CNAME for both sites…", would this method still allow me to use personal web addresses for both sites?
Yes. With "Ordinary Forwarding" you normally just type your .Mac url (web.mac.com/username/sitename) into a form at the place where you have your name.
I thought I was using 'web.mac.com' as the 'www' CNAME (alias) for my personal domain name (web address), so that when someone typed in my personal domain name they would 'go' to the domain registration location, which would then pass it on to the .Mac server, where my web site is hosted.
That's exactly right. It's just not the only way to do that. Ordinary Forwarding is another way, but it differs in terms of what appears in the address bar of the browser. Either you will see web.mac.com/username/.... or, if you add "masking", you will see your personal name for all pages. The CNAME method results in a address bar that reads www.myname.com/sitename/pagename.html.
    Am I way off?
    All help gratefully received,
    Jeff

  • How to publish custom web site with own domain name?

Hey out there. I wonder if anyone can give me any tips on how to publish a web site with my own domain name.
I have a web site I'm building and I want to purchase a domain name and then publish the site using that domain name.
I know how to buy a domain name. I have a .mac account so I'm hoping that .mac can host the site. What I don't quite understand how to do is get .mac to host the site using that domain name. I looked through Apple Support but couldn't find what I was looking for. Just wondering if anyone has been in this situation. Thanks in advance.
    Dave
    [email protected]

Dave ~ Welcome to the discussions. .Mac was re-branded as MobileMe last July. If you're not building your site with iWeb, it's considered to be a "custom" website. These Apple docs may help:
MobileMe: How to publish a custom website
iWeb ’08: Using your own domain name
...Use this search page to find such documents:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search
Note that you don't need to have iLife '08 to be able to direct your domain name to your custom website published to MobileMe. As someone wrote on another thread:
"My personal domain is linked to my MM but i don't even have ilife on my mac. When you go to the options in MM to link your personal domain to your MM it provides directions that will guide you with setting up your godaddy settings."
    ...Where "MM" is MobileMe here:
    http://me.com/account
...+Personal Domain+ tab, and "godaddy" is wherever your domain name is registered.

  • Google finding iWeb mobileme site

I have an iWeb mobileme site and a separate domain name linked. Google can't find it.
Does a site have to be hosted separately for this to happen?

In terms of SEO, iWeb sites aren't that different from any other site. It's slightly more challenging to accomplish some things, but for the most part, you can nail all of the important on-page optimizations on iWeb that you could if you were to have an HTML/CSS website.
But anyways, if your site isn't commercial and traffic isn't a big issue for you, then you don't really need to worry about SEO or hosting. If you want to be found to some degree, ie. typing your site URL into Google, then you just need to create and submit an XML Sitemap and you're good to go.

  • Multiple sites and personal domain

    Hi everyone!
I'm having a problem with iWeb 08. Here's the details:
Using iWebsite and iWeb '08 I've created 2 websites, one for personal use and one for my business.
Now I'm interested in buying a personal domain for my business website.
How can I do to set the personal domain only to my business site, leaving the personal one unchanged?
    Cheers,
    Samuele

An easy way to manage multiple sites is either iWebSites or MultiSite.
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want. Works for me.

  • Creating multiple web sites for separate domain names

Is it possible to create a different web site using a different web address in IWeb 06? A friend asked me to make a web site for them....can/how do I publish it to a different address?
    Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The best way is to have a separate domain name for each site you want to manage. When you publish the sites each will have a separate URL. It will be:
    http://web.mac.com/your .Mac account name/the site folder name/index.html
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • Restoring iWEB 08 sites

    Hi,
I am really hoping that someone can help here!
Last week my HD died in my 6 month old Macbook - now good. Anyway, now that I have stopped crying, and have a new hard disk etc - its onwards and upwards!
So, I have a .MAC account, and my main iweb site is published to this. How can I get this back into iWEB or do I really have to recreate it?
2nd - I also used iWEB to create a number of other sites which are hosted elsewhere. Same thing, how can I get these back into iWEB?
I fear the worst here - and quite frankly if that is the case that everything needs to be re-created then thats a pretty poor show, but at the moment I am keeping the fail and looking forward to a reply for some of you experts
    Thanks in advance
    Richard

You can have all your sites on one domain file - this is the standard way of doing things.
Its easier if you split the up so that you can load them into iWeb separately and publish them individually.
You can do this by using the freeware application iWebsites...
    http://mistergregg.com/cocoadrillosoftware/iWebSites/
Or you can do it manually ....

  • Getting rid of iWeb ghost site

    Hi
I posted a little while ago about how my iWeb site deleted itself - as in, on the actual program, all the files relting to my site just went poof.
Well, this was after I published it, so it is actually online - just I can't make any edits or anything. It's like a ghost site.
Anyway, now I've installed wordpress to that same domain, so how do I get rid of my iWeb site? It's so strange; on Wordpress, when I click 'view site', my old iWeb site comes up, yet when I view the default 'hello world' post from Wordpress, the default empty Wordpress blog comes up.
I just want it to be Wordpress now. Had enough of iWeb. Want it to disappear so that when you type in my URL, you just see the Wordpress site.

Entering your domain name in the browser opens the index.html file that's present in the root folder on the server.
Use an FTP application, or your hosts file manager, to delete the iWeb site folder and the external index.html file.

  • Open iWeb '08 site in iWeb 09

I am trying to add new material to my existing web site (created in iWeb '08). But I don't know how to open the site in iWeb '09. Unfortunately, the "Domain" has been overwritten the first time I opened iWeb '09. How can I migrate an iWeb html page into iWeb '09 to update it?
    Thanks in advance

Hi, I am having the same problem. I created a website with blog and pictures using iweb 08 a week ago on mac. Now, I have new mac with iweb 09. I opened it, and it just gives you the option to create a new one? I did not save, so my original site is still there. How do I work on my site using iweb 09? I want to add some more entries onto my blog and add some more pictures from a trip.
There has got to be a way to do this?
    Thanks,

  • Combine iWeb 08 sites in iWeb 09

I used to have a few .sites2 documents in iWeb 08 for maintaining more than one website.
In iWeb 09 it is possible to maintain more sites in one .sites2 document and publish them separately. That is a great benefit for me.
However I would like to know if there is a way to import multiple iWeb 08 domain sites into one iWeb 09 document. I can import one, but I don't see how to import another in the same document.
    Anyone?

I agree with Roddy. I use iWebSites to manage over 40 individual sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process and move it to another location on your HD until you're satisfied the separation process is completed and what you want.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
My family site has over 45 pages, each a separate site linked together by a entry/welcome site. That facilitates quicker opening and editing of a page rather than having an enormous single file opened. If something goes wrong with one site, i.e. damaged the entire family site is not affected. I have 3 demo sites that were once one site. It got so big and clumsy to open and use that I broke it down into 3 separate demo sites with links to the others. It also makes backing up of sites you're working on a lot quicker as the old pages (sites) have been backed up and don't need further backing up. It's just a workflow preference.

  • Transferring iWeb 06 site to new computer

My mac.com site was made with iWeb 06 on my previous computer. On my new iMac, iWeb has no trace of this site so I cannot make changes. Is it possible to download the site directly to the new iMac or must I get the old computer and transfer the domain folder via a CD or ethernet?
Are there any surprises waiting for me when the site is updated by iWeb 08?

Do you have access to the old computer? If so go into the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on it and copy the Domain.sites file to the new computer. Put it in the same location, i.e. User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. If you have any domain.sites2 files in there and they are empty move them to the trash. When you open iWeb it will open that domain file and covert it over to the iWeb 2 format.
FWIW IWeb cannot import any previously published sites. It only generates them.

  • Iweb Shuts Down While Updating Domain File

    I have a 1.67 GHz PowerPC G4 Powerbook.
I recently upgraded to ILife 08.
When iWeb tries to update the Domain File, it crashes and shuts down . . .
Does anyone have any experience with this and if so, how does one go about fixing this problem?

    1. Quit iWeb
    2. Delete the following file:
    Home Folder/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iweb.plist
    3. Relaunch iWeb
If that doesn’t work delete the file again and restart your Mac.
    1. Go to Applications/Utilities
    2. Open Disk Utility
    3. Click Macintosh HD
    4. Click on Verify Disk Permissions
    5. Click Repair Disk Permissions.
