IWeb and Aperture Galleries

I am wanting to use Aperture to create all my Web Photo Galleries. I currently have a fairly extensive iWeb site. Is there a way to export the Aperture gallery to iWeb? It would make sense right? What is the best way to intergrate the Web Gallery feature in Aperture with a pre-existing iWeb site?

I just finished putting a 38 page site together in iWeb. Most of it was a set of photos from a trip to the Amazon, Machu Picchu, and the Galapagos (http://web.mac.com/donoshea). All the the images on that site were imported into Aperture, adjusted and cropped there, and then exported to iWeb. The export method, however, was simply to drag the previews in the Aperture window, into the appropriate photo album window in iWeb.
I found while using this process, there are few precautions that should be taken. First, be sure that the preview size (bottom section of Preferences for Aperture) are large enough to display well on most monitors. I use "Fit within 1280 x 1280*). Second, update the previews and force a "Generate Previews" if any of the images were modified by an external editor, such as Photoshop.
So I built the site as I adjusted the image in Aperture. I tried the Aperture web galleries and found them too stolid for a personal and family web page.
One other advantage to using Aperture as a prep for iWeb is that after rating the images I thought I wanted on the web site, I grouped the logically or chronologically for display on the web pages, then stacked them for tidiness. If the stack was greater than 8 for a two-page spread, I either cut the number of images (just drop the rating below the selected one) or redistributed the images between stacks to tell the story.
I hope this may be of use to someone,

  • Photo file issues with iWeb and Aperture....also too much duplicating!!

A little background, before I get into my iWeb issue.....
Years ago I tried iPhoto, but I didn't like how it duplicated all my photo files and I wasn't very fond of the file structure it created. Years later (last month) I got Aperture. Aperture (still has a long way to go) also duplicates all your files and places them in their own file structure. If I can get along with Aperture (and if it will get along with my other programs), I won't mind putting all my files into the file structure it creates. But for now, I still have my original files in the original file structure I have had for many years as a back up.
On to my issue with iWeb and Aperture....
To add photos to iWeb, you can either go into the iWeb media center or you can drag and drop photos from other locations.
    1st: iWeb media center
To get my photos into the media center, I would have to load them into iPhoto (iP 6 does allow you to keep your original file structure, but it still creates .jpg files, which fills up your hard-drive. More duplicates I don't need or want). So that is out for me. iP6 will let you view and use your Raw files.
Another way is to drag and drop your file structure directly into the media center window. I don't think this duplicates any files (at least I haven't been able to find any), but it takes an awfully long time to thumbnail all your photos (several hours and still waiting for 22K + files). Also, it won't show any Raw files. Again, out for me.
Aperture won't let you drag and drop its library into the media center at all. So if I was to move all my files into the Aperture Library, I wouldn't be able to access them for iWeb at all.....Out for me.
    2nd: Drag and Drop
I was able to drag and drop Raw files directly into iWeb from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Adobe Lightroom.
As I said before, I am trying to move over to Aperture. However, Aperture won't let me drag and drop photos. What is the deal here??? These are both Apple programs and they won't play nice with each other. Very annoying.
Anyway, I put a link below to my iWeb test webpage I made. All the photos were Raw files that I did a drag and drop from C1 Pro, Adobe Bridge and Lightroom. There were no problems with the publishing.
    http://web.mac.com/phil_navarro/iWeb/Site%202/Drag%20and%20Drop%20test.html
So, does anyone know if they can get photos from Aperture to work?? Thanks for any responses.

    Jedi,
    Perhaps you are right.
I am not a web developer and I will never be. I don't feel like spending countless hours learning how to use Dreamweaver or some other Pro web app. iWeb looked like a way to start making websites of my photos for my friends and family (much easier and better than Home Page on .Mac). All I was asking was for a way to drag and drop my photos (especially Raw files) with Aperture. Which I can do with Lightroom, Adobe Bridge and C1 Pro, and without using iPhoto.
I am not a Pro photographer either, but I purchased Aperture based on what was advertised on the Apple website. From that ad, Aperture fit my photo needs almost to a tee. I am looking to adjust Raw files, Crop, Archive and keep my use of Hard Disk space down to a minimum. I can use Photoshop for the other 5% of things I do. However, Aperture has some issues (if you own it, then you already know. If you don't, you can read the Aperture Forum) This is one of the reasons I never went to iPhoto for archiving. I didn't like the way it duplicated all my files, taking up more disk space and its file structure. So even though Aperture won't play nice with other programs, I was surprised that it wouldn't play nice with any Apple programs.
After reading your post and based on what you are saying, everyone either needs to have/learn/use Pro apps only or have/learn/use iApps only. Don't Cross the Streams!!
I guess that means Apple will need to fix DVD Studio Pro. It uses photos that are in your iPhoto library and music from iTunes (iApps in a Pro app??....for shame...."it was never intended"). Also, DVD SP won't read the Aperture library. Does that mean there are 3 platforms? Pro, iApp and Mediocre??
    Now I have 2 questions:
    1. Can someone please tell me which apps are Pro and iApp, or if there is Mediocre? I don't want to mix them up and "Cross the Streams".
    2. Again....is there anyway to use Aperture with iWeb?
    TIA,
    Narvon

  • IWeb and Aperture: any updates since October?

I've shared the difficulties that others have discussed in getting Aperture, iWeb and iPhoto to play nice together.
I use Aperature now because I have so many photos, and I was having to rebuild my iPhoto cache every day (to the tune of 15-30 minutes), plus I want versioning and better organizational stuff, etc. I distinctly remember hearing in the promo material that Aperture was going to be seamless with iWeb, and it was the main reason I decided to take the leap.
I'm wondering if anyone has made any progress of getting these two apps to talk better to each other? And does Aperture automatically update iPhoto with versions? How do you import additional iPhoto images into Aperture without having to re-import the entire library? Any word from Apple?
    Thanks,

    Aloha G,
Thanks, and since you asked, here's my usual workflow:
I am a digital painter, which means I use digital photos to provide the pixels that I paint with, using primarily Corel Painter.
I shoot photos and import them into iPhoto for cropping and minor color fixes. I then export the photos to Painter. That means I copy them to the desktop folder that I use to collect all the bits and pieces that will be part of the painting. (That might be a Projects Folder in Aperture).
I then proceed to produce between 5-15 versions of my painting, doing incremental saves. These are full sized files.
When I finish a painting, I export it back to iPhoto as a full sized JPG.
Then I export from iPhoto AGAIN to get a smaller, low-rez file to my project folder on the desktop. I have not figured out how to make a low-rez duplicate in iPhoto without exporting and importing.
I then re-import the smaller file back into iPhoto, and put it in an album with other low-rez paintings, ready to go into iWeb and onto my web site.
I may have to also generate other full size versions to print my paintings in standard sizes -- 5x7, 8x10, etc.
Average file sizes are in the 5-50MB range, though they can get larger.
In my dream world, here's what I'd like:
I'd like to be able to import into a photo handling program. I'd like to edit the photos in Painter directly from iPhoto (which I can do, but iterative save means I save the iterations...where?) Painter complains that Aperture's files are not in a format it can use. I don't see anywhere in Aperture's Preferences to change the way the files are exported for an outside editor.
I'd like the photo program to allow me to do versioning (which Aperture does nicely; iPhoto does not), so I can print whatever sizes I need. I also want the photos to be push-button connected to iWeb because I have already invested a lot of time in creating an iWeb site.
I'd like not to have to create full-size duplicates because of storage issues.
And, now, I have a new problem since the previous post. I currently have Aperture referencing my iPhoto library.
I'm thinking that I will just wait for Aperture to resolve what seem like fairly easy fixes. Meanwhile, I thought I would hand-split my iPhoto library into smaller individual libraries to reduce the cache load. BUT, when I tried to export my iPhotos into smaller libraries, I cannot do it. I cannot drag a photo to the desktop now.
Is that because Aperture is now managing the photos?
    Thanks for all your help...

  • .Mac 'Personal Domain' and Aperture Galleries?

    hi all.
I have a personal domain www.gregory.hk and I've arranged with my DNS guys to set up a subdomain gallery.gregory.hk with the CNAME pointing to web.mac.com
I'm getting two impressions from searches I've done on Apple:
    1. personal domains only apply to .Web and not to Galleries.
    2. personal domains must be a 'www' subdomain; i.e., the subdomain must be www[.mySub].myDomain.hk
    So, the questions:
has anyone created galleries with Aperture and sent them to their personal domain?
has anyone been able to use a personal domain that doesn't include the www sub? after all, all that really matters is that requests to web.mac.com are via Port 80... right?
    cheers,
    Gregory

    great answer. thank you.
although the .Mac galleries have a slick interface (and Aperture only uploads new/edited photos), I have a few problems with the .Mac galleries:
the url shows your mac.com user name! I like to keep my @mac.com address secret so that's a big problem.
    no comments?
very limited space (and not customisable) for album descriptions.
no captions? (or am I blind and miss it?)
I want to have a slick gallery that can be configured/populated from Aperture, and preferably be styled/coded to match my MT4 blog (I'm working on a new version of my blog at this time...).
mac.com was a consideration because my .Mac subscription includes the storage/bandwidth and it's just sitting there not getting used.
SmugMug Photo is another consideration but I'm a little concerned about the work needed to (a) simplify the interface and (b) match it up with my blog design. (I don't like cluttered album designs. here's one of my own hand-designed albums for reference.)
for the record, I'm handy with xhtml and css.
suggestions, input and opinions would be welcomed.
    sincerely,
    Gregory

  • IWeb and Aperture photos not looking that good?

hey guys can any of you tell me why
when i done edit my photos in aperture and loads them over in iweb they are not looking that good as in Aperture why is that?
    can any help me here?

Opps.  I thought I was in the iPhoto forum.    Getting old(er).
Have you done this before and had better results?
Are you dragging them onto an iWeb page or into an iWeb album or photo page?
Do you have iWeb's preferences set to optimize photos upon import?

  • IWeb and Aperture - Photo Descriptions - Help please?

When you drop photographs into a 'photo' page in iWeb it automatically places a title underneath the photo which is in fact the file name. I don't have Aperture (yet) but would using Aperture enable me to attach a "description to the file? If so, is it possible to include this description in the photo albums so that it appears when each image is presented in the browser? At the moment I am laboriously cutting and pasting 600 image descriptions from Lightroom and into iWeb. Surely there's a quicker way?
    Thank you in advance.

Once you get your photos in to iWeb, you can highlight the thumbnail and the description under the photo which is the file name. Once the description is highlighted, type in what you want to say. If you click in between the thumbnails a control box will pop up and you can choose how many lines you want for your description. Once the the description is typed in, highlight what you just typed, then press the command key and "C" key. That will copy what you have highlighted. Press the Tab key and it will take you to the next thumbnail and the description will be highlighted. Next press the command key and then the "V" key. That will paste the new description on the photo. Once you do the copy (Command+C) you can go through a bunch of thumb nails fast by pressing the Tab key then the Command key and V key.
Hope this is the info you were looking for. You don't need Aperture to do this...it uses the file name too unless you change it in Aperture. You can change the photo description faster in iWeb.

  • Iweb and Aperture

Is there any way to access photos from inside iWeb that aren't in iPhoto. For instance, is it possible to access Aperture albums from inside iWeb?
    Thanks very much.
    All the best,
    Tom

I'm not sure if that is possible. I am thinking since apature came out before iLife 06 and iWeb that it doesnt have the option, unless there is some sort of update for apature.
Could you move your Albums from Apature into iPhoto and try that?
You probaly asked this question because you didn't want to do the above.
Another thing you could try is to physically drag the album from apature and try to drop it into iweb or a iweb photo page.
    I dont know for sure.

  • Iweb and web galleries?

i need to use a password protected program to host online albums for clients through my website. 1) i have no idea how to do this and 2) where to get it... my website is hosted through godaddy.com but is created through iweb.
    - i have been told simple viewer and web gallery wizzard (although i dont know if thats PC only) but im not sure how either works effectively - and/or how to plug them into my website
anyone have any suggestions or links to help?
    thanks in advance..

You can create a password protected site with a photo gallery and slideshow with iWeb. If you need more than one site, you can create additional sites, each password protected separately in iWeb.
If you decide to create multiple sites that way you might want to coinsider using iWebSites. One way to handle multiple sites is to use iWebSites. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files. If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • Will Aperture work with existing iWeb pages and MM galleries from iPhoto?

Now that Aperture is available as an $80 app, I am considering moving from iPhoto to Aperture. If I do, will Aperture work seamlessly with my existing iWeb pages and MM galleries, set up via iWeb and/or iPhoto? The other editing programs I use on occasion are Nikon Capture NX2, and Photoshop Elements. Also, if I want to at time remain in "simple iPhoto" mode while using Aperture, is this possible, or will my life be more complicated for every edit? Thank you!

Slightly disappointed in the dearth of good web page
creating options in Aperture (you'd think they'd be
better, no?). Can I get iWeb and create web pages
    using my Aperture photos?
Yes, iWeb can access your Aperture images if you've enabled previous. I tried this and found iWeb's web galleries quite horrid. After experimenting with a variety of options, I settled on customizing Aperture's web galleries and grafting together pages created by the two programs. iWeb works fine for throwing together some top level pages, and you can then hang Aperture web galleries off them as external links. Several folks have posted instructions on how to do this, and one fellow assembled a nice PDF.
    Cheers,
    Andreas

  • Still no Aperture Galleries in iWeb gallery insert menu.

Now that all my photos are created in Aperture it is really frustrating that they are not showing up on the iWeb "insert" menu. All of the iPhoto galleries show up and none of the Aperture galleries. Does anyone know when this may be fixed? They just updated iWeb today and still this problem exists. Apple PLEASE allow the insertion of galleries from Aperture - they're right there on the gallery page.

-josh

I've run into this myself recently, and you're right, it's very annoying. On the Aperture forum there are always posters claiming "there is absolutely no reason to keep iPhoto anymore if you use Aperture." However, there are a handful of these little quirks that negate that statement (no Front Row support, none of the matte print options iPhoto has, galleries unsupported in iWeb, etc.). I've sent Apple some feedback to let them know this is an oversight.

    josh:
By chance are those galleries created by Aperture password protected? If to that's probably the reason. iWeb won't display any gallery in the Widget menu if they are password protected.

  • IWeb 08 and Aperture 3.0.3

I have been building websites for my photo classes with iWeb 08 and accessing images from my Aperture library for some time. I am now using 10.6.3, and Aperture 3.0.3 and all I see in my media panel under photos is iphoto. Is this a bug, or do I have to upgrade iLife to make this happen? Is this also the case with Keynote, where I can no longer see the Aperture library.
    Thanks,
    Peter

Well, I solved my own problem. The last Aperture library I had opened was on an external hard drive that was not connected to my computer. Once I opened Aperture with the library on the internal drive, Aperture images appeared in both iWeb and Keynote.

    Peter

  • PLEASE CONTINUE iWeb (and site) and Gallery

I bought a mac so easy it was to share my photos and website with iweb and Gallery, and able to make DVDs very easily.
I bought a mobile.me account for it, but now I'm not very interested icloud offers too I can not publish my site and create beautiful photo galleries to share with my family and friends (I do not like Facebook).
Please continue with iweb and gallery as me.com!!! Everyone says me that it was very nice

  • IWeb and Mobile Me gallery?

I am using iWeb to create my web site but publishing my photos from iPhoto to the mobile me gallery. In iWeb I am using the Black theme where it puts the main links to the different pages across the top. I would like to add a link there that goes to the gallery.me.com page. how do I do this??
    Thanks for the help.

iWeb: you don't need to save anything from the iDisk - iWeb does not open html files. Your iWeb sites are held in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb in a file called Domain. So even after MobileMe terminates you will still be able to open iWeb and see your sites, you just won't be able to publish them to MobileMe. You can publish them to any other webspace - please see this page:
    http://rfwilmut.net/migrate2
Gallery: if your albums arre synced with iPhoto or Aperture then the pictures are on your Mac anyway. If not, and you don't have local copies (which is always a risky procedure) you will have to download each picture separately. Alternatively there is an online photo gallery service called ZangZing which provides an easy import facility from various other services including MobileMe's Gallery. It's free until June 2012 after which the first 2GB is free with escalating price levels starting at $5 per month or $50 a year.

  • No pics appear in iphoto and aperture sidebar since iLife 11

With the update of iLife11 the pics disappeared from the sidebar under iPhoto and Aperture.
While the sidebar for Audio, Movies and Widgets runs well, only the running upload icon appears beside of iPhoto and Aperture.
Why does iWeb not find the pics?!
How to help iWeb to get access to the photo libraries?
    Cheers,
    Thomas

Since it works OK in your wife's account it could be a preference file that is causing the problem in your account. Here's how to determine if that's the problem:
Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard/Snow Leopard
    1 - close all applications.
2 - open your Library folder, Home/Library, and drag the Preferences folder to the Desktop. A new Preference folder will be immediately created in the Library.
3 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
4 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button.
5 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the Preferencess folder on the Desktop into the Library to replace the new one that was created.
