IWeb and Google

Dear iWebbers,
I have published a new site made in iWeb on my personal domain. Now Google doesn't seem to find my site anymore. I would very much appreciate any tips or solutions.
Thanks, Jeroen

It looks like your website is called Site_2 in iWeb so the sitemap.xml should go inside the folder of that name and its URL will be...
http://web.mac.com/joegramm/Site_2/sitemap.xml
You would be better to name your site JoeGramm or Joe_Gramm or Joe.Gramm.
Once you have submitted your sitemap to Google and had it verified, the spiders then crawl your text - they can't look at photos! You need to put your keywords like Joe Gramm, Upholstery etc in the text on your pages.
As far as I know the masking stops Google but you'll find that out for sure if you try to them to verify using that URL.
I use the application Google Sitemap Automator to create sitemaps.
I just read your latest post while writing this.

so it shows all my website pages under my website in google.
or if not i do actually use dreamweaver and i was wondering if i could do it with that if not can anyone help of you wanna contact me with extra info or anything else it is [email protected]
    thanks Mitch

    That is not something you have real control over. It is something Google will do automatically for your site if they feel it is necessary. Here are some of the things you can do to help your chances of having those links come up;
    1) Link to your important pages from within your website using the same anchor text (ie the blue underlined text)
    2) Get links to your important pages from third party websites using the same anchor text (This is difficult since it is hard to control how other sites link to yours)
    3) Create an XML Sitemap file and create a Google Webmaster tools account. From here you can control what links Google displays for your website.
Keep in mind that this takes time. If your site is new, you will probably have to wait a few months before these additional links start appearing in Google's search results.

  • Iweb and google analytics

    hi,
i am new to iweb, i am trying to insert a google analytics script to my new site, how can that be done? can i edit my site in HTML mode?
    please advise, thanks, Meir

    Salut,
I just tried 1000 combinations to implement that code and only had errorr... The solution proposed by Wyodor (thanks for the post btw) seems to be simple and easy but I definitely don't understand what I'm doing wrong...
    - I changed the google analytics code thanks to "Fraise" (HTML editor) by deleting :<script type="text/javascript"> and </script>
    - I uploaded the text file in a specific folder on my server (in the root)
    - I finally added the HTML snippet on iweb with the code given by Wyodor...
    - I publish
= Result : no google analytics when I check my source code...
    Maybe my mistake comes from the code : newScript.src = 'http://url/of/the/file/named/analytics.js';
Could you tell me exactly what URL (of the file named) I have to put in the HTML snippet ?
I also read some articles where people say that iWebSEO is working well. Would you recommend to use it instead of that solution above ? Do you think that iWebSEO can be a good way implement meta tags in order to improve your visibility on search results ?
    Thanks for your help
    Merci !

  • IWeb and Google's Website Optimizer

I am interested in using Google's Website Optimizer to analyze which of my web pages get the most attention and are the most effective. I need to modify the HTML in my web pages and "add HTML tags" but I don't know how to do that or if that's possible in iWeb? Can anyone help me figure this out? Thanks!

You can use the freewareiWeb SEO Tool to add keywords, page titles and photo alt titles which help search engines.

  • IWeb '09 and Google Analytics

So, Apple finally released the feature I've been waiting years for - the ability to upload to FTP in iWeb '09. This is really awesome because iWeb can upload changes to a site only instead of having to export the site to my hard drive then upload the entire site via a separate FTP program.
The only problem is it has basically broken my Google Analytics support. I used to use a Automator script to automatically add Google Analytics code to each page before manually uploading, but now that iWeb does the uploading itself, I can't do this anymore. And the way iWeb implements HTML "widgets", it loads javascripts in a separate file instead of in the main HTML file of each page, which basically means Google analytics won't work.
Does anybody have a good way to get Google Analytics working in an iWeb page without exporting the page and uploading with a separate FTP program?

    J-a-x:
I started using iWeb '08 when it first came out and have been very happy with it. I purchase iLife '09 and have switched to iWeb '09 with very few problems. I use Statcounter (and Google Analytics on one site) and ran into the same problem that you have indicated. Initially, I used the Publish to FTP function and used html snippets for the Statcounter code which worked OK.
One of the problems with using iWeb is that the pages do not always look the same in Safari as they do in IE7. What I do not is publish to a folder then through VMWare Fusion, look at the pages in Internet Explorer. The main difference that I am finding is the text boxes. This procedure allows me to make sure that the pages veiw correctly in IE7 before I publish them.
Once, I am happy with the pages in the website, (at the recommendation of Roddy) the pages are optimized through Website Maestro (WSM). This creates another folder in your Sites folder with each site optimized. I then use iTweak to add the Statcounter codes to the optimized pages and then upload to the server with Fetch. WSM has the upload function, but last night I could not figure out the paths correctly so I used Fetch.
FYI, I am also using Multisite with iWeb '09 and it seems to work fine. I maintain three websites, two of which have similar information. I can be working on a site, use Multisite to quickly switch to one of the other websites, copy information, then switch back to the previous site and paste the information. Seems to work well.
I think an important thing to remember is that most of the people that view your website are going to be using Windows Internet Explorer so it is very important that you make sure that the view they see is correct; in that case WSM is a must have.
Is iWeb '09 worth the upgrade? Yes, I think so even though I have chosen no to use the Publish to FTP function, the Publish to Folder option is much enhanced. There may be some additional enhancements that make it easier to use that I do not use and am unaware.
    Hope this helps!

  • Iweb 08 AND google search???

Hey, I hope someone can help me. 1st off, I don't know much about page design and all that stuff. I know a little, but please simple terms.
I'm thinking of making a page in Iweb, however, I want my page to be indexed and search easy if someone should try to find my site on google. I have heard 2 stories.
    1) if you make your website in iweb, don't expect to get much trafic as google probably wont find it or pick it up. SO for small business, iweb is NOT the way to go
    2) Google will find your site if you add google maps and google products to your site.
I just want the world to know my site!!! But if google can't pick it up..or is unlikely to pick it up...then what's the point? Can someone please help??

With iWeb '08 you have the option to publish to a local folder to add tags and upload to MobileMe by drag and drop to Finder/Go/iDisk/My iDisk/Web/Sites.
By doing this, you do lose some of the functions of iWeb as you will see in the Help files.
There's a lot of good reasons why you shouldn't rely on MobileMe for a business site but, if you have to use it, you can still get search engine attention.
You need to follow the steps in the section of iWeb for Musicians that I mentioned above and use your MobileMe URL to allow Google etc to get to your sitemap.
Its also more or less essential to build your own navigation menu rather than use the default iWeb one.....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/WebMusic/Navigation.html
.... and follow the guidelines to get your site to load on a PC running Internet Explorer .....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/WebMusic/iWebandInternetExplorer.html
... if you want most of the rest of the world to be able to see your website.

  • Problem with redirection and google analytics

    Hello,
I created my professional website with iweb and bought a domain name for it can be simplest to remember, so this professional domain name (www.julienchabot.com) redirect to the iweb url (web.mac.com/julienchabot/iweb/com/home.html). Now I subscribed to Google Analytics to know the statistics of my website, but it seems that when people visit www.julienchabot.com, google analytics doesn't register any visit on my website, it only registers something when the iweb url (web.mac.com/julienchabot...) is visited, so only when I visit my website as a webmaster because I'm the only one to know this url.
So it's very frustrating for I can't know the statistics even if Google analytics seems to provide fantastics results !!!
However, when we're on julienchabot.com and that we read the source code, the correct code and iweb url appear on the top of the window... Does the problem come from the redirection company I subscribed to ?
Has someone a solution to this problem ?
Thank you very much for your help !!
    Julien

    Dear Gretsch,
Thank you for this website, I just registered but unfortunately the problem is still the same ! I think it's due to the redirect company I subscribed to, they use "frames" for the redirection.
Do you use frames as well for your website ? StatCounter asks if it's the case before providing the code and I replied "yes", they specify to put the code in the main page where there's not the "frame" code, but I don't know where this "frame" code is written, so I put the StatCounter code on the homepage one, but it's the same than with Google.
Would you mind provide me the url of your website for I can compare your code to mine ?
Thank you very much for your help !

  • IWeb, MobileMe, google webmaster difficulties.

I've been working on a website that is designed to represent a small business I am starting.
I purchased a domain name and I use my MobileMe account to host it, I subscribed to MobileMe solely for this reason.
I have made a small site, 12 pages or so, in iWeb and uploaded it to my personal domain name.
I then subscribed to google webmasters product and subsequently it seems like I have a penalty on my domain which means that google don't index it and it is excluded from searches.
I have been told that this is something to do with the way iWeb creates sites.
My sites homepage appears like this www.mydomiain.com/Site/Home.html
I would like it to simply start at www.mydomain.com
Firstly, how do I do that?
Secondly, how should I go about making my site google friendly? I use iWeb SEO app but until I can figure out how to reverse the violation penalty that iWeb has caused iWeb SEO software is not particularly useful.
I would like to delete all unnecessary iDisk folders, all I want to use it for is hosting my domain name. Which ones can I delete?
    Many thanks.

MobileMe cannot host your domain name, only your website. There is no reason to delete folders from your iDisk as it won't host your domain name.
Apple is not a domain name registrar and you can only host your website with them, not your domain name.
You purchase your domain name from a domain name registrar and they are your domain name hosts - all you do with MobileMe is link your domain name to your iWeb created site hosted on MobileMe.
You must then proceed to link your domain name to your website, so you must enter your domain name into the personal domain name settings of your MobileMe account and then you must go to your domain name registrar and log in here and set up CNAME forwarding to link your domain name to web.me.com.
You are still always publishing your site to MobileMe and never directly to your domain name, but you are simply linking the two together.
As for the site name in your url, this is normal site structure for iWeb and if you are using CNAME forwarding and publishing to MobileMe there is not really a lot that you can do about this.
As for iWebSEO, this works well and I use this for my own website, but for it to work, you do need to use it post publishing, so you would need to publish your site to a local folder and open the html files using iWebSEO and then adding what you want to and you can then use iWebSEO to upload your site or you can simply drag and drop the files to your iDisk.
There should be no problem and your site should still be found.

  • IMap and Google recognition when using a third part domain with forwarding

    Hi,
I have iWeb and have brought a domain name from Godaddy. The Godaddy domain is set to forward to the .Mac account so I can easily edit the information with iWeb - however, I have registered the site with Google (a few weeks ago now), but it still doesn't show, even if I type in the domain exactly and search.
I am tempted to get iMap, but it says something on the introduction about it may not work well with forwarding although doesn't make it clear what it actually means...?
I have heard that possibly iWeb can publish to FTP, meaning I can do it straight to my domain name, but will I only get one page, or can it create new pages.
I'm stuck, any explanations or help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

OK. So I think it am on to it - kind of. I followed this article http://newmacuser.com/iweb-with-godaddy-domain/
Although I have still specified for Godaddy to forward my domain using the usual function which I have had enabled before - I haven't touched the masking section.
Is this right? I guessed I had to keep it forwarded, because just changing the @ symbol to web.mac.com wouldn't know what site to forward it to??
Also, will iMap now work to get me recognized in Google?
Still a little confused - can you tell

  • Iweb and godaddy hosting

So I just purchased iweb and plan to create a website for when i travel to South Africa. Problem is I declined to sign up for .mac because I really only need it for 4 months and don't want to pay $99.
Godaddy.com seems to have some better prices but is there anyone here who can walk me through what I'd need to do to post my iweb creations to such a service? I need an ftp program right? Which should I use and how do I use it? Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Will

here here... I second that. I have had godaddy a long time, even while I had .mac. I got iWeb last night, and whipped up a couple images from MY trip to South Africa over the last two weeks!! interesting coincidence. take a look at what I did.
    www.jrog.com
I used the blog system to link in multiple photo albums, as I don't see myself creating much in the way of blogs in the conventional sense, but it is handy to be able to create a new image gallery.
Godaddy gave me free hosting, but I ended up paying for the basic service, some $36 a year for 5GB of storage and 250G of monthly data transfer. Pretty insane if you ask me.
I told the salesman at the apple store last night that I would go back to .Mac the moment they allow for personal domain name compatability. Even Google's gmail allows you to setup an alternate domain name, and send emails as that domain user.

  • Suggest alternatives to IWeb and GoDaddy?

Hello - As we are all aware there are limits to IWeb and GoDaddy. I'm a Macer in a PC world (this is changing but slowly). My PC pals have a difficult time viewing my website/blog and I want to upgrade my site so my pictures can load and fonts translate to PC. I do not sell anything it's just a site for friends and family but I would like to upgrade the look, enhance the capability with PC and Google and am willing to spend a bit of cash. I've heard of Dreamscape? Does anyone have other suggestions? I do the complete ease of use of IWeb despite some of the drawbacks. Thank you. Tami
    www.curioustidbits.com is my blog.

    Hi Tamis,
You have asked several questions in your post. I will try to answer each one. I can see from your website that you like the free form style possible with iWeb. I have to caution you that achieving maximum compatibility with all browsers, especially Internet Explorer comes with a price.
There are a limited number of fonts that are considered web safe. A quick search in wiki will give you the list. Using any other fonts will risk problems with certain browsers. If you want to use a special font in a limited way, for example a title, convert it to an image first then place it into iWeb. The price you will pay if you over use this method is a much slower download time for your pages.
iWeb uses a number of features such as shadows and reflections that can cause problems with certain bowsers. I have found that it is best to prep your images to the display size needed and save them as jpegs. The results are quite predictable with this approach.
Choosing an alternative to iWeb will require a change in your approach to web design, a trade off you may not be willing to make. To get a feel for an alternative check out Rapid Weaver. I have used both and they each have their pros and cons. Rapid Weaver will force you into a template design. If you decide on Rapid Weaver there are two plugins that add some of the simplicity of iWeb, Stacks & Blocks. You probably will only need one of these.
Here is a website created with Rapid Weaver, www.quilts4u.com
    Good luck with your website

  • Forwarding domain names and Google Ad sense

OK, community: I have decided to finally create a site, using iWeb, and want to have th iWeb URL forwarded, if that is the correct word, to another URL that is easier to remember. I also wish to eventually use Google's ad program. I know these topics have been answered, but can any the experts here condense and post a concise primer for both these tasks?
    Happy New Year!

for domain forwarding (which is your www.domain.com which is easy to remember TO .mac) comes with you buying your domain. they offer a so called domain forwarding. you just enter the forwarded address (.mac) and finished.

  • IWeb and Blogger

I have been checking around on here to see if anyone has discussed using iWeb and a previously started Blogger page. Seems folks are touching on it but not quite discussing it fully. I even googled it and came up with nothing. Guess it's still too new?
Is it possible to post a blog made in iWeb to a Blogger page?
Is it possible to do it without having to host it on .Mac and then bounce the link?
Seems like there has to be a way but I am just not clever enough at this yet. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I asked the same question and got a couple of responses but there really hasn't been much discussion on this. I did try to drop in some of the html code into a blogger site when you go into the template area. I know nothing about HTML but what did occur was the general image of the iweb theme did appear on top of my old blogger site but not all of the photos came along for the ride. I'll go on a limb with this and hope I'm not way off but until someone who knows what they are talking about can verify this, I would take this with a teeny, tiny grain of salt:
You could probably integrate the theme of a iweb site into blogger but to get the blogger functionality into the site, that may take a bit of HTML programming skills - such as implementing comments, photos, and how new blog entries would be insterted. As I posted elsewhere, I'm a little less concerned than most about comments as should i make a site, it would be mostly a travel blog with photos, videos and perhaps some ramblings on places I've been but my biggest concern is .mac - it seems absurdly slow and I'm really not sure if I uplaod more than 3 or 4 travel videos that i'll have much storage space left - 1GB these days seems like a lot but it really isn't.
