Iweb Blog ftp or mobile me?

I have just designed a website in iweb that I ftp through godaddy. Took a while to make that decision, but at least I have complete design control! I am doing pretty well and now at the search rankings stage and realize that iweb isn't great at that. Read some of the articles here on search rankings and downloaded the SEO guide and going to take actions with that, and also bought the godaddy search optimisation pack and intend to place the metatags/descriptions etc on my pages.
BUT, I now want to design a second site which is just a blog, which obviously isn't showing up through godaddy, so need to mobileme it. But, with a blog, how do you add the metatags etc to the pages, and are their individual pages for each blog posting? Does mobile me make it easy to go into each file and make the blog searchable? Just not sure whether to just design blog pages myself in iweb rather than their formatted ones, and use godaddy instead?
So, in short - mobile me with formatted iweb blog? or design own blog and ftp with godaddy - which makes the pages more searchable?

Welcome to the discussions. You'll probably have better luck making your blog pages more searchable if you use a dedicated blogging platform — most of them allow tags to be specified.
MobileMe is slow and problems with iWeb's blog are a recurring theme on these forums. For a success story with a non-iWeb blog hosted on WordPress, see this old thread:
To blog or not to blog
And to link to an external blog from iWeb's navbar:
Create a blank internal page titled "Blog" (Actually you can name the page whatever you want.) Then in that Blog page add an HTML Snippet with the following code:
<script type="text/javascript">
parent.window.location = "http://www.yourblogname.com"; // change this to your own URL
</script>
...Once published, clicking on "Blog" in the navbar will immediately redirect to your external Blog page. (Thanks to Cyclosaurus for the code).
SEO is important to you, but iWeb is designed for personal sites and, as such, Apple apparently thinks there's no need for Google. Web-design apps for business sites tend to integrate SEO — Sandvox Pro is an example:

j'aimerai transferer mon site iweb anciennement publier par mobile me, en FTP pour l'héberger avec 1and1… je n'y connais rien… help

    According to Google :
"I'd like to transfer my iweb site formerly published by me moving in the FTP host with 1and1 ... I know nothing ... help"
Since you use iWeb 08 you have to publish to a folder on your desktop and upload that to your new server with an ftp application.
You can read all about it in this forum as it has been discussed several times a day, every day for the past year when it was announced that MMe would end.
1and1 has the instructions how to connect to your new server :

  • Best FTP for iWeb produced websites after Mobile Me?

best FTP for iWeb produced websites after Mobile Me?

If you're asking about an FTP client there are several very good FTP clients.  YummyFTP and Transmit are two commercial clients that provide two finder like windows of your local website folder and the online site folder.  That makes it very easy to drag and drop or do automatic syncs.
Cyberduck is a free FTP client and provides a Finder like window to the online folder.  You can open the local Finder window for the web site for dropping and dragging. It will also do an automatic sync.
As for hosting sites IMO the two best are HostExcellence.com and ixwebhosting.  They are owned by the same company and operate essentially the same.  The only difference is that HostExcellence has a free customer support phone line for customers outside the US. Both offer excellent ear to ear customer support.

  • Using Facebook Comments for iWeb Blog (non mobile me domain)

Upon moving from a mobileme hosted iWeb created blog to a personal domain, I obviously lost ability to use iWeb commenting. That in-of-itself was frustrating, so I've been scouting out new possibilities. Some have recommended IntenseDebate and others, but I'm curious if anyone has had luck using Facebook Comments? http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/comments
I've been able to use the Facebook Like HTML as a Widget not a problem, but haven't been able to get Comments to work.
    www.kellerowski.com
    Thanks in advance!

That is because it is a plugin and plugins won't work with iWeb as far as I am aware.
I would try http://www.intensedebate.com. It is very easy to set up and it works and you will be notified by e-mail every time somebody posts a comment. I use IntenseDebate on my own site and it works very well for me.
Your other alternative of course is to ditch the iWeb blog and create a blog link to a blog created in WordPress - you can use http://www.wordpress.org too if you uploading to another host, so you will then have www.domain.com/Blog.

  • IWeb blog - How much to upload?

I have an established blog on my iWeb created website, in my own domain. http://www.cuppa500.com/CCC/CCC.html
To add a new entry to the blog I complete the following procedure:
Compose update & save in iWeb
Publish to a folder (on my desktop)
Transfer the updated material to my web site using FTP (Fireftp in Firefox).
This works ok ...BUT... each time I have uploaded the entire blog even if only correcting a previously uploaded spelling mistake! With the increasing size of my blog, this is becoming quite a lengthy process.
    QUESTION
Is it possible to upload individual blog entries, & if so how?
Very soon, I will wanting to update my blog more regularly whilst travelling, Mobile broadband is expensive so a method to cut back on the amount of data I upload is pretty essential.
    Thanks

If you update/correct a previous entry you can upload the files for that page only. If you do this for a new entry you will break the file structure.
I don't use the iWeb blog because it is restrictive and soon becomes unwieldy as you have discovered.
Consider starting a new blog for your "travels".
You can publish several blogs as sub sites and upload them to your server as separate entities and link to and from your main site.
Using a better FTP application will help. I use Yummy which has a ton of options.

  • WHATS GONNA HAPPEN WITH IWEB NEXT YEAR WHEN MOBILE ME CHANGE TO ICLOUD?

WHATS GONNA HAPPEN WITH IWEB NEXT YEAR WHEN MOBILE ME CHANGE TO ICLOUD?

Don't use all caps.  It's tantamount to shouting and more difficult to read.
It is now confirmed that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

  • Where can I keep my old iweb site now that mobile me is gone

I had my iweb site posted on mobile me, now I was wondering where I can store it to share with others

You will need to get yourself a 3rd party web host.
I have been using IX Webhosting for several years with little to no problems "usually the problem was something I did" and they have been quick to solve any issue I have come across. The have plans that start at $3.95 a mo (USD) and their customer service is top notch.

  • Iweb Blog & FB

I created a blog with iweb and publish on mobile me with no DSN name registration. FaceBook won't link the url http:/web.me.com/somebodies_name as a valid url. Do I have to do a domain registration for this to work?
I create my blogs in pages many of them have links, which work fine on the mobileme website. I've tried to paste them into FaceBook. I've even tries hard coding with A herf: still didn't work. I'm wondering if this is all due to no DNS?
    thx in advance

Will FB accept the full URL: http://web.me.com/MobileMeAccount_Name/Site_Name/PageName?

  • IWeb Blog?

Is the iWeb blog page a real blog that people can respond to?
    Is it censored?
By this I mean anymore if one mentions moral compass issues that seems to be as unpopular as worshipping Hitler.

    Something here on blogging.
    http://iwebfaq.org/site/iWeb_Blogging.html
My take is there are better tools for that purpose.
Re content: iWeb develops the content. Any limitations (censorship) would seem to be a function of your hosting vendor. Some may accept certain things, some may not. Not sure about Mobile.me; I have an account and use it for development -- but none of my stuff pushes any envelopes (unless boring is included!).

  • Scripting iWeb blogging

    Hi!
I am using iWeb '09 to update my website, hosted on MobileMe using a custom domain. I have been using Posterous for blogging, as I liked it's update via email feature quite a lot. Now I am planning to move from Posterous to an iWeb blog. The only thing stopping me is mobile posting. As my Mac is always on and connected to the Internet, I'd like to implement the same email posting feature Posterous has using AppleScript and Mail.app rules.
Up until now I have been able to write a script that takes the needed info out of the message and parses it a bit. The thing I do not know is how to make a new blog entry in iWeb with AppleScript. Here's what I scripted:
    on performmailaction(theData)
    tell application "Mail"
set theSelectedMessages to |SelectedMessages| of theData
set theTitle to (subject of theSelectedMessages)
set theEntry to (content of theSelectedMessages)
    try
set theImage to every attachment of content of theSelectedMessages
    end try
set mailbox of theSelectedMessages to mailbox "Completed rules"
    end tell
    end performmailaction
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "blog"
    set theReadyTitle to theTitle
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to "#end"
set theReadyEntry to first word of theEntry
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {""}

I believe if you are able to use the script to update vie email when you open the blog with iWeb those additions will not be in iWeb and if you publish from iWeb it may wipe out what was added earlier.
Why not just keep the Posterous blog since it does everything you want and embed it into one of your iWeb pages as in this example:Embed a Site Within an iWeb Page.
That's what some of the serious blogger recommend. This way if, for some reason, you drop your MMe account or want to move to a 3rd party hosting server you won't lose all of your blog entries. They are stored on the MMe server and will be lost if you drop the account or move.
    Just some food for thought.

  • Updating iweb blog

I've built a website with iWeb and moved it to a third party ISP.  How do I update the blog efficiently?  Don't see any help on the topic.

You are aware that by publishing an iWeb blog to a 3rd party FTP server you will lose the following features, right?
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a 3rd Party Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments

  • Is it possible to make an iWeb site accessible to mobile phones? (in Japan)

Is it possible to make an iWeb site accessible to mobile phones? (I'm in Japan)
I've tried making a tiny site but my own phone (au A5516T by Toshiba) can't display it.
The URL is accepted but displays just a white blank screen.
I can't see anything about it in this iWeb forum or iWeb Help. Which I guess means that either it's impossible or that it's so elementary I shouldn't have to ask!
Is there some special code involved?
    Any hints much appreciated. Thanks.

  • IWeb blog, photo albums requires us to enter the site name on every entry?

Every iWeb blog entry gets a heading of something like "My Site" or "Tom's Photography." This means we have to retype the name of our site +in addition to+ the actual title of every blog post.
Does this not seem annoyingly tedious to anyone else? Did the iWeb team really screw this up, or am I missing a setting somewhere? This also happens on photo album pages; the page for every new album dragged in from iPhoto or Aperture gets a generic title of "Tom's Photography" or something. Pretty annoying. Can anyone helps?

that's cool and everything, but someday when I have hundreds of posts and I want to change the title on the top, I will have to manually change each one. For some reason I think Apple would have thought of this. It seems like a no-brainer...?
Still need someone to help out on this.

  • Trouble uploading website using iWeb 09 FTP

    Hello All,
About 2 years ago I used iWeb to upload my website. At the time I had to use Website Maestro for the FTP. Recently I bought a new iMac and used iWeb 09 to change several things on my website.
I viewed all the videos on how to upload your site using the iWeb FTP and I even used the "test connection" button and it said it was great. So I went ahead and uploaded my site and iWeb 09 confirmed that everything was fine, but it didn't change my website. The old pages were still there.
I phoned my web hosting company (Host Papa) and they said iWeb 09 uploads the new pages to a folder in their cpanel and that I would have to log in to the cpanel and move folders around. I tried this but inside Host Papa's cpanel it was all greek to me. I phoned their help line and the guy switched all the files for me and the new pages published fine.
My question is why can't iWeb publish my site without me having to log into their cpanel to change folders around? I noticed on the iWeb 09 publish site I had filled in one bit of information incorrectly. Where it said "Directory/Path" I typed in www/ Their help desk said I should have typed in /public_html/ If I did this would this make a difference? Would it publish directly without me having to go into their cpanel?
    Thanks for your help.
    Mike

The old pages were still there.
Did you try clearing your browser's cache (CommandOptionE for Safari) and reloading the page? The site and index.html file probably should be uploaded to the public_html folder in your account.
I use WebSite Maestro and find it to be very good for uploading. You might try going back to that especially since iWeb's ftp client is posing problems. I would either try WSM or the free Cyberduck client.

  • Can photo albums be viewed on iWeb blog if you don't have 08?

Recently tried to create a blog with a couple of my photo albums on it. Unfortunately I am having some trouble doing it. I hope don't need the new iLife to do that task. I tried to click and drag he photo album from I photo onto the iWeb blog page...to no avail.

bitslap47, thanks for your input as well.
Unfortuneately, I'm a real newbie, and though I have Outlook 2002 I never used it for my contacts, so I have to input them somewhere, so I 'think' the easiest way for me is to input them directly into the Outlook Express and save me the 'possible' pain of transferring.
But THANK YOU for the information which I will save for future use.
    Thanks again:)!
