IWeb Newbie - blogging!!

Hi everyone,
just a quick question for my first post....Would you use iWeb as your blogging tool of choice or would you use something else? I have just started a trial with MobileMe and if the blog I plan to write has no problems I may stay with it, but am i wasting my time to begin with?

Welcome to the discussions, boyceee.
If you ever want to blog when you're not at your main computer, you will find iWeb very limiting. Also, if you need 100% of the internet to view your blog with no issues, you'll have to take into account that most of the internet is using Internet Explorer (of some version or another) and many of them will have problems with your pages. The more complex and visually pleasing, the more problem IE will have.
My answers to the above would be that I only blog from my main laptop and my blog is geared towards those either with a Mac or with access to a Mac (or the vision to be using FireFox or Safari on Windows) so I can get as complex as I want and never have to be concerned with anyone that can't view my site.
There are benefits to blogging with iWeb, but, in my opinion, you should first come up with a list of things that you want to do and that you may want to do over the next year. Look at some other blogs and determine if there's anything out there that you like. Then, once you have a rounded idea of where your future in blogging might lead, go through the checklist and determine if iWeb can do what you may need.

  • IWeb Newbie: Blog HTML Question

Hi, I'm relatively new to IWeb and have a question relating to blogs created in Iweb. When I create a new entry for my blog, and try to add a video for youtube (as a link) in place of the default picture, the video does not appear on my main page. I have used the html snippet and see the video on my blog entry page, however it does not appear on my main page. How do I go about including video's in a new blog entry page so I can view them directly from my main (intro) page? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I am using the Modern Frame template for my web site. When I add the blog template, a pre-set template shows up. Is there any way to edit or change it?
no and yes... no, you can't do much of anything while working inside iweb; yes, you can change it by changing the template xml file. Suzanne Boben at 11Mystics.com have done it for years.
For example, I would like to change the hyperlink color from red to blue. It won't let me do that. I go to the hyperlink inspector and I can't choose anything.
outside of changing template xml, this can be done in two ways (beside the above method):
    1) post edit the blog CSS file (search my post for blog CSS), this requires post edit and perhaps after every publishing.
    2) build your own widget to change the blog CSS and you only need to add the widget once. see my example here: http://www.cyclosaurus.com/Home/CyclosaurusBlog/CyclosaurusBlog.html
the example is done with my widget.
Also, when I view the web site on my computer, it looks fine, however when I view it on my iphone 3GS it shows an old font that I was using, why?

  • Is there any Blogger themes like iWeb's blog theme?

I Like iWeb's blog theme, but actually iweb is not easy to use.
Is there any way to export iweb blog theme for blogger(blogspot.com) using?
Or, is there already a theme for blogger which is like iweb blog style?
    thanks a lot.

Is there any way to export iweb blog theme for blogger(blogspot.com) using?
There is no export option of a iWeb theme.
When you publish iWeb pages, the objects (html, images and styles) that make the theme are in the published folder.
You have to edit a blogspot theme to display these objects.

  • IWeb '08 - blog "newbie" question

    Hello All,
I'm COMPLETELY new to the whole blog concept, so please bare with me...
I'm using iWeb '08, and want to start a blog. What I want to know is this: can my blog be updated remotely (say, via .Mac), or can it only be updated via iWeb?
    Thanks!

    Kerrstr
If you create it in iWeb '08, you will need iWeb '08 to update your blog - you cannot edit it (easily) any other way.
If you are adept at HTML you can try, but it may not be worth your time.

  • Weird access problems to published iWeb Travel Blog (iWeb 08)

I have created a weekly Travel Blog with text pages and Photo pages (now on Wk 6) on MobileMe. The Blog is accessible by password & user name. Since Week 5 some regulars have not been able to access the pictures from the "Our Pix" at the top of the page: they tell me they are repeatedly being asked for password even after they're already on the text pages of the site. I've tried republishing the whole blog again to MobileMe: no luck for the same people. I created a Gallery from iPhoto with a separate passwd & user name: works for some, but not for others.
There seems to be no common denominator in who can and who can't access my pages: from Mac users to PC-users; from newbies to experts on both platforms: there seems to be no rhyme nor reason.
    Any suggestions?

    These Apple docs may help:
_iWeb ’08: Published web pages repeatedly require a password when using Safari_
_MobileMe: Repeatedly prompted for user name and password of locked Gallery albums_
After re-publishing from iWeb, you and your viewers could try clearing the browser's cache and then visiting your site again. In Safari, click on the Safari menu and choose +Empty Cache...+

  • Move iWeb MobileMe Blog to Wordpress

I had to migrate my private Blog about my 2 years old little daughter from Apples mobileme servers to a wordpress account.
I wanted to keep all the comments too (Marlas birth..). So i wrote a perl script to do the job. It is far from beeing perfect, but it works for me. So it may work for you too. You have to adjust some things, that‘s for sure.
    Features:
    -Keep Comments
    -Keep Images (hmm mostly)
-Sets email-adresses for comments by Name
-Sets Tags by text strings occured in title or body
-Free, but my daughter will get every euro you donate! THX!
Note: The script works only while the apple servers are up. After 30. June all your comments are gone!

    Cyclosauruswrote:
@MirkoW, would you like to wrap your pl script in an applescript app?
i can help you with that, so people like moopie can just double click and run your app without launching terminal.app.
sorry, i'm just can code some little perl. Applescript is completly new to me. I don't think it's worth the time since the mobileme servers are shut down in june.
    moopie wrote:
Cyclosaurus, what an excellent idea! MirkoW, I gave it a try and got it to generate a file, but wasn't successful yet. I originally published my blog to a folder on my computer. The way my blog is set up, I have three separate sections, each with its own archive and RSS feed. Don't ask me why - it was the only way I could think to separate several different years of posts on my blog.
Hmm, we have to see if we can get the images right. The main problem is that iweb uses the same shapeimageXYZ.png shema for every post and wordpress need to have unique filenames. So my script is guessing the filenames wordpress makes out of them by importing. sorry my english is not as good it should for explaining in detail. Example
iWeb hat 2 posts both with
    shapeimage_1.png
So the first post get's the filename shapeimage_1.png but the second post get's the filename shapeimage_11.png.
But what if you have later an image which has already the name shapeimage_11.png?
    You got the problem?
For me it works with some tricks. so don't be afraid, i can look into it if you want.
    moopie wrote:
Does the perl script need to be in the same folder as the posts I want to export?
No, the script does not use any local file, it get's all information directly from the mobileme servers.
Thanks for your patience - I do appreciate your help on this and I see the potential for your script. It's the closest thing to a solution I've seen so far. Worst case scenario, I'll get an engineer at work to help me figure out what to do!
can you give me the link to your blog? so i can look into the html code. I think that would be the fastest way to help you.

  • Lost iWeb '09 Blog Entries

I kept a number of blogs pertaining to my pregnancy and several other topics. A few months ago, I moved the blogs from my main site and created a new site I called Archive. My plan was to publish these to a folder for backup purposes, but the publish always fails.
My larger problem is that now, the blog entries seem to be...not gone, exactly, but I can't see them. On two, the main blog page shows up, and when I click on Entries, I can see the list of my entries and their titles, but I can't scroll through them (list snaps back if I release the mouse button). I can't click on them either. One blog works just fine. One shows the main splash page, but shows only the background of the Entries page.
iWeb won't let me move these out of my Archive site. I have been unable to publish them to MobileMe or to a folder. I've tried deleting plists, etc. but nothing works. Restoring from backup messes up my current sites.
Help, please. I'd like to not lose these. Are these files alive somewhere?

The entries are kept on the MobileMe server I believe and are linked to your main site. If you can move those blog sites back into your main site you might be able to get the entires back. No guarantee however.

  • IWeb 08 blogging with slide shows

    Help!
I am using iWeb 08 in a fairly generic way. After seeing what her sisters have all been able to accomplish with blog sites such as blogger.com she wants to be able to include a slide show in her blogs. 2 questions:
    1. I have figured out how to export photos from iPhoto to quicktime. It creates a simple but usable slideshow in .mov format. I then open iWeb, click on the "entries" screen, create a new blow, then drag/insert the quicktime movie into the "placeholder" image to replace it in the blog. The problem is that when i go to my website, which opens up to the home page that shows all of the recent blogs with the most recent one first, the embedded quicktime file doesnt play. It only shows the first frame. When i click on it, it takes me a page with just that one blog on it, and then the mov file works, and i get my slideshow. What do i need to do make the .mov slideshow work in the home page. My wife wants the slideshow(quicktime movie) to work on the main page...).
    2. Second question. The quicktime slideshow is pretty generic. Sites like Picturetrail let you create pretty cool slideshows (flash files i believe) and then embed the html in your own blogsite ie blogger.com etc. I played around with embedding the html in iWeb and couldn't get it to work? A) can i embed a flash html in an iWeb blog, and B) will have the same problem of it not working on the homepage screen..
Sorry for the long post. Huge brownie points if i can get it to work, not to mention less grief for switching to a Mac
    Thanks for your help!

I have batch renamed all my assets, deleted all my slideshow thumb nails and replaced them so none of the images in my slide show have the same name as other assets anymore. I am sure this is what caused the problem.  I am about to reupload my website, so you won't be able to see the problem anymore (I sincerely hope).
The problem wasn't always reproducible. To be able to reproduce the bug you need 10 different slideshows (all with images called page_1.jpg, page_2.jpg etc with more than 50 pages in some of the galleries, and then you have to upload the slideshows, make changes to the website, upload again, then make more changes to the website, then go to all the galleries one at a time with the thumbnails visable then uncheck the show thumbnails box for all the different slideshows and upload again.

  • Visitors can't subscribe to my iWeb website blog. All ideas are welcome.

Hello, good people. OK. I've figured out the PDF issue. Thanks. Visitors to my iWeb website, nancysolomon.net, cannot subscribe to my blog. It's not that what I have to say is so important, but I would like to offer that option. Because they can't subscribe, I've removed the button for now. I have to get this puppy launched. My target is this Tuesday. I can add the subscribe button later -- if I can ever get it to work. When people try to subscribe, they are sent to my home page. I looked up the issue in Help, but I can't understand the page. I'm going to the Apple store AGAIN tomorrow -- I have one other tweak I need help with. As lovely as they are there, they were unable to help me with the RSS subscription issue last week. I publish to MobileMe, but it's forwarded to or by register.com. One of the Apple guys told me to have register.com remove the URL mask, but that didn't help. In fact, it created a different problem. The mask is back on. It may be that people can't subscribe to my blog. I can live with that. However, your observations and advice are appreciated.

Well, the commas and spaces are not meant to be taken literally, but are meant to represent what you might find on your host's website under the DNS settings (Domain Name System).  Every host is different so the way in which you set up the CNAME forwarding will also be different, but it is just meant to be an example.
When you log into MobileMe and enter your domain name under the Personal Domain Name settings, there is an explanation there about how to set up CNAME forwarding.
CNAME simply stands for Canonical Name Records and is an alias.  Alias records create an association between another domain or sub domain, so when you set up a CNAME record at your host, then you are creating an association between your domain name and the name of your iWeb site which has been published to MobileMe.  Hence, why you need to enter web.me.com to create the association between the two names - your domain name and web.me.com.
Every domain host is different so you need to go to yours and check out the DNS settings to see what you need to do to set it up.
In the long run, this should be better than masked web forwarding.

  • IWeb with Blog not publishing

After upgrading to the Mobileme, I attempted to publish a new blog entry.
iWeb failed to recognise the login id, and my mac would even logout from Mobileme.
As per suggestions from this forum, once I un-ticked 'Comments' from my blog, my website is able to publish as per normal. Hope this info helps you until they fix the mobileme + iweb

I can report my iWeb is back to normal and I can post the comments button and all.
Its been off for 6-7 days.

  • Iweb help - blog entries problem

    Hello,
I am trying to create a highly customized blog in iweb '08 and so far am doing very well, all the pages look perfect over all browsers however i have tried to edit the blog entries page but am having grave difficulty, i have set the page attributes to 1300 high and 1300 wide copied over the design but now i cant move the generated blog content title and time/date above half way up the page. This is highly annoying does anyone have any idea why this might be happening?
I removed all the content from my 'sidebar' and it let me move the content up the page as soon as i put the sidebar back it wont work
    Thanks
    Richard Howell

it would help if we could see the messed up pages. otherwise we can only guess what's happening. my guess is that you have somehow dropped the content into the header making the header really big and thus why you can't move the blog all the way up. a way to check is to show the layout. and see if there's a grey line above where the blog is sitting.

  • IWeb Podcast Blog: Main Page Only Allows 5 Episodes: Submitting to iTunes

    Hello-
I have a podcast published with iWeb '08's podcast blog. I noticed that the main page of the podcast only shows previews of 5 episodes that you can click on. I know that you can easily change this with the inspector, but I don't want to have to many on the main page which will cause long page loading times. The problem is, in the RSS feed, it only shows the five episodes on the main page. I submitted this RSS feed to the iTunes store and got it accepted, but, just as I suspected, iTunes only shows the episodes in the RSS feed. *Is there a way to get a RSS feed for the archive of my podcast? If so, how can I change the feed iTunes has?* Could I just insert a RSS feed button on the archive page? Would that work?
    Thanks for all the help-
If this helps, my podcast is located at www.greatcommercialspodcast.com
    Rafael Sands

If you go to the podcast page and use the inspector, clicking the RSS button at the top of the inspector window, then click blog you will see that it allows you to change the number of episodes shown on the main page. Could it be this?

  • IWeb 08 blog posting issue using Cyberduck

Tried to upload a blog page to my website and get the words "blog summary widget" where the content should be. I see it's been noted as a problem in other MAC communities but I haven't yet read a satisfactory resolution.

Is the blog page online now? I don't see it if it is. I don't have a lot of experience with iWeb blog pages (or any blogging pages for that matter) but do know these are the iWeb features that will be lost using the iWeb blog on a non Mac server:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a Non-Mac Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ *Blog and photo comments*
    ◼ *Blog search*
    ◼ Hit counter
    From iWeb 3's Help file
When opened locally, the file is fine
If the blog page displays OK when you publish to a folder and look at it locally then the issue is with the uploading. What are you using for an FTP client? If it's not the free Cyberduck you might try downloading and using it. It's well recommended here in the forum.

  • IWeb 08:  Blog page and Archive

I set up a new Blog. The first COMMENT (entered on the Comment page) shows on the Blog page. (it I had set it to show 4 comments) All other comments are on Comment page, but do not show on Blog page. Also, I do not understand how to get any of the Comments (now 10 of them) onto the Archive page.
    Please help..

I am not sure what you mean "use report this post & ask that it gets moved,".How do I do this?
Sure bottom right of each post, every post has that link in the bottom right corner...
there is no "New Posting" mention when I go to the iWeb page
Right, I wish Apple would make it easier, but try this...
    From here...
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=188
Select one of the two catagories/forums, I chose iWeb 08...

Where you'll see New Topic on left, down just a bit, and will get you this...

  • IWeb '08 blog links

    Hi,
I've made a iWeb blog and I am noticing my links acting funny and I have found no way to control them. If you go here: http://www.jenniferfragale.com/jf/photo_blog/Archive.html you can see that the names of the entries are light gray. When you simply scroll over them, they become dark gray. I want to be able to keep the link- including those directly to the comments- light grey until clicked upon. How can I set this up? This same problem occurs in the main blog page. Even 'READ MORE' changes color when scrolled over.
Any answers or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Same issue for me with iLife 09.
After 3 blog entries, the 4th one will not show up in Safari 3.2.1, but is there in Firefox 3.0.7! Very weird. I tried re doing the page but same result.
Please help! I've run out of ideas. My ulr is www.lifeclarityforums.com.au
