Iweb newbie

I have gone through the tutorials on .mac and have created a weg site for my business. My questions is if I publish it to. mac, do you have to type in tags for search engine. So if someone does a search on yahoo or google will my web site get displayed? If not how does other people find a web site published on .mac. Or will I have to publish my site on .mac as well as a third party?

Here are some more details on how to get your site listed more/better/faster:
1. Go to http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl and submit your URL. Submit both yourdomain.com and http://web.mac.com/yourusername
FYI, if you use forwarding on yourdomain.com, Google will be happier/more likely to index your mac.com addresses. No way around this.
2. Submit your site (either URL) to http://www.iwebusersites.com
3. Get other people you know to post links to your site, and you should include your url when you post in bulletin boards/forums, etc. The more places your links are, the more likely Google is to find you.
4. Add Meta tags to your pages.
Get MassReplaceIt
http://www.hexmonkeysoftware.com
Here's a page on how to use it:
http://web.mac.com/will.englefield/iWeb/WillG4PB/MRI.html
Tell it to search for
</head>
Replace with
<meta name="description" content="insert description of your site"><meta name="keywords" content="keywords for your site separated by commas"></head>
5. This is a big one: Check the text on your page - perhaps it is being converted to images. Make sure you use a web safe font, put text in text boxes, not shape boxes, and don't add effects (shadows, etc) to the text or text boxes. This way Google has something to search on your pages.
6. Create a sitemap and submit it to Google
https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/docs/en/about.html
in conjunction with this
http://www.sitemapdoc.com/Default.aspx
There are instructions for doing this all over the forum if you do a search.
7. Wait patiently. It takes time

  • IWeb Newbie here...I'm Confused

I am using iWeb to publish a web page using a .Mac account. I was under the impression that if I wanted something to be visible on my web page, then I would need to have that file in my iDisk.
However, I have used cut and paste in iWeb and the pictures look fine on the website and the source files are NOT in my iDisk. Does iWeb create a "separate" file structre?
Someone said to go to the folder "sites" in the iDisk. I did and it's empty, yet my web page look fine. I understand using iDisk if I wanted to share files with other or if I am using different computers. I just thought every file on my homepage had to be in iDisk for users to see my page.
    Can anyone clarify? Thanks.

    That's where I am confused. Let's say I have a link
to an MP3 file in iWeb. The file is in iTunes but
not in my iDisk. Is there a difference?
You don't need to worry about things you include from your hard drive from itunes or iphoto or elsewhere via the media browser or drag drop or Insert > Hyperlink > File. They are included in your site and copies are uploaded automatically.

  • IWeb Newbie: Blog HTML Question

Hi, I'm relatively new to IWeb and have a question relating to blogs created in Iweb. When I create a new entry for my blog, and try to add a video for youtube (as a link) in place of the default picture, the video does not appear on my main page. I have used the html snippet and see the video on my blog entry page, however it does not appear on my main page. How do I go about including video's in a new blog entry page so I can view them directly from my main (intro) page? Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

I am using the Modern Frame template for my web site. When I add the blog template, a pre-set template shows up. Is there any way to edit or change it?
no and yes... no, you can't do much of anything while working inside iweb; yes, you can change it by changing the template xml file. Suzanne Boben at 11Mystics.com have done it for years.
For example, I would like to change the hyperlink color from red to blue. It won't let me do that. I go to the hyperlink inspector and I can't choose anything.
outside of changing template xml, this can be done in two ways (beside the above method):
    1) post edit the blog CSS file (search my post for blog CSS), this requires post edit and perhaps after every publishing.
    2) build your own widget to change the blog CSS and you only need to add the widget once. see my example here: http://www.cyclosaurus.com/Home/CyclosaurusBlog/CyclosaurusBlog.html
the example is done with my widget.
Also, when I view the web site on my computer, it looks fine, however when I view it on my iphone 3GS it shows an old font that I was using, why?

  • IWeb Newbie Question: Removing "Drag Image Here" Placeholder

    Hi,
I'm new to iWeb and creating my website for the first time. I've added an audio file to one of my pages, but I'm not sure how to remove the "Drag Image Here" placeholder from that file in the work area. I realize the placeholder doesn't show up on the actual website if I don't put any image in there, but the placeholder still clutters up the workspace where I'm designing the page.
Is there any way to remove that placeholder?
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
    Regards,
    Keith

just try this simple method. it will not get rid of the placeholder - but it will hide it a make your iWeb building easier:
    1. from the "forms" button choose a square
    2. make it the background color or the color where the audio is placed, using the inspector!
    3. Using the right-click or Ctrl-Left Mouse Click send the audio file to the very back.
    4. make sure that the navigation bar is still at the very front and nothing covers it - because otherwise you cannot use it!

  • IWeb Newbie - blogging!!

    Hi everyone,
just a quick question for my first post....Would you use iWeb as your blogging tool of choice or would you use something else? I have just started a trial with MobileMe and if the blog I plan to write has no problems I may stay with it, but am i wasting my time to begin with?

    Welcome to the discussions, boyceee.
If you ever want to blog when you're not at your main computer, you will find iWeb very limiting. Also, if you need 100% of the internet to view your blog with no issues, you'll have to take into account that most of the internet is using Internet Explorer (of some version or another) and many of them will have problems with your pages. The more complex and visually pleasing, the more problem IE will have.
My answers to the above would be that I only blog from my main laptop and my blog is geared towards those either with a Mac or with access to a Mac (or the vision to be using FireFox or Safari on Windows) so I can get as complex as I want and never have to be concerned with anyone that can't view my site.
There are benefits to blogging with iWeb, but, in my opinion, you should first come up with a list of things that you want to do and that you may want to do over the next year. Look at some other blogs and determine if there's anything out there that you like. Then, once you have a rounded idea of where your future in blogging might lead, go through the checklist and determine if iWeb can do what you may need.

  • Possible to resize movie inserted from MobileMe gallery?

I have a movie I've published to my MobileMe gallery using iMovie. It's "medium" size and plays about something like 5 x 7 inches. But when I insert it into my iWeb page, it is reduced to about 3 x 3.5 inches or so. Why? And is there any way to resize it?
What I really want to do is give the page visitor a small skimmable thumbnail to click on and then have it expand to full size, like in the MobileMe gallery.
Thanks, and be gentle - iWeb newbie here.

I don't know about upsizing the movie but you could put it in the iWeb page in a different way and have it open in its own window, sized just for the movie, to play. See the movie example in this demo page.

  • Non Standard Content

Hoping someone can help an iWeb newbie? My eight year old (who has a .Mac account as part of my family pack) is really enjoying messing with iWeb and has happily built a site with photos, movies and a small blog (when I was eight I was still playing with lead soldiers!).
She has found a freely distributed flash based game that she has downloaded and wishes to put on her iWeb site. How do I do this? I am assuming that I have to upload the flash game folder to her iDisk somewhere, and then build a hyperlink on one of her iWeb pages to the html file within that folder? Is that how I'd do it? (BTW, clicking on the html folder on her local drive does indeed launch the game so I know all the files are intact and work).
Can anyone help me with this? I suddenly lose all my street cred as a mac wise dad if I can't pull this off and eight is far too soon for that to happen!
    Thanks
    David

yes you are right, if you want to have a link to the flash file she downloaded you would have to place it in the underlined folder:
    iDisk/Web/Sites
the link address would go to an external page, which would http://web.mac.com/USERNAME/FLASHGAMENAME.suffix
you can also incorporate the file directly into the page. for that see here and click hereto see an example of a game at the bottom of the page added in the same way!

  • IE Issues ~ Sorry this is done to death...

    Hello,
The name's Jason. As my subject line says, I'm sorry that this has been done to death, but I'm another iWeb newbie who was gung-ho about posting an immaculate site, only to realize that its perfection in Safari and Firefox was only trumped by its shoddiness in Internet Explorer.
Here is the link to my site: http://web.me.com/ikonic.images/ikonic.images/Welcome.html
It's been said that some of you saviors out there might be able to tell what's wrong just by visiting the site. It's also been said that you might be able to offer me some ideas and advice on how to fix it and at least get it to look respectable on IE. Please visit my site if you don't mind lending assistance in this manner.
The main issue my site seems to be having in IE is with Text Overlapping. Primarily on the "Welcome" page, and the "Services" page. In iWeb, the font selected (Gills Sans) shows up smaller, but in IE it's larger and ends up overlapping the text beneath it. Obviously, IE viewers can't read much of the overlapped text.
I hope someone can shed some light. Meanwhile, I'm going to continue reading up on just how unimpressive IE is, and tinker with the site some more. Thanks!

Which I think means that almost 200 of the fonts listed in iWeb '09 will cause problems when viewed on a PC. No?
Are you familiar with the concept of Web (or Browser) Safe Fonts? In Fontbook there is a collection for that called Web. Here is some more info:
    http://www.ampsoft.net/webdesign-l/WindowsMacFonts.html
If you use a font which the viewing machine does not have installed, something else will be substituted. Whether that will cause a problem can only be determined by testing. In iWeb you can also turn your text into a graphic by adding an invisible degree of shadow to it, and that will ensure the viewer sees the same font that you are using.

  • Newbie..I would like to create a page in IWeb

That I could use to attach to an online ad a free standing mini page with a picture and additional info for advertising purposes. Is this the best application to create this? Anything I have created with the iweb templates 1) I cant seem to locate a SAVE AS (same thing in Iphoto after I may do some minor editing) and 2) It seems as though whatever I am creating within the templates are for publishing live only. I have a web site already..I just want to create kind of a mini one page with photos and text that I can use kind of like a giant jpeg..if I could figure out how to add movement and music(HTML code) that would be a bonus but one step at a time for me,,the newbie.
    Thank you!!!!

Wow thank you those are amazing..I will play around with them and I am assuming at the end whatever I have created can be saved as .jpeg or.img as I believe these are the only acceptable formats approved for some of the locations I would like to place them on.
Thanks again for taking time to reply

  • Newbie ~ Need iWeb / movie help ~ PC's having problems

Hello, please bear with me, I am a newbie. I am using iWeb to create a site for family and friends to keep up with my kids.
    www.jimcreighton.com
    or
    web.mac.com/creightonfamily
I have recently tried my hand at a small movie clip. When I go to the site I see it just fine. When I use my sons PC, using IE, I see it fine. However I am getting lots of emails from frustrated grandparents and others that they are either totally unable to see it at all. (A white "box") or they are able to see the screen but when they hit play, they get sound only.
Is this an issue on my end? Or on thier end?
Please remember that I am a total newbie at this, so be kind in your replies! Thanks in advance for any and all help.
    G5 iMac, G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Those that get a white "box" and sound are using older versions of QuickTime.
Ask them to download QuickTime Player version 7 from this link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
Once they've installed version 7 they'll be able to see your movie.

  • Newbie imporing pictures into iweb

    Hi
I'm trying to build a very basic website for my business as a placeholder until I have enough content to require a professional.
I know that you have to click the "media" button, and then "picture" to import pics, but many of my pics are neither in aperture or iphoto.
I can drag and drop some of the jpegs I have, but can I import an ".ai" file.
Also, is there a way I can add another folder to this list, so I can scan my hard drive for what I need.
    Cheers
Please feel free to rip on this newb, btw, I can handle it.

That file is a vector graphic file and is not supported by iWeb. Save the file in a different format from the original application. If there's no option then do a Print to PDF/Save PDF to iPhoto which will create a jpg file and import it into iPhoto. From there you you can add it to iWeb via the Media browser pane.
Yes you can add a folder to the Media browser list. Close the iPhoto icon so there's room below it and then drag the folder you want to just below it.

  • IWEB help for a newbie

I have a few questions, I recently switched to apple and I love it I am use to front page so I am learning.........I have made a site and I got it to upload to an appache server at 1st host web......I needed to make a few changes and i opened iweb and and made the changes but I can not get the changes to save to my folder under my documents the changes show when i preview in iweb but in my folder they do not I tried using save and publish to folder but that did not save them to mysites folder.....what am i doing wrong and what is the easiest way to make changes on an lready posted site.....I would appreciate any feedback.....Thanks Larry

    Ohhh.....
When you choose Publish to Folder, just select the target folder. You don't need to and shouldn't try to point iWeb to a specific sitefolder on subsequent publishes. Just point iWeb to the target folder, it will basically replace everything inside that folder every time it publishes. There is no "updating" of files inside the folder.
If I were you, I would start fresh. Delete the folder that you have already. Make a new one and publish into that one. You should see your changes show up. And when you upload this to your server, you should always be uploading the entire contents of this folder (that should be two things: an index.html file AND another folder with your site files...upload both right next to each other.).

  • Iweb won't post my snippet- newbie

Hello all- kind of new to HTML. I have searched the discussions and have tried what I think are the answers, but to no avail. I have made a "how to" video using a program called Camtasia- http://www.techsmith.com/camtasiamac/
I export the video and select the option to create an "HTML to embed on video content on a webpage".
Follow all the directions in Iweb and to no avail. I have tried Command and dragged the snippet into the footer as seen in other discussions. Here is the script, I hope it is not too lengthy. I did notice that at the beginning that I think I am suppose to add some content... am I right? Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

  • Bridge gallery and iWeb questions, newbie....

    Hi All....
I have made myselve a page in iWeb but I´m not happy with the gallery-layout with thumpnails and small sized pictures, I would like my galleries to be scroll down type, OR just one picture at the time and nothing else, except "Next/previous" and a "Menu" sign, either in a good (>>>big pictures) size....
I have this morning realized that I can do that in Bridge, so I have made myselve a testgallery and uploaded to my site via Bridge, and I can see in Filezilla that it is there, but I can´t see it on my page, off course because there´s no link between the two of them, the question is, how do I make my page show the gallery....???
I haven´t been able to locate the testgallery on the web, as mentioned I can see in Filezilla that it is there somewhere, but how to find it out there I don´t know....
My homepage is called www.easerfoto.dk and the gallery I have oploaded is called Bridgegallerytest, if it has any relevance....
If anyone have a page that is made in Bridge and care to share how´s, then please step forward, I´m on zero here, any tip is appreciated....;-)
Maybe I should mention that I am an complete NOOB on all this (managed to have Filezilla working first time last week), but want to learn....
    Bjarke

When you created your gallery did you publish the file to a folder?  And was one of the files in that folder named index.htm or html?  Make sure the gallery works correctly by opening the index.html file with your browser from the gallery copy on your hard drive.
Then upload to the root directory of your account on the server.  The url would be something like this:  http://www.easerfoto.dk/Folder_name/index.html.
Put that URL in the iFrame code below in an HTML snippet. The iFrame code in the snippet would look like this:
    <iframe height="XXXpx" allowTransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="width:XXXpx;border:none" src=" http://www.easerfoto.dk/Folder_name/index.html"></iframe>
Adjust the height and width dimensions to fit the size of the gallery you want on the page.
Also for what it's worth there are other gallery types of presentations, some from iPhoto with a free plugin, that might be of interest to you:
    SimpleViewer and Flash Album Exporter
Flash Album Exporter Postcard and AutoViewer Slideshow Themes
    Jalbum Examples
