  • Several Iweb and godaddy questions.

    Hello Folks:
Just to give you an idea of my proficiency with web design, I'm the equivalent of a student pilot who just soloed. Just enough knowledge to be dangerous and a threat to mankind. Here are my questions:
    1. How do I use text editor or word to modify my HTML? I can view the HTML of my site, copy and paste, but can't get it back into iweb as other than alphabet soup. I specifically want to change the email address. I wrote the site having my personal email address in my address book and can't change it to the business email address by just re-publishing with the change to my address book.
    2. I published to Godaddy and of course cant use the counter. I tried to follow the instructions after starting an account at Statcounter.com but don't know how to insert it then change it back to a web site. Same basic problem as the email.
2.1 Why would Mac consider something as basic as a counter to be proprietary?
    3. Can't get the slideshow to work on Godaddy. It works fine on my computer. On Godaddy, the slide show bar at the very bottom does not publish. I get an enlarged photo with a border on only three sides, nothing at the bottom. I can also enlarge each photo one at a time with the same results.
    4. Is the Iweb loaded on my Mac a watered down version? Seems like a lot of features may be lacking, especially if you want to do a business website like mine. I love my Macs and don't want to have to switch to some windows program, but need more than I see on Iweb.
My website is www.airlandandseaparts.com. I'm going to switch into windows hard drive now and see if the slideshow works.
    Thank you very much.
    Regards,

I wrote the site having my personal
email address in my address book and can't change it
to the business email address by just re-publishing
with the change to my address book.
You should be able to though... this is strange... Especially if you are publishing to a folder, then you should be able to re-upload the newly published files with the proper email address.
2.1 Why would Mac consider something as basic as a
    counter to be proprietary?
The resources for the counter are hosted by .Mac. They can't possibly account for every variable as far as available resources on other hosts. (php, etc - stuff I don't understand nor want/care to but thats what it is about probably)
    3. Can't get the slideshow to work on Godaddy. It
works fine on my computer. On Godaddy, the slide
show bar at the very bottom does not publish. I get

    Try re-uploading your slideshow_assets folder.
I can also enlarge each photo
one at a time with the same results.
This is how the non-.Mac slideshow works.

  • Suggest alternatives to IWeb and GoDaddy?

Hello - As we are all aware there are limits to IWeb and GoDaddy. I'm a Macer in a PC world (this is changing but slowly). My PC pals have a difficult time viewing my website/blog and I want to upgrade my site so my pictures can load and fonts translate to PC. I do not sell anything it's just a site for friends and family but I would like to upgrade the look, enhance the capability with PC and Google and am willing to spend a bit of cash. I've heard of Dreamscape? Does anyone have other suggestions? I do the complete ease of use of IWeb despite some of the drawbacks. Thank you. Tami
    www.curioustidbits.com is my blog.

    Hi Tamis,
You have asked several questions in your post. I will try to answer each one. I can see from your website that you like the free form style possible with iWeb. I have to caution you that achieving maximum compatibility with all browsers, especially Internet Explorer comes with a price.
There are a limited number of fonts that are considered web safe. A quick search in wiki will give you the list. Using any other fonts will risk problems with certain browsers. If you want to use a special font in a limited way, for example a title, convert it to an image first then place it into iWeb. The price you will pay if you over use this method is a much slower download time for your pages.
iWeb uses a number of features such as shadows and reflections that can cause problems with certain bowsers. I have found that it is best to prep your images to the display size needed and save them as jpegs. The results are quite predictable with this approach.
Choosing an alternative to iWeb will require a change in your approach to web design, a trade off you may not be willing to make. To get a feel for an alternative check out Rapid Weaver. I have used both and they each have their pros and cons. Rapid Weaver will force you into a template design. If you decide on Rapid Weaver there are two plugins that add some of the simplicity of iWeb, Stacks & Blocks. You probably will only need one of these.
Here is a website created with Rapid Weaver, www.quilts4u.com

  • IWeb and GoDaddy combo question:

I built a web site (with pictures and videos) on iWeb '09.  I'm using GoDaddy for ftp hosting.  All the Login info is correct according to GoDaddy ie; login name, password, server address, user name.  iWeb won't accept the password as valid.  I've changed it on GoDaddy a couple times to reset and try again on iWeb.  No luck.  Any answers?

    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iWeb's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder (Snow Leopard and Earlier).
3 - launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
Another option is to publish your site to a folder on your hard drive and use a 3rd party FTP client like Cyberduck, Transmit or YummyLite to upload the files to the server.  You might try one of those clients to see if it will take your user name and password.  With them you'll get a Finder like window of your account folder on the server.

  • Uploading iweb to godaddy

    Hey
Ok I wondered if someone could help me please, I'm trying to upload my iweb site to my host godaddy which is also where i got my domain name from I used fetch to upload files and they all apear to be in my file manager on godaddy but whenever i go to my URL www.laurabuckingham.com all i get is
    Not Found
The requested URL /Welcome.html was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
    Apache/1.3.33 Server at www.laurabuckingham.com Port 80
I emailed godaddy and eventually i got somewhere but still didn't work then i got this email yesterday from them saying.....
You would normally have your script and coding put together with the proper file names and paths prior to uploading the site through the file manager. Once you have uploaded the files to the file manager it would not be as easy to update the coding although it is possible. Please note we do not provide assistance with the coding of the site. At this time your files are uploaded but it appears the index.html file is set to redirect to Welcome.html which does not exist.
Does anyone know what i have to do to resolve this issue as I'm not technology minded enough to understand that and all it is doing is frustrating me as it looks like I've wasted money with godaddy
Can please someone help me please?
P.S I'm new to this and think i just posted this as a reply but it is actually a question!

StatCounter is a very good free counter. How to add it to an web page is discussed in Old Toad's Tutorials #12 and 13.
This demo page has an HTML Snippet counter (at the top) and this page has a post publication edit counter. The post publication edit method lets the user determine the font, style, size and color of the text based counter. The snippet based counter must be configured at the StatCounter site and has limited options.

  • Forum discrepancy: how to FTP iWeb to Godaddy once and for all!

I've been lurking on the forum and getting all sorts of good advice. Thank you everyone who posts here!
However, I've noticed a discrepancy about FTP'ing to Godaddy with authoritative advice-givers on both sides of the issue.
    Here's the issue:
When you publish to a folder in iWeb, iWeb generates two top level documents: an index.html file and a folder named Site (by default, or whatever you may have renamed it in iWeb as your "site."). The index.html file also appears to be contained inside the Site folder along with all the other docs pertaining to your website.
    The question is:
Which is better, to FTP both documents to the server, the index.html file and the Site folder, OR just the contents of the Site folder (and ignore the top level index.html file)?
There are multiple recommendations in this forum for both answers.
    Here's one saying FTP both:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7986754&#7986754
Here's one saying FTP the contents of the folder only:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8050644&#8050644
If I understand it correctly, a benefit of uploading both is proper RSS notification. Is this correct and how important is this? Are there any other benefits or is this the only one?
On the other hand, the benefit of uploading the content of the Site folder only is that the resulting URLs do not include the word "Site" (or whatever you've substituted for it), following your domain name, and before your page names.
In my opinion, the website looks more professional and clean without the word "site" following the domain name and before the page name, so I'd therefore rather upload the contents of the Site folder and not the Site folder + the index.html document.
So... if I continue doing it this way, is there any serious drawback, or would this be the way to get the most professional-looking results hosting an iWeb site on Godaddy?

    Ethmoid wrote:
My answer to this question is that I always advise people to upload the whole site folder, plus the separate index.html file. If you start loading individual pages from the folder, you risk messing the site structure up and your site not working at all. I tried this with my own site at one time and it would not display correctly until I uploaded the whole site folder and then it worked perfectly.
    Thanks for the response.
Is there any technical reason why loading the complete contents of the folder produced by iWeb '08 would imperil the site structure, or is this advice based on your one experience? My own experience is no problems at all uploading the complete contents of the main folder to Godaddy. So... has anyone else experienced problems?
I always say that it is not the url of a site that makes it professional or not, it is the content and the design. When I look at a site, I always look at the content and the design and then decide, I don't immediately look at the url. If you really don't like the word site, then change your site name to something more applicable to your site. I named mine the first 3 letters of the title and it looks a whole lot better than site and I am happy with it.
Remember that old adage never judge a book by its cover, well the same applies here, never judge a web site by its url!!
Arguably a website is the "book cover" for whatever company, organization, or person it is about. However, I don't want to derail the topic into a discussion of whether a URL matters. For those for whom it matters, it matters, and for those for whom it doesn't, it doesn't!
For me, it matters not because I care, but because I anticipate some of my visitors will care. So if I can serve up a professional-looking URL by uploading the contents of the folder rather than the folder itself, are there any compelling reasons, aside from not pandering to the superficiality of humanity, for doing it any other way?

  • Pages Questions/Frustrations

I'm pretty frustrated with Pages and have some questions.
Data: MacBook with 1.83ghz dual core Intel, OS 10.4.11, 1 gig RAM, lots of hard drive space available. I'm working in Pages on a novel that is around 200,000 words. Software Update reports no new updates available.
    1. Are saves always so slow? As I write I will hit Command-S for quick saves. In AppleWorks on the same manuscript such a Save would take less than a second, with Pages I've timed Saves that give me the spinning beach ball and take 10 seconds. That's rather a pain when I'm used to hitting Save between sentences.
    2. Spell check - why so slow? I've hit Spell Check and have timed spinning beach balls that take up to 64 seconds before the Spell Check dialog box comes up - in the mean time I can do nothing, Pages won't respond at all. Spell check is essentially useless.
    3. Spell check - I've tried highlighting just one word before selecting Spell Check so I can get the checker to learn that word, and once again I wait through a 60 second launch of the spell checker. Is there a way to just check the one word - QUICKLY - via the spell checker?
    4. The Comments feature, which I find very useful, has a default font size of 9 (very tiny). I can manually reset the size every time I make a Comment, but how can I reset the default font size in Comments?
    5. The disappearing cursor symbol: When I hit the return key to start a new paragraph the blinking cursor disappears. It is evidently there at the new line but is invisible. This is very frustrating and stupid - I hit return, pause for thought, look back at the screen and there is no cursor to be found. Is this truly the way Pages works? The cursor sits there blinking, visible as it should be, for everything but after hitting the Return key to start a new line. What gives?
    6. Fonts: Listed font names no longer appear in their own fonts, I end up highlighting text, picking a font, looking to see how the highlighted section looks, picking another random name, looking, etc. Is there no way - as there was in AppleWorks, to open the font menu and see all the fonts as they actually will appear?
Trying to keep up with the march of technology I've converted my novel from AppleWorks to Pages but these items I've listed are VERY annoying, especially the glacial spell check. I'm tempted to convert back but I'm hoping that I'm just being stupid and there are settings changes I just haven't found.
    Thanks in advance.

I will repeat what I wrote in an other post.
I assumes that your 200,000 words document is about a 1,000,000 characters one.
In AppleWorks, it will uses 1,800,000 bytes on disk.
In Pages, with the description of every styles parameters, it becomes something about 4,000,000 bytes long. This block of data will be saved as is in a XML file then this one will be gzipped in a 100,000 bytes file then the XML file will be erased.
I must add that these numbers are those met on a raw text document. Always the same font, size and style.
Only some words are in a different colour. With bells and whistles, you may quickly double the size of the XML file.
I assumes that this explain easily the differences encountered.
That's rather a pain when I'm used to hitting Save between sentences.
Most often on this forum we read from users which save only after four hours of typing.
My guess is that for users working as you do, the typing part of the job would be better done in a simpler tool.
For this kind of duty I uses Bean which is a free application more powerful than SimpleText, less powerful than Pages.
When the "kilometer typing" is done the document enters in Pages and this is a new story.
    2. Spell check - why so slow? I've hit Spell Check and have timed spinning beach balls that take up to 64 seconds before the Spell Check dialog box comes up - in the mean time I can do nothing, Pages won't respond at all. Spell check is essentially useless.
As I often wrote, it's the drawback of what I describe as a design flaw. The document is described in memory as a verbose XML document. The SpellChecker has a very heavy duty to scan the real text in the mountain of descriptors.
    3. Spell check - I've tried highlighting just one word before selecting Spell Check so I can get the checker to learn that word, and once again I wait through a 60 second launch of the spell checker. Is there a way to just check the one word - QUICKLY - via the spell checker?
It was responded by an other helper
    4. The Comments feature, which I find very useful, has a default font size of 9 (very tiny). I can manually reset the size every time I make a Comment, but how can I reset the default font size in Comments?
At this time, you can't. It's one of the numerous default parameters for which I wish that Apple offer a Preference setting. I wish to add that the choice of 9 is not really foolish. It was made to balance the space occupied by the comments' column(s) and the space remaining for the doc itself.
Many users wrote abot the reduced size of the real page.
What gives?
As other helpers wrote, I never met this oddity. Perhaps it would be fine if Apple was offering the ability to choose a cursor fitting our own requirements.
How many fonts are you using in a single document?
I guess that if you are a pro, the response is less han 5.
In the Font dialog, put these fonts in the favourite set so, the next time you will need to change the font, open the Favourite item and you will get your fonts in their own fonts. It's something like Christopher Colombus's egg.
Trying to keep up with the march of technology I've converted my novel from AppleWorks to Pages but these items I've listed are VERY annoying, especially the glacial spell check. I'm tempted to convert back but I'm hoping that I'm just being stupid and there are settings changes I just haven't found.
I'm always surprised when I met professional users changing their tools without checking seriously if the new , well publicized one really match the true needs
I worked more than 30 years as a potter. I was often offered new tools for this or that. At then very end I replaced less than 10 % with new ones (and for some, I had no choice, the original tool is no longer available).

  • Iweb/Domain name question

    Hi,
I am making my first Iweb site. I want to host the site through IWeb, but want to be sure I can use the simple domain name I own as the address, rather than a long www.mobileme.myname.domainname.com address. I see instructions involing setting up an alias on with the domain name provider, but wanted to ask around first.
Also, do you know if I can host more than one website through Iweb.
thanks for any and all help!
I have sent these questions to Apple support, but no response yet. I gather the new Iphone is taking up a lot of their tech support time.
    Kim

the url instantly changes and is long.
This is the way CNAME pointing works with .Mac. If you like you can make things shorter by shortening the names you give your site and pages.
Your "url", namely what people need to type to get to your site, is of course just the short version. What appears in the browser address bar is really irrelevant, but if it matters a lot to you, then you can undo everything you did for CNAME and switch to ordinary url forwarding/masking. With that, for every page on your site only www.myname.com will appear in the browser address bar for every page.

  • IWeb and GoDaddy FTP

Ok so I have an iWeb site already that I use with MobileMe. Now I want to add another site using godaddy ftp. So I follow the instructions that godaddy gives enter my username, password, etc and test the connection. It fails every time. I really do not know why it is not working or what is wrong. Should I call godaddy? or what.
    Thanks,
    Jordan

Firstly, do you have a hosting account set up with Godaddy? If not, then it won't work.
Also, iWeb 09 built ftp is notorious for not being that reliable. I would suggest that you download either Cyberduck or Transmit for free and use either of these to upload your other site.
You also should have been given a username and password when you set up your hosting account with Godaddy - if nothing works then you need to contract them, but try Cyberduck or Transmit first.

do i have to be a member of .mac to create websites on iweb?

do i have to be a member of .mac to create websites on iweb?
No, iweb sites can be put on other servers. Here are some tips:

  • Iweb/fetch/godaddy hosting-not loading

Need help. I designed my website on iweb and bought hosting thru godaddy, used fetch for FTP--tried to load the site and it wouldn't appear when I went to my site. I asked godaddy support for help. Here's how they answered:
Currently your index.html page is loading, but the code on this page is redirecting to remakeyourplace.com/REMAKE YOUR PLACE.html. You will need to add this page, or change the coding on your site. Unfortunately, we do not provide technical support with third-party scripting issues. You may wish to consult with a community forum online or do a search on your favorite search engine as other users may have encountered a similar problem in the past and may offer helpful solutions. We thank you for your understanding in this matter.
Can someone tell me in simple terms how to solve this problem? Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing, I just want to get my website up and running.I could really use the help. thx

"put" (the term fetch uses for loading) the entire folder to my website
That does not sound correct. The instructions tell you to upload two items: the folder which has the same name as you gave your site inside the iweb app, plus the index.html file which iWeb creates alongside that folder. The folder also has an index.html inside it, and that is fine, but in your server space you must be able to see two separate items, one file called index.html and one folder with the name you gave your site.
To avoid possible confusion, try publishing to your desktop, so you can clearly see the index.html file and folder which iWeb creates and which both need to be uploaded.

  • Video-iweb-fetch-godaddy. Videos on site play on PC, not on Mac. Ideas?????

I have created a website with video in Iweb. I used Fetch to upload it to godaddy. The site, including videos work flawlessly when viewing from a PC. When viewing from a Mac, the entire site works however the videos will not play. You can see the video window and what appears to be the progress bar indicating that the video is loading. When you hit the play button...nothing. In fact the entire player interface fails to function. I am not able to operate the sound button, the menu button, etc.
    Does anyone have any ideas.

    UPDATE
OK I have discovered that it is purely the interface with the player. I was able to get the videos to play & pause on my Mac by double clicking right on the player screen. Once playing, I was also able to use right and left (home & end) buttons to frame by frame.
I am going to need to get this interface working though.
    Any insight from anyone?

  • Want to purchase iweb but have questions. :)

I am considering purchasing iweb and I have a few questions
    1) I saw all of the webpages and they had no sound? is this typical?
    2) how many websites can you have with the .mac account? and do we need iweb to make a website?
    3) I wanted to make a website so that as soon as it loads a video (with sound ) will play without pressing a play button.
    4) can i use final cut pro to produce a video for this webpage?
    5) do i need .mac to run this web page? or do you all use other applications? please list other apps if any.
    and last question..............(drum roll)
    6) do I need to upgrade from my OS 10.3.9?
thank you all so much in advance for your kindness...

My answers pertain to using iWeb "as is" - which means not manually messing with the underlying html that it produces. Also, I don't have .mac, I use bluehost. so I will defer to any .mac users.
    1. You can drag audio files on but they show up with controls and need to be started manually.
    2. You can probably make lots of sites. .mac isn't very generous with disk space - that will most likely be your barrier.
    3. You will have to alter the html to make this happen. By default you have to press play.
    4. yes
    5. no, but certain features such as a hit counter are dependent on .mac. also, uploading only the changes to the site depends on .mac. I use a terminal session and rsync.
    6. no
iWeb is like the other i apps. it hides a lot from you. every time you publish to a folder ALL your sites will be published. this will only bother you if you don't use .mac - most likely. all your sites are kept in a single archive type file. It's made for people who know nothing about making a web page.
There is little flexibility. The sites follow templates based on CSS. IF you don't change the css your sites will be prevented from doing simple things like changing the color of web links.

  • Iweb SEO Tool Question Revised

Sorry I thought I should make this question simpler ...
Something has gone wrong with my iweb SEO tool
and it is messing up all the pages (published to a folder)
    that I update with it.
Everything looks fine in the tool - but it does exactly the
same bad thing to every page when I try and use it.
Is there some kind of reset or something that won't lose
all my tags etc? My site is massive and re entering everything
    would take a week.
Thankyou to anyone that has any idea of where I should start?

t does exactly the same bad thing to every page when I try and use it.
    Which is?
Try creating a new domain file with a test site and see if SEO messes that site up the same way.  If it doesn't then there's something awry with your original domain file and website.

  • IWeb and GoDaddy Hosting of Multiple Sites

GoDaddy users: I have the solution. I have 8 sites all hosted from one host account.
The key is you must have a separate FTP login for each website. In the past I would just use the root. Now, each site has its own.
    Examples:
    iWeb document name:memorialslive
    Site Name: meorialslive
    Server address: studiobuzz.biz
    User name: memorialslive
    Directory/Path: BLANK
    URL://www.memorialslive.com
    =================
    iWeb document name:ministrieslive
    Site Name: ministrieslive
    Server address: studiobuzz.biz
    User name: ministrieslive
    Directory/Path: BLANK
    URL://www.ministrieslive.com
    Etc.
What is also great is that the visit button now works too.
All is good. Apple is once again vindicated.

This is the answer to those of you having troubles with FTP uploads to your GoDaddy web host and maybe others.
