IWeb Quits when Publishing - Apple Genius said to Archive & Reinstall

Just spent over an hour with an Apple Genius at the Apple store to see if he could alleviate my problem with iWeb quitting whenever I tried to publish. I've been using iWeb for the last 5 months and have successfully posted hundreds of blog posts and pictures to my site on a .Mac account - but in the last 24 hours, I've been unable to get new posts published because iweb has been crashing prior to finishing the publish request.
I've tried deleting the iWeb preferences in /myname/library/prefernces as well as clearing my cache files and plain old rebooting. Also tried reinstalling the 1.1. update. The Genius reinstalled iWeb at the store and then I updated. Nothing's been fixed. I still crash when I publish. The only possible solution (according to the Genius) is to bite the bullet and do an Archive and Install. Anyone had luck with this?
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I would go with a second User account first, as suggested by James.
If this doesn't work, I would be thinking corrupt prefs files within the domain file itself....
1. Quit iWeb
2. Navigate to the domain file, User/Library/Application Support/iWeb/domain
3. CREATE A COPY OF THIS FILE, and then move it to somewhere safe.
4. Now back to the original, "control+click" (Right click if you have one of those new fangled two button mice (mouses?!?) )
5. From the pop-up menu, choose "Show Package Contents"
6. Sort the finder window by "Kind", it brings all of the plist files inside iWeb together.
assets.YourUserName.plist - This one is a regular problem!
ServerCachedResources.plist
sharedassets.plist
deletedComments.YourUserName.plist
I have deleted all of these when having different problems, not specifically iWeb quittting when publishing, I dont think that that has happened to me.
I do have a tendancy to lose blog comments, perhaps deleting these files has caused it.
I also know that once I have deleted them and relaunched iWeb, done a Publish All to .Mac, all of my problems have gone.
The plist files are all recreated the first time you do this.
You may or may not want to try this, but on a copy of your domain.sites file is there anything to lose? Other than your sanity?
You might want to do one at a time or all at once.
Anyway, thats my 2 pence worth, I'm English really!!!

I also forgot to note that this problem also persists with the new iBooks application. I cannot get past the 'Get Started' screen or access the iBooks Store. Again, all top bar menus are unresponsive.

  • Help! iWeb quits when I publish my sites.

I just added a second website to my iWeb. When I hit publish the program begins to log in to MobileMe, but then quits. I've sent in reports, but haven't received a response. What do I do?

Looks like I can only have one site per MobileMe account.
*NO, that's not correct*. You can have as many sites in your MMe account as you have room on your iDisk for.
The 1 site limitation refers to using a domain name with CNAME forwarding. You can have only one site with CNAME forwarding.
If you have domain names for other sites you will need to use the standard URL forwarding. Also the site that uses CNAME must the the site at the top of the left hand pane in iWeb:

  • IWeb quits whilst publishing

Has anyone else had problems publishing to .Mac?
I've had iWeb 1 since it came out & been very impressed with its ease of use. The version 2 came out & I could no longer use it as it quit on me every time I tried to publish.
I have found a work-around for this problem! I wonder if anyone else needed to hear it who is also struggling to use the updated iWeb with dotMac?
Please pass this on to everyone else who may need to know.
I copied my file with my current websites previously published through iWeb to dotMac called: 'Domain.sites2' to a seperate drive for safe-keeping. This is found in USER>>LIBRARY>>APPLICATION SUPPORT>>iWEB>>domain.sites2.
Then uninstalled the iWeb application using "AppDelete" (A free app. which removes all the associated files).
    I re-installed iWeb with iLife 08.
I then installed the iLife Support 8.1 update. Apparently iLife 08 needs to be updated by this patch before the iWeb 2.0.2 update patch.
Then I updated iWeb to 2.0.2.
iWeb now allows me to publish to dotMac as it always had before version 2.
The problem arose because when I first installed iLife 08 the software automatically, immediately updated iWeb to 2.0.2 without alerting me to the iLife Support 8.1 which needed to be installed first.
Is there any way stop the iLife 08 install searching for iWeb update before iLife update? This would probably prevent many other Apple Mac user from the frustration I have gone through. I nearly gave up on iWeb altogether.
Hope this can help someone else.
    Cheers

I'm having the identical problem, but the solution you outline did not resolve it. I'm still getting quits during publishing (after page creation is complete, but before upload commences), with a ton of malloc errors in the console.log file.
Very, very frustrating. The first real problem I've had with iWeb since v1.0.

  • IWeb quits when I try to delete a corrupted page.

    iWeb v. 1.1.2 running on OSX 10.5.1.
I want to delete a corrupted page, but iWeb quits every time I try to select it.
I have already been into Home>Library>Application Support>iWeb>Domain.Sites and deleted photos. Have checked Fonts and deleted duplicates, but suspect error is in the type somewhere. All other pages work, but need to delete this one before I can republish. iWeb also quits when I try to re-publish. Help very much appreciated.

    Try disabling your antivirus/antispam software.

  • IWeb quits while publishing

Today I cannot publish to MobileMe. The error message is "iWeb quit unexpectedly while using the SFWordprocessing plugin."
Never happened before. I did the upgrade to 3.02 yesterday.
    Any hints?

There's a recent topic about this here...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12266366&#12266366
Have a look at the last post which mentions that an Apple tech claims that this problem has been fixed in the latest V 3.0.2 update. I would hope so but, if this is true, why didn't Apple tell us?
I'm now going to assume that, as long as one has the latest version of iWeb, the "Million Dollar Trick" is no longer valid.
It appears that this poster's problem was a corrupt Domain file and was solved by dragging the pages, one by one, into a new site to eliminate the problem page.

  • How do I get the RSS feeds to work in iWeb'08 when published to FTP server?

There are so many unresolved questions because I have published to an FTP server (Netfirms). HOWEVER, my next task at hand is to resolve the issue of a non-working RSS feed and download capabilities.
    The published website is www.vibrationalvoyages.com.
When using Cyberduck to upload to Netfirms, I have to call the file name vibrationalvoyages.com because Netfirms organizes my files under a main folder called www (I also purchased the .org and .net extensions along with the singular spelling of the title, have forwarded those url's to the .com extension, which means I have different website names under Netfirm's main folder www, all pointing to www.vibrationalvoyages.com).
I have to drop the www. in front of vibrationalvoyages.com when publishing to a folder on my computer so, when Cyberduck uploads the files into the main www folder, they are read correctly and published as www.vibrationalvoyages.com. In Cyberduck, the ftp address to upload is vibrationalvoyage.netfirms.com
Before uploading, I use iTweak to insert the Statcounter tracking codes. Then, I use Rage to optimize the site to cut down on the weight (lots of photos). Then, finally, I get to upload which takes about an hour and a half.
SO, HOW DO I GET THE RSS FEEDS TO WORK AS WELL AS THE OPTION TO DOWNLOAD AN MP3 RECORDED MEDITATIONS? I eventually also want to include the download option of podcasts.
Please help! I am doing the best I can to stay in love with Mac but he is turning out to be a pot load of work and the love affair is wearing a little thin.
I haven't even asked about why iWeb still calls some pages 'The family picnic" or why it switches the url addresses to the individual pages. Probably because in the early stages, I copied an entry rather than just do a new one... but I'll worry about that later. I want to get this 'fixed' first and then I'll address the issue, following Roddy's advice to another writer about installing a flash player, for easy download of the MP3 meditations and for when I record the lessons as podcasts. Until I get this RSS issue resolved, however, podcast downloads are out of the question!

    Thank you for checking, Tom,
I'm confused. What do YOU get when you push the feed button? And why is it working on yours and not either of my machines?
Today, my Mac (w/Safari 4) gets the same error message: Safari can’t open the page Safari can’t open the page “feed:http://vibrationalvoyages/vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml”. The error is: “The feed could not be loaded because the content is not in a known feed format.”
My little ASUS (with a Linux operating system) gets a screen that says "The requested URL was not found". The URL on that page is http://vibrationalvoyages./vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_andApplications/rss.xml
On both error messages, the URL I was checking was:
    http://www.vibrationalvoyages.com/DivineLight_Vibrations_Principles_and_Applications/Divine_Light_Vibrations_Principles_ andApplications.html
The last URL was, of course, the URL generated by iWeb.
    So, my question still is:
HOW CAN I GET MY FEEDS TO WORK PROPERLY? If the problem is there shouldn't be an http:// after feed: then, how do I get iWeb to set it up properly?
    Any ideas?

You can see this for yourself by going to View > Text Encoding in your browser and setting it to UTF-8.  The characters will disappear.  They normally represent non-break spaces.   When the page is sent (or read) in Latin-1 encoding instead of UTF-8, they appear as Latin characters instead of empty space.
The different results of PageSpinner are probably because it is using some other encoding like MacRoman.
If you plug the url into this site it shows the encoding being sent by the server.

  • IWeb quits when trying to update my site

When I open iWeb it tells me I need to update my site file (something like that). I click Update and it starts a process and then crashes. Every time. Any ideas?

No luck here. Tried all that and still get the same results. iWeb crashes when trying to update my domain file. My site is way too far along to re-create, besides the fact that I shouldn't have to do that just to get the new version to work. This isn't like going from OS9 ot OSX, this is like going from 10.4.1 to 10.4.2. No where were we told that our old sites would not be compatible. I'm not going to jump through all sorts of hoops to get this to work, at least not through any more than I've already jumped through. Apple needs to acknowledge this is a problem and fix it. I've already shown them how to fix iDVD, it's their turn to fix iWeb!

  • Can't restore from TM after Apple Genius erased disc and reinstalled SL

I'm traveling out of my country (and without installation discs).  Because of corrupt HD (working, but slow...Disc Utility said drive was corrupt), had an Apple Genius do an erase and complete reinstallation of SL.  Now attempting to restore to my previous status, but
    1) when I use Time Machine with the backup disk, it has has grayed-out "Restore" for all past records.  TM won't do any restore for me.
    2) when I use Disc Utility to Restore, I can drag backup disc to Source box but my hard drive won't stick in the Destination box, whether I choose Erase Destination or not.
How do I get my last backup to my MacBook Pro?

You don't use Disk Utility to restore from TM. You use (preferably) setup assistant when you first startcreating your account.
Failing that, Migration Assistant after an account has been made, but that will create another account and there will be permissions problems getting at your data.
Read Pondini's TM articles; http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html for the full story.

  • Apple genius did an Archive & Install on my OS. Got home-no pics in iPhoto

    Hi,
My iMac wouldn't start and nothing I did was helping, so I took it into the Apple store. After trying a few things, the genius did an Archive & Install of Tiger, and everything appeared to be fine. So, I happily went home.
However, later in the day, I opened iPhoto for the first time and there were no photos showing up. No dotted outlines-- nothing. At the bottom, it says that the library contains 0 photos. When i look in the library folder in finder, I see that all my pictures are there and the folder is several GB large. However iPhoto, apparently, doesn't want to see them.
Now fortunately, I'm good about backups and I have a backup library that is usable and I'm pretty sure I won't lose anything (definitely not much). But this is weird and frustrating to me-- does anyone know how I might get my old library to show up exactly as it was (and as it is in the photo library folder)???
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    SS

    SS:
Since your image files are still in the Originals folder you can start a new library and import the originals from the old library. That's about your only option as the database file, Library6.iPhoto, has been overwritten and lost all the information about the photos. Here's how to go about it:
Creating a new library while preserving the rolls from the original.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same rolls as the original library. However dates on the rolls may be different but can be edited as you would the roll title.
Once this is completed you can delete the iPhoto library folder from the desktop. If desired, you can keep the older library folder to try other fixes on it.
In the future I recommend you make a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto file after each import and after doing a lot of editing and organizing in the library. Then if you experience a similar loss all you need to do is replace the damaged database file with the backup copy and you'll be back to the same place in the library as when you make the backup. See the tip at the end of my signature.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iweb quits when I try to edit my homepage

I was working on a different page to my website and I was about to save it, but first I wanted to check one more thing on my homepage. I clicked the homepage on the bar on the left side of the screen so I could navigate to it. Before iweb loaded the page it quit and I lost all of my changes. When I went back onto iweb and clicked the same page, it did it again. Now I am unable to navigate to my homepage on iweb to edit it. All the other pages work. Can anyone help?

  • IWeb crashes when publish to folder.

    Hi,
I'm having some difficulties with iWeb when I try to publish my site to a folder. My site contains among other pages, one that is quite large (a lot of text in mulitple textboxes).
When I tell iWeb to publish to a folder (since I do not have .Mac) it starts thinking and when it's finished publishing the large file it crashes.
I'm not sure wheter the problem is the large file or something else, problem is the crashing. Have not been able to publish my site!!! Realy anoying.
    Hopefully somebody got some suggestions.
    Thanx Mark

might be interesting to copy the "domain" file so you can restore it, delete the suspect page and try to publish that. You can copy the orginal file back if needed.
Good idea to backup that file once in a while anyway.

  • Strangeness on iWeb Pages When Published

I have multiple pages in iWeb that are all the same look but different text content. All the menus are the same. The colors are the same. I will only be changing text and the page name. So, I create the page the way I want and then duplicate the pages. I publish it to make sure all the links work but to my amazement, some of the page look right but many of the pages are different. I should add that I am not using the built in navigation menus--I created my own using text block with hyperlinks because I needed them to look a certain way. The menus are distorted (stretched, size reduced, position shifted), some of the menus  (text blocks with hyperlinks) have switched locations/order, the body regions (with graduated fill) are shifted down or even non-existent. I have a set of links in a text block (paragraph is a link) and the text formatting is also changed in different ways on each page (spacing is off, colors are different, link underlining could be on or off).
These are just one page duplicated and the page names changed with all the hyperlinks added.
I did notice that early on in my development, some page names also caused similar problems. If I named a page "About Us", I had similar problems but "About Me" worked, as did "ABOUT US". On some of the pages, the order of stacking (Send to back, Send to front) changed to menus in different ways. I know this sounds strange but this is my experience yesterday/today. I am so confused
Latest version if iWeb, latest Mac OS X Snow Leopard updates, 27" iMac i5 processor, 8 GB RAM, lots of hard drive space

Yes, you must use only the basic characters for site and page names. The following gives some info on page naming and characters not to use.
    Renaming a website or webpage
You can rename a site or page at any time by double-clicking its name in the site organizer and typing the new name.
The page name appears at the top of the visitor's browser.
The site name is included in the website's address (URL):
         http://web.mac.com/your account name/
    or
         http://web.me.com/your account name/
Renamed pages and sites (as well as the site's URL) change online the next time you publish.
IMPORTANT: If you rename a site, previously created links to your site won't work; be sure to notify your visitors, especially your blog or podcast subscribers.
iWeb now converts spaces in site names to "_".  Also avoid non-Roman characters; many get converted to numbers when you publish.
Other characters that aren't recommended for use in website names are: forward and backward slashes (/ \), brackets ([ ]), tilde (~), exclamation point !, question mark (?), "at" sign (@), number sign (#), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), asterisk (*), colon (:), equal sign (=), comma (,), and single and double quotation marks (' "). Using these characters may result in names with strange numbers in them.

  • IWeb quits when saving

I'm a former Mobileme user :-( and must now use webhosting provider to publish my homepage.
I uploaded my page via FTP (FileZilla) and worked perfectly. However, I need to update information on the page and cannot Save, IWeb crashes, and cannot "Publish to a folder"  either. Same problem. I have an old version of iWeb 08 (2.0.4) but up to now it has worked perfectly.
Thanks in advance for any tips or solutions

iWeb '08 has problems with Mountain Lion. This is caused by the system and not iWeb so there isn't a fix.
You need to run it under Snow Leopard or update to V 3.0.4 while the supplies of the iLife '11 disk are still available from places like Amamzon.
