IWeb, RapidWeaver, or GoLiveCS2?

If I ugrade to iLife06 from 05, I'll get iWeb, right?
Is RapidWeaver worth the extra money?
As an academic, I can get GoLiveCS2 from www.campustech.com for $75. This is a $399 retail program, and Adobe says it is "easy to use". Is this true? Will I get more than iWeb or RapidWeaver?
All I want is to publish family albums and videos, and produce an web newsletter for a club, but no e-commerce.

Yes.

Not if you have already purchase iLife with iWeb.

The "easy to use" is all relative. GoLive is not as easy as RapidWeaver or (from what I can tell from Job's keynote) iWeb. It's in fact an application largely designed for professional web designers. For those with no experience making websites, it can be difficult to use. $75 is a great price for a product like that and it is certainly considerably more powerful than iWeb and RapidWeaver; but for your purposes, it seems overkill.

  • IWeb, rapidweaver & .mac question

Given that I just cannot update my website nor publish to a folder (been trying since 9th Jan & just get the same unknown error message and nothing in these forums has addressed the problem) I'm considering re-doing my site with rapidweaver (I prefer iWeb, but if just doesn't work?).
Does anyone know if I publish to my .Mac account the new site will have the same URL? I really just use the site to publish my podcasts and I'm trying to avoid the hassle of having to set up a new feed etc. Also I have my own URL which is pointed to my .Mac account. Any ideas anyone? Or any suggestions on how I can fix iWeb?

As far as I know RW still publishes the pages in the Sites (HomePage) folder. You can enter a pathname to the correct location.
To publish the page to the iWeb folder, or any other location, you have to export the site.
A nice feature of RW is that you can export changes only, instead of the whole Site.

  • IWeb, rapidweaver & .mac account question

It has been impossible for me to to update my webpage since the beginning of January (I managed to pull some files from a folder into iDisk but tried again today but it hasn't worked.) I have been thinking about building a new site in RapidWeaver and uploading it to my .Mac address. Will this erase my current site? I ask because iWeb is in the url title http://web.mac.com/chrispinchen/iWeb/slow_Spain/Blank.html
and I guess that if I upload from RW it would create a different url?

  • Iweb, rapidweaver, freeway....

I've been using iWeb but Apple isn't really "supporting" it any more, there are no updates and although it is relatively easy to use I don't like some of it.  I'd like to make a gallery for my photography site and I don't like the way iweb handles it.  I'd like to see a strip at the bottom or somehow be able to pick the pictues you see and a slideshow.. I just want a little more control and some options.
Has anyone used either Rapidweaver or Freeway Pro and if so what do you think?
    Thanks,
    Susan

I'd like to find out what people in this discussion are using now? Is that permitted?
(EG: I'm 'bumping' this thread not because I'm a troll or anything, but because members here sounded like they were at the beginning of a journey and I'd like to hear how that went and what they are doing now).
These are the alternatives to iWeb that tempt me.
    Freeway Pro
    http://www.softpress.com/products/freeway-pro.html
    Rapidweaver

    Sandvox
    http://www.karelia.com/sandvox/
    or Flux?

And of course Adobe Muse which looks AWESOME and would be the one I would buy automatically, but for the fact that it is subscription based. That's just rude. It could end up really expensive over the long term. I don't like being charged for software when it might just sit there for a year without being used. I like owning it outright, just in case I need it again in the next 5 years (or when this computer reaches end of life...)

  • IWeb/Rapidweaver

Hey guys, I've been fooling around with Rapidweaver lately as I have a couple of other sites that I maintain for others & was thinking that I might use it to keep my band's site up to date as well. We're hosted on me.com & I was wondering if I could somehow get some of the functions of iWeb to work in Rapidweaver. Specifically the hit counter, the mirror image effect on images & the image functions in the blog page. I'd also like to know if anyone at Apple knows if there are any plans to upgrade iWeb so that it's more functional & diverse for those of us who have multiple domains to manage but prefer the simplicity of iWeb & one touch publishing. I'd be willing to pay for a more robust version of iWeb & I'm quite certain that I'm not the only one who feels this way. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!
    Peace - J
PS: sorry if this is a little off topic in the sense that it pertains to RW but I figured this would be the best place to ask! :0)

    Jason ~ Re hit counter:
"There is not a RapidWeaver plugin for this, but you could use the free Statcounter service to place a counter on your website. They provide the code and it’s pretty simple to plugin to your website."
Re mirror image effect: One way (of many) would be to add it outside of RapidWeaver via Picturesque.

As mentioned above, publishing appears to be simpler in iWeb '09 — available later this month...
"Easily manage multiple websites and publish one site at a time using MobileMe or FTP. Use built-in FTP publishing with virtually any web-hosting service."
    Read more here:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/iweb/#manage
And this "iWeb '09 First Impressions" article says:
"...true support for publishing multiple sites to multiple servers. iWeb '09 is still a library-based application, where each site gets its own sub-heading in iWeb's left sidebar. But clicking on a site's heading reveals publish settings for that particular site, so you can publish two different sites to MobileMe and FTP, or even to two separate MobileMe accounts."

  • OFFICIAL APPLE INFORMATION ABOUT COMPATIBILITY WITH EXPLORER

Here are some tips I've gathered from this forum on how to make sites more compatible with IE.
1 - do not use and frames or borders, etc. around photos.
    2 - don't use any reflections.
3 - create your own navigation bar with linked text* and turn of the iWeb Navigation bar. That's because the nav bar is all png based.
*Put your linked text directly under the Navigation bar. Then turn off the nav bar in the Inspector window. The nav bar will disappear and the linked text will move up to the top of the page as seen in this screenshot.
4 - use only the web safe fonts from the Font pane.
5 - do not use drop shadow on fonts.
6 - turn off smart quotes
7 - if you add a jpg to a page don't resize it in iWeb as that will cause it to be converted to png. Resize it to what you need before adding to the page..
The above will reduce the number and size of files associated with a web page quite a bit. Photos with fancy frames and reflections can generate a thumbnail png of around 110KB whereas the plain version will be a jpg of only 28KB. Although it doesn't sound like a lot, it will speed up loading of the page and be more darkside (i.e. PC) friendly.
Run a test with a test site and publish to a folder. Then follow the hints above and publish to another folder and compare folders.
Also there's a site, netrenderer that you can paste your site's url into an entry field and it will display how the various versions of IE will display your site. I don't know how accurate it is but may give you an idea of where problems areas are.

  • Can I change template?

I am trying to decide on the tool for a blog, and it's between iWeb, RapidWeaver and Freeway 4 Pro. It seems RapidWeaver is the best and most popular but iWeb has easily the best templates. The thing is can I change the template used at a later date?
Also with blog comments using iWeb, can I get notifications of any comments and can I moderate comments?
    Thanks for your help.

I don't use blogs but an trying to recall what I've read in this forum. As I recall if you change the template you may lose all the entries.

  • Does Pages create newsletters to be emailed?

    Hello,
I'm just learning pages, and see that they have some nice newsletter templates. I would like to create a newsletter that I can e-mail to a list.
Can pages do this? If so, do I send it in html format, or open it to see the html? I'm not sure how to do this, or if it can even be done.
    Thank you,
    Kirstyn Sierra

The easiest way - well, without spending any extra money - to create layout-heavy emails is this:
    1. Create the email in a web page app (iWeb, Rapidweaver or whatever). Keep it simple though as animations probably won't work in other people's email clients and videos etc. will make it a huge download.
    2. Publish the page a file on your desktop.
    3. Use Safari to open the index.html file
    4. In the File menu in Safari, choose 'Mail Contents of this page', or press cmd-i
    5. Safari slaps the webpage into an otherwise blank email. Voila.

  • Is there a good website creation app on the iPad, or should I save up and get a MacBook to use RapidWeaver/iWeb?

Is there a good website creation app on the iPad, or should I save up and get a MacBook to use RapidWeaver/iWeb?

Wasn't being condescending, this is a new thead that continues one he already started asking if he could get iWeb on the iPad. Two people explained to him that iWeb was being discontinued (along with MobileMe) and suggested Rapidweaver and two other apps as replacements. It was also explained to him that there were no web creation apps on the iPad because you need to run a local web server, such as Apache, on your computer in order to use them. This is why they work on the Mac because it does have such a server. The iPad does not have one and cannot run one. And I suggested using HTML code if he wanted to develop on his iPad.
You were aware that is how web creation software works?

  • IWeb vs Rapidweaver vs Wordpress

I want to create a website with a blog that has the ability to add comments and easily insert photos or video. I've been debating back and forth about using iWeb '09, Rapidweaver or Wordpress. Wordpress seems the most customizable but I'm somewhat intimidated how complicated it is to simply insert a video. Especially with iWeb's new features like custom domain name, simple insertion of pics and videos, plus Google Maps widget I'm seriously settling with iWeb, with the hopes that I don't outgrow it. I'm fairly computer savvy but know nothing about HTML hence my concern about user friendliness and convenience. Any advice would be most appreciated!
    Thanks.

Alexander ~ Many here would probably agree that you should avoid using iWeb's often problematic blog. One easy-to-use alternative is the free, web-based Posterous:
    http://posterous.com/faq
By the way, in iWeb there's a way to link to your external blog directly from iWeb's navigation bar.
Another thing to bear in mind is that iWeb is designed for personal websites, not commercial ones — so it lacks integrated Search Engine Optimization (SEO). If SEO is important to you, you may want to consider Sandvox Pro which has integrated SEO:

  • Podcast RSS Feed - iWeb to Rapidweaver?

I currently have a podcast on a website that was created in iWeb and is hosted on MacHighway. The podcast is listed on iTunes. I'm transitioning my site from iWeb to Rapidweaver and need to update my RSS feed so that I don't loose any of my subscribers.
Would anyone know the steps to take for this process?

I am aware of the need to rebuild the podcasting webpages from scratch in RW--I actually look forward to it as RW offers much more flexibility and creativity in page layout than iWeb does.
Could you elaborate on the steps to do this?: "When you create the podcast in it just specify the URL and name for the rss file to be the same as before: then it will simply replace the previous file and iTunes will see it as before."
Do I need to somehow name the RW pages with the same naming scheme as the old iWeb pages? I hope not as the iWeb url was so convoluted and I want to streamline it.
Judging by what I'm reading on the forums, i'm afraid I'll just need to rebuild and resubmit a new url. This is by far the easiest. It just pains me to start my subscriptions from scratch -- I have two years of subscribers built up, and no way to communicate with them a new url for the podcast!
Thanks for your time and insights!

  • Iweb vs. Rapidweaver

I´m actually considering converting/changing to IWEB 08 instead of RW.
I know there are several differences... but most importantly its important that my site looks good in IE... WHICH IT DOES NOT IN RW.
Does anybody in here have some knowledge of IWEB looks in IE on a PC?

It's interesting that your site does not render properly in Rapidweaver. In that application, it's the theme developer that has full control over whether the site renders properly in any given browser. The application itself has very little to do with that and to a certain extent, the plug-ins you use don't either so long as they aren't using bizarre HTML or styles to achieve what they need to. You should contact the developer of your theme and ask him or her to fix it.
In iWeb, there's no such thing as a "theme author" because iWeb has no architecture that pulls in theme HTML and CSS. Therefore it's impossible for anyone to insert hacks into the stylesheet to make things render properly in any browser. The best iWeb can do is create code that's compliant with the W3C standards and avoid code that's known to cause problems in major browsers. It has no way of knowing on any given day, which browsers are broken and require hacks.
With that said, it's important to note that the biggest issue isn't IE itself, it's whether the user using it has JavaScript enabled, has their cache settings set correctly, whether they're using the last update that was published for IE6, etc. In my version of IE, I have yet to see an iWeb site that doesn't look right. You'll get a lot of people viewing it from their work machines screaming to high heaven that iWeb doesn't produce proper code for IE, but they may not realize that companies often restrict scripts on those browsers to avoid malacious websites that would exploit them. Companies also run security software, home users do too, that interferes with whether certain kinds of content will appear on a page. That's not iWeb's fault. JavaScript has been around for a decade. PC users are just at a total disadvantage because their operating system is full of ways to use Javascript as an exploit. Therefore many PC's won't allow it and the user won't even realize this is the case. Meanwhile you're blaming Apple
You can never know exactly how any given IE user has configured their machine, but I know for a fact that if you have the latest version of IE6 and if it's configured to allow JavaScript, iWeb sites will render correctly. If you put HTML widgets on your page and insert bad code, well that's your fault, but I think everyone understands that. I had a guy having problems in Opera and Firefox but it turned out he had a giant image in his header that was causing the issue, not the browsers at all. So don't assume it's iWeb. In nearly every case, it's not.
People need to remember that iWeb was built as the last piece of iLife, as a mechanism to deliver your little iLife projects to the web. That's it's job and that's why the themes are the way they are. I don't think Apple ever expected people to start using it for small-businesses or other more advanced uses. But the interface is so fun and easy to use, can you blame anyone? Hence, I'm sure they're trying to figure out how to bridge the gap between the two camps. I'm fairly certain that's why you're seeing an HTML widget before even getting the menu option to "group" objects. Hum...
Ooops I'm rambling. Rapidweaver is good for people who need advanced features. It feels restrictive, creatively speaking, if you've ever used iWeb though. iWeb does not have the features that RW does. They each have different reasons for being, but only RW allows you full control over how something will render in any given browser. In iWeb that's impossible.

  • Moving from RapidWeaver to Iweb!!!

I have been using RapidWeaver at plus 1,000 pages. Can IWEB BE USED AT 5,000 PAGES. Hosting at BlueHost and have MySQL. And how many links can iweb handle. One big site

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It could but a single domain file with 500 pages would probably be overwhelming to iWeb. It would be extremely slow loading and if you every had to republish the entire site it would choke big time.
You could create multiple sites, each of several pages and in their own domain file and link them together.
You will have to recreate the pages in iWeb since it cannot read or import html files. That would be a lot of pages to recreate.

    hi timothylance
I upgraded from iweb06 to iweb08 within 24 hours of loading the website online (i use 1and1) to publish my website, I got a ton of complaints about the site crashing or hanging....
When iweb08 first came out, I had the problem and went back to iweb06, however I forgot about the issues of crashing/hanging for IE users and after 12 months redesigned the site in iweb08 again
again within 24 hours I got over 10 complaints, so I changed it back to the iweb06 and rang the clients that had complained and they said it was great no hanging or anything
I can only go by experience but each time I have tried to use iweb08, i get complaint, while using iweb06 I get no complaints....so it was a clear cut case
However I was getting fed up with having to add meta tags and other html after exporting, so I bought rapidweaver after reading the reports
I struggle thats its not wYSIWUG and doesnt look as good with ie as it does in safari
With iweb06 I dont see any difference with windows ie or safari
I need to be able to do what I do in iweb, but being able to have more functions, such as contact us pages, guestbooks and text flowing from one side to the other that seem so easy to do in rapidweaver
