IWeb replacement suggestions

My iWeb website has grown long in the tooth. I am looking for software that a photographer with no website creation experience can use (which is why i used iWeb). I have looked at the WordPress templates but they look a bit involved. Maybe they arent once I get in to them. My site is obviously going to have numerous (as in hundreds) of photos.
Thanks!

Gary ~ Consider the suggestion in this post:
What happens to iWeb when there's no MobileMe?
Here's just one of many photographer's sites made in Weebly:

  • State of iWeb replacement options...other ideas?

Like many others, I've been searching for an iWeb replacement.  Here's my next findings:
Sandvox - way too dumbed down (can't even set page widith).
RapidWeaver - not WYSIWYG (editing is separate from layout), can't modify templates easily.
Muse - best candidate, but still in beta (and that subscription model....)
Freeway Pro/Express - WYSIWYG but not free layout (i.e. can't put an image where you want it - it flows with the text) - still requires knowledge of HTML, tables, etc.
Dreamweaver - heavy duty, not remotely free layout, requires HTML knowledge.
Flux - Dreamweaver done right, but still requires knowledge of HTML layout, and doesn't do free layout.
In other words, there's no decent iWeb replacement out there right now that I can find.  Here's what 'decent' means in my mind:
    1) Able to publish to any server
    2) True WYSIWYG (edit and preview together)
    3) Able to do basic site formatting (like page width) without hand-editing CSS (or breaking open app bundles)
    4) Able to do drag/drop placement of images and text without futzing with tables, etc (i.e. free layout).
Maybe in sum, what I'm looking for is an iWeb that generates good code :-).
    Have I missed any options?

I have played with a bunch of different iWeb replacement programs. I have a product brochure that I am transferring to a web page and I have tried it in just about all of the packages you mentioned (just not dreamweaver or Muse). In Sandvox and Rapidweaver, I gave up; I could not get the programs to display what I wanted. Kind of a shame because the interface seems very nice otherwise. I was pretty convinced that Flux was the best I was going to get.  Flux is overall good and gives a lot of flexibility. It is not as difficult to learn to be productive as it might seem given its easy access to the HTML code being generated. As discussed above, putting stuff in div elements and walking them around the site is pretty easy to do. I have tried to get fancy with a few things, but each time, I got twisted to the point that my project became un-workable. I can accept that this is because I am not a code guy, but then again, I am also looking for something that helps me avoid code as much as possible. I was disappointed that after I got my site organized in Flux the way I wanted it, I could not get it to display correctly in either Firefox or Safari. Not sure what I did wrong, but was not about to start over. I am sure I can get there with Flux, but I think they still have some work to do before the program is really a viable option for non-developer / weekend designer types like me.
I was very surprised how much I like Freeway. I think this is the way to go. I have been playing with the pro version and I can drag photos directly in and place them anywhere without any trouble. I can mask (or crop) easily with drag and drop simplicity too. It is not too bad getting into the tables when I need to to modify page sizes or HTML text details. Right now, I am pretty enamored by Freeway as a replacement. I think it is very well done and I was able to generate my brochure  very quickly without ever using the program before. I should give credit to Flux for some of that. After the time I put in with it, I picked up a little bit about styles and site organization that helped me understand better what I was doing in Freeway.
As a benchmark, it took me about 3 hrs to create my page in Flux (but again, it did not publish well in the two browsers) and about 45 min in Freeway from a cold start (and the page published fine). Sandvox and Rapidweaver Did Not Finish because I could not get the layout I wanted. I will try Muse as well as the standard version of Freeway to see how those compare.
For reference, I created my page in iWeb in 20 min. I have no idea what the code looked like, but it published as expected and seemed fine for my purposes. I too will miss that program.

  • Is Iweb replacing homepage?

Is Iweb replacing homepage? If not, which is better and what is the difference!

the biggest difference is that homepage is web based whereas you upload you files to you idisk and construct the pages online, which can be done from any virtually any computer (even a pee cee) anywhere.
Iweb is created on your computer and the final product is uploaded to idisk or a server. It can be updated from other locations or computers (apple), but you would need the "domain" file created by iweb and the ability to run iweb.
The comments I've seen don't indicate that apple is doing away with homepage, but who knows.
Iweb is a lot more flexible than homepage and hopefully as it goes thought a couple of updates they will work a few problems out.

  • Dynamic Raindrops Effect for iWeb - any suggestions?

I would like to add a dynamic raindrop effect (preferably free) to an iWeb '09 page.
Something similar to the effect found here:
    http://www.dseffects.com/scriptsfx/DSRain/DSRain.html
I tried the one listed above, but couldn't get it to work.
I'm currently using a snow effect which works fine. I was hoping a similar snippet exists for rain. I've found several, but none seem to actually work.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

The snowflakes drift (as opposed to simply falling), they also congregate at the bottom of the screen, so I suspect more than a simple gif replacement would be required, and as I've already indicated, I know next to nothing about code.
I'm seeking a solution that requires nothing more than pasting a line of code in the HTML snippet widget, and possibly coping a .js file to my site. Anything more complicated than that would require detailed step-by-step instructions.

  • S205 replacement suggestions?

I've got an S205 supplied with Win7 64 and 4Gb RAM. It's my ideal netbook - or it was until I took it on a flight from Gatwick this time last year. Security turned it on, and returned it to its bag (a neoprene wallet inside another bag) and it overheated. I got a new harddrive where I was in Greece (on holiday), and a reinstall of Win 7 64 ... with consequent problems with Greek and US English drivers! - giving me a big part of the cure, however something else is damaged, and the machine hangs up from time to time. It's a big irritant, and I've been persevering because I can't find what I want as a replacement. The problem is finding a replacement: Intel irritates me, the S205 is my preferred AMD, the size is right, and (before) it worked brilliantly and adequately fast enough. Plus, the price was right. (And the right number of ports, even VGA to drive my projector).
Does anyone have a suggestion for a like-for-like replacement - price, size, capability, ports, other specs? My real work I do on a hi-spec desktop, but when I travel, there is a limit to what I can carry as I'm quite old. I would buy the same S205 again. I fear the current machine  would cost as much as a new one to repair, even if it was possible. It has to be Windows because my compiler for code development runs in Windows.

A modem/router is two devices in one......a modem and a router that are designed to fit into one package. A gateway is the same thing as a modem/router, it just has a different name. Time Warner calls a modem/router or gateway at modem/WiFi. Same thing.
It makes things somewhat more complicated to have two devices, a physically separate modem and a physically separate router wired together on your network, but  a number of users do it this way.
Most users can simplify their networks by using a modem/router or gateway device rather than try to set up and configure two devices..... a separate modem and separate router.....which may or may not work well together.
    Your original post said......
Does anyone have a suggestion or recommenation for a replacement to either of these modem/router gateway devices:   Motorola SBG 6580 or  Netgear CG814WG v 2
So, this reads as if you do not want to use a Motorola SBG 6580 or the Netgear device that you already have.
If that is not the case, then I have used and would recommend the Mototola SBG 6580 with Time Warner's service.
If you want to go the complicated route....then I would recommend a Netgear CMD31T modem only....and an Apple AirPort Extreme.....which is the current setup that I have used here for the past year or so.
This will likely cost twice as much as the Motorola SBG 6580....but will not perform twice as well. Overall, things will be a bit better with the separate modem and separate router.
Always keep in mind though, that what works well for one user may not work well for another, so there are never any guarantees.
Why not ask Time Warner if they have a recommended modem/router or gateway for their service? Hopefully, some other users will reply to your post so you can get a range of answers.

  • Superdrive has failed - need replacement suggestions

My superdrive is in the process of failing. Symptom is that when there is a disk in the drive, the machine won't boot! Boots fine with no disk in the drive. So, I'm replacing the superdrive.
Does anyone have any suggestions for aftermarket models?
    Thanks.

Well, I got a budget Sony superdrive to work in my beige G3 under OS 9, though Panther acted a total prat with any superdrive I tried - even with using PatchBurn. Just some flooky issue with the device profiles not loading in Panther.
In OS9, the drives (both the Sony and the Pioneer I used) could even boot. I don't think at this point, with the system you list on your profile, that you'll have a problem with any manufacturer. I'm a bit baffled that your drive is going up the spout as soon as it is - have you tried cleaning the lens? It's a real PITA to do - I usually pull the drive and open it up and clean with a damp q-tip with a bit of ammonia and water and dry w/the other end. The lens looks delicate but they are actually more rugged than you think and can be jostled a bit (a little bit) during cleaning w/o any problems.
(FYI, the Sony SuperDrive is now happily purring away an old external LaCie USB DC-ROM case, and living with my brother. The Pioneer DVR-112D is in my beige G3 which is now a dedicated vinyl LP and VHS ripper and burns DVDs daily)
Beyond Panther's problems with it, the Pioneer DVR-112 runs like a champ.

  • IWeb forum suggestion

I am glad to see that the iWeb forum has been split into two sections for the new iWeb '08 and the "old" iWeb, but would like to suggest that the older version be so labeled. Right now it is just called "iWeb" but really it should be labeled "iWeb '06" or "iWeb 1.x.x" or something... Just a suggestion!
Also it might be good to consider doing something with the iWeb forum that exists under the .Mac heading. It is confusing having iWeb located in two different places. The iLife/iWeb forum gets a bulk of the traffic anyway.

I am chiming in here because I am not sure how else to ask someone for help. I have downloaded a fresh Apple update with 4 updates. They downloaded and installed okay but during the autorestart my mac has been stuck in the restart white screen for about 2 hours now. This is with the grey apple and the spinning circle. Should I force shut down and restart or let it ride out longer? Is this normal?

  • Graphics Card Replacement Suggestion

My current ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card fan is making a loud noise and I need a suggestion for a compatible graphics card replacement.  I don't play video games but I do watch streaming videos from HULU, Netflix and YouTube often.  I have a dual monitor setup as well.
Current PC; HP Pavilion Elite HPE-110f running Window 7.

    Hi:
I would go with the Radeon HD 6450.
Get one of the fanless models listed. Then you have no fan to make noise or conk out on you (such as the ASUS or Sapphire cards listed at the link below).
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=HD%206450&bop=...
The card has a maximum power draw of less than 30W and it is the optional card offered on HP business desktops with 240W power supplies.
Make sure you uninstall your old graphics card and driver in the device manager, shut down and unplug the PC before installing your new video card.

  • My iWeb pics are not in my iPhoto library - and have not been for a long time.  I want to get my photos back off iWeb - any suggestions on how to do this?

I want to get copies of the pics on my iWeb but they are not in my iphoto library anymore.  Does anyone know how I can get them - easier and faster than downloading my own pics one at a time?

  • Iweb replacement

I've built several sites using iWeb, but Apple's move to iCloud will kill blog comments, so I'm looking elsewhere... any recommendations?
I have to be able to build a site with multiple blogs Specifically:
On http://www.mouzon.com, I have a blog where I archive news, a bunch of blogs where I sell our house plans (one blog for each plan type,) two blogs for our image collections, a blog that is our book store, three blogs that describe our services, and a conventional blog where I talk about the things that might be interesting to those that follow our work.
I do similar things on originalgreen.org, newurbanguild.com, and guildfoundation.org, taking blogs to places they don't normally go.
I did all this in iWeb, knowing almost nothing about html. Is it possible to replicate these sites with some other tool without dedicating months of my life to learning html? Or is it even possible at all?
And is there any chance of iWeb living on in some other form, like Filemaker did with a new company, or any chance of Apple launching a pro version? Some word of this could keep me as an Apple customer and not cause me to waste tons of time migrating elsewhere.

Apple are not getting rid of iWeb, just MobileMe publishing.
iWeb is an app and you can still continue to use it.  You just need to upload your site to another host such as GoDaddy or HostExcellence etc.
You are correct that Blog comments won't work - they were MMe only, but there are alternatives, such as adding http://www.intensedebate.com as a comment system instead.
You could always consider using WordPress as a blog instead and just linking to it from your website - this is what I have always done and I have managed to change the templates in WordPress, so they have the same colours and look of my website.
Have a look at http://www.weebly.com too.
You don't need to look for an alternative to iWeb yet.  It's an app and will still work.

  • IWeb Improvement Suggestions

Thought I'd post this here to see what everyone else thinks. I originally sent the email to the iWeb Feedback address. (BTW, I know that you can upload only updated pages to a third-party host, but, let's face it, it's a needlessly real pain in the neck.)
    "Hi,
I've been using iWeb since about a week after it first came out in '06. I've been very happy with it -- despite some issues, some of which were fixed in the '08 version (like knowing when text is being converted into an image) -- and have stuck with it, despite investigating RapidWeaver and SandVox. Basically, I know the app pretty well by now but lately I've noticed a few things that are missing or could be improved.
    a) You have got --simply got to -- allow people FTPing to outside hosts to publish only updated pages. This is the Number One complaint among experienced users, I think. I understand that you're trying to push people in the direction of .Mac hosting, but you're not persuading anyone (I have a .mac account, by the way). Your servers are way too slow to handle real websites and all you're doing is seriously irritating users. I came pretty close to switching to RapidWeaver SOLELY because of this pointless bit of aggravation. I saw a couple of other guys a few days ago on your forums writing that they had in fact gone to RapidWeaver for this reason and were dropping iWeb as a result. In short, in this respect, RapidWeaver (or any web-design app) beats the pants off you.
    b) The Zoom facility needs major attention. When I'm working with iWeb I find myself leaning in to the screen to focus on one small part of the page. You need to integrate a magnifying tool of some sort. This would make things a lot easier for a lot of people.
    c) Along the same lines, I'm hankering for a quick-and-easy "ruler." The blue guidelines you have are fantastic, but when I'm trying to line up things or measure exact distances between objects/text, I really need a ruler to judge pixel distance, etc. When I'm doing at the moment is drawing a line, moving it to the right spot, cutting it to length, and judging from there whether the distance between, say, two text boxes is appropriate. This is an unnecessarily onerous and time-consuming process -- and it's not even that accurate.
    d) I'm a journalist and author, and I'd really appreciate some templates/themes that captured "writing" stuff: typewriters, pens, quills, paper, gold-embossed letters, and NEWSPAPER-TYPE COLUMNS.
    e) You need clearer and more obvious instructions to help people learn about web-safe fonts. The flood of queries and comments in the Forums from people wanting to know why their website looks different in Explorer is neverending. The problem is that they blame iWeb, not Explorer, which is an admittedly atrocious browser. What I would really like is some ability to "see" the iWeb website in various browsers BEFORE I publish it to a folder or .mac. There must be some way of replicating a browser-shot within iWeb so that people's frustration would be immensely reduced at the outset. What's happening now is that I have to publish to a folder, upload it via CyberDuck to GoDaddy, then check out what the site looks like in PC Explorer and Firefox. If something small needs to be changed, I have to do it all over again -- and since you refuse to allow us to publish only altered pages, this whole process of changing one tiny thing can take up close to an hour. And my website's only about six pages long! I don't even want to think about what happens if you have 36 or 56 pages.
    f) Please oh please oh please introduce expanding menus, accordions, and the like . . .
    g) What is up with the inability to handle more than a single Site at a time and being unable to split them up before publishing? Thank goodness for the third-party developers who have come up with ways to get around this, but to tell you truth, they shouldn't need to. Fix this asap.
    h) The Blog pages need work. I tried to start a blog for the website using iWeb and, though it looks OK, I've edging heavily towards only providing a link to WordPress or Blogger and keeping it there instead. Why? Because, I'm using the Darkroom template (which comes with Futura font) with Trebuchet (because Futura is not web-safe, thanks to Mr. Bill Gates, meaning that I have to change everything to an image). Now, on the Entries page, Trebuchet works fine, but on the landing Blog page, no matter how many times I change the font to Trebuchet and save, it always reverts to the Futura default as soon as I leave it in IWeb and come back -- which of course will lead to problems with Explorer. On top of that, if I have to update the blog, say, twice a day, your rule on publishing and uploading every single page again makes the whole blogging thing a real chore. I'd vastly prefer keeping the blog on my own website, but you're kind of forcing my hand.
    i) OK, that's about it."

  • HD replacement suggestion needed

I want to replace my old HD in G4 iBook.
Are there any limitations when selecting new hard drive? Is there a limit related to maximum capacity? Somewhere I was told 100GB is the upper limit...
Is there a particular model to recommend (in terms of speed, rpm, noise)?

    Hi Jagoche,
The only limit in HD size for the iBook is that of the current largest size produced in the compatible format, i.e. 250GB, PATA, 2½"
I can't make any specific recommendation re make though I'm perfectly happy with my Hitachi 160GB 5400 rpm. I think that it is slightly noisier that the original but the noise is in no way intrusive. Re speed generally, I think 5400 rpm is the fastest for all the larger sizes of PATA notebook drives.
If you are planning to install the new drive DIY post back for instruction links and advice. I did mine DIY with no problems, others have inadvertently dislodged the power cable attachment. Not a welcome scenario... Hence the offer of advice
    Good luck,
    Adrian

  • Hp dv5-1040ew hdd replacement. suggestions

My hard drive went out on my laptop couple days ago and now i'm wondering what would be the best hard drive for it. I was curious whether it is possible to get a sata II ssd but couldn't find right info about that.

    Hi:
You can get up to a 500 GB 2.5" SATA II notebook hard drive.
5,400 RPM if you want longer battery time between charges
7,200 RPM if you want more performance.
Below is the link to the service manual for your PC.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01550108.pdf
Hard drive removal and replacement procedures can be found in chapter 4. You can do it yourself.
Just save the old hard drive because you need to take some things off of it (caddy and screws), and transfer them to the new hard drive.
If you live in the USA or Canada, you can order notebook hard drives at reasonable prices from this vendor.

The 7,200 RPM drive I recommend is this performance one.

  • Replacement suggestion for Notes?

i am using Notational Velocity (just awesome) for long lists of things and Reminders for small tasks with the hope that i will integrate Reminders more into my daily routine with location services and my iphone in some way.
does anyone have a suggestion for small /lists/ of items? i would ideally like to be able to sync with my mac pro (which can only upgrade to Lion) and my iPhone.
any suggestions on something quick and light?
    thanks

The Apple store sells desktop drives of 1TB and 2TB. But they are generally priced like a "convenience store". Store employees are not on commission, but the prices of their drives are so steep (and unjustified) they may be embarrassed to recommend their own drives, and conflicted about recommending Brand X.
There has been a lot of consolidation in the Hard Drive manufacturing business. But there are very few "bad" drives on the market today. Most drives that you buy will work fine.
Personally, I dislike "Green" drives because they spin down by themselves whenever they feel like it, and there may be a delay in accessing your data waiting for the drive to spin up again. That works for backups, but is not OK for your main drives.
A large overall performance boost can be gained from placing only the System, Library, Applications, and hidden unix files on its own drive, and moving User files to a separate drive.
If yours is a MacBook Pro with a single slot for a notebook drive, not a 65lb tower with four drive bays, there are different considerations.

  • Superdrive reliability in PB G4 - replacement suggestions?

I've checked the forums and see similar postings, but not so much recently. Of course, it's an older machine, [Powerbook G4 Titanium, 1Ghz] and we can't expect them to last forever
My superdrive isn't as old as the pb, but it's more than 2 years old now. The original drive worked flawlessly burning CDs and DVDs just fine until just shy of 6 months left on my AppleCare policy. Then my display bezel came apart (NOT a superdrive problem) and I had to send the pb into Apple for repair. 2 display screens, 3 superdrives and 3 or 4 (maybe 5?) logic boards later, oh yes, 5.5 months later, most everything was working again, and my AppleCare ran out. I had more problems with the unit AFTER Apple worked on it than I had in the first 2.5 years, and it seemed that something else was broken each time I got it back. A month after AppleCare ran out, I was back for one last time with the superdrive failing, so that's the newest component.
Anyway, I realized that some media just didn't work well, and between the 3 drives in my 2 identical powerbooks, and a 15" iMac 877Mhz, the only real issue was compatibility (reading things written on other drives). The iMac will only burn on high quality DVDs and some brands of CDs and will not even recognize a CDRW. The UJ-815 drive in my laptop "has been" the most reliable, and would write on media that the iMac would fail to verify on.
That was until about a week (or two ago). It was working just fine. I had just burned 3-4 DVDs and played a Stargate-SG1 DVD just fine. Last week, I went to play a different Stargate DVD and it just ejected it. Now, no matter what I put in it, it just ejects it after a couple of what I guess to be seeking attempts, or re-calibration noises. My other powerbook seems to also eject the same blank media, but disks that have data or movies are read just fine.
    Is the drive dead?
Or will it just magically work again in a week or so of not trying to use it?
I've seen the user 'eww' has responded to a lot of these topics with good information, so I'd like his or her opinion, and that of anyone else with any experience with this.
If it's dead, then I'll need some kind of replacement, and it seems that an internal replacement is the best bet, as most newer external drives are USB 2.0 and I'm fairly sure this is a USB 1.1 system. Is there a list of replacement drive available somewhere, that are compatible. I see nothing on Apple's own site, and I'm not about to put in the exact same drive, now that DVD+R and the new dual layer DVDs are what's mostly available in stores.
OWC has apple compatible drives at ~$99 (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MCTDVDSDB8DL/) but I notice these are all 8x, whereas I understand that even the Matshita DVD-R UJ-815 can run at 16x if the firmware is upgraded.
I'm running 10.5 on my laptop, and 10.4 on my wife's, and 10.3 on the iMac. (Yeah, I know, I ought to make them consistent!)
So, please... I'd like to get some recommendations, as I know there other drives out there, that must be compatible. I took a look at the xlr8yourmac drive reviews, but am still slogging through them one at a time to see if there's a particular brand or model that is compatible. Most of the upgrades were talking about drives compatible with Panther or Tiger, so I hope to hear more recent info from the folks here.
    Thanks.
    -Carl

Ok, Fry's didn't have ANY slot load internal drives, so that was a bust.
I took out the superdrive and opened the top. The inside is nearly spotless. No dust bunnies or anything. I didn't look at it under a bright light, and will do that during the day, but it doesn't look like there's much in the way of anything to clean. Nothing looks out of shape, bent or mis-aligned, although that latter part is a little difficult to determine without it plugged in and loaded with a CD/DVD.
My PB didn't like it when I tried to power it up with the "accessories" (modem, etc.) not plugged in, so I plugged them back in to the flex cables, with everything connected except for the optical drive itself. Now it's happy even without the superdrive.
I'll see if there's anything that looks like it needs cleaning or polishing and go from there. The underside of the lid looks to have some wear, or some residue from some media (the top) having made contact with it, but nothing major.
I'll let you know if the drive accepts any media after I re-install it. At this point, my guess is that I will not see any improvement, and should start looking for a replacement.
The Pioneer DVR-K06 seems to be the frontrunner (the OWC drive at last review didn't seem to handle CDRW, but they have one for $150 or so that does). The OptiArc drives are made by Sony/NEC and all the web references I found so far were in the UK or europe. The newest one of those had something called LabelFlash which seems really cool, but (of course) may not be available on the Mac, unless Toast can use it. (It allows you to flip the media over and burn a label onto the surface of the other side.) You'd think that that would be a great "Mac" feature
Any comments? Or ideas on what next? Looks like an online search for a "current" K06 model...
