IWeb Resaving Graphics

Is there a way to keep iWeb from resaving graphics when I publish to my FTP space? I get jpg files that look different from the preview in iWeb. I have been going to my ftp space and uploading/replacing with the original file but that is tedious.

Wyodor,
File format doesn't matter because if I take the original file and replace the one on my FTP space that iWeb uploaded then all is fine. Something is happening from the time the file gets drag-n-dropped into iWeb through publishing to my FTP space. I think it is the publishing. It is recreating every file. I opened a window of the "fixed" published webpage and did [cmd +] until it was as big as it could go. Then I published the website to a folder on the desktop and opened the same page in another Safari window and blew it up using [cmd +]. I then took a screen shot of them side by side. It is obvious that there are artifacts showing up on the left window which is the one that iWeb published. The image on the right is the original file that I dropped onto my webspace (replacing the one iWeb uploaded.)
OR
if this image isn't showing it I uploaded it and you can veiw it here.
http://thekrepsfamily.com/vrl/pics/Screenshot.png
It's hard for me to believe that this image alteration is something that nobody has ever noticed.
Maybe I'll check into what file type I can import into iWeb. if I can import a lossles tiff then maybe the color won't change when it gets converted by iWeb. I don't know. I just know that as you can see above, these types of color changes are unacceptable.
Any help is appreciated.

  • IWeb and graphics/Flash?

Ok, so i'm working on making a website for my company and i wanted to know if there was any way to put moving graphics on it. something like flash or along those lines. is there a program, or just easy steps to accomplish this?

If you already have a flash presentation or graphic ready to go, you may be able to embed it into a page that you create in iWeb. It will most likely (unless your presentation is Flash 5 based) require editing the HTML code that is generated from iWeb. There is no way to create such a presentation in iWeb directly.

  • Urgent Deadline to Fix PC Mess Displaying iWeb Created Site -- Please Help!

IWeb 08 and web-design-savvy Mac users, I really need your help... and I'm on a tight deadline.
I've designed the website promoting our group's big event by using iWeb 08; I was very troubled when I discovered tonight that there are major display problems in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 on Windows PCs. This website is essential to promoting the event and I can't afford to lose traffic because of display issues.
    Here's the site.
    www.spj.org/pittsburgh
Can anyone walk me through the best fixes for the following problems?
On a PC in Internet Explorer:
    1) The home page display chokes up during scrolling; there's a sort of "stuttering" effect in rendering of simple images that slows down the PC and gums things up.
    2) The layout of the center-justified text is trashed by Explorer's insertion of large blocks of blank spaces and a line return in an area where I change the color of the text for emphasis.
On my web pages that display the iWeb-generated navigation links:
    3) The label for the final navigation link drops down to a second row, creating a ragged, poorly formatted look.
    4) If you click on the navigation link for the current page, it takes you to the home page instead of keeping you on the current page.
None of these problems happen in Safari for Windows.
In Firefox for Windows, I believe that only problem 3 happens.
Explorer 7 for Windows appears to fix only problem 2.
-Will an "optimizer" program fix any or all of these problems?
-Can I open the iWeb-created html files in Netscape Composer, SeaMonkey, TextEdit, or any other application, change the html code to fix any of this, and save the repaired result?
-Is there any change in the formating within iWeb that I should try that will put things right on a PC?
Thanks for any help you can offer. I have to fix this somehow this weekend.

    Cédric,
Thank you. I will definitely build my own navigation menu, as you described to solve problems 3 and 4.
I'm still struggling with the decision of how to deal with issues 1 and 2 On a PC in Internet Explorer. (See below.)
I did already update to iWeb 2.0.3 before I created the site.
    Here are options I'm considering.
One is to take screenshots of the site's current iWeb-generated graphics, turn them into jpegs, and reinsert them into the page as jpegs. My thinking is that it would eliminate any Explorer problems with rendering png images and effects.
Another option is to rebuild the entire site in another program, trying to imitate the look of my current iWeb-created site. The problem is, I don't know if I have to skills to properly create my PayPal online registration section, which is essential. If I do try to redo the entire site, I haven't decided to use Netscape Composer (my old method), SeaMonkey (its successor), or some other application with which I have no experience. If I do recreate the entire site, I'm going to have to be careful to exactly duplicate the individual page names, so that I don't break the links for anyone who has linked to the current pages.

  • What is the best size for using a graphic as my homepage?

I am building my website in iWeb
My graphic designer is going to send me a graphic that I want to use as my homepage graphic - I will input some text.
He keeps asking me what size graphic I want (he charges by size)
If this means file size is my answer 72dpi/ppi = the most efficient?
What size should image be from graphic designer? in inches? in pixels? in KB and MB?
    Is GIF format is best?
I want this to be nearly the full page size. It will be in Black Red and White (the white being a bright white, the red a deep almost crimson)
I'm a novice. Need good advice for placing this graphic into iWeb as my homepage... Mahalo ~!~

According to Apple, the width of most webpages is 980 pixels. If you request that your graphic designer make a JPEG image of approximately that width, you can then use this free, online tool to reduce its file size without affecting its perceptual quality:
    http://www.jpegmini.com
If the image appears too slowly in a browser, you could reduce its file size further (with a loss of quality) via the Preview app:

Also see the option in iWeb's Preferences “Optimize images on import.”

  • Graphic in front of video doesn't work

Hello everyone, I have a problem with iWeb. There is supposed to be a graphic in front of my video http://web.mac.com/chris.ducasse/iWeb/Artist/Video.html
However, I cannot get it to work. In iWeb, the graphic is "brought to front" and the video is "sent to the back." In a web browser, the video still shows in front of the graphic.
Any help, or technical reasons why, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • 1.1.1 fixed all, now a delight to use.

1.1.1 fixed all the upload, error message, site corruption and non functional features problems I was having!
I "published all" and it fixed the site anomalies, upload is very fast.
It is now a delightful application!
    Chris

iWeb 1.1.1 is a fun, useful - if limited - tool.
I do not have a .mac account; so the recent fix does not apply to me.
I still cannot build separate sites on separate servers using iWeb 1.1.1.
I cannot reduce the size of image files in iWeb 1.1.1 either.
The only luck I ever had was a two day period when iWeb Enhancer beta worked to help separate the sites I built with iWeb; but since iWeb 1.1, I have not been able to use iWeb to build more than one site on more than one server.
The fixes offered prior did not fix the problem.
I am happy for those who are getting what they want out of iWeb.
Since buying this iMac Intel Core Duo, I have not been able to use my prior image creation and site building tools; and so have been trying to do so with iWeb and Graphic Converter.
I truly hope that one of the future iWeb updates provides an iWeb Enhancer type function and allows for reducing the size of image files for faster downloads.

  • Auto Delete Caption in photo page

    Hi,
When importing from iPhoto Photo Album, the application will display both the photos and captions. Is there a way that I can make all the captions disapper?
    Thank you,

Select the photo grid or an image in it, then drag the Caption Height slider all the way to the left in iWeb's Graphic inspector.

  • Workflow question: managing photos

Let me say first, I am new to iWeb.
I have lots of photos in iPhoto. I use some of them on my web pages.
Obviously I want the images in iWeb to be smaller in size than what I keep them in iPhoto.
So, do you create a new folder, put COPIES there, resize and use these in iPhoto?
I know this sound so elementary, but be nice, I am used to Windows folder structure...
    Thanks in advance.

    Yucholian,
A similar question arose recently on here. If you haven't already, check it out at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6070276#6070276
iWeb resizes graphics larger than 10 inches on a side each time you select, "Publish to a folder." This precludes the ability to distribute large fine art photographs. However, most of us want graphics for display and illustration only, so having large files downsized is just fine.
You can import any of your iPhoto files into iWeb and leave them as they are or modify them in iWeb before publishing. You can also modify the original photograph (or a copy which is recommended) in iPhoto or other photo graphics program (think PhotoShop) and then bring that photo into iWeb. I prefer to process before importing.
Within iWeb, a key question to answer is, "Do I want folks to download my photos?" This point gets a little confusing for many, as any photo can be "dragged & dropped" onto a desktop. In iWeb the question is more specific. Placing your photos on a "Photo" theme page gives you the ability to select if people can download and at what quality. In iWeb see: Inspector / Photos / Photos / Photo Download Size.
You may already know this, but generally speaking, photographs for the web appear better if uploaded as JPEGs / 72 dpi / sRGB color space / and not larger than 300 KB. Plus in iWeb's case, not longer than 10 inches on the longest side. These may not be the best settings for printing, but they are for web display. Some folks will differ and that's okay, this isn't written in stone.
Sorry this has been so long, but I hope it illuminates your question. - Fabe

  • Rollovers Only Work Sometimes

In iWeb 2.0.3, I'm creating text boxes in which the text (a word or two each) is a link with the rollover enabled--the text is in black normally, and in red when the mouse rolls over it.
The rollovers work perfectly in iWeb itself, but when published,
many of them lose the rollover effect. The links still work, but
the words remain black when the mouse rolls over them.
The failure is inconsistent: some of the rollovers continue to work
fine after publishing, but lots of them don't.
All the text boxes--the ones that work and the ones that fail--contain
type that's been rendered by iWeb into graphics,
    because they're non-standard fonts.
Any clues why this is happening?
    Thanks.
    --DP

Sadly, neither adjusting the "visited" color nor clearing the browser's cache
makes a difference. I'm checking all the settings to see if I can see a difference between the links that display the rollover properly and those that don't, but I haven't found anything yet.
I thought it might have to do with the size of the type, or the horizontal or vertical centering within the type box, or perhaps the number of links on a page,
but playing with those things doesn't cause the failure.
I think it's going to be one of those iWeb things where some elements just stop behaving properly, and the only way to correct it is to delete and re-create them. I've run into problems like that before.
    Thanks for your replies.

  • Why the images have missed their frame stroke, once online?

I am working on my new website on iweb 09, and published a test, it looks very nice.
The only thing I don´t understand is why the images have missed their frame stroke, once online.
    What´s wrong, any idea?
    On iWeb, Inspector/Graphic/Stroke/Picture Frame

It appears that the Scrips folder for you site has not been uploaded or not uploaded fully. There are two files, iWebImage.js and iWebSite.js. Try the following:
1 - do a File->Publish Entire Site and see if the site works as intended. You may have to do a refresh on the pages a couple of times.
2 - next, in needed, publish your site to a folder on your hard drive. Mount your iDisk and go to the iDisk/Web/Sites/arkimo folder. Drag the two files above from the Scripts folder on your computer into the Scripts folder on the iDisk Then try the site again.
Part of the problem is the server, some files not loading the first time, and part is the missing js files in the Scripts folder.

  • Trouble opening website via Internet Explorer on PC

Hi there, I have recently published two websites with iWeb, both of which open and run superbly in Safari on the Mac but when you try and open them on Internet Explorer on a PC only the top of the page will download and the rest of the site is invisible. Does anyone know why this is? I am using iWeb version 1.1.2 and have created both sites on my iMac which is running OS X 10.4.9 if this helps?
I hope someone out there can help? I can give you the website addresses if you need further info?

Due to my customer's most common setup I had to address these IE6 issues as well. Some background may illustrate the problems. Not only has IE6 difficulties with .png, but as well for example with lists (in case you use them, they are an undocumented feature of iWeb and somehat buggy), and more. To solve some of the .png issues iWeb spends some code utilizing "Active Script". That drives IE6 to render the page almost completely, and then the script will fix some of the ugly behavior. You can check that by your elements to navigate on top of your pages (these unfortunatley become .png) within IE6, or with the buttons to start a slideshow.
What I found on your first page: Move the cursor over it, it turns to be a senstive area to start the user's mail program to send a mail to info@... - try to remove that first.
Even more, there are a lot of setups of IE6 where "Active Script" is forbidden (in banks, insurances companies etc.). Ever tried to force a large organizition to migrate to IE7? Or to allow Active Script, let's say for 30.000 users? You'll get the impact...
So here is what I did to obtain some compatibility with IE6:
    Installed IE6 on Paralles.
    Switched "Active Script" to "Never".
Now you can check what is going on
    In my pages:
Reengineered every element to navigate manually - no iWeb automatism, switched them all to off with iWeb's inspector
Reconstructed every picture to the size they should be /outside/ of iWeb, using Graphics Converter
Removed every frame from all text elements in iWeb
Switched to web and windows compatible fonts (e.g. Courier to Courier New)
Checked every page to contain plain text instead of graphic - click into the rendered page and try to drag: Does the the whole block move? Then you are on the wrong way
Removed every formatting attribute from the text: Alignment, Highth etc.
The only element I couldn't cover is the button for the slideshow - but I've read somewhere else that you can define an object and associate that with a link directly to the script on your server which iWeb puts there. But of course that does not help in case where your favorite visitors are cut off from using Active Script completely.
    Good Luck!

I should probably explain how to use Application
icons in iWeb as graphics as well in case someone
checking this thread later doesn't know.
Context-click on one of the icons and do a "Get Info"
(Command-I). At the top of that window next to the
icon's name will be an image of the icon. Click on
that image to highlight it and do a "Copy"
(Command-C). Now, what we need is some application
that will allow us to pass this graphical data
thru it in order to get it saved with a unique
file name... Well, what do you know, Preview can
    handle it just fine!
Open Preview, Command-N and... you don't want to save
just yet. Click on the "Drawer" icon. Clicking that
disclosure triangle, you'll see this one icon is
really a series of images. No matter, just choose the
one named "Labeled Image 1" (or whatever the first
one is) Copy, Command-N and NOW you'll only have the
one image that you'll need (the highest quality
    one).
Save that one with a unique name and now you're ready
to drop into iWeb (or any other app) and have fun
    with it!
    Kyn and Jabberwock--
I am a little lost here. This thread began about black buttons, which caught my eye, and then it became this, which has also caught my eye! But first, what is the reason behind what Kyn is explaining how to do? In what circumstance would a person want to insert an application icon? I have come far enough to know that just because I don't see the purpose for something doesn't mean that a purpose does not exist!

I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

  • How do I add Bloglines graphic to my iWeb page

I have created a knitting blog using iWeb and .mac. Most knitters use Bloglines to follow their favorite sites. I have added RSS to the top of my blog but would also like to add Bloglines and its subscribe button.
I went to Bloglines, created an account, and went through the steps to pick an icon and generate the HTML to add to my web page. I have no clue how I'm suppose to add this code in iWeb.
I did a search of iWeb's help and it seems there are only 3 choices for adding feeds, RSS, podcast, and photocast. I just want to add Bloglines to this list.
Am I not understanding what RSS is? I thought it was different than the more specific Bloglines. Traffic to my site will be limited if I can't figure out how to hook into the knitting blogline community.
    Thanks in advance,

Instead of putting the HTML code that you get from Bloglines into your iWeb HTML files, it will be easier just to import the button graphics into iWeb and then attach the appropriate hyperlinks to the buttons using the iWeb Inspector Hyperlink tab... Here are some general steps...
    1. Go to http://www.bloglines.com and log into your account.
    2. Click on the Feeds tab.
    3. Click on the "Get a Subscribe To Bloglines Button" link
    4. Decide which button you want to use and the Control-click on the button image.
    5. Select "Save Image to Desktop" from the menu that pops up.
    6. Go ahead and enter your iWeb RSS feed URL and then click "Generate HTML"
    7. On the next screen, you'll see some code that looks like this:
    8. Copy the underlined URL from your generated HTML code. This is all you will need.
    9. Now launch iWeb
    10. Drag the button graphic that you saved into your page
    11. Select the button and the open the Inspector Hyperlink tab.
    12. Check the box "Enable as hyperlink"
    13. Next to Link To:, choose "External URL"
    14. In the URL field, enter/paste in the URL from Step 8
That should be it! You can select the button graphic on the page and copy and paste it to any number of locations on your iWeb pages now. The link and everything should stay intact.
Let me know if this works out for you. Good luck!

  • Placing graphics OVER a video in iWeb?

Hi, I have a video on my iWeb site and I want to place a graphic over it to act kind of like a picture frame. The graphic I want to use has transparent parts I created in photoshop so that, when I "send to front" on iWeb, it appears OVER my video and my video can then be seen behind it. However, when I publish my project and visit my site, the video always appears over the graphic frame I created. Is there a way to make the graphic act as an overlay through html or something?
    Thanks!

Thanks, everyone! I tried placing the video in a text box. Do I then also place the frame in that same text box? If so, should it then be able to fit over the video? I feel like I must be doing something wrong.
If I try the other technique of placing the image in the video, is there an easy way to do that in iMovie? I don't have Final Cut.
