IWeb saving in iDisk

I've been trying to add specific links on my website by changing the HTML text in the iDisk HTML file copy. I then "Save" after changes. When I double click on the newly saved file, it opens in a web browser (Safari) as I want it to look. However, the changes don't show up when I actually open the website.
1. I've deleted my iDisk copy and then published to .Mac. New version does not show up on iDisk.
2. After publishing, when I open my website, it has new version however (I need to find new version so I can change HTML text).
Where are the actual HTML files located that are seen on my website?
I'm new to this so detail is good. Thanks

I'll try and anwswer your questions as best as I can. Your questions are in bold type.
Why can't the specific links be done in iWeb itself? Please be more (no pun intended) specific.
A: This is not so much a link as html code with a link. Twitter to be specific. I've read suggestions from other posts and some websites suggesting I change the .HTML file in iDisk>Web>Sites>iWeb>Sitename using TextEdit.
Are you making the changes post publishing in iDisk? (copying the file from idisk, saving on desktop, making html changes, saving and replacing file with same name back into iDisk?
A: I've never copied iDisk file to desktop, changed, saved and replaced. I'll try that next. Here's my process: 1. I include a placeholder in iWeb where I want Twitter. Then I "Save" & "Publish to .Mac". 2. I go to iDisk>Web>Sites>iWeb>Sitename, open the page with TextEdit where Twitter place holder is, paste the html code from Twitter site and "Save". At this point I assume the newly saved .html file will be reflected on my website, not so.
Each time an iWeb site is re-published (updated) to dotMac, it replaces the "older" iWeb site and any changes to html files are also replaced with the updated iWeb.
I change the html code after each time I re-publish, hoping it will work, it never has.
Maybe my process order is not correct. I'll try your suggestion with the copy to desktop... and the link too.

  • Can Time Machine backup files saved on iDisk?

I keep all of my important files on my iDisk. I upgraded to Leopard and would like to use the benefits of Time Machine to protect those important files, bit don't see a way to include iDisk folders with Time Machine.

As an added note to my last post...
When you choose/start the "iDisk Sync" option via the .Mac Pref panel a .sparsebundle disk image will be located in ~/Library/FileSync/[machines-MAC-address]/[your-account-name]_iDisk.sparsebundl e
This .sparsebundle file be equal to the size of your iDisk space use and not its limiting size of say 10GB.
TM will backup this .sparsebundle file for you and thus you can use TM for saving your iDisk as you wanted. Note it save the sparsebundle disk image and you cannot see the history of individual files changes using the TM browser as you can with other files on your Mac.
    I hope this helps.

  • Iweb files on idisk

How do I make sure my iWeb site is saved on my computer rather than on idisk?  It is hosted by go daddy.

If you are publishing your website to GoDaddy thenb the only item that you need to be concerned with is one named Domain.sites and that file is located in your your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.
That file contains all of the items used to create and publish your website.  You should keep a cuurent backup of that file on an external volume, i.e. external HD, CD or flash drive at all times.

  • How can I reopen an index.html saved to iDisk?

    Hi there,
I created a personal site on a Powerbook laptop in iWeb a year or so ago and published it through my .mac account. It was great and I updated it on a fairly regular basis. Then my existing laptop died of old aged and I replaced it with a new MacBook Pro. I have located the original index.html in the appropriate "Sites" folder under the iDisk icon on my "new" desktop but it won't reopen the files in iWeb. (I'm just dragging and dropping it onto the iWeb icon.) Am I doing something wrong or can a web site created in iWeb only be changed on the Mac that first created it? I'm guessing (and hoping) that this isn't the case but I'm at a loss as to what to do. Please help.
    Regards,
    Ian David

Ian ~ Welcome to the discussions. A web site created in iWeb can be changed on a Mac other than the one which first created it. But only iWeb's Domain file can be opened in iWeb. See this Apple doc on How to back up MobileMe data. It says:
Any websites you have published with iWeb should still be available within iWeb. iWeb stores everything in a Domain file, normally located in the ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder (although it can be moved). If you no longer have this file, you can view your currently published pages and manually recreate them within iWeb, but there is no way to import published pages back into iWeb. You can manually back up the Domain file, or use Backup to back it up.
Paragraph 2.3 of this FAQ page gives some tips on how to use published files, graphics, photos, etc., to help rebuild the site from scratch:

  • Page shows in iweb, shows on idisk, but doesn't show on page?

I just spent an hour talking with mobile me folks then about 30 minutes talking to a nice fellow with apple care to help with iweb.
I have a movies tab on my web page where I have a lot of family movies. When I create these pages, I'll have a movie highlighted in the iweb app, click "add page" at the bottom, select movie, and it shows up in the drop down list of movies. (The guy on the call said he didn't know how to access drop down menus as he didn't have them on his version. That was weird to me.) This movie will publish, show as blue, will show in idisk, I can "visit" using idisk and it looks like my web page, but it will not show to other users if they go straight to my website (or me either).
But, then I tried dragging the actual movie to the "movies" tab inside of the iweb app instead of first creating a page...this time it published.
I tried some test pages with my old way of making movies (since this was post snow leopard I thought it may be related), and that worked. But if I took my blank page and added this one movie (a movie i renamed to see if that was it), it "hid" the page to the user even though it was on idisk. The only way to publish it is to drag the file to the "movies" view, if that makes sense.
Just wondering if anyone knew about why this would happen. Also sharing my experience to help others avoid it if it comes up.

never understood what happened but the pages eventually updated correctly

  • Unpublish iWeb site in iDisk

    Hi
I can see a number of old threads here regarding removing a site through iDisk and I have folowed these but still have a folder remaining (with content) that I cannot remove.
I have navivated to the iWeb/Sites folder but whenever I try to deleye the folder named _gallery I get a message saying I do not have the permissions to access some of the items
Can anyone help me to work my way round this please
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Ha
Thanks for the responses - I think I have it now.
It was not iPhoto - but Aperture, where I had previously published some photo galleries. I had already removed the galleries in Aperture but for some reason one of them still remained in the MobileMe gallery. I was able to delete this in MobileMe directly and the files in iDisk have now gone.
    Thanks for your help

  • Restoring old iweb site from idisk

THrough sheer ignorance, I created a "new Site" in iweb, not realizing it would replace my exiting website, which is far more important. I want to restore my old site. I am able to access the old site through idisk, but have no idea how to relink it so that it reappears as my website. (Someone suggested opening the index.html in plain text editor and correcting the URL, but I have no idea how to do that. Tried opening it in "text Edit" and no URL is there)
Appreciate any help!!!! This is killing me!

TextEdit is what is says - it is an html editor so that you use it to edit html code, so not url will show up as it does in Safari etc. Safari is a browser and TextEdit does what it says on the tin - edits html code.
The easiest way is to go back into iWeb and open your domain file with the site on it and re-publish all of that site and it will be back at the top again. That is assuming that you have the relevant domain fiel and have not deleted it?
If you publish another site in iWeb, assuming that they have different names, they will not cancel each other out, but what will happen is that the second published site will be at the top, so all you need do is re-publish your original site from iWeb and it will be back at the top again.
You can always get to all your iWeb sites via the url http://web.me.com/username/sitename so Site1, Site2 etc.

  • Restoring iweb site from idisk

My hard drive from a Mac with OS 10.4.11 recently died a painful death and was unrecoverable. My files were unfortunately not backed up as they should have been (lesson learned). I have a new Mac and am trying to be able to access my iweb site without having to start over again. All of the files are accessible via idisk, but is there a way to restore them so that I can actually make edits in iweb?
    thanks!

  • Deleting iWeb Elements from iDisk

I'm sure this question has been posted before; but I couldn't find the answer. Excuse me if I'm being redundant.
I know that when I delete a photo or other element from a page created with iWeb, it will no longer appear on the displayed page ... but will the file be deleted from my iDisk as well? I guess I'm being overly organized perhaps; but I would just like my iDisk to only contain what is actually needed for the website I create. (Also, unneeded files could result in a potential space problem eventually.
I appreciate an answer from anyone who can shed light on my question. Thanks.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

There are some redundant files like duplicate copies of images and the like that iWeb publishes to your iDisk, but I think this is inherent in the design and html code generation of iWeb and I would not suggest delete files from your iDisk manually that appear to be duplicates to you. In any case, if ever any images are not necessary anymore (like if you delete a page from within iWeb), then iWeb will delete those images automatically from you iDisk.
But every once in a while iWeb messes things up with the files on your iDisk and either keeps extra old files around or doesn't put up new ones for some reason. This causes strange effects like messed up rollovers, phantom images, etc. In this case, a "Publish All to .Mac" usually fixes things....it's like spring cleaning.

  • Moving iWeb to my iDisk so I can access it from two different machines

    Hi,
Wondering if anyone has any experience in updating iWeb from more than one Mac?
I've just migrated from my old MacBook (running Tiger) to my new MacBook Air (running Snow Leopard). The migration has of course brought over all my iWeb files as well. As my MacBook Air is for travelling, I would ideally like to leave most of the the management of my iWeb sites to my old compouter which will stay at home and continue as usual. However it would be also be convenient if I could alter the iWeb sites with my Air from time to time.
I've read that all the details and files for iWeb sites are stored in the "Domain" file in /Library/Application Support/iWeb/ , however I now have two Domain files, one on each computer, and I'm terrified to change anything using the new one in case I corrupt the websites...
Could I move one of these "Domain" files to my iDisk, so the iDisk version could be the "master". That way, when I want to alter something, I could connect to the iDisk using iWeb on whichever computer I'm using (if that is possible), and alter the details there on the iDisk so there are no conflicts.
It might be an issue that my old Macbook is running iWeb'08 and Tiger, and my new one is running iWeb '09 and Snow Leopard? If this would make it impossible then I'd delete all iWeb sites from the new MacBook Air except I'm afraid that might delete the websites from the server, as both computers are linked to the same MobileMe account!
I'd be very grateful for any advice, even if it's only how to safely delete the site from the new computer.
    Thanks,
    Sarah

    sarahsmoff1 wrote:
Do you know though if it's possible as a concept to store the iWeb Domain file straight onto your iDisk and therefore modify the iDisk copy directly (as the master) every time you open iWeb on your mac?
Sarah ~ I've never tried that, but perhaps it's possible. Once you've transferred the Domain file to iDisk, double-clicking it there should open your site in iWeb. And iWeb should remember that location in future so that when you open iWeb (rather than the Domain file), it will open the Domain file that's on iDisk.
But even if that were to work, I think it's riskier than the normal case of working from the Domain file on your Mac. You'll still need to separately backup the Domain file on iDisk and, when you do a Save or Publish, iWeb will have to update the Domain file on iDisk — which will take more time than usual and perhaps cause iWeb to think there's a problem.
Perhaps others would differ, but I think it's best to have your "master" Domain file on your Mac and, after updating your site, copy the Domain to iDisk for backup. The Backup app in your Applications folder can be used to do this...
Once you've created a "Plan" in the Backup app, click on the Plan menu and choose Full Backup — which will add (rather than incrementally modify) a new copy of the Domain file to iDisk. And, as time passes, manually delete previous Domain file backups from iDisk that you no longer need. To confirm that the Backup app has copied your Domain file to iDisk, go here:
    http://www.me.com/idisk
...and click on the Backup folder in Home. To delete an unneeded backup from that folder, select the backup and then click the Trash icon.

  • IWeb claims my iDisk is full.  MobileMe says it is 8% empty.

I am trying to publish a new web site to MobileMe. In iWeb, on the new web site's Site Publishing Settings page, there is a bar graph on the bottom that is 100% full. When I try to publish the site, I get a message that there is not enough room on my iDisk.
When I go online to MobileMe and look at my Storage settings, it says that 4.3GB of 20 GB are being used.
How can I resolve this discrepancy?

That's an indication of a damaged domain file. Try the following:
    1 - close iWeb.
2 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
3 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    4 - reboot.
5 - launch iWeb and see if there's any improvement.
    If that doesn't help continue:
6 - move the domain file from your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
7 - launch iWeb, create a new test site and save.
8 - go to the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
9 - move your original domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
10 - launch iWeb and try again.

  • Backing up iWeb pages in iDisk

I recently created a web site using iWeb that accounted for 9.8 MB of storage use, according to the Inspector. After backing it up in my iDisk account and returning to iWeb, the Inspector now showed 52 MB of storage use. Why the difference? Does this mean that every time my site is downloaded, 52MB is transferred?
    Thanks

Do you mean "publishing" to your .Mac account? If not, what is it you are "backing up"? To back up an iWeb site you need to make a copy of your Domain File somewhere.

  • How to Restore iWeb Contents From iDisk?

After a format of my MBP I need to find out how to get the contents of my iWeb site back onto my Mac. Which directory does it belong to on my Mac for iWeb to recognize everything properly?

    So basically I'm screwed, right?
Unless you have a backup of your Home folder, otherwise yes
I can't copy the files from my iDisk to my Mac and have iWeb recognize them?
    No.
So when I start from scratch, will iWeb erase my current site from my iDisk?
If you give your new site a different name to the old one then NO, if you use a different name you will end up with two sites.

  • IWeb Domain in iDisk

Hello. Thank you all for yesterday's replies. Very helpful. Another problem came up, which I cannot solve so far...
I now have 2 different iweb domains for my websites with different filenames (i.e Site1 and site2). Site1 is up and running and I am able to place it on my iDisk.
However Site2 does not upload to iDisk. The arrows of iDisk Sync keep turning and turning and the file does not upload. After a while a messages pops up stating that the file for Site2 is being used elsewhere, which is not true because I have iWeb closed. Now the interesting part is, I tried to upload this same file to drop box and I managed to do it successfully and appers to be up and runing there... The question is: How can I "force" the iDisk to accpet this file?
    Thank you

Thank you for your reply. I realized no that I confused things a bit. Will try to simplify.
I want to edit my 2 sites in 2 different computers (iMac and MacBook). I have them in 2 different domains within iWeb(Chronicles.sites2 and Sligo.sites2). I want to store both iWeb domains (files with .sites2 extension) on my iDisk so that I can access them from both computers. And here lies the problem. The Sligo.sites2 file is being easily uploaded to the iDisk. I can open the file on both computers and make all the changes I want.
The file Chronicles.sites2 is not uploading to iDisk. It keeps trying but after a few minutes a message appears saying that it is not possible to upload the file because it is in use, when is not. The curious part is that when I try to store it on my DropBox, the file is transfered and works on both computers. I would like to have both on the iDisk. Any suggestion in how can I try and upload it to my iDisk?
By the way... I do not use the webhosting from MobileMe.
    Thank you

  • Iweb files in idisk?

I've been having trouble updating my iweb site directly from iWeb. I keep getting ".Mac configuration server can not be reached. Please try again later. "
I've tried all sorts of things suggested in the forum and other site. I noticed that my idisk/web/sites folder has:
    index.html
    iWeb (folder)
MyWebsite (folder) -- with all the files
    sites.rss
Can I replace the MyWebsite folder with a new version published to my desktop as a work around?
    Thanks!
