IWeb sites viewed in Explorer/Netscape -- Oh NO!

Testing my site (http://web.mac.com/magads/iWeb ) in Safari ... looks fine.
But ...
Tried it in Explorer 5.2 ... Egad! ... Everything is aligned vertically along the left edge of the page, no type is formatted, no links work ... it's a horrible joke.
Tried it in Netscape 7.1 ... Better, but ... none of the text links at page top show up, though the link areas are still hot and work fine. It's just that nobody knows they are there!
Anyone else experienced this? I looked at the sites in "Share Your Site" using Netscape 7.1, and they were all just as described above.
Doesn't Apple test in other browsers, or are they getting a bit like Microsoft was/is with Explorer? Gosh, I hope not.

Trying to view a website in IE 5.2 is like trying to view high definition television on a black and white.
5.2 has some issues that probably COULD be resolved if the developer took the time to make those updates but the developer is Microsoft and they have tossed 5.2 into the trash (and anyone using it should, too).
Anyone viewing the web with IE 5.2 on the Mac has problems with other sites as well, so it won't be blamed on the page. As time goes on, this should become more and more of a non-issue.

  • IWeb sites in internet explorer

I have created a site for our company that can be viewed at www.ourlandscapers.com. On Safari & Firefox, it looks fine, but on Internet explorer (which 99% of our clients use), it looks like a big mess, with overwriting, field boxes, red x's everywhere, etc.
I don't know what I need to do to get it to publish correctly in Internet Explorer as it does in Safari, etc.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I noticed you used some none web safe fonts, Handwriting-Dakota for one. That won't play well with IE which is considered antiquated as far as browsers (but used by more people than any other )
Make sure you're using web safe fonts:
    Web Safe Fonts
Common fonts to all versions of Windows & Mac equivalents
    Safe web fonts
If you're using a non web safe font in other than an html link, you can add adrop shadow to it with the Font window and set the opacity to zero and the text will be converted into an image file that will look the same in all browsers. It may take a little longer to load than text but it will look good.
Others will be in to suggest other things you can do. It will not be easy to dumb down the site for IE browsers but you can get fairly close. IE 7, I believe, does play better with iWeb than earlier versions. You can also put a note on the site that it's best viewed with Safari for Windows or Firefox. Can't hurt to nudge them into the 21st century as far as browsers are concerned.

  • IWeb 08 site problem viewing in Explorer on PC

Hi guys, anyone out there please whose able to advise this old geezer who's just created his first ever web site using iWeb 08?
I've created my site on my Intel 24inch iMac, and using one of the templates iWeb gave me. It's a simple site. I saved it to a folder on my iMac so that I could test it. All works well viewing it in Safari on the Mac.
However, when I try to view it using Explorer under VISTA (as I assume most people visiting my site once it's published WILL do) I have problems. Although the site opens fine, the navigation 'headings' which are used by the reader to work their way through the various pages, are hidden at the top of the screen behind Explorer's menu bars. So, although they can see my Home Page, they can navigate nowhere further.
What am I doing wrong? I'm getting balder by the minute trying to work it out! (lol)
Please email me at [email protected] ?
    Regards, Dave

Hey there bud! iWeb '08 and internet explorer work together kinda funny. iWeb is awesome in other browsers it seems. Here are some fixes that I learned of. Im no expert, so I'm not sure why you must go this route- but I have done a few sites and these rules worked for me:
    1) Make sure all lines, (even those around boxes & picture frames) are greater than 1pt. I use 1.25.
    2) Try not to overlap the boxes. On some sites I created this made IE lock up.
    3) Stray away from transparent boxes. Only one of my sites worked well with them.
    4) Stray away from shadows if at all possible. Your page will load faster.
    5) Stray away from lines, your page will load faster if you just use boxes.
Once again, I am no expert, but this is the advice that I found and tried when I had the same problem. Good Luck!

  • Viewing iWeb site in OS9 browser - anyone done it successfully?

Hi folks - I made an iWeb site yesterday and although it looks great on my OS X system under Firefox and Safari, my husband running OS 9.2.1 on a G4/733 cannot view the site successfully at all.
In IE 5.0 it loaded up OK but the menu links at the top of the home page didn't work, in Netscape (7, I think) the layout is all over the place, iCab 3 loads the layout OK, the menu links work, but it only briefly flashes the placed images up and then they vanish again. Has anyone managed to view an iWeb site OK using an OS9 browser? Any ideas what the problem is?
    Thanks a lot!
    Deb.
    G4 DP 867 MDD, PB G3/333   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for your message Antonio. I did upgrade the version of IE to 5.1.7 but unfortunately the problem with th rollover links still remains. I am using the 'Formal' template and it's the small rollovers generated at the top of each page that don't work under that browser in OS9. I have got around the problem by manually including a second set of hyperlinks lower down on each page, to duplicate the rollovers, but this is a bit of a pain of course. Oh well, may just have to work on my DH to upgrade to OS X!
    Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Problem viewing videos on my iweb site - Macs only

    Hello,
I recently uploaded some .movs (Quicktimes) to my iweb site. They were exported from Final Cut Pro using Compressor, using the Quicktime streaming option, size 320x240. When I publish, anyone using a PC (presumably Firefox) can click the play button on the quicktime and watch it. However, when viewing the page on a Mac (tested on a few different systems) you can't click the play button, you can't even scrub through the video. On a laptop you can ctrl+click and it will play, but I can't get it to work on a desktop (either with ctrl+click or right click). The website was published on a computer with Tiger, and iLife '04.
In case it's important, I've had success publishing videos on sites made with iLife '04 but with the Leopard operating system (on a different computer), but I'm thinking this shouldn't be a problem.
Anyone heard of this problem or have any solutions for me?

Update: just discovered that it has nothing to do with desktops and laptops, but in Safari you can right click the play button and it will play. In Firefox on a Mac, there is no way to get it to play. In Firefox in a PC, however, you can just click it normally to play.

  • Viewing Published iWeb site

    Hey there,
I have published my iWeb site to mobile me. and I can see it in my safari browser. However I was told by friends and family that they could not view it. :/
So I tried it on a friends MacBook and sure enough it couldn't be reached.
Any Ideas on how to fix this? I don't even know what is wrong...
    Thanks

Ben ~ Welcome to the discussions. If you don't mind giving out your site's URL, perhaps someone here can help. If not, MobileMe live chat support is now 24/7 — see this announcement. Other Apple support options are here.

  • Is it possible to view an iWeb site locally in a browser without an internet connection?

I am trying to find out if an iWeb site could be viewed in a local computer kiosk environment.  I know that you can export your files, but are iWeb site files "self-supporting" in a browseer or do they require a connection to the internet to be viewed properly?

iWeb is an application to create simp,e straitforward webpages with.
The pages are published to a folder called a  site.
Every page is selfcontained, with the exception of the photoalbums, which need a few files from the Apple Server.
In general pages are best served thru a webserver, but the pages can also be opened as a file on the desktop and they will display properly.
You can easily verify it by looking at webpages and see what files they use.
Here are some sites where you can see the file/folder structure :
         http://www.wuala.com/Maaskant
         http://www.wuala.com/Cafenoir
         http://www.wuala.com/Stellar
To see the webpages click on the index.html file.
BTW, Wuala is an alternative to DropBox. Safer too. No Government agents have acces to private files.
    Wuala protects your privacy.
All files are directly encrypted on your desktop. Your password never leaves your computer. Not even we as the provider can access your files or your password.

  • How can people viewing my iWeb site print a whole slideshow?

I have several pages of photos and captions on my iWeb site. Many of these are slideshows which are guides to repairing / modifying cars for enthusiasts. The page shows the operations in easy stages.
People who use these want to print off all the photos and captions to take to the car so that they can follow the guide.
Is there a way of allowing them to print the whole slide show with one click. They don't want to select each photo and print it in turn. There are up to 40 photos on some pages.
Users will be using many different computers and browsers.

There is no built in way they could do that but you could assemble all of the photos used in a slideshow, and create a PDF file with each photo as a page. Then put a text link to the pdf file and publish. The file will be upload when the site is published and be available for download when the link is clicked on.
One way to create the pdf file is to use Combine PDFs which will take pdf files or image files and create a single document from them.
Another way you could present them would be to create an iPhoto book of the photos along with the necessary text. Then do a Print to PDF of the book while in iPhoto and you'll end up with a PDF file of the book that you can link to.
This test page has a pdf file that has been linked. It's located in the lower right of the page.

  • Working with an iWeb site in Design view CS5

I brought in an iWeb site to Dreamweaver CS5 using the mange sites panel successfully with all assets.  The site is perfect in Live Mode but is not workable in Design Mode.  I have also FTP it to Business Catalyst and can see it in their design mode better than in Dreamweaver.  Any assistance that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

iWeb and other so called WYSIWYG web authoring systems typically use poor code and bad layout practices which will cause experienced web developers and DW to puke.
The only thing I can suggest is to validate your code & fix reported errors or re-build the site with DW.

  • Dead links in iWeb site - IE only

I have just published my first iWeb site: www.envisioningchange.ca
All seems to work great in Safari and Firefox (though plug-in for social media sharing "Add This" is down right now), however many of the links, some of them in the text (not just nav links) are dead when viewed in Internet Explorer. I have searched for a solution to this on various forums and have not found anything specific to this issue.
    Anybody able to help?
    Many thanks!

    Hi Roddy
Thanks so much for the replies and the super informative links! Unfortunately, following the instructions to insert drop shadows before putting images into iWeb resulted in a slightly different appearance and alignment to the image...one I'm not totally pleased with. If it's the only thing that works, I may go that route. The thing is, each page seems to behave differently, so I am unconvinced that this is the problem, since each page has an image with drop shadow, but some have active links and others do not.
I would rather not watermark the images for a few reasons. I'm actually rather pleased with the transparent overlay to prevent right-click downloading.
I checked the site on IE this morning and did not see any of the text mis-alignment you mentioned. Any chance you could send a screenshot?
Problem continues to be a mix of link issues, including seemingly randlom links that are completely dead (both external and internal links), some with only half the link active (need to move mouse over the whole text to find an active part).
One thing I did notice this morning is that as the home page was loading the image, the split second before the image was up, the links were active. As soon as the image was up, the links were dead. And this was after I removed the drop shadow on that page!
Any further thoughts would be most welcome!

  • IWeb sites are slow to upload. text columns turn to heavy png files

    Hi!
Yes I've noticed that iweb sites for some odd reason are slower to load on any browser. No matter what the hosting is. I use Me.com for a few years and iWeb as I don't have the time or patience to bother with Dreamweaver. I use Me.com for hosting as well as another web hosting server. If there is graphic material on the page, it takes so long to open. Apple must do something about it for sure.
The program iWeb itself doesn't open up fast enough if you have more than 3 pages on it (which any normal site would have). I'm glad Apple made good changes in iWeb09, but it needs to do something about the speed of the program, the sites it makes and how it processes simple matter on it.
Even though, I have come across some good examples of iWeb made sites that are easy and relatively faster to open or they open at a normal speed. The authors also have used flash material on their iWeb sites. I have a non-registered program (web site Maestro) that claims to ease up and streamline the graphic and other heavy content on a iWeb site to make it lighter with loading.
But the unregistered version works on 70 percent files only. And I don't really notice any difference with it either. So I'm doubtful of buying the full version.
Any thoughts? Solutions? Would really appreciate.
ANOTHER ISSUE that I have discovered while making iWeb site is that a text column put on a shape after publishing turns into a heavy PNG picture file that can weight almost upto 1 whole megabyte!!!
And you keep wondering why the darn page is so slow to open!!! Cuz a simple text could've been just about 50kb. But it turns into a 900kb picture in png!!! Is there a way to change this?? I guess, taking out the picture from the published site folder and reediting it in - say - Photoshop reducing its size may help. But its so cumbersome and arduous to go into every darn folder and open all the text now converted into pics and re-edit them!! And then their reduced quality will make the text look feeble and bad quality too.
This is a problem that APPLE iWEB experts Must work on. iWeb gives a certain flexibility as its like a free flowing canvas. But then its also a known fact that iWeb sites are exceptionally heavier to open, unless you know many other tweaks here and there to make it work right. But again, this is contrary to the purpose of iWeb, cuz its made for amateur site makers.
I wish there is a work around this thing really.
ANY SUGGESTIONS FRIENDS?? WOULD LOVE TO HEAR. PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS AND SOLUTIONS.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Nitesh

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Shapes by their very nature are graphic elements that end up a png file whether there's text in them or not. You should try adding the text in a text box above the shape and see if there's any difference. Just be sure to use a Web Safe Font and not add any enhancements that will turn it into a image file:
You may not notice a difference with loading with WSM but those with Internet Explorer should. Have you tested your site with and without WSM on a PC?
In WSM you can set the amount of optimizing for graphics. I've set it at about 60% (moderate) and haven't tested other settings for image quality. I'm sure a lower quality level, i.e. more compression, will have a impact on file loading. I just don't have a feel for the greatest amount of compression that will still have acceptable image quality. You'll just have to experiment.
If your site is a commercial site then using a commercial hosting server is the best option. Also, it's reported that using a Text Based Navbar instead of iWeb's java based one will help dark side compatibility.
Be sure to put in feature requests for the improvements that you see necessary to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iweb.html.

  • IWeb 08 and Internet Explorer ...failing to write text to screen correctly?

I have a site created using iWeb08. It works well on old and new firefox but on IE I see inconsistent behaviour on different almost identical screen.
Viewing the site on Firfoy or Safaris gives 1:1 what is on the screen on iWeb.
On Internest explorer ...some but not all pages fail to display the text correctly, basically the text on my menu gets wrapped almost like IE thinks there is not enough space in each text box to dsiplay it. I have my own menu system, I have carefully chosen a portable font but in most and minimised as far as possible the number of objects on the screen. What is weird is that 70% of the pages on the site look good on IE, but 2 pages with almost identical layout can be comnpletely different in the display.
    1) has anyone else seen this? and cured it
    2) does anyone know why in the iWeb generated css files there is a css file for IE but this is never referenced in the html or js code? in fact the call to it is commented out.
Please dont tell me to tell my viewers to use Firefox, the real world is that we have to support the user not the other way round....
    Thanks

Hi thanks for the advice, the text is centred vertically , left aligned and there is plenty of space at the end. I will try increasing width/height but not sure if that will help as box is already much bigger than text.
In fact it works perfectly on another web page ...thats what surprising ....even the html for the two pages is identical from what we can see!
    Take a look at
www.cibsys.com/cibsys1/index.html on the UK site and run down the various pages on the left side to see what happens (if you have IE on a PC). On the PC on some pages perhaps 30% eg workflow services the menu on the left fails to draw correctly leaving the text un readable.
    Thanks

  • How do i add a personal domain to my iWeb site?

I created a website using iWeb and logged on to mobile me to activate the personal domain I bought. It's asking me to:
    Add Personal Domain
Before your iWeb site can be viewed at your personal domain, you must complete the following steps:
Go to your registrar's website. Define web.me.com as the "www" CNAME (alias) for your domain.
If you need help creating a CNAME, contact your registrar.
Return to this page and click Done.
Your registrar can take up to 48 hours to update your domain.
Can someone explain where or who my registrat is? I bought my domain through GoDaddy.com. Are they my registrar?
    Thanks,

  • How can I display the folders in an ftp site in Windows Explorer during a Firefox web browsing session?

I would like to view and select multiple files from a folder on an ftp site and copy them to a folder on my computer, but with Firefox it seems I have to plod through one file at a time. In IE there is a Page button which has an option to display the site in Windows Explorer, which allows me to select and copy as many files as I want at one time.
Does such a feature exist in Firefox, or an approximation?
    Thank you

That is done via an onbeforeunload or onunload event that displays a JavaScript alert.

i have been exporting lightroom web galleries to my iweb site without any problem.  Suddenly I get the error message "finder can't complete the operation because some data can't be read or written" - error code -36 - and the move to the sites folder on my idisk fails..... thoughts?

Try this community: MobileMe on my Mac: MobileMe: Apple Support Communities.
And you can continue to use iWeb for some time to come. The following will explain:
It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.
