IWeb slow publish

I'm curious about why iWeb publishes certain sites so slowly while others publish at a reasonable rate.
I ran across an article in this forum about a program called iWebSites that separates the different files and allows you to work with one at a time and save them as different sites rather than as divisions of the same file, which seems like it could speed up the process and help some of my iWeb lag issues. Does anyone know whether it's still usable with all the upgrades?
Also, I don't see any real answers to why iWeb seems to publish slowly since the Lion upgrade (honestly I don't know whether it's Lion or my interface with 1&1, my hosting site) and most of the more complete answers are from long ago. I was wondering whether there are ways to make it publish more quickly that I might not be aware of since I'm not very experienced (but am working to learn).
Thanks for any help!

What version of iWeb are you using?  If you're using iWeb 3 then you only publish one website at a time so iWebSites is not needed. iWeb 2  publishes all the websites in the same domain file each time any site is published.
The sites that load more slowly: do then have more photos, movies and/or music files on their pages?
Users have reported the iWebSites does work with Lion.  Also, in Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
tell application "iWeb" to activate
Or you can download an already compiiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.

  • IWeb wont publish updated pages to site using Mobileme

Tried to publish 2 updated pages to my current iWeb site published on Mobileme. Am directed through a Facebook username and password login. (Don't remember this step from prior publishing.) Then nothing happens. No site update. No option to publish site available within iWeb. And no way I see to save my changes made in iWeb before I exit the program to try to figure out. I have lost work twice. What is happening and how do I correct the trouble?

You must have checked the box next to "Update my Facebook profile when I publish this site."
Click the site name at the top of the left column in iWeb to get to the Publishing Settings page to change this.

  • Using a site in iWeb to publish to an external server - problems with RSS

    Hi!
I have a rather odd problem. I have a .Mac account, but I also work for a non-profit organization that has asked me to handle their website. I would like to use iWeb to do that and am attempting to publish the site to an external server. However, I also want to use iWeb to publish my own personal account pages to .Mac.
I have the site up and running, and most everything works on it except the RSS feed. I typed the url into the Publish to Server dialogue, but it has been to no avail. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that I am not publishing ALL of my sites to this server, just one of the sites. (When I invoke the Publish to Server command, it creates a master index and folders for each of the sites. Then, I have been discarding all of them except for the folder of the site I want to publish, which I have to name "public_html" to conform with our domain provider's requirements. This works great, except the RSS feed is broken when I do this.
I know I can use a seperate log-in account and re-make the entire webpage there, but I consider that to be a last resort and I am looking for a better method than this.
Any suggestions? The site is http://www.oatag.org

When you break the site structure by changing names of folders you also break the link for the RSS feed.
I find it hard to believe you are really required to change the name of the folder like that. Instead you should be inserting into the folder called public_html the following two things: the folder published by iWeb which has the same name as your site does inside iWeb, plus the index html file published alongside it. To make sure that this index.html file actually points to the site you are uploading, make sure this site is at the top of the list inside iWeb before publishing.

  • Using iWeb to publish to two sites separately

Here's my situation: I purchased a Family Pack .mac so I get 5 sites. I will use one for my own use, my wife will use one, and my son will use one.
We would like to use one of the two remaining accounts primarily to put up a website for a friend of ours who is working as a missionary in Africa.
So on my wife's computer, we want to use iWeb to build two sites, publish one in one .mac account and publish the other in another .mac account.
So far iWeb keeps publishing them in the same account.
    Any ideas?

The easiest thing for you to do would be to create a separate account on your wife's computer for this additional .Mac account that you wish to publish to. You can add this System account under System Preferences>Accounts. Then log into this account and add the additional .Mac information into the System Preferences there. Launch iWeb and create your page. When you publish, it will be published using the extra .Mac account.
This way...no juggling of Domain files. No switching back and forth of .Mac account information. Just log into the separate account to edit and publish this separate website on this .Mac account. Then your wife can log back into her own account to edit her own websites. Easy.

  • IWeb not publishing website via FTP after adding music

    Hi all,
When I drag a piece of music on my iWeb website and try to publish via FTP, I get the "there was an error communicating with FTP server" message. Any ideas? Yes this is my own copyrighted music, not other people's music.

Try publishing to a local folder and launch the site in your browser by double clicking the index.html file.
This will tell you if the problem is in iWeb or publishing. See...

  • IWeb not publishing movies

Hey there. I'm new to these forums, so go easy on me. I searched the forums for this topic and didn't find anything related to my problem. Recently, I started using iWeb to build a site, and I had a huge problem, and that problem is that iWeb only publishes some of my movies. Now, the format I've been using is the Apple TV settings in Final Cut Express. I realize that iWeb likes small files for uploading. But, with the formats and files sizes being about the same (150-200 megs) why is this happening? Initially, what I did was delete the movies page, create a new one, and sometimes this would work, but not all the time. That, I think is what is most frustrating - The fact that there is this randomness in troubleshooting. I've brought up the overlay and examined my assets in relation to each other, but I can't see any conflict there. I really don't want to export from Final Cut or Quicktime in a web format, as there is a such a huge loss in quality, obviously. Does anyone know of a workaround to keep these movies in a higher quality and have them be compatible with iWeb. By the way, my iDisk is empty, so that's not the issue either. Thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to the discussions. You could try importing your movies into iMovie and then publishing to MobileMe Gallery:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/#mobileme
Then you can pseudo embed your Gallery movie into your iWeb site — here's a video tutorial briefly showing that about half-way through:
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/web/iweb08.html#tutorial=livecontent
...Visitors will have a full-screen option to view your movies and an advantage for you is that the movies are no longer in iWeb's Domain file — so site re-publishing times are shorter. There's more about MobileMe Gallery here:

  • IWEB not publishing - and never has

I tried to use iWEB to publish, after asing for my password (and validating) it just goes into dialog ... "loging into .Mac" ... stays there forever and refuses to go on. I was able to log-in to my iDisk and manually create a folder called WEB (none existed before), I then put a folder in it called Sites and then drug a test page to the sites forlder in another folder called test.
    I can use: web.mac.com/theimage1/test/
and it works fine I see the page.
When I then try to get iWEB to publish, it just goes to the log into dialog again and nothing happens. It brings up my .Mac log-in page and I do put in my password and it indictes the password is VALID. I have even have tried with my iDisk mounted locally ... iWEB just fails to publish in the publish step.

Such as what type of Internet connection are you using (DSL, Cable, Analog Modem)? Is the connection wired (Ethernet cable) or wireless (AirPort)? In what general geographic location on the globe are you located? Does you ISP (Internet Service Provider) require you to set certain attributes such as MTU (Maximum Transmission Units) to a specific value?
Ok, I am on a cable modem from Roadrunner. It goes to a dLink router with nothing being blocked. The G5 is wired to the network (no airport), the address is manually set not DHCP (and it works on everything else thus far and has for over a year). Safari, Firefox, Fetch ftp, Guru ftp, checking & banking accounts, stock accounts, etc. I am in the Charlotte NC area.
I run my own WEB site external to .Mac and the ftp software and GoLive work fine through the system. The sytems preferneces>.Mac work fine in connecting to my iDisk. Name and password are "valid" according to the Dialog box. I don't use iSync so can't check that. But, log-in and iDisk both work.
I have let the "logging-in to .Mac" dialog run overnight with no result ... I think that's long enough! If I just mouse click on the Log-in dialog box it disappears, not even hit the cancel button.
I don't think it's a network problem. Unless iWEB uses something totally outside the ordinary. All other communications even multi-person iChat Video works well.

  • IWeb Stopped Publishing

*IWeb stopped publishing. Recently, when I clicked on the "publish" button while in IWeb, I never got a notification of the new publication and the "publish" button was not lit up anymore. Then, more recently, I noticed all of the icons for my sites which, have been published are in "red" instead of "blue." And when I click on the "publish" button I get a pop up window telling me an error occurred during the publishing process and to "please try again later." Thanks for your help!*

I found the answer to this problem on MobleMe. There was a announcement about maintenance as follows: Maintenance - 6/30/2009, 22:00-23:30 PT
*"Due to scheduled maintenance, MobileMe members may be intermittently unable to access the www.me.com web apps. Normal service is expected to be restored at the end of the maintenance window. We apologize for any inconvenience."*

  • Can I still create new sites in iweb and publish them to mobile me?

Can I still create new sites in iweb and publish them to mobile me? Also Can the sites not contain movies or photos, or just not a full gallery?

You can have as many sites and domain names on a single MMe account. However, only one site can use the CNAME domain name forwarding while the others must use URL forwarding.
Multiple Sites with Domain Name(s) in a Single MobileMe Account
Here's how to have multiple sites in a single MMe account with one or more sites having a domain name.
    A. All sites are in the same Domain.sites2 files
1 - only one site can use the CNAME method of domain name forwarding and it must the top site in the left hand pane of iWeb.
2 - the other sites must use URL domain name forwarding which directs the domain name to the site's full MMe URL, http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/SiteName, or, if there is no domain name, just MobileMe's full URL.
    B. Each site is in its own Domain.sites2 file.
Again, only one site can use CNAME forwarding. This presents a problem since CNAME forwarding directs the domain name to the basic MMe account URL: http://web.me.com/MMe_Username/ which uses an index.html file in the root folder of the account, iDisk/Web/Sites. Each time a new site is published or an existing site uses the File->Publish Entire Site a new index.html file is created in that root directory, iDisk/Web/Sites folder, directing the browser to that particular site. This file is what the CNAME method uses to find the site it represents.
Therefore some steps must be taken to assure that the index.html file in the MMe Accounts root directory always points to the correct site. This can be accomplished is three ways.
1 - don't use the CNAME method. Just use URL forwarding . This, IMO, is the simplest method as it doesn't requre any additional effort on the user once the domain name has been set up.
2 - use the following method suggested by Wyodor in this topic: Is it possible to have multiple sites when using ur Domain name?
    In iWeb domainfile 1:
Create a dummy site : _dummy
    with a blank page.
Create your working site : Whatever
    Add pages
Publish both Sites to the same same location on the same server.
Your _dummy site is now the default Site.
    Check.
    In iWeb domainfile 2:
    Create/Use your CurrentSite.
Move a page to the top of the Site and back. Publish the Site.
iWeb will create a new index.html file in the root of the server and from now on CurrentSite is the default site.
    Check.
From now on, never move your Whatever Site to the top of the list in the iWeb sidebar and never change the page in the _dummy site.
Simply do not touch your _dummy ever again. And never forget that.
3 - use Ethmoid's suggested method in Using two sites - setting one up with separate domain? or republishing the entire site that uses CNAME forwarding. Just making a minor change and publishing the site changes does not create a new index.html file.
The entire site must be republsihing in order to get that new site.
Or keep a copy of the CNAME site's index.html file on your Mac and replace it manually in the iDisk/Web/Sites fodler when necessary.
NOTE: the CNAME method provides a shorter URL: http://www.DomainName.com/Site_Name/PageName. CNAME does not have masking.
The URL forwarding displays the full MMe URL:
    http://web.me.com/MMeUsername/Domain_Name/PageName.
With domain name masking that will be shortened to:
http://www.Domain_Name.com for every page of your site.
However, visitors will only be able to bookmark and enter at the first page of the site. If a page is refreshed the visitor is taken back to the first page. Also search engines will only be able to index the first page of the site.

  • Is it possible to create 2 sites in iweb and publish only one when wanted?

I use iWeb to create my website, I love it because it makes it easy for me to make and maintain my website. I'd like for my wife to be able to create her own website using iWeb also.
I don't host with .mac and neither will my wife. I publish to a folder on my desktop and ftp my files to my host.
My question is...can my wife and I both use iweb to design our websites seperatley and publish the sites seperatley? If so, how? When I publish to a folder it seems that everything in iWeb is published to the folder.

    Yes.
There is software available on VersionTracker.com or MacUpdate.com called iWebSites (go to either site and do a search for it). It lets you create more than 1 resource file and lets you choose between them. As a result, you can have as many individual websites as you like and upload them individually.
    Hope this helps.

    What's the answer?
    Thanks

Many thanks to  responded to my question and sorry not to get back sooner.
Yes, I discovered by this unfortunate experience that the names of photos are a serious issue if the site is to ever go to an FTP server.  Apple should discuss this carefully in their "manual".
One more question:  I uploaded the website to a folder on my desktop. When I open it, unlike the photos in iWeb, there are folders for each page which have all the photos in them. I went through each folder and changed the names to be FTP compatible. I'm using iWeb SEO Tool which allows one to upload from this local folder to an FTP server but having trouble.
Is this because there is an imbedment in iWeb that uses the old photo names to link to the actual photos and it can't find them because of the name changes?
Thanks again for your help ...

  • I created a website using iWeb, then published to MobileMe, how can i publish to iCloud?

I created a website using iWeb, then published to MobileMe, Mobile Me is now closed, how can i publish to iCloud?

iCloud does NOT allow you to host your web sites. You can continue to use iWeb but, will need a 3rd party web host to upload your websites to. Depending on the version of iWeb you are using you have a couple of publishing options:
iWeb '09 (3.0.4) you can publish to an FTP Server or a local folder. ( With the built in FTP in iWeb you will end up with an address like "www.YourDomain.com/sitename/Home.html )
iWeb '08 you can publish your website to a local folder
I have been using IX Webhosting for several years with little to no problems "usually the problem was something I did" and they have been quick to solve any issue I have come across. The have plans that start at $3.95 a mo (USD) and their customer service is top notch.

  • Get iWeb to publish as .htm to non-.mac server

    Hello,
I've created a website and now need to publish it to my university server to simply saving it in a folder. The problem I'm having is that the pages all need to be .htm not .html for some reason and I can't find a way to make iWeb do that...
Has anyone else had experience of using iWeb to publish in this way?
    Cheers
    James

That could be tricky. Simply renaming the files would not be an option, since you'd then have broken links pointing to the old .html filenames.
Are you sure you need to have the file extensions as .htm? In other words, have you tried uploading a test .html file and confirming whether or not it can be viewed via web browser? Older versions of Windows (like, *way back* in the day) required filenames to follow the 8.3 naming convention, but I can't imagine your university server is running something that old.
