IWeb to Homepage

I am so confused with iWeb and Homepage. I have been posting to my homepage for a few years. Should I transfer these pictures to iWeb? How? Then send out new address? Can you set up a counter? How do I choose different designs? Should I figure homepage is not used anymore.

I am also confused I just created a web sight with my
new I life 06 but I don't know what the purpose of a
homepage is for?
Imac 5
  Mac OS X (10.4.3)
The purpose of homepage offered as a part of .mac is to create a simple personal website at .mac based on a collection of templates and layouts offered by Apple. iWeb essentially does the same thing.
The difference is iWeb runs on the mac you are sitting in front of, and homepage runs on .mac servers. Theoretically iWeb provides better ease of use because it is a regular mac app like iPhoto, Safari, iMovie, etc.
If you haven't used homepage from .mac, don't have a .mac membership then you probably don't care about it and should continue to work with iWeb.
Last time I checked homepage didn't have a practical way to do blogging. Theoretically iBlog solved that problem, but the integration with homepage was about as bad as that between homepage and iWeb. Which is to say their was none, but you could use both of them anyhow to publish to your .mac homepage. Anyway iWeb has blogging as a template, if that sort of thing appeals to you.

  • Is Iweb replacing homepage?

Is Iweb replacing homepage? If not, which is better and what is the difference!

the biggest difference is that homepage is web based whereas you upload you files to you idisk and construct the pages online, which can be done from any virtually any computer (even a pee cee) anywhere.
Iweb is created on your computer and the final product is uploaded to idisk or a server. It can be updated from other locations or computers (apple), but you would need the "domain" file created by iweb and the ability to run iweb.
The comments I've seen don't indicate that apple is doing away with homepage, but who knows.
Iweb is a lot more flexible than homepage and hopefully as it goes thought a couple of updates they will work a few problems out.

  • IPhoto '06 iweb/NO HOMEPAGE SUPPORT and two computers - what is best?

I am a science teacher(+PhD student) - and use my powerbook for work/study and my imac as general file store and workhorse. I very dependant on .Mac to swap info and publish web pages(mostly pictures) on the fly etc. I need a reliable system because I simply don't have time to mess around.
I have just upgraded both computers to iLife '06 and have discovered that my workflows are going to be bothered - there is no way to edit iweb from both computers - and most importantly share photo files from both(most of my colleagues don't use safari and iPhoto RSS is thus redundant) Now the Homepage button has gone - I can really only run my .Mac picture files from my powerbook. Anything from the imac will have to be data pinned accross/networked. More hassel. I am really cross about this.
I would just like to be able to load up loads of pictures on to webpage, then later on when I have time to url them with iweb.
I don't have time to fuss about using idisk and homepage online - too time consuming. I don't want pretty - I just need to be able to communicate the information.
Shunting photos to a home page was simple way of letting people see your pictures (mostly electron micrsoscope pictures in my case!) - I could send the link in an email and bingo! XP users can join the fun.
So unless Apple read this and come to their senses sometime soon and allow multi location editing of iweb AND reinstate homepage support in iPhoto '06 I need to desperatly find a solution.
I notice a similar rant (though more a slanging affair at Apple has been locked! - why?)
I will have to reinstall iPhoto '05 on the iMac at least. Apparently it is possible to run both concurrently using an external/partitioned drive with the OS on it, is this correct?
I assume this means the other drive with the OSX on it will thus have it's own directory structure Library/Application Support etc - so there will be not conflict with the main system. Is this correct? What about my home directory - will iPhoto '05 and iPhoto '06 display the same photos - just with a different interface?
On the iMac I will just need to use the start up disks which have iPhoto '05 on them.
Other options involve getting an other web server and use something like Dreamweaver (well actually MacJournal has a simple web page creation tool - enough for me!) - but again I will have my swift work flow ruined.
I could spend hours fiddling with this - but I think a back step to iphoto '05 on my imac is the only option - but I lose out on the vast photo storage that iphoto '06 allows. On balance it is the better option.
Any one out there have a basic run through of what I need to do - or any one have any ideas? I am not a computer dunce - I simply don't have the time to be constantly fiddling with things.
As they say "you can take my money, my belongings, maybe even my missus! - all are replaeable - but no one can replace time wasted!

    Welcome to iLife 06,
This is a major problem, and you'll notice that this discussion area is ripe with users like you and I who are furious over this. Apple has just orphaned Homepage.
Here's a thread where we were discussing it and some people posted work arounds. Notice that this thread has been locked! The only locked thread I've ever seen on an Apple board. What's that all about?!
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=331564&tstart=0
Share your concerns directly with Apple. Let's hope that an upgrade or batch comes out soon that re-enables Homepage or that at least provides some way to migrage the pictures over. I have 100s of such pictures, now orphaned.
    Best,

  • What is the difference iWeb and Homepage

I'm trying to back up everything I had published to my iDisk (over several years) before installing Lion. The Gallery files were easy. But I'm confused about iWeb and a folder called "HomePage." The movies I had on iWeb...I could see and download. However, older movies are in a folder called HomePage. If I click on these older movies, I get a Quicktime Question mark symbol. For example, older movie 1 is located at: http://homepage.mac.com/username/iMovieTheater22.html and I cannot see it or download it. New movies, seem to be located in a different place, for example: http://web.me.com/username/myname/Austin_is_4!.html
Am I just out of luck?
Is there any way to retrieve the old movies?
Possibly worth noting...the old movies were probably published on an old MBP.

Homepage was Apple's early website hosting effort and that has been discontinued for quite a while now. The files created for the Homepage websites will reside on your iDisk in the iDisk/Sites folder.
Mount your iDisk on the Desktop and go to the Web folder.  There will be the html files for the various websites and pages.  The photo and video files used in those sites should be located in the Pictures and Movies folders.
For MobileMe websites all files for them will be inside folders in the iDisk/Web/Sites folder.

  • IWeb versus HomePage

I hope there is a solution !! Now that we have iWeb HomePage doesn't work the way it used to, as most of you have already found out. I hate it! I have a homepage set up with a number of photo albums to which I add new ones with some frequency. I used to be able to set up an album in iphoto and then click a button at the bottom to upload it to m .mac HomePage. Now, of course that button is gone, replaced by the iWeb button. Pages published with iWeb are totally different than those published with HomePage. I prefer the menu and album set up of HomePage.
I know that I can put my photos in an folder on my iDisk and then upload them that way and via the web wet up another page. This takes about 10 times as long to do because the photos show up in a random order and then have to be rearranged on the web which is very slow and dicey to do. Just now I was trying to this and after moving 10 or 12 pictures the page just quit, it just vanished. putting me back at square one! A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME.
There must be a better way.
    Can anyone help?

    Now that we have iWeb
HomePage doesn't work the way it used to,
It's not Homepage but iPhoto that doesn't work the way it used to. If you go back to iPhoto 5 you can do things as before I think.

  • Iweb and homepage

    Hello,
Trying out iweb and finding it obviously a thousand miles better than the old way : Homepage...
However, I have been using Homepage for several years and all my family/friends are starting to remember that url which was already not the simplest of all: http://homepage.mac.com/$appleid. Quite OK though... With iweb, It seems that they will have to get used to another url which is even worse...Any idea on how to make this transition easier and friendly.
    - I don't like much the idea of redirecting the users through a message "Please visit us at our new url...."
    - I have seen that some users have just bought a domain and redirect automatically to the right site...That's nice but costly, no ?
    Any idea would be welcome.
    Thank you.

    Hi
I am one of the many who have bought a domain, as above $8 a year, but from ez-domainnameregistration.com (buying the domain for 5 years reduced it to $8 a year).
It is very easy to do, just sign up with a provider and set your domain to automatically forward to your iWeb address.
Godaddy gets a lot of good press on this board as well.
    Good luck

  • Is iWeb and Homepage diffeent?

I wish to have photos available to see. I do not understand if there is a diffeence between Homepage and iWeb. If there is a difference, which is best to use?
I would be adding and changing the photos periodically.
I had set up a "Homepage" but cannot get into it to delete it. How do I do this?

    The differences:
Homepage uses an online editor within the .Mac service and sites have a URL:
    http://homepage.mac.com/userid/...
iWeb uses an offline editor and sites have a URL:
    http://web.mac.com/userid/iWeb/...
iWeb is much more flexible and for your photos you can use iWeb's Photos template which has an optional slideshow feature. Also clicking on a Photos template thumbnail causes the full-size image to appear in a pop-up window. More info about iWeb's photo capabilities is here...

  • Iweb/.mac homepage???

I'm new to mac web publishing and to .mac. I have created a web page through iweb without much problem. Can anyone tell me the difference between the homepage on .mac and my web pages I created on iweb and published to .mac? My home page still pops up with all the options to create a look but I'm confused on how to create something out of it.
Any help is greatly appreciated.... lakerider

Another way to separate sites so you can work on them independently is to use iWebSites.
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.

  • Hi. Is anybody in knowledge how I can import/transfer iWeb data (homepage) from my iMac to my Mac Book

I have created my websites (private & company) with iWeb on my iMac, since a few months I have a Mac Book and now I want to transfer my iWeb data to my Mac Book. I've tried to find the data file but couldn't. I've tried to copy the whole program but it doesn't work.
Is anybody knowing how to tranfer this data?

  • Iweb and homepage url

Hello! I am very new to iweb. I would like my url to look like: http://web.mac.com/user name, but instead it looks like: http://web.mac.com/user name/Site/Welcome.html.
I am sure there is a very simple way to fix this, but I can't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated!

Unfortunately not. That is the way that websites made in iWeb and published to MobileMe will look like. The url will always be http://web.me.com/username/sitename/Welcome.html.
It is just that you have to call your site something in iWeb. It won't accept it otherwise, so you could shorten it even more to something like S so it would then be web.me.com/username/S/Welcome.html. The only other way is to register a domain name and then use masked forwarding so all you get as a url is www.yourdomainname.com.

  • Any way to add a link FROM HomePage TO iWeb?

Any way to add a link FROM HomePage TO iWeb? The instruction I found in Help only discussed adding a link from iWeb to HomePage. Since most of my family already accesses my HomePage, I'd like to be able to add a link to the iWeb pages
This is the only instruction I've been able to find in connection with this topic: "If you’ve previously published webpages using HomePage, those pages are still available at http://homepage.mac.com/YourMemberName. Websites you create in iWeb are available at http://web.mac.com/YourMemberName/iweb/SiteName. If you’ve created webpages using the .Mac HomePage feature, you can put a link to your old homepage on the first page of your new iWeb site. On your iDisk, your HomePage sites are stored in the Sites folder. Your iWeb sites are in the Web folder."
    Thanks
I use both my Mac and my Dell

I'll try this, but why in the world should it be so complex? I'll let you know if it works. but how do we tell Apple/Mac that this shouldn't be rocket science, but rather something that's done with the click of a button. They're both .mac software products. Why can't they talk to each other?

  • 2 Homepages with Iweb ??

Hi, I am really in trouble...I created 2 homepages with iweb. Homepage 1 is already online. Everything fine so far. The problem is the second homepage as it is apparently using the same index file as homepage number 1 - can this be? I do publish through Strato and not Mac. I export the homepage number 2 to a separate file. But homepage number 1 is always registered together with number 2. i cannot separate the 2 homepages.
And if I open the folder of homepage number 2 and copy the index file on the same level as folder homepage 1 and hompeage 2 mac askes me whether I would like to replace the existing index file . This is the index file from homepage number 1. If I do this, it is not getting better. My homepage number 2 is not working...urgently need your help - thanks!!

Yes, I understand perfectly that you are not using MobileMe to publish to, which is why I asked how many domain names you had.
I know you said that you have separated the folders, but did you separate the domain files? If not you need to do this so that the sites can be published to a folder separately. To find the domain files, go to User/Library/Application Support/iWeb and then domain.sites file.
Have you given both your sites different names within iWeb at the top? If not, you should do this, or publishing your sites might get confusing.
When you publish to a folder from iWeb, what you get is a site folder that has the same name as your site within iWeb, plus a separate index.html file. You need to upload both of these. What I suggest you do is go to your second site within iWeb and publish this to a folder again and you should get the site folder and the index file published. Then upload to your server again and if you upload both, then it should work. You do need to place the items in the Public_html folder on your server for your site to be seen.
If I were you, I would use a good ftp program such as Cyberduck to upload - it is totally free to download and easy to use.

  • Has anyone published their iWeb site to their old Homepage folder?

    Hi,
I'd like to avoid changing URLs, and was thinking I could just publish the iWeb site to the folder my homepage site is in on my iDisk. Would that work? Has anyone done that before? Any issues I should know about?
    Thanks for your help!
    Lora

Lora. It can be done but not much is to be gained and many features will not work the same as if published to a "folder" and then uploaded to your iDisk.
Do a bit of "homework" and learn some of the rules about iWeb, Homepage and your iDisk.
Changing your URL's is the easy part. Getting all the external parts to work is, well, work.
Plenty of ways to integrate older pages (via external links) into your new iWeb pages.
The brave can edit the html code to make their own iWeb and Homepage Sites:

  • IWeb and Dreamweaver

Since it seems iWeb doesn't support Flash animations, I'd like to use Dreamweaver 8/Flash 8 as part of the Web-publishing workflow.
However, much like the Contribute thread, it doesn't seem to be very straightforward, and my suspicion is the index.html file that is created with iWeb (and HomePage).
Can anyone tell me how to properly use Dreamweaver once an iWeb site is published?

    Scott
I may be wrong, but if my memory serves my correctly, there were some threads about using flash created in iWork (Keynotes I think).
I have no idea if this will meet your requirements, but I am sure that there were some sample sites posted.
Just turned up this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1667896&#1667896
