IWeb versus Freway

I'm working on completely redesigning my web site. So far I actually used MS Word to generate HTML. I'm trying out iWeb, but find that maybe it has too many limitations. For example, you cannot change the format of the table of contents, or create drop-down menus, or have a link to another part of a page (a bookmark?). Is it worth spending the extra money and buy Freeway Express? Does anybody have an opinion about that?

I will answer my own question if anyone might be interested. I have played around with iWeb and Freeway (Express), and here is a mini comparison. Freeway is an excellent program. It's very easy to make advanced contents (drop down menus etc etc.). If you want to do that kind of things in iWeb it seems you have to do all kind of tricks. However, generating and maintaining a simple website based on contents from other programs is much easier in iWeb. For example, you can just copy and paste text from other applications with formating (mostly) intact. In Freeway you essentially have to use unformatted text. Applying HTML formatting in Freeway is not easy either. There are many other features (e.g., the ingenious Apple method of aligning objects) in iWeb that makes making a simple web site easy.
To me, being able to easily publish text that changes often is most important, and I therefore decided to stay with iWeb. I just wish there was an upgrade path, i.e., like iPhoto/Aperture iMovie/final cut, so that if you run into the limitations of iWeb, there would be a way to go to a more advanced program without starting all over.

  • QT in iWeb versus Published site.

Just curious. Why is it when I insert a QT movie into the iWeb site it runs with a jitter, however when I publish the site and view the video there, it runs smoothly?

Could be something as simple as when iWeb is working you're taxing system resources due to RAM limitations and when Safari plays it you're not. Try closing a few apps and see if it helps.

  • IWeb versus HomePage

I hope there is a solution !! Now that we have iWeb HomePage doesn't work the way it used to, as most of you have already found out. I hate it! I have a homepage set up with a number of photo albums to which I add new ones with some frequency. I used to be able to set up an album in iphoto and then click a button at the bottom to upload it to m .mac HomePage. Now, of course that button is gone, replaced by the iWeb button. Pages published with iWeb are totally different than those published with HomePage. I prefer the menu and album set up of HomePage.
I know that I can put my photos in an folder on my iDisk and then upload them that way and via the web wet up another page. This takes about 10 times as long to do because the photos show up in a random order and then have to be rearranged on the web which is very slow and dicey to do. Just now I was trying to this and after moving 10 or 12 pictures the page just quit, it just vanished. putting me back at square one! A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME.
There must be a better way.
    Can anyone help?

    Now that we have iWeb
HomePage doesn't work the way it used to,
It's not Homepage but iPhoto that doesn't work the way it used to. If you go back to iPhoto 5 you can do things as before I think.

  • IWeb versus .Mac

I am looking into purchasing .mac and iLife. On perusing, it seems iLife has iWeb and .Mac is all about interacting with the web. Why purchase both? What are the distinct differences? Anyone?
Thanks. Novice to the web using realm,
    KO

iWeb is an application for constructing websites on your computer.
.Mac is the Apple server where you can publish your site to view it in a web browser.
You do not have to have a .Mac account to publish your site. You can use the services of a web hosting company - most of which will give you a better deal and better performance than .Mac.

  • IWeb versus WordPress for blogging

Just seeking advice - I need to create professional blog which points to my registered URL (eg registered on GoDaddy - eg. www.robenzo.com/blog).
I am Ok with iWeb - but I find it rather clunky for everyday blogging. I don't want to have to migrate from one site to another in the future.
Anyone out there with experience with both iWeb 09 and Wordpress? Would you recommend simply starting with WordPress and not iWeb? Ultimately, I want my own URL not, the WordPress one. So just want to know which was to go.
    Thanks

Robenzo ~ I've experimented with both iWeb's blog and WordPress's and I would recommend WordPress rather than iWeb. To use your own URL (Domain), see this doc:
    http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/
If you'd prefer something simpler than WordPress, there is this new, free web-based service which also allows domain names:

  • IWeb versus Wordpress

I've read a lot of the posts here about the demise of iWeb support/upgrades, but I want some opinions: I am looking at starting a blog, and am an Apple loyalist, and like iWeb. I have my own domain, and have set up a Wordpress account, and am using Wordpress's servers, but have not yet begun using Wordpress to create the blog. If you were starting a blog now, would you just give up on iWeb and use Wordpress alone? Is iWeb at the moment robust enough to be usable for the next 3-4 years? Is there anything iWeb can do that I will miss by letting it go and using Wordpress?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.

If I were you I would stick with WordPress - I have designed numerous websites using iWeb, but have never used the iWeb blog, simply because I think other blogging systems are better.
I have always used WordPress as a blog and have just created a link to my WordPress blog from my website. However, as I have external hosting, I have WordPress.org loaded onto my server so my blog has become http://www.domain.com/Blog.  WordPress is more customisable like this when loaded onto your server and I have designed my WordPress blogs to look the same as my websites with the same colour schemes etc.
Probably best to stick with WordPress and not use the iWeb blog - you can do more with WordPress than you ever could with iWeb - embedded blogs in iWeb never look good, so I would not do this personally.

  • Cut-off text. Please help me. Thank you.

    Hello,
I published my site several weeks ago with no problems at all. Now, suddenly, text (rendered as images) throughout the site is being cut-off, sometimes to the point of invisibility.
my site can be found at: http://www.milescollyer.com/
(I can provide screen shots of how it appears in iWeb versus Safari if needed)
I have tried almost everything that I can think of including:
-increasing the size of text boxes to a generous size
-increasing/decreasing the size of the font
-moving the text boxes up and down slightly in an attempt to fully reveal the text
    -deleting and remaking text boxes
I have been reviewing this forum for days looking for help with this problem. I am at a loss of what more I can do. PLEASE help.
    Thank you,
    -miles

I noticed there are also diamond symbols with ? in them which are showing up too. Are you creating your text links within iweb and then using the inspector to link them to other pages? I have seen this type of problem when putting in forms, but never with text links. One way around this might be to link the text box instead of the text to other pages. for example, when you highlight the text and go to the inspector then enable as a link simply do the same but dont highlight the text just select the text box. Try it on a few and republish, its worth a try. You also might want to try this first, do a publish all rather than just publish. To do this go to file and select publish all to .mac. Sometimes this is an easy fix to weird problems. Your site looks nice and I hope you can get it up and running. Good luck.

  • IWeb blog pages versus TypePad, Blogger / Blogspot

    Hello bloggers,
I want to start a blog to share my thoughts, ideas and photo snapshots.
My question is: should I do that with iWeb and my dot Mac account, or use one of the on-line services like Blogger.com?
What are the pros an cons of those two worlds? Any experiences you can share?

But this is still not browser-based (from any location or machine)?
Viviti is browser-based. I applied for and received a free account — there was nothing to download and I experimented with making some pages via Safari on my Mac. And I would be able to update those same pages via Internet Explorer on a PC, say, in an internet cafe.
I think I'll wait till mobile.me is launched. Maybe that has something new.
It doesn't look like the first incarnation of mobileme will have anything new as far as online creation of pages or blogs goes. For its feature set at launch in July, click here...
But probably in the future we'll see improvements to include that type of functionality.

  • Having a song play thru an entire site in iWeb 08 versus single page

I like the feature of being able to add a song to my iWeb 08 website.. but what doesn't work well is that the song is only on one page. When someone clicks on a subpage link the song stops.
Is there a way to have the song play thru the entire website no matter what page is surfed? And why not? That seems like a simple feature that all the other web programs have. If i edit the site in Dreamweaver and make that happen using frames... the site is no longer editable in iWeb.

Ok... the code you supply on your site doesn't work with a .Mac account...
    Hi James,
I'm sure we gonna have this solved...
I went through the process myself and tried it on my .Mac trial account (fortunately I have a trial account!)...
    http://web.mac.com/whateveridontcare/Welcome/Music.html
It works for me... The only thing that might happen is that the music needs some time to start (you can see that in the time progress bar of the player (there's a brighter thing that shows it is loading)
    Question:
    1. Did you put the music into this location?
For .Mac go to the Finder menu and select Go/iDisk/My iDisk/ or hit SchiftCommand(Apple)i and then go to /Web/Sites/. Drop your file into the "Sites" folder or create a folder you call 'Music'
Entering: http://web.mac.com/username/filename.mp3 or http://web.mac.com/username/Music/filename.mp3 in your browser should bring up this file.
    2. Sure you published the page? I don't think the problem lies in the code of the player if the url isn't working. Seems like it isn't up. Sure you put the right URL here?

  • IWeb Photo Pages vs. MobileMe Gallery

I post a personal blog with quite a few pictures. Does anyone know the advantages to using an iWeb Albums/Photo pages versus using the widget to link to MobileMe galleries?

You should look at the user experience. iWeb albums are attractive and easy for the user to use. Widgets can be useful for a quick way to link to an external gallery but as a user I would find it a less attractive option than the iWeb albums. Would you, if you were a stranger visiting the site, find one or the other option more or less attractive?
The greatest advantage with any web page element is where the user finds something enticing, and therefore wanting to return to the site. You optimize with that as your first thought and then design accordingly.

  • Posting pics on iWeb Photo pages

hi, i did some research on the issue i am having but couldn't find any resolutions. i'm hoping someone can help me with their experience / expertise. this is the weirdest thing and perhaps i'm overlooking something obvious?
i have taken digital pics in both portrait and landscape formats. eg. took pics of tall buildings using portrait versus a wide view of a scenery by using landscape.
as i dragged these portrait pics of the building onto the photo pages (specifically with the 'travel' template), it automatically converts it to landscape. so now the buildings are on its sides when it should have been upright. i made sure that the original pic is portrait and the buildings are upright under Apple Preview. i've looked and there are no options for me to modify the pics by ways of rotate.
anyone experienced this and know why it's happening? suggestions?
thank you very much for hearing me out...

    kaisuke:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Cameras with the auto-rotate feature adds a tag to the file telling applications that can read the tag how to rotate and display it. iPhoto will read that tag and create a physically rotated modified version for you to use. If the a-r file goes directly into iWeb it gets displayed as landscape because iWeb can't read that tag. Some applications can read the tag and others cannot.
I've turned of auto-rotate in my camera and upload to a folder on the desktop where I use a 3rd party application to physically rotate them before importing into iPhoto. Saves space as no modified file is created and avoids the occasional file getting displayed incorrectly.

  • IWeb update - republishing question

Since I built my site with the first incarnation of iWeb, and the update has been installed, will simply republishing the content change the images from PNG to JPG or do the graphics need to be reimported into the pages?
Does iWeb do the conversion upon import or upon publishing the site?

to clarify, many of the images that iWeb published are big (in file size) and going with a JPG compression versus PNG would be a big benefit to my site. I know you can't specify the format it exports to, but JPG would be best for most of the images, and I'm wondering how to get there - by reimporting or just by republishing.

  • IWeb Blog to non-.mac Domain

    Hello good folks,
I have my business Website at its own (non apple) domain. I would like to use iWeb to create a blog, and then attach that blog to my business Website. (Therefore, it would be an alternative to wordpress, blogspot, etc.)
    Is this
    -- possible?
    -- advisable?
    -- easy?
    -- pain?
A secondary question: If those answers are a reasonable "yes," then is it possible to update my blog from both my Mac Pro and my PowerBook, and still keep everything reasonably organized?
    Many thanks, as always.

    Mireille,
The helpful tips and product review 'blog' is an 'add-on' to our online store which has a shopping cart and it's SEO set ups that work well. It was made from a template in GoLive. The store is the primary concern and the blog is intended to be a convenient format to provide useful dynamic content to drive search engines and customers to our store.
If I could figure out to use something besides a frame I would as I understand the frames are not search engine friendly either. After submitting the sitemap for the blog, it was interesting to see that only the apparent entries get listed in Google. So, it appears that it is dependent on how many 'excerpts you show' in iWeb and not the archives and it's content.
If there is a sitemap generating app that will point Google to the content in the archives, I'd be very interested to know about it and how effective it is. I've found site search options I can add to the blog content if I load it directly to the site and set up pages versus frames....if the content can be searchable and generate the proper site map.
Here's an interesting page from Rage: http://www.ragesw.com/blog/2008/04/12/seo-for-iweb-how-to-get-your-iweb-websites -into-google-other-major-search-engines/ (which I notice you responded to....:-) )
What does Rage do that this free option I used do better? http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/

  • Posting an excel doc on iweb

I want to have an excel doc available on the web so i can use it from home or office. I wil live on the web so when I change it from any location. if is the most up to date version. I thought about using .mac idisk but you need to down load the file and then re-upload it so there is too much of a chanc of forgeting to o this and having a non upto date version.
is iweb the best solution or is there a better way

How do you intend to use this? Almost any method you choose is going to require a little administration, but, depending on what you're trying to do, you can structure the administration versus the ability.

  • Anyone create a .mobi website yet with iWeb?

If so, what size did you use for the site and what else is unique about a .mobi site versus a regular site (other than leaving out a lot of stuff)?
    Thanks!

A dotMobi site is specifically designed for mobile phone.
If you do [a search with Google|http://www.google.com/search?q=.mobi%20sites] you will find the information.
    [Wikipedia has the details|http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.mobi]
    I found these mobi sites: [BusinessWeek.mobi| BusinessWeek.mobi], [BMW.mobi|BMW.mobi], [NBA.mobi|NBA.mobi] en [MSN.mobi|MSN.mobi].
Looking at the source code of these site, I doubt iWeb is the recommended software to build these sites. They are pretty lean. iWeb is not.
