IWeb vs. competitors: suggestion?

Please, a suggestion for an absolute source code dummy and DOS (HTML, JAVA, UNIX, ...) hater:
Should I start creating webpages (for semi-professional use) with iWeb or Freeway Express / RapidWeaver / ... ?
I have read the controversy about iWeb's awful code output, but I am an absolute code illiterate and I'm not willing to learn it. I just want to handle this app like, say, InDesign - and I want the result to look good with every major browser.
Thanks a lot!

  • QUICKTOUR software and iWeb any software suggestions?

Hi I am selling some custom software that we created and I need to make some sort of "quick tour" NOT a video something that will walk them through a set of screen shots. Any suggestions? I have a PC also (YUK) for any reccomended application.

It's not gone - just a version too old to run on 10.10.3.  However, read the following:

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1
If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash
Install the App from the App Store.
Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
The above should allow you to get iPhoto 9.6.1 which will run under 10.10.3.

  • Problems with text in iWeb publishing much larger, or smaller than in iWeb (it is insane)!

More than a year ago I had a problem with my iWeb not publishing correctly: links to other websites would not open in a separate window as designed in iWeb. I got help from an AppleCare techie and after he did a lot of tests, he concluded I had a corrupted Domain file (which became apparent after I upgraded to OS Snow Leopard).  I don't remember if I discussed with this techie another problem I had been having for as long as I had used iWeb, and that was "exploding" text: certain words, often italicized, would be huge, after publishing, relative to the surrounding text.  Sometimes certain words, or sentences would be smaller than designed in iWeb.  Through trial and error I would sort of solve these problems by enlarging text boxes, or making the offending word or phrase one text point smaller.  Sometimes deleting the text box entirely, and starting over would work.  And then there are the weird things that happen when my wife opens my website in Internet Explorer: things that make no sense and seem to be totally out of my control.
So, I've spent a long time rebuilding my website in this supposedly uncorrupted Domain file, and today I finally finished and published to my hard drive, checked it out, and the "exploding" text is there with a vengeance.  So much so that I may just stick with my original ("corrupted") Domain file, the text problem on this new one seems even worse than the old one.  Anyone had this problem?  I meant to ask this question years ago, but got a bit lazy.
Another question is: I've heard Apple is going to discontinue iWeb.  Despite my problems with the program, I rely on it.  What are the options going to be for iWeb users?

Well you heard wrong didn't you!
Apple is discontinuing MobileMe, which is the hosting in favour of iCloud services which will not contain any hosting.
iWeb is an app and as far as we know you can still continue to use it - it will still work so carry on using it if you are happy with it.
If you want to look at other alternatives to iWeb, then others suggest RapidWeaver and Sandvox as being closer to iWeb - both are available via the Mac App store.
Also Freeway Express and Flux 3 are worth looking at - more design freedom and you are not restricted to templates as with RapidWeaver.

  • I cannot open iWeb where I need to update my website.

My website is hosted by GoDaddy.  But I developed it and keep it updated on the iWeb application.  I have been having startup problems with my laptop and cannot even backup my files because Time Machine is not working and whenever I try to backup my files to an external hard drive I get "read/write error" messages for certain files or photos.  It then ceases to backup the files not in error.   So, I am in limbo.  Without backing everything up especially the photos which are important to the website, I can't go further in doing a system wipe on the hard drive.
Any ideas on 1) opening up iWeb? 2) overriding error messages to allow backup of files to continue?
One last question.  Does anyone know how one can transfer a a whole website application and its content to another website application without doing all the input over again?  My website has over 1,000 photos and 7 line captions as well as numerous explainatory text.
    Thanks.

1: Don't erase anything, use another Mac or external boot drive to make sure you have a copy of your files, or use something like Data Rescue on another bootable drive or Mac to recover files so your sure you have them.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Consider your TimeMachine drive corrupted, because one can't verify it works to restore (like a bootable clone can) you won't know until it's too late.
2: Fix your machine once your files are safe off of it and the drive with your files is disconnected and verified on another machine.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
3: iWeb is discontinued, but yes you can transfer the files and use another program.
Discontinuation of iWeb in iCloud transition
In June 2011, rumors emerged that iWeb would not be developed further.[3] Similar services like Jimdo were already offering special support for users planning to switch from iWeb.[4] On June 30 2012 Apple finally pulled the plug on MobileMe. All iWeb websites hosted on MobileMe disappeared if not hosted elsewhere. Apple provided instructions
of how to move iWeb sites to another host. In this New York Times article
David Pogue shows replacement options for MobileMe services, including iWeb. His suggestions were Jimdo and Weebly.

  • Rollovers in iWeb?

Hi, I am a pro retoucher, and have looked around for an easy way to put images in some sort of gallery view, but with rollover effects displaying before images and after images if you roll the mouse over them.
Any idea if iWeb has any plans in ever putting this kind of thing in? (If they haven't already) I see there are HTML snippets one can embed and other fancy workarounds, but my HTML skills are extrmemly limited and can't see how I can integrate that into the galleries functionality as it's all backend coding stuff and I am very much front end designer...
May just have to learn the next best thing - SiteGrinder - as that is Photoshop converted to websites, and with Photoshop being my strength, seems the way to go, but even that requires a lot of time going thru the tutorials...
Just hoped there was a quick way of doing it in iWeb. Any suggestions/insight most welcome

  • Can anyone advise on how to get a shopping cart on iweb please

can anyone advise on how to get a shopping cart on iweb please

I would suggest using Pay Pal. If you sign up for a free business account you can use the merchant services to set up buy now buttons, add to cart buttons, and the shopping cart. The only draw back is that your can't customize the look to match your site. I would use pay pal for two reasons, people know and trust them and its much cheaper than having your own merchant account. Good luck

  • Clone an iWeb Site?

I would like to use an existing iWeb site as a template for another site, which will replace the first one. I want to leave the first on up online, and re-design it using the cloned site, then publish the new one.
But there is no "Save As" function in iWeb.
    Any suggestions?

iWeb stores the website data in a Domain.sites2 file...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/iWeb-Tips.html
Duplicate this file, give it another name or store it in a separate folder and then launch it in iWeb to create the content for the new site by double clicking the file.
If you are using Lion, look further down the above page for info on how to open Domain files.

  • IWeb-made website posted to Google Page Creator

I've got a website that was made in iWeb and I want to upload it to Google Page Creator as a non-homepage subpage. My problem is that when I publish the iWeb page to a folder, it creates subfolders for the graphics and extras. GPC doesn't support folders, so when I upload the page, it is missing its pictures, since the iWeb page is referencing the subfolder. I was told on GPC support forum that I have to specify in iWeb for the pictures to be referenced to the root directory of the page. Then I would be able to upload the page and all the pictures, and the page would still load correctly. How do I get iWeb to reference the pictures in the same directory as the page....or how do I get iWeb to output the page without the subfolder?

Thank you for your suggestion. I eventually hacked out a fix by editing the html code produced by iWeb like you suggested. I changed all subfolder references to point to the same directory the html file was in, then I moved (and in some cases renamed - both in finder and in the code) the files in the subfolders up to the html root folder. After uploading, everything looks and works fine. Except for one issue with IE6, which I have started another thread for. If you would like to help out with that issue as well, I would be extremely grateful! It's located here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1359321&tstart=0
    Thanks again!

  • Homepage "Site Menu" in iweb??

I am very familiar with Homepage and am trying to figure out iweb. I want to create a site called "Kitchens" which would list say ten different kitchens and various photos from those kitchens. If I had three pictures from each of the ten kitchens I'd upload the photos from iphoto, listing each kitchen name ("Johnson Kitchen", "Jones Kitchen", etc.) Then in Homepage I'd select "Site Menu" which would create a page showing a button from each of those ten kitchens which would link to the respective kitchen. I'd then place that page at the top so when the person selected "Kitchens" they would see a page showing ten buttons of each kitchen. Then selecting the "Johnson Kitchen" would take them to the page showing the three pictures of that kitchen. How do you do this in iweb? Any suggestions? thanks...

The way in which I have done this is to create a "blank" page and then drop photos onto it and enable them as hyperlinks, adding text as necessary. I think that I used the Welcome page as a template and deleted/minimized the fields I didnt want. Clicking on one of the images takes you to a Photo page that doesn't show in the navigation bar.
Other people have used the Photo page, and then placed images over those in they have added to the template. Then you send the template images to the back and enable the front ones as hyperlinks.
It really is your choice, with hindsight (mine is 20/20) I would have used the Photo page option, it gives you a nice neat layout without thinking about it!

  • "Missing" iWeb sites

After I installed the 08 iLife software, none of my previous web designs are listed (i.e carried over) in the new 08 iWeb.
Any suggestions on how to bring my previous web designs back into iWeb 08 would be greatly appreciated.
    PS -
    (1) I did download the latest 08 software updates & the problem still is there.
    (2) All of my previous web designs are currently on my .MAC account.
    (3) I saved all of the previous web designs to folders too.
    Regards-
    Dan

Go into Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb to find your old domain.sites files. Put them into separate folders named after each site.
Rename the files domain.sites2 and then double click any one to launch it in iWeb '08.

  • IWeb crashes when importing photo album

Every time I attempt to drag a photo album from the "Media" area (from my iPhoto library) into my "My Albums" page on iWeb, the program crashes. I get an error message that it says it is sending to Apple. I've tried reinstalling iLife '09 as well as checking for updates (I have the latest version of iWeb). Any suggestions?

Try Steps 5 thru 9 below:
    Try the following:
1 - delete the iWeb preference file, com.apple.iWeb.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - go to your User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete the contents.
    3 - reboot.
4 - launch iWeb and see if the domain file will open.
    If that doesn't help continue:
5 - move the domain file from your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder to the Desktop.
6 - launch iWeb, create a new test site and save.
7 - go to the your User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder and delete the new domain file.
8 - move your domain file from the Desktop to the iWeb folder.
9 - launch iWeb and try again.

  • IWeb '09 links jacked up....

Trying to create a website/resume. When others or myself, follow the links across the top in a sequential order, the links don't work.
    <Home> <The Man> <The Musician> <The Minister> <Media> <Music>
When I click from Musician to Minister...links are dead. I have to go back to Home and then to minister for it to work.
Newby to iWeb. Any suggestions would be most grateful.
    www.dominicmenard.com
    Thanks,
    Dominic

it actually wasn't the www.dominicmenard.com image, it was a larger image below the nav bar that covered it. my wife actually found it...but thanks for your help in helping me realize it was being covered up.
    Kindest Regards,

  • All I have are exported folders from iWeb. How do I import them back. Don't have extension.

A computer was fried. We didn't copy the extension from iWeb for the website, but we did export all of the folders for each website inside iWeb. The computer had to be restored to factory settings. The website is published on Go Daddy, and all the files are accessible, I'm unable to load it into iWeb. Any suggestions? How do I get these files back into iWeb so that I can manage the websites again?

You can't. iWeb can't read or import HTML files, only create them.  So, without the Domain.site file you'll have to recreate the website from scratch.
However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on how to use some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the creation of the new site.

  • 3rd party application publishing to homepages and iweb

I have some 3rd party apps (Mac gourmet, comic life, etc) that publish to the Sites folder on your idisk.
The url for them is somewhere of homepage.mac.com like
    http://homepage.mac.com/jchiarelli/MyRecipes/culinarysecrets/index.html
    http://homepage.mac.com/jchiarelli/MyRecipes/ChristmasCookies/index.html
    http://homepage.mac.com/jchiarelli/comiclife/
Now i didnt see any mention of the url for homepages going away with the axe of homepages application, but i would like to be prepared and better integrated with iweb.
Any suggestions for integrating iweb with static html pages created by 3rd party apps?
    Thanks Joe

Joe ~ Since iWeb can't import HTML pages, one suggestion is to publish your current sites to the same iDisk space iWeb uses by following the instructions in this Apple doc:
MobileMe: How to publish a custom website
...This would put your sites in Web > Sites folder and the URL would be:
    http://web.me.com/membername/foldername/
Then you could remove your sites occupying the "HomePage" area, i.e. the Sites folder on iDisk.

  • Import to iWeb

My computer where the iWeb (.site2) files were stored locally was stolen. The only files I have are the ones published on our server. Is there any way to import these files onto iWeb? Any suggestions? Many thanks!

iWeb uses the domain.sites2 file in this folder :
    ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb/
where ~ is your Home directory : Command-Shift-H in the finder.
If the file is missing you have to start from scratch.
You can copy/paste the objects and text from your current published webpages to re-create your Site in iWeb.
If you have a Backup you can use that one.
You cannot import HTML webpages back into iWeb.
