Iweb vs frontpage

ok, i know the second you saw the word 'frontpage' you groaned!! i have no patience for frontpage, and am new to building a webpage. 'new' meaning i could never get it right, had trouble with design. i am a content person, not a design person!
i've read this board about not doing anything too fancy with pics, etc. to keep the iweb page compatible with internet explorer.
my questions is.......can a newbie have success with iweb? is it easier to manage than frontpage? i realize not all users on this board have tried frontpage.
thanks in advance from a nervous newbie who maybe may buy a mac tomorrow but is obsessing tonite!!!

I've never used FP but anytime I've asked others at work about it, they aren't particularly thrilled by it.
As far as iWeb is concerned, I truly believe it's a very good web tool for a novice as my self. I truly don't know any web coding and the likes.
My personal advice to you is just start with one of the templates, create a basic site with the way that template allows and publish - just a good way to get a feel for it.
After that you will probably start getting better ideas and hopefully more creative even if it's just by good iamgery.
Become very familiar with the inspector palette and you should be fine.
Lots of help here too.

  • IWeb & FrontPage for Mac's

    Yo!
I've only had a mac for a couple of months & just got round to sorting out my websites that I had designed on my PC with Microsoft FrontPage. However, iWeb doesnae recognise them, so I can't even open them on my mac, never mind edit & publish them! Also, unless I am very much mistaken I have to pay Apple for the privelige of uploading - when I used to upload for free to my ISP server!
    So.......
    1) Why does iWeb not recognise my websites?
    2) I'm inclined to forget about iWeb & buy FrontPage for mac's. I believe there is one version out (1.0), but it's only for OS 9.0 & below, so hopefully it'll be updated soon. Has anyone got owt to say about FP 4 mac's? either good or bad?
    Cheers!

iWeb does not have the ability to import previously published sites - it is NOT an html editor in the same way that Dreamweaver is and iWeb actually creates the html that is needed on publishing.
So you have the following options:-
    1. Purchase a copy of Dreamweaver for Mac or PC and import your sites from FrontPage into Dreamweaver to update them - this is an expensive option especially for Mac, if you need to purchase the full package - take a look at the Adobe website to see for yourself.
    2. Set up Boot Camp on your Mac and then purchase a copy of either Windows XP, Vista or 7 and load this onto your Mac so that you can then run Windows and use Windows software on your Mac, so Expression Web 3.
    3. Purchase a copy of Expression Web 3 - if you already have FrontPage then the upgrade price is cheaper than the full price, which is only £117 - this might be your best option in the long run.
    4. Check out the other options that others have given you here, but remember that any option does need an ability to both import and edit html code to work - iWeb does not have this facility.

  • Building a website

Hi, i am going to build a wesite for my parents company. I don't really know anything about building websites but i am open to learn. I am quite good with mac's and semi self taught myself how to use programs such as Final Cut Pro and Logic.
So would iWeb be appropriate, or should i be looking at using a more complex program.
The website will be fairly simple, just text, images and maybe video, possibly a forum.
    Thanks very much

iWeb would be appropriate to use and will give you a very professional looking site indeed.
I came to using iWeb from FrontPage. I have built my website for the work that I do and am impressed with the overall professional look compared to the FrontPage version.
    Go with iWeb.

  • IWeb/FrontPage quick question

    Hi all:
-I have a friend who has a website she designed in MS FrontPage
-I need to take ownership of only one of the pages within her website
If I design the page in iWeb, designate the URL of the particular page within her site (which will now contain a podcast), and transfer via FTP does anyone foresee any issues? Her design is quite simple and I can easily match it in iWeb.
I'm just getting to know iWeb so any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Yes, you can basically just link to the single page from her website somewhere within your iWeb designed site. You can even make the hyperlink look just like one of the standard navigation menu links by creating a dummy page and then editing the dummypage HTML to redirect to the external page.
Here is a tutorial from Will Englefield on this type of redirection...
    http://web.mac.com/will.englefield/iWeb/WillG4PB/Redirect.html
    Good luck to you!

  • Microsoft Frontpage to iWeb 08

Hey all, I tried searching for this topic but couldn't really come up with anything. I am in charge of the website where I work. When I took over the site was already created and on a remote server that I log into through Microsoft Frontpage. I rebuilt the site when I took over. Now I got a mac a few months ago. I'm not really interested in rebuilding the site again, but I would like to start creating some new pages on iWeb and uploading to the server. For example: The homepage is created in Frontpage, but when someone clicks on a link it goes to a page that was created in iWeb. Is there any way to do this? If so, how? I'm pretty new to mac and haven't quite figured out all the capabilities yet.
    Thanks!

You can easily upload to an external server from iWeb. In 09 you have the option to use the new build in ftp or you still have the option of publishing to a folder and uploading using Cyberduck. Upload the site folder and the index.html file.
You can link other pages together on a server, however, having the home page in FrontPage could be a problem due to the index file - in iWeb this points to the home page of your site, so you might have to re-create your home page in iWeb instead. It would make it easier and then you can just upload together.

is there a way to use iweb to edit the web files i make in photoshop?
No, iweb cannot import or edit anything. You can try copy/pasting or drag/drop your stuff into an iweb template and see how it works.

  • Boot Camp, Partitioning, Windows (but which version?) and FrontPage

    Hi there,
I have an iMac purchased in August of 2009. I need to install Windows in order to use FrontPage for updating websites. I tried partitioning the iMac using Boot Camp, and I installed WindowsXP, SP2, 32 bit, but it was a copy of an original install disk. When installing XP, only one partition was recognized, and that partition wasn't labeled "Boot Camp." I then proceeded to have all kinds of problems, such as getting a black screen with a message reading insert bootable disk and press any key. Using the forums, I was able to solve that problem and all is well again, although still no Windows on my iMac!
I called customer care, and a very helpful senior technician (Amy) told me that my problem was that I was not using an original install disk. A copy of an original install disk would not work. She also said I should use a NON OEM version of a Windows XP, Vista or 7 install disk.
I have several questions that I'm hoping someone can help me with:
    1) *Has anyone else successfully used a copied install disk to install Windows on an iMac using Boot Camp?*
    2) *Has anyone else successfully used an OEM original install disk to install Windows on an iMac using Boot Camp?* I'm finding a lot of original Windows operating disks for purchase from places like Circuit City, etc., but everything is OEM.
    3) Should I just spend around $200 and buy Windows7 and go from there?
All I really need Windows on the iMac for is so that I can continue to use FrontPage for updating websites. I am willing to consider moving to a program that is Mac based. However, iWeb is way too basic, and DreamWeaver is way too complex (to say the least). *Does anyone have recommendations for Mac based software for website design and publishing?* I've looked at RapidWeaver, but I'm not sure this is quite robust enough for my needs.
    Thanks!

  • Photo album theme in iWeb that are the same as the old MobileMe wanted!?!

I really liked MobileMe and made many Albums with specially design firstside photos. That means they are square with four sides equally long. I put down quite a lot of work and now I would like to get hold on a simple, goodlooking theme for photoalbums with an index with square photoholders. That all I want.
Anybody seen anything like this? Could someone do it or tell how to do it??
    Many Thanx Anyhow!

Yes, but that´s the very problem - I have downloaded and I have 98 different themes of allready made photo albums for iWeb, and all of them got - as You say - a rectangle frame for the indexpage. That will crop the albums first picture in a very irritating way - specially since I remade all of them to fit in a square (like the MobileMe album had). They worked as a frontpage of the album, with text and sometimes with a suitable frame in the picture. In iWeb, they will all be cropped to a middle section of the square.
But in the iWeb´s albums next page - usually a kind of a lightboard, showing all pictures in that album - the square format are kept, likewise in following pages, showing a blowup of each photo.
I think now the only way to get the index to look nice with my square photos, will be for me to add marginals on each side on all the first´s to fill up a rectangle frame. But it´s impossible to do it unvisible. It will be noticed.

  • Can you edit a host's provided templates in iWeb?

I am looking at Hostgator to host my simple business site. They have a ton of business site templates, but apparently you need some software (like FrontPage or DreamWeaver)to edit them. Can you edit these templates using iWeb? Are there other hosts with templates that are compatible with iWeb?

Follow this link for iWeb templates:
    http://www.ipresentee.com/
If you're lucky they still have [a free template for Christmas|http://www.ipresentee.com/iPresentee/iPresentee-_ChristmasGift.html].
They (Hostgator) have a ton of business site templates
Download the templates you like and use the layout to re-create the page in iWeb. Drop the images on your iWeb canvas and rearrange them.

  • Firefox / Safari / IE - with iWeb productions: pros and cons

    Greetings!
I have started using iWeb (coming from FrontPage and a dab of Dreamweaver). Great, and, most importantly, very well integrated with the rest of Apple's programs and services and devices.
I have noticed that IE of course has trouble bringing up iWeb sites/pages: much of the time, IE just hangs, seemingly freezing the whole system (while posting "Done" on its bottom bar), and eventually breaks through and put up iWeb pages and sites quite truthfully. Firefox of course, which I have just installed in the Windows "side" of my MBPro/BootCamp system, blazes through iWed creations, just like Safari does. And, Firefox does not freeze. So, as I post my iWeb sites, I will include mention to install Firefox on Windows machines and just have it handy. Granted, most Win users WILL continue to use IE: so I must find ways to have my sites play in I decently.
RE: Firefox, I did notice that its screen fonts are NOT as sharp as IE's or Safari's same with Firefox screens in general: graphics OK, rest somewhat jagged/blurry) . Perhaps this does account for some of its speed. And even though I choose the option of letting sites exhibit their own fonts (rather a pre-selected one by Firefox - Time Roman usually), often Firefox picks its own font(s) to display text from sites. IE has better controls as to WHAT fonts will be displayed for a given site (i.e. the site's fonts, or IE's choice of fonts). So, Firefox's speed does NOT seem to come at no cost (I do like the sharpness of text in IE and Safari: anything blurry or stair-steppy makes my eyes very uncomfortable!)!
Another observation/question: as I finetune/experiment with a iWeb built site, I notice that text boxes that have been "imaged" by iWeb for one reason on another (example: text outlined, or underlined or made into hyperlinks) reproduces very faithfully what was in iWeb in the first place. Would that be then a good way to make sure that text looks exactly like it was intended and fits exactly right on the page? Or does "imaged" text produce larger (graphic) files than plain text (I suspect so).
This is an extraordinary forum indeed... With tools like iWeb and talented folks such as those sharing their amazing websites here, anything is possible!
    - Thanks for any comment and advice!

  • Can I merge an iWeb site into a regular site?

I have an existing site which was not made with iWeb. I've wanted to update it so I decided to use iWeb 08. I'm a bit concerned that when I publish the iWeb site into my old site that things will be written over. Will this be the case? I have a lot of other programs on my old site like php and mysql based things and I can't have those be over-written.
    Thanks,
    Tom

Thanks for the help. Here's the latest, I changed my Site name to Documents, so that it would match my webserver's information. (I changed my current Documents folder to Documents-bak so I wouldn't destroy it.) I published the new Documents iWeb along with some changes. After publishing, I took a folder with some pdfs in it from my backup and manually copied it to the new Documents folder. Checked the website and everything worked. Then I went back to iWeb, added a new Album, the published it. The folder I copied over was gone....poof!
This leads me to think I should have a splash page under my webserver root directory (/Documents/index.html) that links to /Documents/Site/index.html (with Site being my iWeb site) and leaving all the other items under /Documents. This would prevent the deletion of files that don't relate to iWeb since it is in a different directory.
Sorry if I'm being confusing, for the last 15 years I've built sites with things like Frontpage, Dreamweaver and other programs where I didn't have to worry about this stuff. I love iWeb because the site I'm talking about is my personal site with kids' pictures and it's pretty easy to use.
Question, say I add an album to my iWeb. Do I need to republish the WHOLE site again? I can't find a way to just publish changes rather than the whole site.
    Thanks - Tom

  • How do I create hidden folders in iweb

I switched to Mac from PC which means I lost FrontPage.  I have 6 small websites for my books and I need to rebuild these.  I don't have time to learn Dreamweaver at this time.  How do I create the essential hidden folders I need in iWeb to place the books for download?

    Thanks Kirk
I just wasted 6 hours before I realized this.  I'm so frustrated switching from PC to Mac.  The learning curve is tremendous and very frustrating. I've lost over a month of productivity due to little issues like this. Hopefully no one else will suffer.  Here's the remedy I came up with.
Basically iWeb cannot be used for anything other than basic vanity mini websites.  If you're doing ecommerce, need various folders or are using it to market products with downloads or anything needing protected, this is not the product to use.
For others with my issue, how do you update or change a FrontPage site when you no longer have it and no longer have a PC (most of the open source programs available for this only work on PC). My sites were built in FrontPage.  I needed to update and change them.  This is how to do it.
From the hosting panel with your hosting company use the FTP uploader. You need to save the entire FrontPage Website to your computer or an external harddrive. You can then open it and edit it in DreamWeaver. You may be able to do this with outher editors as well but this one I know you can. Dreamweaver can be rented on a month-to-month basis now and it does come with a 30 day free trial.
If you don't know how to do CSS style sheets, you will need to go into each open page, cut the text, past it into an rtf document in Mac.  Then, choose format and change it to 'plain text' and recopy and past into the open page of Dreamweaver.  This gets rid of the funky formatting FrontPage does and changes all the copy to <p> tags.  Then go into the code view in Dreamweaver and add the <h1> <h2> and other headings where needed. Dreamweaver does allow you to specify the attributes and create an in page CSS.
All of this is temporary but at least you'll be able to work on, edit and make changes even if you've lost access to a PC and FrontPage.  Eventually you will need to replace the entire FrontPage site

  • Published to folder iWeb site always using Times New Roman for every piece of text in published site and not showing the original text style used when building the site in iWeb.

    Dear All
Hello from rainy, windy and cold North East England! I need to ask for your help as I'm new to iMac and new to iWeb and it's frustrating the life out of me!
I'm just beginning to build a website for my business. Previously, I used Frontpage, but it's been that long since I used it - I've forgotten half of it and so, I'm using iWeb instead as it's silly to use an iMac for business but a PC laptop for the website design.
I've got the background image I want on the homepage (beautiful image of a rain forest - even if I do say so myself!) and I'm trying to enter a text box at the lower half of the screen, in the centre of the page saying 'click to enter'. I type in the text, I edit it so as to change it to the font style of my company (Gill sans MT) and then I publish the site to a folder so that I can see what it would look like when viewed via the internet. When I do this - the font changes size to a bog standard size of 'so small you need a magnifying glass to read it', it changes colour from black to purple (which looks disgusting) and it changes font style from Gill Sans MT to Times New Roman.
It doesn't matter if I delete the entire site and start again or delete the text box, and insert a new one. I've googled this subject until I'm blue in the face and I can't find an answer - can anyone suggest anything that will help?
    Many thanks for your help,
    Best wishes,
    Sean.

    Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
NOTE: If you don't use  Web Safe Fonts any computer that does not have that font installed  will substitute another font for it and change the look and feel of the web page.
So it's safest to use one of those web safe fonts.

  • Need help with moving sight over to Iweb

I would like to start using IWeb but I already have a website built that I used Frontpage to create. I want to make some changes to the sight so if I cannot convert some of the things I have, Im ok with adapting!
    www.DarnGoodSeasoning.com
1st question: (Visit site above) if you hover over the links on the left they turn green Can I do that in Iweb? I figured out how to do it with font but not pictures. I have the .gif of each in yellow and green.
2nd When I have created pages in the past www.HeyRobi.com It changes the name in the address bar to http://heyrobi.com/Mac/HeyRobi.html Call me petty but I want it to say HeyRobi.com can I fix that?
Thanks in advance for any help or tips. If there is any advice or tips how to improve the Darn Good site I am always up for constructive criticism. BTW I am dropping the frames!
    TIA HeyRobi

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. 1 - The rollover options are only available for text, not images.
2 - To get must HeyRobbi.com to show in the URL window you'll need to use standard domain name forwarding with masking. Then every page of your site will display only that. The downside to that is visitors will be able to only bookmark the first or entry page of your site. That may or may not be a problem for you. My tutorial site, toadstutorials.info, is setup with masking.
The following is a screenshot of how I setup my site with GoDaddy.com for forwarding and masking. Although every domain name provider is different your's will have a similar setup for you to set the masking for your domain name.

  • MobileMe gallery not showing in iweb

    Hi,
I seem to be having problems with the mobileme widget in Iweb.
I created a new album for my web page and when i pull the widget into iweb - it is only recognising one album. I have logged in and out of mobile me...iweb...tried the various suggestions from other forums and nothing seems to work...very frustrating.
I went onto the mobileme apple support where i thought there was 24/7 live support - but after trawling through different pages - couldn't find the option that would allow for live chat...not sure if that has been withdrawn now...but have not been impressed by how difficult it has been to get help by apple on this.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
