IWeb webhosting

Hello,
I really don't know anything about this stuff, but I want to use iWeb to make a website. The main things I'll use it for is storage and also want to make a small personal page/blog. I'd like to map my entire hard drive if possible, and have the files accessible from several computers. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good web host for this? Thanks!

HI Lance,
You can use iWeb to do your blog.
iWeb is used to make a website, not for storage. If you have .mac you can manually upload files to your .iDisk folder for storage. You now get 10 gigs of storage with .mac
The last part of your question might be answered by getting Leopard when it is available in October.

  • TS2167 iWeb: publish by ftp to GoDaddy webhosting service - get "publish error" at end of ftp session - always 1-2 files not successfully transferred - Why?

Why do I get message "Publish error There was an error communicating with the server.  Try again later, or check with your service provider" when i publish websites to webhosting service (GoDaddy.com) from iWeb 3.0.4  even though most webpages have been transferred and are marked blue?   There are always a few pages marked red after each ftp transfer?   It seems that the ftp session is terminated by web hosting service too fast for iWeb 3.0.4. to register that files have been transferred successfully.  When I check pages marked red in iWeb with browser, they are often available and functioning.     I have to add many extra webpages (which I do not want) to get iWeb to register all my pages as transferred (marked blue).  If I do not do this, all pages on website are marked "red" after I close iWeb and restart it.   This means that everytime i make one little change to one page on a website of 8-10 Gigabytes,  I often have to republish the entire site!
I think (without understanding enough/anything about ftp protocolls and termination negotiations) that iWeb is not getting enough time at end of each ftp session to register that all the pages have in fact been transferred successfully.   Could this be the explanation?  If so, how do I "slow down" the termination of ftp session by my web hosting service GoDaddy so that iWeb 3.0.4 can see that all files have been successfully transferred and therefore should be marked blue?

You're rather prone to problems, aren't you. It's not the first time.

And since you do not use iWeb's ftp, but publish to a folder, iWeb's job is done.
You are now 100 percent responsible for your actions.
Upload the files properly. And if you're not blind visually challenged, you can see for yourself where the files are on the server. No need for GoDaddy eyes.
And why not use iWeb's FTP. Then at least you eliminate the human error.
And no, GoDaddy won't have to help you with iWeb, because there's nothing to fix.
And practice FTP first on your computer :

  • Working with iweb and ATT webhosting

I made my business website on iweb and downloaded it through FTP to my att webhosting site because it was simple and easy through iweb's step by step process.
I'm new at website building and don't even understand the lingo when trying to read these blogs for more insight.
I want to build beyond the basics such as adding meta tags and checking my site hits but I'm not sure if I do it through my webhosting account or through iweb.
Anyone know where to go to find help how to work these two programs together?
Apple tech only help with iweb and most of the ATT tech don't know how to work iweb so it's hit or miss when talking to them depending on who answers your call.

To add meta tags to your site you need to do this in your site directly, but your published site so that it is added to the html code.
Download a programme called iWebSEO. Go to iWeb and publish your site to a local folder and then open your published site with iWebSEO and add the tags, Google analytics etc., and anything else you want. Then use either iWebSEO to upload to your server or use a dedicated ftp client such as Cyberduck to do this - it can be downloaded for free from the internet.
You can easily place a hit counter on your site by inserting the code into an html snippet on your site. Do a Google search for hit counters and you will have lots of choices.

  • Blogs, webhosts and IWeb 09

    Hello All,
I have a website hosted on Host Papa. I use a domain name (.com) that I pay for and I use iWeb 09. I've been using that for about a year now and all is good.
Now I have registered a second .com name and I want to build a second website. On this second website I want to have a blog. If I use iWeb 09 and my current host is it true that every time I add a new entry to my blog I have to update the entire site? Is it easier to use a MM account? Can I have my Host Papa site and another site on MM?
Which method is better or faster?
    Thanks,
    Mike

If I make my second site on iWeb 09 can I then put a link on that site for my blog on another site (so you would just click on it and it would take you to the other site like WordPress)?
Mike ~ Yes, see this Apple doc: _Creating hyperlinks_. Also, Posterous has a special blog widget you can probably add to your iWeb site via iWeb's +HTML Snippet+ window — see HERE.

What is the best or some of the best free blog sites?
I don't know about being "the best", but for simplicity Posterous is hard to beat and if you want more features such as TABS, there's WordPress.
    Michael Ryan. wrote:
I also want to put a podcast link on my blog site as well...how easy or hard is that to do?
I think a podcast link is just a URL, so I suppose it's as easy as setting up a hyperlink — _this article_ shows examples of podcast URLs.

  • Uploading iWeb to different webhosting sites.

I purchased some webhosting space a while back and I was wandering if it's possible to use the publish to folder option and upload the site to another webhost so I could access it with my domain name. -- Thanks! Mike

    file
    publish to a folder
and then u can use an FTP such as cyberduck

  • IWeb files lost after HD replacement?

First off, I'm $tuck with very old HW/SW, per the equipment profile below. Cannot advance beyond my current iLife 08.
Recently replaced a failing internal hard drive (6 yrs old), and did a clean install of software, except for iWeb which I backed up multiple times. I thought I had adequately archived the iWeb folder on externals. Afterwards I launched iWeb, and got a prompt to re-install iLife 08. After I did that, it wasn't a surprise to me to see that the website I'd created years ago was no longer accessible on my Mac (unless it's hidden somewhere; I am NOT iWeb-savvy).
The good news is that the webhost that I'm using after the closure of MobileMe has the current file captured, and is showing properly online.
But it appears that if it ever needs editing, I'll have to build it all over again from scratch.
    Am I assessing this correctly?
I'm willing to accept that I've botched the capture of my website, but I wonder if this was even doable at all? If only for information, what could I have done differently to retain the website for editing, in the midst of a hard drive replacement?
Or is it actually still possible to retrieve it as it stands?
    Thanks in advance.

To find an iWeb domain file:
First you need to find the file where iWeb stores its information. iWeb stores its information in a file (or package) called Domain.sites2 (by default but can be changed). Note that the extension .sites (iWeb 1.0) or .sites2 (iWeb  2.0 and 3.0) may be hidden, hence it could also be called Domain only.
To find a Domain file it's best to use a freeware application called Find any File since Spotlight doesn't search everywhere. Once you downloaded and installed the application type ".sites" (without quotes) into the search field of Find File and it will list all the Domain files of all iWeb versions on your computer.

  • How do I resize/change resolution of photos from iPhoto when used in iWeb

I am shooting with a 7.1 Mega Pixel Canon to get enough quality to crop and print high quality pictures of my baby daughter and her adventures in the world.
I have a website up made with iWeb, but when I select the photos in iPhoto and go Share / Sent to iWeb / photo page - I get a nice layout of the photos but at full resolution when the thumbnails are selected or the slide show is run. Although nice and sharp, this is a pain for anyone looking at the site even with high speed access.
There must be some way to resize photos, but I have yet to figure that out with iPhoto, let alone iWeb. And as one photo at a time is a pain, there must also be a way to rescale a whole selection of photos that I want to use for a page - say her Disneyworld trip. I can't be the first person to run into this, but I have not found anything out there to point me in the right direction.
Ideally I wold like to create a resized set from the originals - so I can still print and crop in high qulity. I also am not really sure what resolution would be best or easy viewing and download - that's probably subjective. 1200x800 comes to mind but I am open to suggestions.
Perhaps resize is not the right term - changing resolution is probably more accurate, but there too I have not found an answer.
    Appreciate the help and suggestions.

    dan28088,
Tried your site on two different browsers, using highspeed broadband; the site is, indeed, extaordinarily slow. We can dissect the thing down to the last file, but it won't change anything, as far as I can see. If it were me, I would host the site on another server. The .Mac servers are just plain slow, period. I think that is the primary problem here. Just my opinion, others may disagree.
I created a new site this past weekend for a new project, and published it to .Mac. It contains a lot of jpeg files in slideshows (along with the usual png suspects!) . After reviewing it a few times, and not being satisfied with page-load speeds, I published to a folder and uploaded the site to space on 1&1 WebHosting.
The page-load speeds TRIPLED. That's right...3X as fast page-load speeds. Even large, linked to files, 3MB+, load within a reasonable amount of time. (seconds)
I still will keep a .Mac subscription, as I like and use all of the other features of the iDisk. But for serious website hosting, I think you will be better 'served' with a remote host. Your money with .Mac is certainly not wasted; the syncing services and other features of iDisk space that integrate with your local files are well worth the yearly fee. Again, only one user's opinion, based on experience.

  • I can't publish to iWeb, it doesn't seem to be able to login to my icloud account. any ideas?

I've been trying to publish a site on iweb. It seems that iweb is unable to sign in to my icloud account. I push the publish to mobile me tab, push the sign into your account tab,( already a member). I get the barbers pole for 30 seconds or so, and then, nothing happens.  Any ideas anyone?

MobileMe closed in July last year.
    iCloud does not offer webhosting.
You have to find a webhost.
It's been discussed for the past 2 years in this forum, the MMe forum and all over the planet.
    Browse this forum.
    In short :
    Find a webhoster.
And since you use iWeb 08, publish to a folder and use an FTP app to put the files on the server.

  • Iweb was not publishing changes to my personal domain name, AND now it won't let me publish at all!

Hi, i am new to the apple community so bare with me whilst i struggle to explain...
I recently purchased a hosting site through netregistry.net.  www.toyboxtherapies.com.au I spoke to them to allow the changes to the CNAME through their site. They did this for me. Once they did this my original 3 page site that I had published to mobileme came up.
When i added changes to the site, none of them were published even though iweb said they had been. I gave the site 48 hours (well, i gave them a week) to update the changes.
I went to double check today and now iweb wont let me publish to my domain name at all, it just lists File>Set up personal domain on mobile me.
When I log into mobile me my domain name is there. I have tried removing t and setting it up again, but nothing is happening with iweeb. Still the same problem.
Please help! I am trying to get this business off the ground and its all very frustrating!

This is what I see in a Lookup :
    ; <<>> DiG 9.6-ESV-R4-P3 <<>> www.toyboxtherapies.com.au cname +multiline +nocomments +nocmd +noquestion +nostats +search
    ;; global options: +cmd
    www.toyboxtherapies.com.au. 3600 IN CNAME web.me.com.
It means that the CNAME record points to MobileMe.
So go where you manage your domain and delete the CNAME record and change the  A-record(s) to point to your new webhost.
It takes some time for the changes to propagate thru the internet. A minimum of 20 minutes.
Note that when you publish to MobileMe, iWeb recieves the domainname information from the MobileMe server. Only when you publish elsewhere you have to enter the domainname. But if you do not change the settings where you host your domainname, it still directs to MMe. But that's beyond iWeb.

  • Having a hard time selecting an iWeb website host

Now that MobileMe is gone and my website is down (yes, i missed the memo)... im researching hosts and having a hard time choosing.
I would like unlimited storage as I have a lot of photos on my site.
RAGE sounds good but seems pricey.
I'm looking for a company familiar w/iWeb so that if there are any issues I have some assistance.
I have searched the community and googled and keep getting just a few answers.  Nothing that really gives me a solid sense about the companies.  And it seems that RAGE does a lot of self promotion posing as customer which seems a bit sketchy.  I might be completely wrong but thats the sense Im getting from the videos and results I'm finding.
Is there a site that gives solid reviews of the web hosting companies?
Where have people here moved their iWeb website to?
    Thanks

I have been using IX Webhosting for about 4 years with little to no problems "usually the problem was something I did" and they have been quick to solve any issue I have come across.
As far as the unlimited is concerned they just do not set any pre-determined space or bandwidth.
I have several websites hosted on my hosting plan ( I am currently using the expert plan ) and haven't ran into any space issues here is my bandwidth (traffic) & disk space usage.

Can anyone help me with this? When I go to the folder on my homepage and open index file, it shows perfect. so something goes wrong when I upload to ftp.

  • Can't get rid of stock photo when using iWeb but publishing to non-MobileMe

On one of my pages I have a vertical column of photos with my photos from iPhoto that I dragged and dropped into iWeb. The page was originally based on an iWeb template, though I cannot remember which one.
The problem I am having is that the stock photo sometimes shows up when I publish the website - even though I have dropped a photo in the space, saved it and re-published it. I have gone into the files and deleted the stock photo and I even went to my webhost and deleted the stupid thing there as well. Regardless, the #*!!%@ thing keeps showing up.
I have reloaded the page to my webhost multiple times. I had the same problem a day or two ago and eventually the stock photo stopped showing up, but I have no idea what kind of hocus pocus made it finally disappear and the correct photo show in its place.
    Any ideas?
    thanks,
    roxpat

It is apparently an iWeb issue. In the template that I used, I guess some aspects are just "in there" and are not able to be removed.
I ultimately removed all of the photos from the page since they had originally started as "drops" into the placeholders and put my photos in manually (not a big deal, of course). I saved it and "published it" to the folder. . .and there was that stupid photo again. I yanked the photo and put it in the trash and went to my webhost and removed the same photo. . .and finally the stock photo went away.
Every time I update the site (or those pages, anyway), I have to go in and remove that #%^#^& photo.
The moral of the story is that I need to just rebuild the page from scratch - without a template. It shouldn't be too hard, but it's more effort than I want to exert at this point

  • IWeb Application changes in domain

For the last 2 years going on 3, I have used a hosting sight that published results required republishing at different times. I always found a size related to the domain that changed. I use a flash drive to copy and save the domain after its published. Means and way to republish any issues that might show up. But the flash drive is safe and secured.
Recent events for searched out the results for this publishing, concern it was Looking different? A difference from 448. MB that was 449.6 MB The telling comes in the next look at the Domain.
Happens that I have a original HD incased and with a operating system that works and was used for this publishing. So I have a situation that is true to the Web Published size and date. And so is the Flash Drive. Mt. Lion 10.8.5 any ideas?
A little peace of new to go along with this. Kaspersky had or still does a claim that they worked with Apple to make a product that was in the Apple Store, as the internet sight claimed. Call to Apple and I came to find that there is no application on any Apple store sight for use, or purchase? WOW!

Let me see if I understand you...
You created a website with iWeb?
The site data is on multiple local drives (±448MB)?
You 'published' your site to your WebHost's server using iWeb?
The "filesize" reported from your Host is ±449.6MB (a difference of ±1.6MB)?
You question is "Why the difference in size?"
I would believe my Mac before I would believe a "Report" from your Host... there may be some extra data placed there BY the Host - such as PHP Server. WebMail Server, SQL Server, etc.

  • Switch from iWeb to WordPress?

A week ago I asked about alternatives to iWeb for blogging on this forum.
One suggestion received from Roddy was to consider software created by
    RageSW called iWeb to WordPress.
I did explore this and chose to try it.
Specifically, I paid $120 for one year's webhosting services.
This included provision of a domain and installation of WordPress
    at my new website.
My reaction so far is mixed for the following reasons:
    1. My current weblog, a health-related blog, consists of a welcome page,
which is fixed, and four pages on which I place posts to diverse audiences
every few months as appropriate to the on-going health story.
    2. In WordPress terms, these four pages are considered four separate blogs.
    3. When iWebtoWrdPrs is used on the files published to a local folder, they
must be broken into four separate blogs. The result was that all 28 posts
from my four pages wound up in one WrdPrs blog.
    4. To separate these back into "four groups", I chose the names of my iWeb
pages to create four WordPress "categories", which can be displayed in the
blog page sidebar. Then, I assigned each post to its related category.
I consider this marginally satisfactory and certainly neither elegant, nor
    user-friendly.
    5. The navigation menu at the top of the page looks like the one iWeb
produces, but it accommodates several fixed pages and one blog page
    with all the posts. This seems to make sense for commercial entities;
for me it seems clumsy and rigid.
    6. To use the software one must be using iWeb3.0.x.
    7. On the plus side, the staff at RageSW have been very responsive and
    helpful.
In the short term I will continue using iWeb; my MobileMe subscription
runs thru next June. RageSW also offers hosting for iWeb publishing if you
want to experiment with your own domain. There are many tutorials on
WordPress available on-line and a good support community. Maybe I'll find
a satisfactory way to implement my blog in WordPress down the road.

Yes, if you have purchased both a domain name and hosting, then it is your server - so I have a domain name registered with hosting space from HostExcellence and that is my server space.
WordPress.org can only be loaded onto a server/hosting space as it is seen as one of the Content Management Systems's similar to Joomla and Drupal.  For this you need server space and a database and most hosting companies have automatic loading of something like WordPress.org onto the sever - you just click on install and it will all be loaded onto the server for you along with the database needed.
The difference between the WordPress.org is that as it is installed directly on your server, then it is linked directly to your own domain name so the url will be http://www.domain.com/Blog or http://www.domain.com/WordPress. The last name depends on how you choose to install it on your sever.  I have 2 blogs using WordPress.org on my server and the domain names for both are http://www.domain.com/Blog.
With my other host, I wanted to create the whole website using WordPress, so I installed WordPress directly onto the server, so now, when you enter my domain name direclty the whole WordPress site comes up.
WordPress.org has more templates available for it and you can customise it a little more, but the great thing is that it is installed on your server directly, so no messing around with the url http://www.name.wordpress.com. It is on your own server rather than that of WordPress.

  • I need an ftp for my iweb

I am so upset with apple for not providing an easier way to transfer from mobile me gallery and iweb.
I use iweb for my business for several years and I really don't have time to learn computer specifications but I guess I have to now.
