IWeb wish-list (maybe in iLife '07)

The whole iLife suite is definitely a bargain for what you get. Having said that, I still have a wish-list for iWeb. If I missed some of the capabilities listed below, I'd love to hear from anyone, but these are a few of the things I hope to see in iWeb '07. If you've got more, bring 'em on. I'm going to send my list to Apple using the "Provide iWeb Feedback" menu. Who knows? You can't score if you don't shoot!
My iWeb wish-list:
1. Support for tables.
2. Support for bookmarks within pages.
3. Better control of image resolution when importing from iPhoto.
4. Ability to import and post calendars from iCal (I was a little surprised this didn't make it into the 1.0 release). You should even be able to have your site dynamically link to a calendar that you've synchronized with your .mac account.
5. Ability to view page source and hand-code HTML on your pages.
6. FTP support.
7. Vertical navigation bars.
8. Nesting of pages in the navigation structure beyond just 2-deep.
9. Automated page elements like a text field that updates with today's date when you change the text on the page. Like the text you see at the bottom of pages that reads, "This page last updated on XX/XX/XX"
10. Content height and width management by percentage or pixels (currently it's only pixels). By percentage, the page will dynamically adjust height and width as users grow or shrink the sizes of their browser windows.
11. Ability to update the themes of sites without having to "start over."
12. Hyperlink validation for your entire site - verify there are no broken links. This is especially useful for external links.
13. More control over modifying themes.
14. Ability to create new themes.
14. Better control over navigation menus (ability to view links as buttons or text; change fonts/font size without having to apply a different theme, etc.)
15. Others?

Just a few additions and comments:
. Ability to view page source and hand-code HTML on
your pages.
php support would be cool too
and the ability to add custom CSS
6. FTP support.
where only updated pages are uploaded, and not the entire site
It should be possible to chose if iWeb should run in "beginner" or "advanced" mode. In the adv you should be able to chose if you want to include the fancy slideshow and hit counters, etc to an external website
commenting on the blogs is a must too. Blogs seem like a waste to me if no one can comment on the entries.
I would also like to see "cleaner" coding, but it's no biggy, would just make it easier to modify coding!
Oh, and if you hard-code something, then iWeb needs to leave it alone. Can't have iweb overwrite changes you've made everytime you change something in iweb and re-upload!!
Now some of you might notice that I only have iLife '05, so how can I have all this suggestions? Just based upon the limitations I've read about. If apple implement a few of these changes to iWeb, I might just invest in a new iLife package.
I've made websites for a long time, and I must admit I would love to be able to use iWeb to design my webpages. It just needs to be a bit more flexible
thanks for taking the iniativ, Peter!

  • My iWeb Wish List for '07

Just sent the following to Apple's iWeb Feedback; figured I'd post it here as well just for the heck of it.
Some of these requests may apply only to my particular -- some would say peculiar -- workflow, but I suspect there are at least a couple which other user's might share.
    (using iWeb 1.1.2 under OX X 10.4.8)
    One User's iWeb Wish List:
    1) Option to have Comments included in Captions for online albums.
When Importing pics from iPhoto, there should be four checkboxes:
one for Image Name (i.e. Title),
    one for Date,
    one for Time,
    and especially one for Comments!
-- allowing the user to determine which of those four bits of iPhoto info are included in the Captions for any kind of online album. It's crazy that right now I can't put up an iWeb photo page that automatically includes the Comments I've taken the time to enter in iPhoto as part of that photo's Caption online.
If iWeb wants to claim true integration with iPhoto, then this feature seems like a pre-version 1 no-brainer.
    2) "Open in New Window?" option for Hyperlinks.
When designating some text or a picture as a link, PLEASE give us the option to make that link one that will open in the browser's current page (the default), OR one that will open in a NEW PAGE.
That's a basic design choice which the creator of any web page should be allowed to make.
(At least with Homepage I was able to fool it by adding
    " target="_blank
to the URL I was entering, making Hompage think the addition was actually part of the URL, but causing any browser to see it as the HTML command to open the preceding link in a new window. Unfortunately I can't seem to get this trick to work in iWeb -- would love it if someone could tell me why.)
    3) User-configuarable slideshows.
When I first started using iWeb, and saw how configurable the pages themselves were, I naturally searched for the Slideshow options. Just basic stuff, like the seconds per-slide duration; the kinds of transitions; the default to change slides manually or automatically; whether to have the controls and the top row of thumbs always visible or show only when you mouse over them; whether to use the reflection effect; what color background to use; the image display size -- that kind of thing. (The kind of control offered in the shareware program ShutterBug, for example.)
You already know what I found: zilch. It almost feels like two different teams developed the two parts of the program (the wonderfully-customizable Page Creator vs. the take-it-or-leave-it Slideshow) -- or maybe they just ran out of time before the iLife '06 release, and had to throw in the Slideshow part before it was ready.
    4) Previewable Slideshows
And then I find that not only can I not customize the Slideshow in any way, I can't even preview it within the app itself -- I have to publish the page first, then "preview" it in a browser. This whole section of the iWeb app is definitely not ready for prime time.
    5) More web viewing options.
The viewer of my iWeb photo page should be able to click on a thumbnail and have it open as either an image in its own window, OR (as is the case in HomePage) as the first frame in a slideshow.
And even when it opens as an image in a separate window, there should still be the basic <-PREV and NEXT-> buttons to allow the viewer to keep looking at the full-sized images without having to close each window and then double-click on the next thumbnail.
    6) Automatic page length extension.
Would be a nice user pref to have the page height automatically adjust as new content is added, or as pix are dragged down past the current bottom of page.
    7) Space-saving Import options.
In order to conserve space on our .Mac accounts, and make for better downloading times of the photo page itself, iWeb needs to offer several Import options once the desired pics from an iPhoto Library (or just from a Finder folder) have been selected:
Let users pick whether the photos will be uploaded full-size, or automatically reduced to a user-definable maximum height and/or width.
And make sure to also have (perhaps under an Advanced tab) a sliding scale of jpg quality, with an instant feedback showing what the total file size will be at that particular setting.
These size and quality parameters should be applicable either to individual files, or to the entire Import as a whole.
    8) Tell us the URLs.
Simply mousing over a page or site name in the Site Organizer pane (or right-clicking on same), should reveal its full URL as currently published, and allow you to easily copy that URL to the Clipboard (and in turn Paste that URL into a document or an e-mail).
I know the iWeb URLs all follow the same naming pattern, but why not make it easier for us to access and Copy/Paste those URLs, instead of having to "figure them out"?
    9) Make the Text Boxes easier to see and to move.
Right now a newly-inserted Text Box is virtually invisible, and until you actually type some text into it it's bloody hard to grab a hold of.
I'm hoping most of these features have already been incorporated into the next release of iWeb -- and if not, that you'll give serious consideration to implementing all of them as soon as possible. Your users will thank you!

This is a user forum, so we can't help with this! You
can provide iWeb feedback in the File menu of the app.
Indeed -- hence the very first line of my post:
"Just sent the following to Apple's iWeb Feedback; figured I'd post it here as well just for the heck of it..."
Also why I didn't post it as a Question seeking help. Nevertheless, thanks for pointing me both to your site and the RowanCottage one. I'll check out all the iWeb tips on both.
    Meanwhile...
    2) "Open in New Window?" option for Hyperlinks.
    Here's how to do it:
    http://web.mac.com/varkgirl/iWeb/Varkgirl/Open%20links
    %20in%20new%20window.html
Let's hope that any of these workarounds will soon be a thing of the past. I have to believe that the iWeb team has realized by now that giving the user (i.e. the iWeb page creator) the option to designate how each and every link should open (same page or new page) is such a basic, obvious feature that it MUST already be implemented in the next iWeb, and is only awaiting the release of iLife '07 -- or whatever the next iLife suite will be called.
    6) Automatic page length extension.
Would be a nice user pref to have the page height
automatically adjust as new content is added, or as
pix are dragged down past the current bottom of
    page.
    Um, it does this already.
Then I must be doing something very wrong. I just tried again -- grabbed a graphic, dragged it down to the bottom of the page so that half of it was now out of site, let go and voila -- nothing. "Content Height" in the Page Inspector didn't change one pixel.
Even the "Creative" at the downtown Toronto Apple Store -- who I happened to see giving an iWeb demo/workshop the other day -- said the only way to extend the page length was to add a larger value to the Content Height box in the Inspector.
But I'd still love to know if there's a more intuitive, hands-on kind of way.
    9) Make the Text Boxes easier to see and to move.
Turn on "Show Layout" in the View menu
I already did. My point was that even with "Show Layout" on, the faint grey text box that first appears is often hard to see, especially against certain backgrounds. Interestingly, that same Apple Store staffer made the exact same observation (with no prompting from me), and also commented on how the initial blank text box was also tricky to grab and reposition -- he said he always just types some random garbage text first, THEN moves the now much more easily grabbable text box to where he wants it on the page.
Anyway, I felt at least a little vindicated to hear an Apple frontline employee share a couple of the same little annoyances that had been bugging me just a few days earlier!
    Cheers,
    John Bertram

  • IWeb 2.0 Wish List

Thought it might be interesting to see what you guys would want in iWeb 2.0. Hopefully some Apple person will read this. Here are a few of my wishes...
Better photo galleries, wysiwyg flash maybe?
    Form maker
Ability to publish just the changes and save backups
    Better HTML
HTML capable pages, like an "insert code here" box
    Meta tag generator
Better compression of images, site optimizer...
    Portable blog
    Mouseovers/Hover, drop down menus
      Mac OS X (10.4.8)   http://www.markmcleod.net

I really like the wish list of Mark Mcloed. I will try to expand it with my own.
    - A search field for the whole site, not just blog.
    - A logo that says "iChat Me". It would indicate if I am online or not (like we can do with Skype)
    - iChat Group. A small Java iChat client (for text at least) than logged user could start to participate in a multi user discussion. An easy "press here" button would start the iChat Java Client and automaticaly log them on my small ichat network.
    - Statisticts like the one I actually get from http://www.statcounter.com/ but not just from 100 reaader.
    - Map of where reader come from. I know it can be done but I prefer when the thing I use often to be include in iWeb directly.
    - A RSS that would indicate a modification anywhere on the website not just in the blog.
    - Better management of multiple WebSite. A way to open and close many different web site. I had a Large section on Karting (couple of hundred meg) than did not need upgrade. Because of many bug with the publish to Mac I had to do a lot of Publish All including this large website that did not need any updating.
    - A better organisation inside the Domain file. Maybe structure like the web site itself.
    - Blog a little more flexible: Information on the side, etc...
    - A way to update from any web browser.
    and more

  • My iPhoto WIsh List for '07

Just sent the following to Apple's iPhoto Feedback; figured I'd post same here just for the heck of it. Many of these feature requests might only apply to my particular (and peculiar?) workflow, but I suspect at least a few of them might strike an empathetic chord...
    One User's iPhoto Wish List:
Your first priority is to contact the creators of iPhoto Diet and iPhoto Library Manager, pay them lots of money for their work, and then incorporate all the features of their shareware apps into iPhoto itself.
This would add to iPhoto features it should have had for a long time now, including:
    1) An option to delete unrotated originals.
It's silly to take up space on a hard drive with copies of files whose only difference is that one is correctly rotated and the other is not. Give us the choice to dispense with the unrotated ones.
    2) An option to delete the originals for any selected file(s).
I know that "always keeping a copy of the original" is a sacred cornerstone of the iPhoto app, but SOMETIMES, after I've edited, resized, or done whatever to a given file, I feel I've created the new master file, and I truly really honestly would like the ability to just dispose of the now redundant original and get the space back on my hard drive.
(If this sounds like giving the user of a "consumer app" too much control, by all means bury this kind of option behind all the Advanced Tabs and all the Warning Dialogs you want -- but please at least give us the option to manage what we ultimately keep or don't keep in our iPhoto Libraries.)
    3) Ways to manage multiple libraries on multiple machines with multiple users.
I have a 12GB (and growing) iPhoto Library on my G5 PowerMac. My wife's G5 iMac has a subset of that Library (about half the size), with the same Roll designations, Comments info, and Keyword assignments, along with some of the same Albums plus some unique Albums. I use iPhoto Library Manager to do this, but I should be able to do it using iPhoto itself.
Especially since the introduction of OS X, Apple has encouraged the notion of multiple users on multiple Macs. iPhoto needs to embrace that world view, and make the sharing and management of multiple iPhoto Libraries, even different versions of the same Library on different machines, a fluid, user-friendly, and fully-integrated process. For instance, I should be able to select which images, Rolls, and/or Albums from my Library get copied to my wife's machine (with all Comments, Roll info and Keywords intact) -- AND whether or not those copies include the corresponding original files or not.
    Other features iPhoto needs:
    4) Ability to correct and change the actual EXIF date/time info.
One example: It is extremely common to get jpegs from other users who haven't bothered to correctly set the date/time menu on their digital cameras. You want to correct that info, but if you do that in iPhoto's Info pane, and then Export that image and in turn Import it into another iPhoto Library, the Date/Time reverts back to the original INCORRECT setting. This is really annoying, and I feel like it's insulting my intelligence. (When I change the date of a photo, THAT'S the date I should now be able to search for by using the calendar mode, NOT its incorrect "creation" date.)
The current workaround of having to export the file, use another app like Graphic Converter to really change the exif data, then re-import into iPhoto (after first deleting the originals), then recreate all your Comments and Album arrangements, is clumsy, time-consuming, and when you think about it, absurd.
PLEASE consider a User Pref to the effect of "Changing Date/Time info changes original exif data as well"? You could have it unchecked as the default; you could have all sorts of "do you really want to do that?" warnings pop up when a user does check it -- but please just give us the option!
    5) Better User Pref options.
Give us the choice to NOT create a dupe original when a file is viewed in an external editor but no changes are made; likewise when just rotating an image within iPhoto.
    6) Better sorting/display options.
I display my library in Rolls (each Roll being pictures taken on a particular day or at a particular event). I'd like the ability to designate how files are sorted within a particular Roll -- the pictures in some Rolls sorted by file name, the pictures in other Rolls sorted by Date & Time.
Would also like to be able to insert dividers in the Source pane to separate some of my albums into different groups, as well as a way to set bookmarks or placeholders within a Library, as a quick shortcut to an often-viewed section for example.
    7) More e-mail attachment options.
Within each of the Small, Medium, Large, and Actual Size choices, there should also be (perhaps under an Advanced tab) a sliding scale of jpg quality, with an instant feedback showing what the total file size will be at that particular setting.
Also, there should be four checkboxes: one for Image Name, one for Date, one for Time, and especially one for Comments -- allowing the user to determine which of those four bits of iPhoto info are included in the e-mail attachment along with the image itself.
    8) Option to have Comments included in Captions for online albums.
Those same four checkboxes also need to be options for any kind online album posting. It's crazy that right now I can't put up an iWeb photo page that automatically includes the Comments I've taken the time to enter in iPhoto as part of that photo's Caption online.
    9) Option to show file extension in Title
Including or not including the .jpg or .psd or .gif extension is an option when Exporting a file; why not when displaying it as well?
    10) Option to "show all layers" of an imported Photoshop file.
Or any kind of layered file which has been imported into the iPhoto Library.
    11) Ability to enter partial dates.
It often happens when you import an older scanned photo into your library (or even when you're just sent a recent photo from a friend), you don't know know the exact date and/or time the picture was originally taken. iPhoto really needs a way to enter partial, approximate or estimated dates -- just the month/year without a specific day, for example -- both in the Info pane AND in Batch Change mode.
(Also wouldn't mind a user pref option to display the Time without the seconds.)
    12) Ability to Import pictures into an already selected Roll.
There are many times when I'd like to be able to select a particular Roll, then Import some new pics directly into that Roll -- rather than doing the Import, then having to drag the images sometimes several months back in time to drop them into the correct Roll.
    13) Ability to delete files from an Album and the Library simultaneously.
This would be some sort of Option-Delete command, where a selected image being viewed in a particular Album is ALSO removed and sent to the Trash from the Library as well -- with the appropriate warning dialog, of course.
    14) Built-in support for doing INCREMENTAL back-ups of either your entire Library -- or only the files from selected Albums -- to another hard drive.
I hope that most of these features have already been incorporated into the next release of iPhoto -- and if not, that you'll give serious consideration to implementing them as soon as possible. Your users will thank you.
    John Bertram
    Toronto

should add ability to scan directly to iphoto.
How would I give this wish to apple?
Note that under the Application Menu (in other words, in iPhoto under the bold Menu item called "iPhoto", right next to the blue Apple icon), there's a selection called Provide iPhoto Feedback. Clicking on that opens your default browser (if it's not already open), and sends you to the specific Apple webpage set up to receive user suggestions for that particular app.
In this case, the URL is the one "Old Toad" mentioned in his post:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
Many of the major Apple apps have this direct menu link; for others you can just go to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and navigate from there.
They claim to actually pay attention to this kind of user input; and I've heard people say it actually does affect how the development and implementation of new features get prioritized.
    Let's hope so, anyway.

i am trying to purchase many songs at one time. i have added all songs to wish list , now to purchase it will only let me  do one at a time  please advise how i can purchase more than one at a time

There used to be a 'buy all' button on the wish list screen but for some reason that has been removed from the current version of iTunes so you will need to buy each item individually. You can try leaving feedback for Apple and maybe it'll be added back in a future update : http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

  • Shopping Cart/Wish List

I have been a long time iTunes store shopper, and traditionally I've always looked forward to the updates, but one of the changes in the most recent version really irks me. I absolutely cannot stand the new wish list feature. In my opinion, it's a buggier, worse version of the shopping cart, and I seriously wish they would just bring the old one back.
But, since that probably isn't going to happen, I have some questions in hopes of making the new "feature" a little easier to deal with:
    1) Is there any way to make the wish list sort by genre? It used to be really nice with the shopping cart when I could sort through whatever music I had in it by the kind of music I was in the mood for. This is one of many features which, as far as I can tell, is gone.
    2) Is there any way to make it so the wish-list page doesn't reset each time you buy a song? Every time I buy a song, the page refreshes back to the top of the page with all my previous sorting set back to default. This is HIGHLY annoying when I want to buy more than one song, and I have to re-search for the next one after buying the first.
    3) Is there any way to see all your wish-list music on one page rather than having to sort through the 4-5 pages I currently have?
I really appreciate what Apple was trying to do with the Wish List, but unless I'm missing something, they took out more features than they added. Simple ones that make a big difference. I think they aimed it more for people who want to go through and pick a lot of music, and then buy it all at once. They took out a lot of what made large shopping carts easy and quick to navigate and buy from. I for one used the shopping cart more as a place to store all the music I EVENTUALLY wanted to buy rather than a more immediate place to chuck my upcoming purchases. Every time I saw a song on iTunes that I liked, regardless of my immediate intent of buying it, it went in the shopping cart. I may not get to it for months, but it would stay there, and I could get to it easily when I wanted to.
I highly doubt I'm the only person who used it like that, and for those of us who did, I think the wish-list is a crappy alternative.

Well after my post on this very issue was removed (because it was deemed more feedback than a question - which I'm fine with), it would likely have helped.
As far as I can tell, there is only ONE WAY to get to your shopping cart, er, wish list.
    1) Login
    2) On the left bar (the section where your shopping cart used to be, along with your playlists), you have to click on iTunes Store. You'll see your Wish List in the Quick Links section...
Thats it. Clicking anywhere else, like the 'Home' link or whatever, will not help you...if this is all too crazy, yeah, it is. I mean, making it difficult to purchase sounds really, um, crazy, particularly if you shop by shopping cart - which means you actually spend money on more music than "single buy". Ugh!
On the other question on how to "Add to Wish List". In the section where songs are listed (with fixed sized columns that you can't adjust in this version - had to rub that in), you'll see a button to "BUY SONG". To the right of that text is an arrow (in the button, not another column) that if clicked gives you more options. One of them is to add to your wish list. Can't tell if the fixed sized columns are also affecting your view (maybe you're not seeing the entire button?).

  • Wish list for Encore

I don't see a wish list category here so maybe we could start one.
My number one irritant in Encore 2.0 is the default ON of "Sync Button Text and Name." This in on by default and it should be off or unchecked in my opinion.
I do all my menus in Photoshop and import them into Encore. My buttons are all set. Then when I start assigning buttons to timelines I forget to uncheck this and it screws up my PS buttons by changing them to whatever I called my timelines. I really hate this. Thank goodness for undo, but when a default is never what you use, then the reverse should be the default. At least that's my two cents worth.
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

posted this earlier in another thread until i found out that this is where i should have posted.
    so here is my list:
    1. The ability to import power point slide shows into encore as a slide show. This would make it really handy to import some ones previously created slide show and turn it into a DVD slide show. It doesn't have to do all the fancy animations or transitions, just import the slide shows. Yes I know I can export from power point to jpgs. Have you really looked at the results? Crap is all I have to say. Of course I could recreate them in Photoshop or some other program that lets picture and titling be created. You know how much extra time that step costs?
    2. Could you make a project manager for encore that is similar to the one in premier? I would like to be able to trim the project and remove "temporary files". I especially hate the number of temporary menus that accumulate in the menus folder. I want to be able to back up the necessary files only, not all the junk. it would also be nice if it would grab the video(I) that make up the project and compile them in to the folder that I designate as the new project folder, just like premier does.
    3. its not really to hard to now, but it would be nice if there was some method for telling encore that you are creating an Easter egg. Currently there are a few steps to doing it and it is all manual. It would be nice if you could designate a button as being an Easter egg and then tell encore which choice of ways you want it to handle it. For instance is it just a simple Easter egg where you go on the right direction on a button and viola, you found it. Or is it a button that you go to and it goes to a duplicate menu and then you need to hit the right button a couple of times and then viola, you found it. Any thing to make my DVD creation to have a few less steps.
    6. Another thing that I think encore needs has to do with the flowchart. Give me some zoom on that baby. I like it, but it would be nice if I could zoom out to look at the overall structure.
    7. The ability to normalize the audio across the entire DVD. My wife made a disc and some parts were loud and others were so quiet. It would be nice to not have to do this for each clip before in premier, but leave it till the final stage of DVD production so that it only has to be done once.
    more to come :)

  • Wish list for the Helix 2?

I realize this is a bit early, but now that there are a few Helix units out in the wild, what features would you like to see added or changed for the next ThinkPad Helix iteration?
    My personal wish list:
    Must-haves:
    - Haswell
    - a solid desktop dock for the slate with the screen angled up toward the user at 'writing angle', 2xhdmi, 4+ usb in back.
    - lighter all around, same battery life (thanks to Haswell). How about 3lbs with keyboard?
    - at least one USB port on the slate that is not blocked by docking.
    - eraser on the included pen!
    - SD or uSD card slot
    Nice to have:
    - a touch-cover like product. Make the mounting bracket slots magnetic and use those for the screen cover as well.
    - Firmware update: option to not lock the digitizer if pen is in silo.
    - virtual bezel to have more screen space when docked (see Intel reference design)
    - option to keep some of the USB powered when machine is off (plus clear indicator of power draw!)
    - a backlit keyboard
    - fingerprint reader
     From posts below:
    - Bluetooth connection to dock, so dock can work as wireless KB (no need to dock e.g to type one password)
    - HDD/SSD option in the dock like in the HP Split X2 (but boy is that thing heavy..4.85lbs)
    - higher resolution (1600 vertical), maybe after display scaling in Windows improves for multi-monitor setups..
    - better release schedule. Protip: estimate demand, get production going, THEN announce.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    An accurate ship date.

  • Spatial Wish List for 2015...

Here are my top two spatial wish list candidates for 2015. Feel free to join in!
#1. Allow DBAs to create and rebuild spatial indexes in any schema (as long as you have create any index rights), as you can with any other index type.
Currently, even with ALTER SESSION SET CURRENT_SCHEMA=theowner; you cannot do this as SYS. As a DBA do not want to know / maintain all these schema owner passwords. Using the hash / resetting password process can work, but is a pain when you need to do a large number of user/schemas.
#2. Reduce spatial index creation / rebuild times.
Using current map reduce techniques, R-Tree index creation times have shown a great decrease in other environments. It would be VERY helpful if a future version of Oracle also followed these techniques so that all system resources can be applied to the creation / rebuild, instead of the essentially serial process that currently exists. Bryan

    Hi Bryan,
Nice idea. Maybe it will achieve something, maybe not, but at least we've tried
@Paul: We are. But there are also some Oracle folks on here, so maybe we are being heard.
What I would like to see is even more integration. At the moment there still are a lot of exceptions for spatial data (try creating a spatial index without the privilege to create a sequence, for example). All those MDRT tables as well: I understand that they are necessary, but could they please be hidden somehow? Don't get me wrong, I still think Oracle has one of the best and most elegant solutions for storing spatial data ( and has had for the past decade really), but there still are enough differences between spatial and "normal" data that it takes quite a lot of extra knowledge to be able to deal with it properly. Which is not necessarily a bad thing by the way, but it can be aggravating at times.
Secondly: There still are quite a few spatial functions that are in Java. I can understand that it is easier that way, but it does impact performance. If all of the spatial functions could be moved closer to the core, it would be easier for us to achieve great performance (because it would be much more under our own control).
There's a ton of other things that I would like, but these two touch the core. Everything else is either laziness or being a kid in a candy store
    Happy holidays everyone,
    Stefan

  • My iPhone Wish List

Not sure if anybody cares, but here are the things I'd love to see happen with the iPhone. The phone is totally ******* and I really like a lot - I just wish it had the following features:
    1. Unified email in-box instead of completely separate box for each account
    2. The ability to create shortcuts and liberate functions from within the "settings" menu and move them to the main page OR
    3. A software update that puts shortcuts for wifi and bluetooth on the main page - I turn them both on and off constantly (much more frequently than I watch You Tube on my phone, for example) to conserve battery life
    4. Better battery life when wifi and/or bluetooth are activated
    5. Improved performance from the Edge Network. With a wifi connection the thing hums, but with Edge sometimes it won't even completely download email (especially if it has attachments). That is lame.
    6. Let us create our own **** ringtones! It's an iPod, fer chrissakes!
    7. Enable cut and paste functions.
    8. In future versions put a normal headphone jack on the iPhone so connectors made for iPod (especially for car connection to aux jack) will fit in it without that crazy $10 adapter.
There's my wish list! Now, if I close my eyes and hope against hope, or maybe I should just send these to Apple...

I, too, would like to see more out of my $600 iPhone. But I think most of your points are hopeless because:
+1. Unified email in-box instead of completely separate box for each account+
What's the point? Then you'll have less of an idea which message came from where.
+2. The ability to create shortcuts and liberate functions from within the "settings" menu and move them to the main page OR+
+3. A software update that puts shortcuts for wifi and bluetooth on the main page - I turn them both on and off constantly (much more frequently than I watch You Tube on my phone, for example) to conserve battery life+
Point taken, this might not be a horrible feature to have a soft button on the home page for turning on and off all -three- transmitters separately.
+4. Better battery life when wifi and/or bluetooth are activated+
This is entirely dependent on the hardware chips driving those transceivers. As such, you're dreaming.
+5. Improved performance from the Edge Network. With a wifi connection the thing hums, but with Edge sometimes it won't even completely download email (especially if it has attachments). That is lame.+
Welcome to EDGE. It's barely faster than an analog modem. Your 3G iPhone will be on the market in a year or two. Live with it until then.
+6. Let us create our own ** ringtones! It's an iPod, fer chrissakes!+
Oh yay for copyright and political issues. When you want to make a song a ringtone, everybody wants a cut. The song writer, because he wrote the song. The cell provider, because you're a member of their 'network'. And Apple because you should be buying the ringtone from iTMS.
The technical problems behind this lack of funcationality is minimal. The problem is ENTIRELY political. I wish Apple would just do it, but I think they're playing too much CYA to offend the other parties involved.
+7. Enable cut and paste functions.+
I think they simply overlooked this one. Once they settle on something that won't rip off Windows Mobile too bad, they'll implement it.
+8. In future versions put a normal headphone jack on the iPhone so connectors made for iPod (especially for car connection to aux jack) will fit in it without that crazy $10 adapter.+
Aaaaaaaaamen! This is the biggest failure of QA I've ever seen. Even normal iPod headphones won't fit!!!
All that said, I love the iPhone, really! I just want it to be the device we know it really should be.

  • My FinalCut Wish List

My Valentine's gift to Apple's FCP feedback site was the following Wish List (which I figured I'd also post here just for the heck of it).
Some of these feature requests may only apply to my particular -- some might say peculiar -- workflow, but I suspect a few of them might strike a responsive chord with other FinalCutters. (Whether any of them are on Apple's Do List is of course another question.)
    (using FCP 5.1.2 under OX X 10.4.8)
One User's Final Cut Pro Wish List:
(sent to Apple's FinalCut Feedback site, Feb. 14/07)
    An Undo History.
If Final Cut can "remember", say, 10 levels of Undos (or whatever that user pref is set to), then why can't it display an Undo History palette, with brief descriptions of each Undoable action - a la Adobe Photoshop?
The fact that even FCP's Edit Menu just says "Undo" and "Redo" -- with no attempt to even say what it is you're about to Undo or Redo, is really pretty sad.
    A "Learning Mode".
An easy-to-turn on or off mode in which more detailed Hint Dialogs (like Tool Tips on steroids) appear onscreen -- with definitions, suggested uses, possible workflows, even links to the reference manual. All very context-sensitive, and all designed to hold-your-hand and help you understand a new area of the app.
I'm not the least bit too proud to say I would use that mode a LOT (at least when no-one else was looking!).
Option to Auto Scroll the Timeline while in Play.
Likewise for an audio waveform displayed in the Viewer. Is this feature really that hard to implement?
And while we're on the subject of things people have been requesting for a long time now, let's add another chorus for...
Robust, Reliable, User-Friendly and Intuitive Media Management.
Auto Pitch-Correction Option when doing Speed adjustments.
This seems like a no-brainer: just like the "Frame Blending, yes-or-no" checkbox when you Cmd-J to do a speed adjustment, there should be a "Pitch Correct Audio?" checkbox right in the same dialog. It's really very embarrassing that FinalCut still refuses to do this audio function. This is NOT something you should have to transfer into a whole 'nother app to do, or have to apply a special AU Pitch filter to the clip just to try and get it to sound normal again.
    which reminds me...
How about a Round-Tripping to Soundtrack workflow that actually works?
(I've had two Apple Store "Creatives" unable to get it to work properly, and several FCP veterans advise me to just avoid that workflow altogether, at least until it's thoroughly "deflake-ified")
    Better Labelling Options.
Would love a way to apply text labels (and color codes) to Timeline Tracks (in the left-side info pane). For example, so I can add the label "Dialog" to tracks A1 and A2, "Narration" to tracks A3 and A4, "Music" to tracks A5 and A6, etc, -- and then maybe even color-code groups of tracks for quick reference.
And how about a much clearer, user-definable indicator to highlight which window (Browser/Viewer/Timeline) is currently active -- a selectable color for the active title bar (or even framing the entire window) -- instead of the current medium-grey vs. light-grey all against a grey background (not the most dynamic visual cue).
And just as I can color-code Browser icons, I would also like to be able to color-code Timeline tabs -- AND change their left-to-right order simply by dragging.
    Miscellaneous
A few quirky little things I'd like to be able to at least try:
An Option/Preference for the Timeline to be auto-selected when you drag a clip onto it.
An Option to keep a Timeline Zoom-In centered on the playhead position, rather than on the start of a selected clip.
A Poster Frame option for thumbnails in the Timeline (especially if one's been set in the Browser; as opposed to the current first-frame-or-nothing default)
I'd like the ability to Link multiple video items to a single audio item in Timeline, and create a merged clip from that selection (using the audio clip as the "anchor")
And why does the "Delete All markers" command only delete markers from selected clips where the playhead happens to be -- I still can't find a way to delete clip markers from ALL selected clips, regardless of where the playhead is.
I hope that most of these features have already been incorporated into the next release of FinalCut -- and if not, that you'll give serious consideration to implementing them as soon as possible. Your users will thank you.
    John Bertram
    Toronto

    Hi John
This ones a User to User forum, no Apple reps here
Indeed -- hence the opening line of my post:
"My Valentine's gift to Apple's FCP feedback site was the following Wish List" and
"One User's Final Cut Pro Wish List:
(sent to Apple's FinalCut Feedback site, Feb. 14/07)"
Also why I didn't post the letter as a Question actively seeking help. It's simply offered in the spirit of a Mike-Meyers-as-Linda-Richmond "talk amongst yourselves" moment ("I'll give you a topic: Final Cut is never final, but often cutting. Discuss.")
Nevertheless, thanks for the feedback. Further to which...
    A "Learning Mode"
we are our own learning mode right here!
And an invaluable one, to be sure. I just feel that FinalCut could still build in a few extra "stairs" to make its learning curve a bit easier to climb -- stairs which can of course be skipped entirely by the more experienced users.
An Option to keep a Timeline Zoom-In centered on
the playhead position, rather than on the start of a
    selected clip.
If there is no selected clip then the zoom centers on
the playhead. If there is a selected clip then the
zoom centers on the selection. Or just use the zoom
tool (z) and zoom wherever you like. They pretty
much have this one covered, its just a case of using
the right tool at the right time, not just adding
    more tools/options.
This was a small one -- and perhaps one I shouldn't have bothered including. I just personally wouldn't mind a User Pref to the affect of "Timeline zoom (when using Option+=) always centers on Playhead" (the default for which would be Off, but which I in my own world of weirdness would turn On).
I'd like the ability to Link multiple video items to
a single audio item in Timeline, and create a merged
clip from that selection (using the audio clip as the
    "anchor")
Thats called "Nesting". Check out Sequence menu >
    Nest Items...
I've actually been having to do a fair bit of Nesting, often of just individual clips -- to the extent that I now have a Nest Item button in my Timeline button bar.*
What I was looking for here is something a bit different: really just the mirror image of when you have several audio clips Linked to a single video "anchor" clip. It would be in situations where I'm using a continuous chunk of audio to which I sync up bits of short video clips. Some of those video clips are from that same (call it the master) take, while others are from different takes in which the actor spoke a phrase in the same rhythm. In certain situations, I just want to be able to Cmd-L Link ALL those video clips on the Timeline to the one Audio clip, while at the same time not linking other interspersed video clips which are simply cutaways. But I still want all the clips to remain separate and un-nested.
    * Don't know if that explanation makes any sense, but as to the Nesting issue itself: Is there any way to force a Filter effect to be applied AFTER a Motion tab effect? I'm asking because I have a sequence to which I'm applying a Widescreen Matte filter to each clip. (The filter has to be applied to each clip individually to allow for vertical repositioning using the Offset control.) But some of the clips also require a Scale adjustment under the motion tab, increasing the image size to 105 or 110%, for example. In these cases, I find I have to apply the Scale change, then Nest the Clip, THEN apply the Widescreen Matte filter to the nested clip. If I try to do both in the original unnested clip, the Widescreen matte gets applied first, then that entire matted image is Scaled to whatever % I've chosen -- and that obviously changes the apparent size of the matte onscreen.
While you can easily change the order in which different Filters get applied to a clip, I've yet to find a way to change the order in which Filter effects vs. Motion tab effects are applied. Maybe I'll post this issue as an actual Question in a new thread.
Meantime, I hope that clarifies a couple of the quirkier items on my FinalCut WIsh List.
    Cheers,

  • My wish list is not visible

I ad selections to my wish list...but when I go to home and under quick links,  My Wish List is not there????

The 'buy all' has, for some reason, been removed from the current version of iTunes - you can try leaving feedback for Apple and maybe it'll be added back in a future update :http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html . Until then you can only buy items individually.
In terms of the 'x' for deleting items from it, other people have posted about that and it's affecting me as well. I assume that there is a bug with the current version of iTunes and/or a problem at Apple's end which they need to fix.

  • HT1368 why is the "buy all" no longer visible on my wish list? and it is not letting me delete items.?

  • Wish list posts - support and recommendations

I think TongucY has the right idea with the Wish List posts. If you think a feature is needed, this is one of the few easy ways to let Oracle know. 'Vote' for a feature, capabiltiy, or improvement if you think it is needed in XE.
I have a few recommendations when making a wish list post:
    1) Don't bother asking for features that are only in Enterprise Edition. (You can reference the Licensing document to determine which are only in Enterprise Edition here
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/license.111/b28287/toc.htm)
    2) Explain how/why moving the feature is a benefit to 'us'.
    3) Moving a feature into XE potentially loses Oracle money by reducing sales of the 'for fee' product. As a company legally responsible to it's shareholders, they need to know how giving something away is going to benefit the company. Try to explain how this will help them.

For example SQL Server 2005 Express Edition compared to Oracle 10g XE have similar limitations like -
    - 1 CPU
    - 1 GB RAM
    - 4 GB user data etc.
There is one difference, SQL Server Express Edition one can create up to 16 instances on a single box - http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345154.aspx
So maybe another strategy can be preparing similar wishlists to the rivalry, I feel this one difference may not be in our wishlist but maybe it is at the top of the list already :)

  • My wish list doesn't have an option to buy?

I don't have an option to 'buy' against one or more items in my wish list.  I can share, gift etc but not actually buy..anyone else had the same problem?

okay, it could be one of a few things-first, fire up Audio MIDI setup and see if that helps, secondly, there might be something stuck in the headphone jack in the on positin- maybe wiggling around in there with a plastic pen might fix it
    just a thought
