IWeb without .mac

To Whom it May Concern, I would like to learn to make websites using iWeb, but I would not like to use it with .mac. Are they are other ways to publish websites without using .mac?

Yes, I do that for my site. All you do is "Publish to a folder" and the upload the results to your host via an FTP client such as YummyFTP or Cyberduck.
Here is a helpful resource posted on a previous thread:

Good luck!

  • Can I use iWeb without .mac?

I can't figure out if I can create a web site with iWeb without having a .mac account. Apple implies, but is not stating it conclusively, just recommending it:
"iWeb publishing requires Internet and webserver access (.Mac recommended)".
I have no need for .mac and have web hosting elsewhere. Does anyone know if I can just use iWeb to create my website and publish elsewhere?

PS Here's a note on tips for this:

  • Using iweb without Mac Me ?

    Hi,
im new to all this and trying to use iweb to create a new site for myself.
i cannot publish because Mac Me is no longer available and i dont have a previous subscription.
i would like to use Mac to publish my site without going external is this still possible?
i have read about going through another hositing site.
but i would rather stay using Mac programs and Hostings if i still can.
    Can anyone help???

Unfortunately there isn't a way to publish to mobileme unless you already have an account there, and even if you did I wouldn't suggest getting it all set up and then having to change it next july.
I'd recommend purchasing a domain name and hosting from somewhere like Lunarpages.com and then they will provide you with the FTP settings to load your page up onto.
A good link for using iWeb with another host is:
    http://www.ehow.com/how_4819834_publish-iweb-mobileme.html
The main thing is that you want to get yourself set up with something that will be around and supported for quite a long time so you don't have to redo things again.
Keep in mind that from the looks of it iWeb isn't being developed anymore... at least get yourself publishing to another service.  It will take effort and work, but it will be your best option.

  • For those using iWeb without .mac

If you don't like the slideshow offered by iWeb when you don't publish to .mac, cheer up because there is a way to replace it.
iWeb dumps a folder called "SlideShow_assets" into your published folder. You can replace that with whatever favorite javascript or flash slideshow package you want, it just needs to get the image urls info and current slide index from the opening photo page.
I kinda like http://www.couloir.org/js_slideshow/ which is open source under the Creative Commons 'Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0' License. I adapted it to work with iWeb. Here's an example:
    http://www.codemanic.com/iweb/Europe/La%20fotografia.html
You can use the same if you like, download here:
    http://www.codemanic.com/iweb/SlideShow_assets.tar.gz
Whenever you publish with iWeb, replace the SlideShow_assets folder provided by iWeb with this one.

Can I use this slideshow if I DO publish to .mac? I
    couldn't find a "SlideShow_assets" folder, but I did
    find a SlidShow_assets.html file which I replaced,
    but that didn't work.
I don't think so. I don't have a .mac account so I cannot test (my trial period already expired too ). I looked at other people's .mac slideshows to spy how it works and the slideshow for .mac is slightly different. slideshow.html already has a js context with the images array, it doesn't take them from the opener context. So it's harder to just override the file. The code is a little different but I'm sure it could be modified to work... (unfortunately I don't have time to pursue this, so I'm not volunteering, sorry).

  • Using iWeb without .Mac=TOTAL TORTURE

    Hi,
I've been trying to use iWeb to author a website and host it somewhereother than .Mac. What a total nightmare!!!!!!
There's got to be something I'm missing!
I publish my site to a folder, and upload the files the my hosting service.
Here's what is giving me trouble-
    1. All image reference addresses are directed to the folder location on my hard drive, there is no way (short of rewriting the source code) to have iWeb automatically insert the web location of links and images globally within the site.
    2. Random characters and code are inserted into my pages, usually a capital "A" figure with a small triangle on top of it. This causes much trouble and I have to go find these and manually delete them in the code.
    3. In order to use iWeb to make multiple independent sites, you have to go into the application library and move the domain file to another folder.
It seems strange that Apple would make such a powerful program to basically sell .Mac subscriptions...

  • Publish iWeb without .mac

I'm new to iWeb. I have a domain name from godaddy already. I have read many posts and figured out how to forward my domain to the web.mac.com/address. Like many other people, I don't want to pay the .mac price. (I am currently using the trial version.) So from reading the discussion board, here is what I have gathered to do when my trial version comes close to expiration:
    1. download a "client" such as fetch or captain ftp.
    2. remove the forwarding on godaddy.
    3. continue creating my website on iWeb.
    4. upload the website to my godaddy server using the "client"
Is this right??? If I am missing any steps, please advise.
    Thanks!

Thank you for your web site and it's help to us illiterate folk here.
I've been able to use iWeb and publish to my godaddy account (through Fetch). However, I've hit a snag that I don't like. Is there a work around?
I used my domain name in my iWeb title (I -think- I understood you correctly) and my web site connects to my iWeb creation. However, the file name that seems to work is a bunch of gibberish numbers (AC29F712-7153-407E-8024-B76605D2C125). It is the file name that iWeb gave to my creation. I did not name it thus.
I've tried to rename it on my HD and upload it (Home, index, default) but then my home page will not automatically recognize it when I type it (and yes, I've cleaned my cache...numerous times between trials).
My home page will -only- recognize a freshly uploaded gibberish folder (AC29F712-7153-407E-8024-B76605D2C125).
I know there is a work around. Can you help a poor gal out? :^)

  • Syncing my 2 Macs and iWeb with .mac

    Hello people...
I am having troubles with iWeb. I started using it today for the first time. I love very easy to use and looks great.
My problem is this... I use 2 macs and want iWeb to update changes made on both of the machines. Example : I update a page at work then publish, all is good. When I get home I would like to make more changes to the page. This is the problem. I know all the files are stored locally (library-application support-iWeb/ domain.sites) before they are published but I don't really want to copy the domain.site file everytime I move machines or make updates.
I was hoping iWeb would check with your .mac account and update iweb on both of my machines.
Doe's anyone know if th iweb does check .mac?
    Thanks in advanced..

This is from will and it worked on my files, thanks! before I had just ported the domain file without opening and saving in iWeb and it just drew a blank page but if you open iweb first and THEN save and THEN replace the domain file you should be fine
"""""I have not done it, but from reading other posts I believe that this is what you need to do. If you have already done this then i apologize
Open iWeb without your copied domain file in place.
Add a page and then close iWeb, choosing to save, this creates a domain.site file so that IWeb knows where to look.
Move this newly created domain.sites file elsewhere.
Copy your other domain.site file into: User / Library / Application Support / iWeb / Put it in this folder.
Reopen iWeb and you should be looking at the site you created on the other Mac.

  • IWeb without using mobileme??

can i create a website and later get a domain name and publish the site i created in iWeb without using mobileme or anything like that?? sorry, new to all this and don't want to get going and realize i need a mobileme account

To add to Roddy's post - these are the features that will be lost by not hosting on MobileMe:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a Non-Mac Server:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Blog RSS Subscription
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ Enhanced slideshows
Most can be overcome on the 3rd party server except for the Enhanced slideshows. Don't ask me what that is because I've not been able to find out (I use MMe). You can use a good, strong 3rd party blogging service and embed your blog site in one of your site's pages: Embed a Site Within an iWeb Page. For password protection most commercial hosting services offer that feature, for either the whole site or individual pages.

  • Comments Without .mac

Is it possible to still use the comment feature of iWeb without having to pay for apple's .mac web hosting service and using a different hoster? I have heard of apps like iComment but not sure about it?

I use iComment and love it. It works great. It's really easy to use (all you have to do is written on the website http://web.mac.com/cbrantly/iWeb/Software/iComment.html ). The application is not freeware but it's really worth it to pay 10 $ and that's it. You can also add the comments to every page on your website if you want, not only in blogs. Further it's great you can manage comments and get notified by e-mail when you have a new comment and so on (you can also install http://www.haloscan.com/ Comments by yourself but iComment makes it easier)

  • Safari doesn't read pages generated by iWeb on .Mac, but Firefox does

I had a really bad experience with Safari 2.0.4, and I still don't know why that program is becoming such a problem. I am using Quicktime 7.1.6
I have been making podcasts using GarageBand, iWeb, and .Mac since February 2006, and things have been working okay. But today, when I checked my page on Safari after I published it using iWeb 1.1.2 to publish on .Mac, the podcast pages didn't work. Checking pages that used to work, they don't work any longer with Safari. At first, I thought it might be a problem with my storage allocation on .Mac, but that is not the case (I have using less than half my allotment). I thought the podcast file might be broken, but it works fine in iTunes. I tried it on my laptop, but Safari didn't work either.
All my podcast pages that previously worked, now show a question mark in the Quicktime box. Needless to say, I was concerned, so I tried much older files on .Mac that have already worked before, but no dice.
    One such page is:
    http://web.mac.com/eschaal/iWeb/Docketer%20Project/Podcast/C7F36E57-1AB2-4D12-A8 87-1F199E86AE2D.html
Then I tried Firefox, and it works fine.
What gives? Why is Firefox more compatible with iWeb and .Mac, than Apple's own Safari? Why is Safari suddenly not working on two different machines, while Firefox works perfectly?
    PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

I found some further information, re my problem.
Factoid one, I went to the Apple Store in Nagoya and they had exactly the same problem on their machines that I had had, so it is NOT anything to with my machine, my upgrades, etc.
Factoid two, I ran the iWeb-generated coding through http://validator.w3.org/ and it found "page is not Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional!"
Factoid three, Firefox runs the page just fine.
Based upon this, I am posting a comment in the blog for my podcast identifying the problem and recommending that people wanting to see the page in Firefox. In the meantime, I will migrate that podcast off of .Mac, remove iWeb from my machine, and migrate all my web browsing to Firefox. I had contemplated dumping Safari before, because it has turned flaky (failing to quit sometimes and sometimes hanging up), but this was the final straw.

  • Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

Can I move my iWeb from mac-mini to my new macbook pro ? iLife 11 does not have iWeb and I really want to use it to update my website on my new macbook Pro instead of Mac mini

There is no license required for iWeb.  Just do a Wyodor suggested and you'll be ready to go. If you're running Lion however, consider the following:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Better without .mac than with it

One would think that if ANY server would allow iWeb files to display correctly, dot.Mac's would first. Yes, there's better slideshow implementation - but first I'd just like iWeb files to display the way I built 'em - with rollover links showing in the correct colors, typography not wrapping inside boxes because of padding (type that looks fine in iWeb, that is), etc.
When publishing to .mac, iWeb also stops displaying the progress clocks next to each site after the first upload. Try and quit iWeb, and I'll see a warning dialog box about the dangers of quitting during publishing. Only way to make them reappear is to quit and restart.
After the fun & games we've had with the random duplication (requiring HAND-deleting, yes you read right: by hand) of over 3,000 Address Book entries and 1,700 Safari bookmarks, this is one dot.Mac user that is going to let that puppy EX-PIRE.

And you think that you will have a maintenance free experience with any shared server? Everything needs massaging once in a while.
I left Network Solutions and CrystalTech shared servers for iWeb. Why? I really do not need to spend $200 plus a year on Coldfusion or PHP/ MySql server space. My experience with both companies was excellent but on occasion I did have problems with the database servers. That's why you back up everything. So nothing is fail safe. My .Mac experience has been awesome.
iWeb and .Mac does have it's own issues .... but that is the nature of web design. Try designing a complex site only to have it break in Internet Explorer. Or try designing a 500 line script only to find out that it crashes because you forgot a ; .
The simplicity of iWeb and .Mac sometimes is it's weakness. I am a professional web designer and I have to say I am impressed with what you can do with the product. It's not perfect, but like designing on any server, there are fixes and ways around any problem.
And most of the time the problem is not with the product.
Sometimes things get buggy. That's true in any pc work platform. Most users have great experiences with Apple products. And when they hit a bump, they figure it out. That's the fun of computing.
There are many reasons why what you design may not look the same way when you render it in a browser. Padding issues are common even with hand-coding. Colors may look totally different on different computer screens. You are dealing with many different graphics cards. PC are always darker than Macs. Web design is about compromise. Getting your design as close to what you want as you can. It's not possible to make it perfect.

  • IWeb or .Mac Homepage

I'm new to website publishing, and am wondering what the pros/cons are to iWeb and .mac homepage? How are they different? Which one is better and why?

From the Apple .Mac website.... quite a while ago:
First: reassurance. The pages you've created and are publishing with HomePage are still available at homepage.mac.com/yourmembername and you can continue to use HomePage to create and publish new pages. But what iWeb makes possible is so good; multiple websites and multiple kinds of web publishing, all made extremely easy; you'll most likely want to take advantage of it.
Not a problem. You can use iWeb as your new .Mac web publishing center and keep your existing HomePage content alive in two different ways. The simplest (and we do mean simple) is to navigate to your HomePage pages in Safari and drag the urls into pages you're creating within iWeb. The link will appear with the name you've given the page in HomePage. When you publish, any links you've dragged in will take visitors to those pages.
The other way is also simple. Just republish the pages with iWeb. The same photo album you used the iPhoto HomePage button to publish can either be republished directly out of iPhoto again or dragged straight from iWeb's integrated iLife media browser. The photos will appear instantly. Just click Publish when you're done and announce the event to your audience.
Added benefit: The new slideshow that accompanies iWeb-published photo pages is an extra pleasure to view and use.

  • IWeb versus .Mac

I am looking into purchasing .mac and iLife. On perusing, it seems iLife has iWeb and .Mac is all about interacting with the web. Why purchase both? What are the distinct differences? Anyone?
Thanks. Novice to the web using realm,

iWeb is an application for constructing websites on your computer.
.Mac is the Apple server where you can publish your site to view it in a web browser.
You do not have to have a .Mac account to publish your site. You can use the services of a web hosting company - most of which will give you a better deal and better performance than .Mac.
