IWeb without using mobileme??

can i create a website and later get a domain name and publish the site i created in iWeb without using mobileme or anything like that?? sorry, new to all this and don't want to get going and realize i need a mobileme account

To add to Roddy's post - these are the features that will be lost by not hosting on MobileMe:
Features Unavailable When Publishing to a Non-Mac Server:
◼ Password protection
◼ Blog and photo comments
◼ Blog search
◼ Blog RSS Subscription
◼ Hit counter
◼ Enhanced slideshows
Most can be overcome on the 3rd party server except for the Enhanced slideshows. Don't ask me what that is because I've not been able to find out (I use MMe). You can use a good, strong 3rd party blogging service and embed your blog site in one of your site's pages: Embed a Site Within an iWeb Page. For password protection most commercial hosting services offer that feature, for either the whole site or individual pages.

  • How do I publish my site without using MobileMe?

I have been publishing an iWeb designed website to my own domain name for more than a year without using MobileMe.
Had a computer repair done and Apple did a clean install. I am now rebuilding the site because my files don't talk to iWeb after reinstalling the software. Yes, I had everything backed up three different ways, including TimeMachine, but the external drive died at the same time as my laptop.
Now I can't figure out how to just use my ftp to publish. Every time I try, it wants me to use MobileMe. I don't want to use MobileMe. How do I get to an option to just enter my URL and publish the site?
Previous versions of iWeb 09 gave me a screen to put in my URL, but not the latest permutation of iWeb 09. Help!

    Greetings,
Sorry to hear about the loss of data. Multiple backups are a good idea. I burn my iWeb domain file to a CD (along with my calendars and addressbook) once a month as well as maintain a Time Machine backup. I use MobileMe's backup program to trigger these backups, however if you are not a MobileMe member you can search online for other backup programs that can do this for you on a regular basis.
You can input your FTP host settings by following the steps in the iWeb help menu under "FTP": http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iWeb/3.0/en/6838.html
    Hope that helps.

  • Is using iWeb without a MobileMe account futile

I have no need for a MobileMe account so it's way overpriced compared to an average host.
I was able to do this much - publish an iWeb site to a local folder and use my Mac as a host (This shouldn't matter but I used the Safari server with MAMP - i.e. Macintosh Apache MySql PHP) to get more functionality than the one with Leopard. Using Port forwarding allows the Mac to be a host, but obviously this isn't a good solution if you understand IP. The RSS and Podcast features worked except for the comment functionality and the search didn't, but I can work around that.
I started out using this method because the only other publish option was "Publish to a folder". (which you select on your local file system) I really want to publish to a remote host. I don't know of any way to do this here, but perhaps there is:
So one question is: Is there a way on Leopard to make a folder a kind of alias for an HTTP address:? Or some other clever method of using publish to folder publish the files to a host via HTTP.
Mobile networking is a huge trend and Apple shouldn't have to shut out the few of us that don't want it now by not having a publish feature in iWeb that allows you to use a host of your choice. It doesn't matter why iWeb was written this way. I'm just really frustrated because it's a waste of 80$ for me if I can't get this to work.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, because I'd certainly like to be wrong about this. But not including a publish feature that allows you to select a remote host seems rather suspect.
Ok, I had what I thought was a very acceptable and reasonable workaround, which has very desirable features. I came up against another limitation that I find really hard to live with, if I can't find an easy workaround. iWeb generates a lot of files in a folder structure. So, I tried reading them into Adobe Dreamweaver (which is by far the best XHTML editor available and adheres to the newest w3c standards.) When I tried this, half of the site just didn't work, and the scripting was not functional in IE 7. I'm sure tons of other stuff doesn't work and I didn't even bother to go through it all. Using Dreamweaver would allow me to publish to a host of my choice and it would also allow me to do things that iWeb can't do.
I like iWeb, especially for it's podcasting implementation, but it's obviously is very limited. I always assumed that since HTML is such a ubiquitous and well established standard that I just assumed iWeb HTML could be read with most any HTML editor, especially Dreamweaver. If I wanted any advanced functionality I could get it there, and use iWeb for the podcasting and simple sites.
Is iWeb so proprietary that it's generating HTML and supporting files that can't be edited in a product as superb as Dreamweaver? Has anyone had any luck editing the files produced by iWeb in another HTML editor? I would have thought this was a given.
I'm hoping that someone can give me some workarounds. Otherwise, it will confirm my theory that Apple is forcing MobileMe as a host for iWeb sites, which is really restrictive and unnecessary.
This is extremely frustrating and so if anyone has any workarounds to these problems, I'd really appreciate hearing them.
Otherwise, I just wasted 80$ on iLife, which I don't appreciate. And if getting iLife 09 is the workaround, I think I'd need to be convinced that it can both publish to any host and that it produces files that are compatible with Dreamweaver to even consider it.
    Thank you for your help,
    -Frank

    fpatrick08,
My 2 cents, I though about getting mobileme service but the $99 per year stopped me. After I got my hosting with another company I found out that amazon sell the service for $69 per year. I still do not use mobileme but with Cyberduck and some work around it work pretty decent. You can see it by yourself here: http://www.wesdotphotography.com/Home.html
    Hope this help

  • Iweb and using mobileme password protected photo gallery

I am trying to create a website. How can I access a password protected photo gallery by using MobileMe gallery widget in iweb. I need this capability. The unprotected galleries display using the MobileMe widget. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the discussions. Try this...
    • Temporarily unprotect the Gallery
    • The Gallery should now appear in the list of available Galleries — add it
    • Protect the Gallery

  • Publishing iWeb site using MobileMe

I created a new website using iWeb, set up the CNAME alias, and published it using MobileMe. iWeb indicates the website has been published. When I go to the website, I get an error message:
    Directory Listing Denied
This virtual directory does not allow contents to be listed.
    Help!?

I followed the thread and performed the activities to test the site. I too was able to see the site. When I looked at the URL for the actual site, it still shows mac, not mobileme. Is this part of the problem?
    http://web.mac.com/ccgaler/TProcurementSolutions/Home.html
I'm using Netfirms for the domain name, it was all fine until I used the "Masking" feature. When I selected the "On" radio button, I lost all my graphics and the navigation bar on my site. Now I'm not sure if I have to start from scratch, or if that would make a difference.
    Thanks!

  • Is it possible to edit your site remotely, without using MobileMe?

...please tell me there's [free] a way to do this without MobileMe (which I believe is the awesome, though dreaded, $100/yr program offered by Apple)? Please let me know.

MobileMe has nothing do to with creating and editing a site with iWeb. but you do need a Mac computer running iWeb and have a current copy of the Domain.sites2 file that was used to create the site. If this is what you mean this online MacWorld article might be of interest: Managing an iWeb site from multiple Macs.

  • Protect blog made with iweb without using .mac to publish?

    Hello:
I am getting to know my Mac and love it. I have domains and publish my first page with iweb. Everything works fine. However I wish to password protect my blog to only be seen by my familiy and friends. I know how to set it up, but it said it is not working if you do not publish to .mac. Now I don't want to do anything illegal here, but is there a way to still password protect my page or just my blog or am I out of luck. I like to have my own domain and also want to redirect to my business that way.
I am happy to hear any suggestions. Maybe I can even ad my .com website to .mac, but for now I do not know why I should other than to password protect my page. I have dreamweaver and would like to learn how to do web design as well.
    Thanks for the help.

Have you tried using iWeb to publish to your website to your domain? It's built in with '08. I don't really have a lot of faith that it would help, but it's not publishing to a folder. It's publishing directly to your website. Give it a shot.
The other option here is to mask your domain, probably not your first choice but you could do it this way. You could publish all of your stuff to .mac and then route your domain to the .mac website. Then to make it even more appealing, you can mask the .mac web address with your own domain. Thus giving you all the functionality of .mac without the .mac web address. Literally your users can just type in your domain and it will take you to it your site as it would and they would never have to know you were using .mac.
This is beyond my expertise and I have not tried it, but it is possible, I know many people that have done it. If you're interested, just do some research and it'll happen for you.

  • Syncing iCal without using Mobileme

This is probably a basic question but I'd appreciate help please.
My wife and I each have a MBP which are synced for contacts, bookmarks and calendars.  I have a Mobileme account in my name and my wife has an iPhone.
We now want to sync just the calendars from out MBPs to her iPhone.  We can do this fairly easily via iTunes but is there a way we can do this wirelessly?  We tried adding MobileMe to her iPhone but ended up with duplicate entries for everything in iCal as it was all transferred to the Mobileme account.  We don't want to involve MobileMe as I want to keep this just for any personal/work stuff.
The iTunes system works but it would be good to be able to have the iPhone updated automatically.  Is there a way of doing this please. (BTW, I'm still on Snow Leopard if this makes a difference)
Many thanks in advance for any help.
    John

    You could use Google Sync:

  • Syncing across devices without using mobileme

Hi, I use ical on my ipad for all my work and personal dates. I gather I need to pay for mobileme to sync across my ipad, iphone and macbookpro.  However, I thought mobileme was being discontinued and also, doesn't the cloud take care of all of that?
A subsidiary point is that I recently had to purchase a new hard drive and I've really lost confidence in having the laptop as my master for docs and trust the ipad far more.
    Any thoughts please, from anyone?
    Thanks - J.

Firstly, MobileMe is dead, and there is no question of paying for it.
Your signature says you have 10.6.6 - is this correct? If it isn't please correct it to prevent confusion. if it is, you should firstly get the 10.6.8 combo updater to get it as high as Snow Leopard will go.
If you want to use iCloud's full facilities you need to upgrade to Lion: this is $29.99 in the Mac App Store (which you will need 10.6.8 to access). Your Mac will need to meet the requirements:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
and your iPad will need to be running iOS5.
If you have not migrated your MobileMe account to iCloud, go to http://me.com (on your Mac) and follow the link to migrate: you need to do so as a matter of urgency as we don't know for how much longer this will be possible.
That done, in theory you should be able to access your email in Mail at the same server settings, but this hasn't worked for everyone: you can set Mail up manually to access your iCloud email:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Once migrated, your mail will also be available at http://icloud.com
Strictly speaking Snow Leopard cannot sync your calendars: there is an unsupported hack which has worked for some people.
If you can't, or don't want to, upgrade to Lion you might be interested in BusyCal, which is an iCal-like calendar application with extra facilities: it can sync with the iCloud Calendar while running on Leopard, Snow Leopard or Lion. A single user licence (two machines allowed) is $49.99.

  • Inability to publish iWeb content using MobileMe

I'm in a serious time crunch to get my site updated on Tuesday. I've made lots of edits and revisions and saved frequently. When I attempt to publish in part or whole, it acts as if it is publishing successfully, but when I visit the site, it's the old version. I've cleared my cache several times now. I even tried Apple's suggestion to quit iWeb then find and delete some com.apple.iWeb.plist files. Guess what, I don't have those files in the location specified. I have other com.apple.... files but nothing for iWeb. I logged in to me.com to make sure everything is ok with my account - and it is. I don't know what else to try. Any help appreciated

Yes you do have the com.apple.iWeb.plist file. You are probably looking in the wrong place for them though. Rather than going to the System Library/Preferences you need to go to your Home User Library/Preferences instead and this is where the com.apple.iWeb.plist file is - the iWeb application and domain files are stored under Home user/Library/Application Support/iWeb and so the plist file is under the home user Library/Preferences.

  • IWeb Translation using Microsoft Translator Widget (beta)

  • How do I upload iWeb-site without using 'Flie Publish' feature?

Due to corporate firewall restrictions I cannot use iDisk, Sync or iWeb to connect to .mac, which presented a problem when I wanted to Publish my iWeb site.
I have uploaded the site [via webdav, with Transmit] to the Sites folder of my iDisk, but I can't find my site when I enter my .mac URL into my browser (http://web.mac.com/myusername or http://homepage.mac.com/myusername).
Theoretically, is this the right way to upload to iDisk without using iWeb? Is there anything else I need to do to link my URL to the files in iDisk/Sites?
    Thanks in advance, Lee.

Ok, my member name is leepaulvickers.
    I've tried
    http://web.mac.com/leepaulvickers
    http://web.mac.com/leepaulvickers/iweb
    http://web.mac.com/leepaulvickers/leepaulvickers
    http://homepage.mac.com/leepaulvickers
but just get the 'we can't find the HomePage you've requested' 404 error.
BTW I've used Transmit to upload to my iDisk in the past, such as files and photos with no problems. I assumed there would be no trouble with iWeb's files...

  • I created a website with iWeb but use GoDady for hosting it rather than MobileMe. The images on my Gallery page do not show at all on the external domain but they DO show when seen on MobileMe. Has anyone encountered this problem before? Many thanks!

    Hello al!
I created a website with iWeb but use GoDady for hosting it rather than MobileMe. The images on my Gallery page do not show at all on the external domain but they DO show when seen on MobileMe. Has anyone encountered this problem before? Many thanks!

Just create a new page (or use the existing photo page) on your external site and use html to add an iframe sized to the page and link it to the mobilme gallery page. Works for me just fine when showing my gallery from a yahoo site.
    like this
    <iframe scrolling="off" allowTransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="yes" style="width:100%;height:100%;border:none" src="http://gallery.me.com/your_account_name"></iframe>

  • Will I still be able use mobileme iweb domain forwarding in icloud ?

Will I still be able use mobileme iweb domain forwarding in icloud ?
I have dozens of iweb sites hosted on mobileme pointing to www domais using web masking .
Will this also be a possibility with icloud ?
    Also is iweb finished ?

At the moment it seem probably not, so you had better look for alternative hosting with GoDaddy or HostExcellence.
Also, remember that iWeb is a package that is used for building websites, no more and no less, so if you still have iWeb on your Mac then you can still use it whether or not you have MobileMe or not - iWeb can still be used - if it exists then you can use it but rather look for an alternative host.

  • IWeb without MobileMe

I'm probably being really dense here...but. When I started using iWeb I was testing out a web-site through my trial period account at MobileMe. But ultimately I decided to register my own domain elsewhere, so I'm not using MobileMe. My question is: when I was still on the trial period of MobileMe - every time I imported something new to my web-page it appeared as a file in iDisk. So a vidoe I had on my site appeared as an mp4 in the iWeb folder on iDisk, along with jpegs, etc. If I'm not using MobileMe - and the iDisk gets disabled - where is all this stuff going? I'm only asking because I'm trying to figure out the best way to manage everything. When I save latest changes to my site in iWeb - where is it saving everything to before I publish it since it's no longer iDisk and MobileMe. Is it saving it to the company that's hosting my web-site?
    Thanks!

iWeb saves your website data to a domain file whose default location is Home Folder/Library/Application Support/iWeb.
Its important to realize that, once files are published from iWeb locally on your Mac or to MobileMe or another server they cannot be imported back into the application. If you lose this file, or it gets corrupted, you have lost your website so its really important to back it up and keep that backup up to date.
