IWeb won't open .html file

Greetings,
I recently upgraded from a G5 running Tiger to an Intel iMac with Leopard. I have several basic web pages that I used to edit using the ancient Classic app, Claris Home Page.
Now that I can no longer run Classic apps, I thought I'd give iWeb a try. I right-clicked an html file and selected Open With. In the dialog box, iWeb was greyed out, so I switched from Recommended Applications to All Applications. Then, when I selected iWeb, the app gave an error message saying it could not open a .html file.
Umm, isn't that the point of the app, or is this thing designed to create some sort of proprietary file format specific for use with MobileMe?
BTW, after this, I was unable to launch iWeb directly from the Finder because it would always try to open that same file again, resulting in the same error. I had to trash the prefs files and empty the trash before I could open iWeb again and get to that opening template page.
Help? thanks
Dennis

When you create a site in iWeb it saves it in its own special format in a file called 'Domain' in ~/Library/Application Support/iWeb. When you publish, to MobileMe, to a local folder, or to another server, it creates the html, css and other files on the fly and uploads them to the server. When you want to edit, you open iWeb, it reads the Domain file, and you edit as necessary and re-upload. If you want to edit the site on another computer, you have to copy the Domain file to that computer and open it in iWeb. You cannot re-import the published html files and edit them in iWeb, nor edit html files made in another application.
To do that you could use Kompozer (free).

  • IWeb won't open domain file

Last week, we published our Web site via Mobile Me. This week, when we tried to modify the Web site, there is an error message saying that it can't open the file. If I trash the plist files in both the domain file and in the Library folders, iWeb will open fine, but it'll ask me to create a new domain file.
We've been keeping the domain file on a Shared server so a few other people can update the Web site. They've been downloading the domain file to their local computers, editing the Web site, then placing the edited domain file back into the Shared folder.
Why would this not be working this week where it's been working fine the past 4-5 weeks?
I'm using Snow Leopard (I know others have had problems with Lion).

We've been keeping the domain file on a Shared server so a few other people can update the Web site. They've been downloading the domain file to their local computers, editing the Web site, then placing the edited domain file back into the Shared folder.
How do you know the doman file you download to work on is the latest?  If two users are making changes at the same time and one then uploads to the server and then the other uploads the domain file will not have all of the changes.  How to you control that?
The problem could be some kind of permission issue.  Try running  BatChmod   on the domain file with the settings in this screenshot and try opening it with iWeb again:

  • IWeb won't open-cannot find "index.xml" file

I've been having kernel panics lately and ran off my hard drive to another Mac (iMac) -not using migration assistant-and upon returning back to my main computer (MacBook Pro) and after diligently saving my Domain file, iWeb won't open because it cannot find the "index.xml". I have the site up on my idisk and when I open up the package in Domain, there's plenty in there. How do I get back to where I was-an iWeb site that I can manipulate.
Any way I can get what I do still have to work? Or do I have to make my site from scratch again even though I have loads of files all over the place and only this one missing?
I think Apple needs to tell us "how" and "what" to save when we need to vacate a computer because of kernel panics and the like-wouldn't you say? I ALWAYS suffer from something missing when I have to put the OS back on the computer from scratch-not to mention hours of wasted time downloading updates again and having to find keycodes and various application discs!

    Welcome to the discussions, RPashman.
I got this message before when I was editing multiple Domain.sites. I believe it happened when I tried to Publish when the Domain was not in the iWeb folder. During the Publish, it places a Domain file in the iWeb folder (maybe because it has to publish from there even though the actual file is elsewhere??) and if anything goes wrong, iWeb when it next opens will default to that improperly created Domain.sites file.
Check in the iWeb directory (Library/Application Support/iWeb/Domain.sites
) and see how large the Domain.sites file is. If it's something under a meg, then maybe this is what happened to you. Move it out of that directory (I held mine just in case) then relaunch iWeb. Since there's not a Domain.sites file there anymore, it should ask if you want to create one or open an existing one.
Not sure if this happened to you, but it's possible. It happened to this user as well.

    I haven't installed Lion. i'm still using 10.5.8
I last edited my website on December 5,2011 and today it won't open at all.
Geting an error message Can't open file Domain.sites2
I've tried copying the file to a new location - but it won't open there either.
i've tried restoring a version from December 10th using Time Machine but it won't open that file either...

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 won't open any files, not even create new ones

I have a freshly installed version of Photoshop CC 2014 and it just won't open any single file no matter what I do.  I also have Illustrator CC 2014 installed for the past week, and it is behaving fine, and even opening up the files that Photoshop won't open (jpg, psd, png, etc.).
I've tried uninstalling completely, and reinstalling it, and it still won't open any files.  Basically, nothing happens after I click the "Open" button from the Open File dialog window.
I've also try resetting my user preferences using this video tutorial, and it also didn't resolve the problem: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/preference-file-names-locations-photoshop.html
Has anyone else experienced this or can give information on how to resolve it?
    Thanks!

Well, I finally got it to work through trial and error.  Here were the steps that I used to get it to work:
    1) Make sure that you are not behind any firewall/VPN/etc, just a direct connection to the internet (if possible).  I use Adobe for my work laptop, and I was informed that this could potentially be an issue during installation processes.
    2) Uninstall Photoshop via the Creative Cloud application interface.
    3) Right-click on the Creative Cloud icon from the system tray and "Quit" (it was automatically started for me from a previous bootup)
    4) Right-click on the Creative Cloud desktop icon and choose "Run As Administrator"
    5) Re-install Photoshop
After performing the above steps, I can now open any png/jpg/gif/etc file, as well as start a new file.  I have no clue why it works or if my steps played any role in fixing it, but I thought it was worth sharing for others to try if they encounter a similar issue.  It could be either the firewall I was behind, or the permissions (I don't think Creative Cloud boots up running as administrator).  But I am in no position to say I know the exact resolution.  Hope this helps!

  • Dreamweaver CS5 won't open any files from a project

    Hi,
I'm working on a simple website. I work on it from 2 different locations (home and work), and the files are stored on a removable USB disk. The problem is that for some reason Dreamweaver won't open any files made on the other computer. It shows the sitemap, eveything. But when I click on a file, nothing happens.
I've tried a couple of things:
    1. recreate the site in the site manager - still the same problem
    2. remove the preference folder - still the same problem
The only solution is that I have to copy the files to my desktop, recreate the website in the sitemanager and then it works. But only if I copy the files to my desktop, any other location on my HD (not the removable USB disk) simply doesn't work.
Does anybody know why this happens? Or even better, does anybody have a tip of how to workaround this problem?
    thanks!

  • Safari 7.0.5 unable to open html file

I used to be able to open HTML files in Safari so I can read the content but now it won't let me. Safari 7.0.5. Is there an issue with this version? I am also unable to see some content in our SalesForce app for work. Would a different version of Safari fix this?

You may have installed "SearchMe" or some other malicious Safari extension.
From the Safari menu bar, select

  • Adobe Bridge CS6 (Mac) won't open .arw files from my Sony RX100. How do I get and install the right version of Camera Raw?

Adobe Bridge CS6 (Mac) won't open .arw files from my Sony RX100. I was told to update Camera Raw to at least 7.2. I tried to download this but got a DNG Converter instead. Where is Camera Raw? (it does not show up in a search of my hard drive. There is a folder of camera profiles but no extension or plug-in with this name). How do I find out what version I have already? How do I get the correct version?  . . . OR . . . is it the case that Bridge will never open Sony raw files directly and I will have to do a separate conversion process every time I want to use a raw file??. Can someone explain this?

  • How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?

How come pages won't open PDF files made by Pages?
I have files I made with Pages and exported as PDF but I can't open them with pages to edit?
Also, where are the recent files created by pages located? Can't find those to open either..

    Hi Tom,
I was delighted when I signed up for Pages. Clunky yes, but it worked. I've been a graphic designer on a Mac for 25 plus years and have logged too many horror stories of "upgrade" wars which cost me massive lost time, data and money forcibly extracted just so I could finish a project.
When I first used Pages in April of 2012? or there about, I was able to open Word documents exported to .pdf format, emailed to me, which I then dragged into Pages. I could make the changes I needed to make, export as a .pdf, return it back to my client which they could then edit on whatever it was they were using. I'm not a neophyte with this. I've had Original Photoshop as a stand alone, Quark (which locked users out 6 months after I purchased it.) Quark again, Freehand, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Photoshop again, Creative Suite for several upgrades, Acrobat Pro. 2 years ago I lost 6 years of Quicken data and had to and "upgrade" start over. This last go around I  had to "upgrade" my Apple ID - yes I had 2 on purpose, lost my Pandora One and my ability to get into the Tulsa County Library website.
At this point, I'm retired and feel like what I've paid for in the past should WORK today. I have a 100+ page cookbook in Quark which I was able to export as a .pdf, that I've lost the tags too, Easier to start over. I have artwork that is hundreds of megs in Photoshop. Not the least bit interested in anybody's "cloud".
Thanks for letting me vent. I'm determined to keep my equipment and software up to date so I can enjoy the skills I've acquired, but I completely cringe at Apple's antics. I truly hate it when I have to respond to some new "tip" or product offer. BooHiss. Happy Turkey Day. Pages is a "turkey" program.
    Best regards, mbd

  • Can't import/open HTML files in Fireworks CS4

I'm trying to import/open HTML files into Fireworks CS4 to do some redesigning. I inherited the job of redoing my companies website and we believe the person who created our website created the site using Dreamweaver 8. Unfortunatley that person moved on to a new job across the country and we can't ask him exactly how he created our website.
When I try to open some of the HTML files in FW I get the message: "Could not open the file....Fireworks could not find an HTML table in this file". Next I tried creating a new, very simple HTML page in Dreamweaver CS4 that contains just a few lines of text and 1graphic (we just bought the CS4 web suite). Again, I get the same error.
Other files give me a slightly different error message when trying to open them in FW, "The HTML document contains one or more images with absolute web addresses for the source. Fireworks cannot handle these images. --click OK-- (next error message) Could not open the file. Fireworks has encountered a problem with the HTML in this table. Verify that the HTML is valid"... and then it closes and nothing loads into FW. Bummer.
I've searched on these forums and can't find any solutions to this problem although I found a few people experiencing the same problem.
Do I need to do something to the Dreamweaver created HTML's to get them to open in FW? Any help would be appreciated.

Fireworks is a graphics editor that can export code; it is not an HTML/code editor.
If you have exported HTML from Fireworks, you ought to be able to re-import that, but I would think most people who use Fireworks exported code would just modify their Fireworks document and re-export. (Fireworks' code is not robust and it is only intended for mockups and prototypes. Fireworks is not intended for developing and maintaining live Web sites; Dreamweaver is.)
If your developer used Dreamweaver, then I really don't expect that Fireworks would be able to import that, nor any code that isn't in exactly the format that it can export. If you know your developer used Fireworks, then you need to look for .png files. Fireworks uses an enhanced version of the PNG format for its native document format.
If you are making small adjustments to your site, then you might be better off working in Dreamweaver. If you're doing a site re-design, then Fireworks is an excellent tool for laying out your design and producing your graphics, but you will, at some point, need to move over to Dreamweaver for coding.
