IWeb won't publish changes to website without adding "/SiteName"

I'm trying to publish changes to my website with a URL that is an established domain name.
When I click "Publish Site", iWeb adds "/SiteName" to the URL and the changes are
published to "URL/SiteName". But when I search for my site on Google (it pops up
readily as the website has been accessed many many times), the OLD, UNCHANGED
website with the old URL comes up. To get the revised website, users would have
to specifically use the CHANGED URL, "URL/SiteName."
Every time I try to remove "Site Name" from the blank for Site name, iWeb puts
"SiteName" back in. How do I keep the Site name slot blank so that iWeb will
publish my changes to the old familiar URL that can be found on Google?
As a Server engineer commented to me, "There has been a folder called [SiteName] uploaded
recently to the root [URL] of your account. This make me suspect that iWeb is set to publish in the
wrong directory. Make sure it is publishing to the public_html directory."
I put "public_html" into Directory/Path. Still no changes to my website at URL; changes have
been published only to "URL/SiteName".
Any help available?

That is the way that iWeb works and it is normal practice to get the url with the Sitename in it.  As you have found, if you try to leave the sitename blank, iWeb will put it back in.
The server engineer that you spoke to is correct that your site folder has been uploaded to your 'public_html" folder on your server.
If you want your url without the sitename included, then you need to upload the contents only from your site folder and NOT the whole folder itself and then your url will be http://www.domain.com without the http://www.domain.com/sitename/page name.html.
You can achieve this by publishing your site to a local folder from iWeb and then you need to download an ftp programme such as Cyberduck or Yummy ftp.  You then use either of these 2 to upload only the contents of your site folder to your 'public_html' folder on your server and if you just upload the contents and NOT the whole folder itself, then your url will be http://www.domain.com.
Sometimes putting 'public_html' into the Directory/Path will not work and you'll need to strart from scratch, so you'll need an ftp programme so that you can link up to your server and you can see exactly what is in your public_html folder on your server and delete the site folder and start again, by then uploading just the contents of your site folder rather than the whole folder itself.
Ultimately, what you need to do is upload the contents and the contents only of your site folder and NOT the whole folder itself to get your url back to http://www.domain.com without the sitename.

  • Iweb won't publish my new website

    Hai there,
I recently made a totally new website but when I visit the link the old one appears. I first published the site to my public folder and then to my ftp, no problems so far. Even when I visit the link from public folder the new site appears. But on the web the old one won't refresh. I even deleted the old one from Iweb.
What could be the problem is that I once published my site with Easy Iweb publisher, but even now that I deleted the account it still won't work.
Does anyone have a solution to this?
    Kind regards,
    Hoekstra

Deleting your old website from iWeb is not going to make any difference at all - this only deletes it from iWeb itself - if the site is published then you need to delete the old site from your server where it is published.
To do this you need to download Cyberduck - this is a dedicated ftp programme and will show you everything - all html files and folders that are on your server. Use this and you can delete the old website off your server so that the new one will show.

  • IWeb won't publish changes

I made changes to my first page and I've tried everything (I think) to get the new page up on .Mac. Emptied cache, viewed in Safari, IE & Firefox, deleted my entire site from .mac. I've tried changing the linked buttons and publishing to .mac. I've tried publishing all to .mac.
I do have the site published on a separate server but need this link operating properly. Could there somehow be a conflict with the pages on another server? At any rate I've deleted every old file I can find on my mac, on .mac, on my other server...
Of course this happened about 20 minutes after announcing the site to prospective clients.
    Thanks for any clues.

I just tried publishing all and got a error message on one of the files. The time before that it said the .mac server was busy.
    Here's the site:
    http://web.mac.com/patrickfifth/iWeb/EstanciasInArgentinaiweb/EstanciasInArgenti na.html
It seems the biggest issue is the first page, once it finally seemed to replace the old page with the new it converted the text all weird.
    Thanks for your help.

  • IWeb won't publish changed pages, just entire site

Hi folks, I have iWeb 09 and use ME as my webhost. I'm having an issues when I create additional pages iweb now publishes the entire site and not just changes. In the past published pages were blue and changed pages were red, now all pages stay red even after a successful site update.
of course this is rather annoying and time consuming as i have several gigs on my site, when only changing 1 page it takes hours to publish.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    David:
I just discovered one reason the iWeb keeps displaying icons red when publishing to a folder.
How are you publishing the site? To a folder and then uploading via an FTP client? If that's the case then are you deleting that folder after you upload? Again if that's the case then that's the problem. When publishing to a folder iWeb looks for for a plist file something like this: assets.file/--localhost-Users-toad-WSM%20Input-Helper%20Site-.plist. If that file is missing from the folder iWeb thinks this is a first time publication and publishes all the pages. You need to create a permanent folder to publish the site to and not delete between edits and republications. This is what it should look like:
Bottom line: don't delete the site and files after publishing to a folder.

  • IWeb won't Publish site when Podcast is added

I have two seperate sites on my iWeb account. I've tried publishing the first site with the new podcast I created. It worked fine. Then I tried publishing the second site with the podcast. EVERY time I get an error message that says it was unable to publish. I've gone as far as to export the GB3 podcast as a mono cast instead of a full quality movie. The size is about 15 MB. WHAT CAN I DO!?!
Is there a way to publish a podcast without using iWeb?
Why won't iWeb publish my podcast??
    Thanks

    Irish....
there are two possible solutions to fix this problem if I understand your problem correctly. you have two sites, with podcasts on both that you want published at the ITMS.
First... in the SITE ORGANIZER in iWeb. Drag the site you want published to the TOP of the SITE ORGANIZER WINDOW. You say you have two sites, iWeb treats the one at top as the master and publishes that one. I'm guessing that the one you want to publish, and are unable to, is in the lower position.
If you are submitting this new site to the ITMS for the first time, then choose the FILE MENU, then SUBMIT PODCAST TO ITUNES command. Follow the instructions like you did before and you should be good to go.
If you are submitting a new EPISODE OF AN EXISTING PODCAST (think second podcast episode, or new chapter in a book) then you take care of it this way. This is a post I gave to someone in the podcasting forum to help them with a second podcast they were trying to submit to itunes.
Publish your site to .Mac (or your server if it's different)... then PING itunes to let them know to go look for new content on your server (or .Mac). You PING iTunes by cutting and pasting the url addy below into safari and clicking return. You'll get an error message, don't worry, it's supposed to happen. About an hour later, maybe a bit longer, your new episode will be available.
DONT submit your podcast by selecting the "SUBMIT PODCAST TO ITUNES" menu selection again. That command is for your first submission, not your subsequent ones. Think of your podcast as a book. And each episode is a chapter. When you ping iTunes, they go get the whereabouts of the new chapter and make it available for the world to come and read, hear, or watch.
    the PING url is...
    https://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZFinance.woa/wa/pingPodcast?id=INSERTYOURFE EDIDHERE
Your feed ID number is in your original email from the itunes folks when they sent you your acceptance email and said that your podcast was now up and running on the ITMS.
    Hope this helps.

  • IWeb won't publish my website

Hi, very frustrated. Have spent two days designing my iWeb website, then when I finally click the 'Publish' icon, I get "Preparing to Publish..."
    Then...
"An error occurred while publishing file “/Web/Sites/iWeb/Site”."
GREAT. But iWeb won't tell me WHAT the error is, or what I need to do to try and FIX the problem! And I thought Apple and the iWeb software were supposedly so intuitive, easy and hassle-free...
Any ideas appreciated. Many, many thanks.

Thanks for the quick response. I've read Heaton's
suggestions and tried publishing to a folder. Worked
fine. Does this mean the fault lies with .Mac, or
    me/my Mac?
    Adrian...
This is good news. The fact that you can publish to a folder means that iWeb is not encountering any troubles with your website... The error message that it is generating just lets you know where iWeb is encountering it's "internal error"...not indicating that there is a problem with that particular page, etc.
What you have to understand is that iWeb is a pretty "dumb" program. I mean, it's great...it lets you design pretty fantastic pages and all, but when it uploads to .Mac it is sort of at the mercy of the traffic on the Internet as a whole. And there is probably some programming in iWeb that says, okay, after you send a file to .Mac, this is how long you should wait for the confirmation. If network conditions are slower or fluctuating, that confirmation may not get to iWeb in a timely manner and iWeb reports out this error message....which is basically a timeout message. iWeb has to draw the line somewhere, I guess.
The best advice that I can give to you then is to keep trying....different times of the day, different internet connections, wired connections instead of wireless connections, etc.

  • Downloaded Lion and Now iWeb Won't Publish New Page or Changes?

    Hello,
I am having the hardest time getting iWeb now publish info. After updating to Lion iWeb will not publish anything new I do on iWeb. It will act like it is publishing everything but nothing shows up on the net. What do I need to do to fix this?

    Try the following:
delete the iWeb preference files, com.apple.iWeb.plist and com.apple.iWeb.plist.lockfile, that resides in your Home() /Library/Preferences folder.
go to your Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iWeb folder and delete its contents.
    launch iWeb and try again.
The following will assist you in using iWeb with Lion partidularly if you have more than one domain file:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • IWeb won't publish site fully.

Hi. I'm having trouble publishing my latest site update with iWeb 1.1.2.
I just did a major update to a photo blog I've been publishing successfully for two years. However, after three days of trying, I suddenly cannot get iWeb (or mobileme?) to publish my site. It will compile the update and save my data, but not publish the entire update -- the progress circle gets hung up for 3-4 hours, before I finally force quit and restart my computer, only to try again and get the same results.
I am trying to update with the usual amount of data I typically do, and thus know from experience that I should be fully published in under 40 minutes. I've plenty of iDisk space, and about a fourth of my update does get published before things get hung up. Any ideas?
(For what it's worth, I see the spinning color wheel a LOT these days when using iWeb, and have had lots of finder issues when trying to publish this latest update -- font problems, apps getting hung, etc.)
    Thanks!

Because I uploaded a "save to folder" version of my site, I've lost the "comments" feature and the advanced slide show features.
Using that approach, perhaps Apple assumes that your site was not made using iWeb and thus iWeb-specific features are unavailable, i.e. Password protection, Blog and photo comments, Blog search, Hit counter and Enhanced slideshows.
How do I get those back?
Perhaps it's not possible if you're publishing via a folder. But to be sure, ask Apple via the email page posted previously.
FWIW, I only transferred the site folder, not the index.html file that was generated with it. Was that unwise?
That "+How to publish a custom website+" doc says: "...upload the HTML files (and any files that go with them) to a subfolder in the Sites folder (in the Web folder) on your iDisk." ...It doesn't mention omitting the index.html file.
On a general note, I suggest you consider more efficient and robust alternatives to iWeb's blog. Since iWeb stores blog entries on your Mac, you inevitably face long and potentially problematic publishing. And there will always be the possibility that you'll have to do a long and slow Publish All. Whether it's because you upgrade to a new version of iWeb or OS X or MobileMe, etc., the possibility exists.
But if you hyperlink from your iWeb site to a web-based blog, you'll avoid this — as your blog entries won't be stored on your Mac. For example, the free Posterous is as simple as blogging gets — you can post a blog entry (including images) via email or from a web browser:

  • IWeb won't publish to .mac

For the last 2 days, every time I try to publish iWeb to .mac, a box comes up asking for my password. I enter it, but nothing happens.
I think I may have an iDisk problem or a .mac login problem.
Someone please help. I need to republish asap!!!!!

I have encountered the same problems - my site was fine until yesterday when I decided to change it and now it won't publish.
Let me know if you figure out what happened
I'm using iWeb 06 and have not upgraded to the new one. I did install some software updates that come in automatically. I wonder if that might be the problem.
When I try to visit site - I get a download popup and my pages (name only appear on my desktop but they are blank and nothing happens when I click on the icon. Weird - weird - weird

You can probably get around it by publishing your site to a local folder...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/iWeb/Publish-Website.html
... and then uploading with an FTP application...
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/Upload.html
This is not so easy as publishing with the iWeb FTP.

  • IWeb won't publish my daughter's sites (multiple users; one computer)

Our daughters have their own computer, so I created two user accounts (one for each). They also each have their own MobileMe account (under a family plan).
Each has created a site in iWeb. However, I can't get iWeb to upload either site. Each time I click publish, it says "sign in to Mobile Me" and the system preferences window pops up. It seems to log in to the account, automatically. iWeb has a window open saying "Logging in" When I click to return to iWeb, that "logging in" window disappears and nothing else happens. Nothing is uploaded.
Even if I try again, it says "log in" again. I don't understand why they aren't logged in automatically, all the time, under their username and why iWeb won't upload anything.

    Jim:
    Try the following. Even though it's for a different problem, mail in this case, it has helped others with your problem;
    Source: http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/mobileme/index.html#d30jul2008

After waiting a day for the rolling restore to happen, I called AppleCare because Apple had sent an email saying my service was back, and it wasn't. I still could send and not receive using Mail.
*Here is what fixed it*. Go to MobileMe (terrible name) in System Preferences, log out. Then enter a garbage name and password and try to log in. This apparently clears the MobileMe preferences. Then enter your real UserName and PassWord. For me this was lights on.
I am left wondering how long ago I could have had email had I known this preference reset scheme.

  • IWeb won't publish pictures in sRGB

    Hi all,
Got iWeb 09 and running it on latest OS on MacBook Pro. Here is the problem - no mater what options i choose - it publishes pictures in some other profile other than sRGB. The problem is that when viewed in anything other than Safari - pictures look terrible (bleak, dull and lifeless).
Here is how the workflow goes:
1 - Prep images in Photoshop (all in sRGB)
2 - Save them in sRGB
3 - Import pictures into iPhoto
4 - When building gallery and adding pictures in iWeb, add images form Media Selector.
5 - Publish to local folder
6 - check images - dull, lifeless and in wrong color profile.
I've also tried to add pictures by dragging them from Finder into the iWeb - same result.
Tried turning on/off web optimization in iWeb and iPhoto, no change.
    Please help

  • IWeb won't Publish Site

    Hi,
Everything works fine until I add a flash music video or any video to the page then it won't Publish. But if I remove the videos from the page it will Publish. (this is not an embed code but instead a link set up from the hyperlink menu when I click on the "inspector" dialog box.
Or should I instead use the embed code from my upload site?
Has this something to do with memory? I followed the advice that was posted on another "help" column to change the memory setting in the MobileMe page for iDisk, but that didn't work either.

  • Iweb won't publish

I am getting the following error message .. when I searched it I found only posts that are 2 years old from pre-cloud days .. but I am on cloud and 10.7.3
"iWeb couldn’t connect to MobileMe. Make sure your Internet connection works and try again."
I am definitely connected to the internet. I am on iCloud and have successfully published since switching, not sure why MobileMe is involved.
I am trying to publish changes that include large videos, a couple that are half a gig and one that is 3.6 GB .. I do have the overall space to fit it all.

When you convert over to iCloud you get logged out of Mobileme.  So do this:
go to the System/MobileMe preference pane and log out of MMe.
login with a bogus username and password like "Ying" and "Yang". This clears the caches.
login with your correct username and password.
    launch iWeb and try again.
