IWork 08 Media Browser Opens Network Shares?

The iWork Media Browser seems to have some rule for automatically mounting network shares.
Is there any way to prevent this? In my case it is accessing a share that is holds sensitive data, is slow to mount, and which contains no items I'd ever insert into an iWork's document.

After a long while on the phone with Apple Tech Support, we finally figured out the solution. After deleting ALL my previews (control-click on your main library icon and choose delete all previews) the Aperture library structure shows up everywhere it is supposed to. Of course, generating new previews will give access to the images again...
Hope this helps.

  • ITunes missing from Media Browser -- "open itunes to populate list"

I am on a MacBook Pro 10.7.3 running GarageBand '11 6.0.4 and all of the sudden no tracks will display under Audio in the Media Browser (Photos and Movies still appear). No tracks from either iTunes or GB show up. This is confusing as I have been using GB to make podcast/music mixes for more than 5 years and I haven't changed any settings or done anything different, but now I get the message "open itunes to populate list" or "To see GB songs here, open GB to edit and save your music."
Also, for quite some time I have been unable to go the alternative route of dragging tracks directly from iTunes and dropping them on to the timeline in GB -- that used to work, but mysteriously stopped, so I am dependent on the Media Browser for importing music.
I read thru the forums and tried the advice given to someone this was happening to in Final Cut -- recreating iTunes .xml file. Did that, still no tracks display.
Other advice says to reinstall GB or iLife altogether -- I hope to avoid this, but if I need to go this route, how do I reinstall GB w/o a disk? Can I do it through App Store and will it recognize that I have already purchased it?
I am dying to be able to get back in to my music mix making in GB, so thanks in advance.

you can't, you'd need to find the DVD

no, it'll only recognize your purchase if it was through the app store

  • ITunes library not included in media browser, can't share with iLife apps

My iTunes library is no longer included in my media browser previews in other iWork and iLife applications. Not sure when it disappeared, but I know it used to be there! Only recent changes I can think of are I recently migrated all data and accounts on my old iMac to the new iMac using Migration Assistant and I also recently changed the location of the iTunes library from an external drive back to the internal drive. Anyone have any ideas as to what's going on here?
    Your help is much appreciated!

Sorry to update the status, but I've also noticed that my iPhoto, iMovie and Aperture libraries are not being shared in the media browser either. I'm thinking OS X is looking in the wrong place for these libraries as a result of the Migration to the new Mac for some reason, but I really don't know. Any help?

  • Aperture doesn't appear in iWork's media browser or Mail's Photo Browser

I've just installed Aperture 2, and I realize that it doesn't appear in the following browsers:
    - Media Browser in iWork'08
    - Photo Browser in Mail
Also, in iTunes, I can select Aperture to sync photos from, but no album is displayed
Any idea what could be wrong ?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Cannot open network shares

Upgraded to 10.5 (yeah!) and love it. However, I can no longer open my Airport Disk. It is labeled as a "sharepoint" and every time I double click it simply goes back to the name of the disk. Now, I use a password and not accounts in the disk. I have "connected as" where it asks me for the password, but no avail.
Also, I have another network attached storage device that was doing the same thing. The only difference is it is a samba share and I can do a direct connect to it (e.g. smb://192.168.1.1/shared) and it works fine that way. But I had to enable viewing servers on the desktop and then drag the alias to the shortcut area in finder, etc.
Help? I would really like to access my data!

OK, so the AEBS disk saga continues. I connected the disk directly to my mac via USB. Leopard said that the disk was messed up (technical speak) and that limited access mode would be enabled. So I copied all the files to another external drive and went to repair permissions - no go. Next I attempted to erase the disk - no go - I/O error. Finally, I tried to remove the partition - the partition deleted but gave me an I/O error and then crashed disk utility. This, honestly, is the first time ANY program has crashed on my mac since I bought it last november.
I cannot create a partition or do anything further to this disk. I am going to attempt to reconnect it to the AEBS and see what happens - maybe a USB issue?

  • I get this message when trying to upload pictures to craigslist via my media browser: open iPhoto to see photos from your iPhoto Library in this list

Anyone know how to resolve this?  I have already repaired the iPhoto permissions and rebuilt the library but neither of these solved my issue.  I am using iPhoto '11 on a MacBook Pro.
    Thanks!

Can you access the images with Image Capture (in your Applications Folder) ?

  • No photos in the Media Browser (all iWork software)

In the new iWork the media browser keeps telling me that I have no pictures in my iPhoto library... any idea to solve this?

I just did a test in the Guest account with a test library and it seems that the problem can be caused by the file name for the photo file, including the extension.   If the file is named iPhoto Library.photolibrary, Pages shows the photos.  If it is called Aperture Library.aplibrary then Pages can't find the photos.
When I renamed an Aperture file, Aperture then created a blank library when I opened it.  I was able to open the renamed library in Aperture by choosing Switch to Other Library and then opening the renamed one.
I haven't tested this with the Aperture library full of photos because changing the name might cause other unexpected problems and I don't want to take the risk.
This seems to be a bug that Apple could fix fairly easily in an update so I'll wait for the fix.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does iMovie quit constantly when I try to Share with Media Browser? I want to burn this movie!

iMovie quits ALL THE TIME when I try to Share with Media Browser in order to burn the DVD.  Why? What can I do? Is it becasue I bought a refurbished Mac? I burned a DVD from another project only a month ago.

I don't know why it happens, but if you read messages around the iMovie Discussion Group it seems to happen to a lot of people. The easiest way around this is to Share to Media Browser instead of Share to iDVD directly. The Media Browser is a 'holding area' for video you want to use in other iLife Apps (including GarageBand and iDVD). When you Share to Media Browser, choose the Large size. Then let it run until it finishes. Quit iMovie.
Open iDVD. Create a New Project, Select a Theme. Then click on the Media Button. Click on the Movies button below the Media Browser. Your project will now appear under the iMovie star icon just drag that project into the iDVD project window. This should bypass the problem you were having by sharing Directly to iDVD.

  • Media Browser crashes iWork 06

I received my iWork 06 today. And tried to create a sample document. Opening Media Browser opens in videos. If I try to get a photo from iPhoto library, iWork crashes. Everytime.
Of course I can drag and drop photos from iPhoto but Media Browser should work too.

I did a reinstall of iWork. Now it seems to work. I had removed extra languages but I've done that to many apps with no ill effects.

  • How can I browse my network and play my media files?

I installed a free file explorer on my Android tablet. I can easily browse my network shares and access all my media content. I can play my movies, music, TVshows, anything by just browsing to the folder and selecting the file to play. It took me 5 minutes to figure this out on my Android tablet. I've been trying to do this for about 3 hours on my new ipad 3. I have yet to even find a file browser type app. Please don't tell me there is no way you can do this with an ipad. There is no way to play all your multi-media files with my very expensive ipad. I have so much media content I would love to access via my ipad, but I can't. Has Apple done this on purpose to lock down their devices so users can't do anything flexible? This is a HUGE difference between Android / iOS.
Also, I'm able to visit music.google.com on my Android to play my music. Besides iTunes, does Apple have a way the user can access a simple website and play their music files? I'm finding all this very troublesome and such a limited factor with Ipad. Please help!
If it ends up that Apple's brand new ipad can't easily browse a network and play media files then I'm going to return the two of them I bought. Just not a capable device if it can't do something so trivial.
    Thanks.

I'm still trying to find a way to do this simple task. Everyone has home networks now and not able to simply browse to a folder where you keep your video/music files is quite a problem with such a brand new, ultimate tablet. I can even do this with my Android phone I have. I have terabytes worth of music and movies and if I can't watch them with this ipad tablet then I for sure will return this tablet and buy Android from now on. I'm now finding out how locked down Apple products really are and how limited UNLESS you BUY an app or only go through an Apple type portal. I wonder if people know that you can't play your media you have saved at home with an ipad.

  • QuickTime v. Media Browser

What is the difference between "sharing with QuickTime" and "sharing with Media Browser" when one want to burn an iMovie project via iDVD? Haven't seen an explanation anywhere. Why would one use QT or MB?

There are several ways to share.
    1) Share to Media Browser - This shares so that the other iLife apps can use it, for example, you can open it in GarageBand or iDVD or iWeb from within the App (just as you can open Photos from iPhoto within iMovie).
It shares in h.264 codec with settings that are a good balance between quality and size.
    2) Share to iTunes - This shares to iTunes so that you can view it in iTunes, on an iPhone, on and iPad, on and iPod Touch, AND places a copy in the Media Browser. It uses the same h.264 presets.as sharing to the Media Browser.
    3) Share to YouTube. Will create a copy to share to YouTube, unless a copy already exists in the Media Browser. Uses the same h.264 presets.
    4) Share Movie - Will create a h.264 movie in the standard presets, but it will let you specify a location and a name. You can save it where ever you want, and it does not go in the Media Browser
    5) Share to iDVD - This option is only for movies which use Events that were created in Apple Intermediate Codec (from AVCHD), or HDV, or DV. In this case a single movie is sent to iDVD in the existing codec as a temporary file. You can burn the movie in iDVD. When you shut down iDVD, the temporary file (which is quite large) is deleted.
    6) Share using QuickTime - In this option, the advanced user has total flexibility. You can decided where to store it, you can decide which video codec to use, you can decide which audio codec to use, you can specify how much to focus on compression vs quality, you can select dimensions, you can use multiple passes in some cases. In essence, you can try to improve on the presets. It is rare that you would be able to get visibly better quality than the preset, but you may be able to produce a smaller file size at nearly the same quality. You can also specify to use an MOV container, an h.264 container, an MP4 container. You can use codecs like DV, Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple Animation Codec, etc. in addition to h.264.
I rarely make DVDs, because I like to show my movies in high definition. When you make a DVD, the h.264 presets in large or medium tend to look best. They are better, in my opinion, than sharing directly to iDVD (although this is counterintuitive). You can always share to iDVD by exporting using quicktime and dragging it into iDVD, but is is your responsibility to use something iDVD can handle. Whatever you do, iDVD will compress it to standard definition MPEG2.

  • No thumbnails in PP Media Browser

    Hello,
I am working on MacOS X with Adobe CS4 Production Premium. Our footage is either Sony XDCAM EX or AVCHD. The XDCAM files are copied via Sony's Clip Browser, i.e. with the complete BPAV structure. The AVCHD files are transfered via iMovie, resulting in .mov files with the Apple Intermediate codec. The reason being that Canon does not deliver any transfer software for Mac with its AVCHD camcorders.
Anyway, the result usually is quite a bunch of directorys and files, that would be great if it could be browsed easily. Unfortunately, Adobe Bridge can only show the transfered AVCHDs, not the XDCAM EX files. The media browser on the other hand does not allow for quick browsing, since it does not show any thumbnails. Neither for the movs nor for the XDCAM files. I only get a list of the file names. These are not helpfull at all, since that only tells me which camera was used and the order in which the clips where shot.
Now I saw on Adobe TV a video from MAX 2009 with a screencapture of Premiere with the media browser open and thumbnails all over the place. This is what I wished for all the time. Why do I not get thumbnails in media browser?
    Kind regards,
    Andreas

Why do I not get thumbnails in media browser?
Currently, these only work with DVCPro HD media from P2 cards.

  • Find network share process and kill it

    Hi All,
Is it possible that we could find open network share access process and kill it?
For example, user is opened a folder via network share (e.g: \\myserver\c$\myfolder). Is it possible that we could somehow query process to identify this open network share process and kill it before attemp to delete C:\myfolder? Please advise.
    Best Regards,
    Andy Pham
    Best Regards, Andy Pham

You could try checking for open file handles, as described here:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/317071/how-do-i-find-out-which-process-is-locking-a-file-using-net. They have both a solution using an external executable utility (SysInternals) and one using PInvoke. You could also use this other utility which is specifically
targeted at hosts of network shares:

  • Sharing to Media Browser problem

My movie is complete. I want to share to the Media Browser. It shares it no problem, except for the background audio on the clips. The video looks good, the music is fine, but NO background audio.
I've already tried sharing it to QuickTime and other choices with no luck. Any ideas?

Yup, I saw exactly the same problem. It appears that using the 'share' function in the media browser ceates files with the same name but in a different directory, but when iWeb posts the site it doesn't use the directory info, resulting in all moies pointing to the same movie. I found two different workarounds:
    1) Rename each movie to a unique name in the finder
    2) Use Export instead of 'share', and add those movies.
Neither solution is as elegant as 'share' in the media browser, but they both work.

  • I'm trying to share to Media Browser a 20 minute still slide show with music and text. I have tried several times to save at 1080 HD, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying "File already open with write permission."  What's this mean?

I'm trying to finalize/share to Media Browser a 20 minute still slide show with music and text. I'd like to finalize it 1080 hd and have tried several times, but just before it's finished, a message box pops up saying it can't be done because "File already open with with write permission."  What does this mean?  All files are closed; this iMovie project is the only thing open.  Does it mean one of the song files from iTunes? And should I just settle for saving it as a "large" file, which is what I'm trying right now?
    Thanks,
    Jamie
