IWork vs AppleWorks

I have Apple Works 6.2.9. I imported some old Excel Tables into AppleWorks and they work very well.
Question: I notice in the iWorks literature that AppleWorks and Word documents import into iWorks but it does not mention its capability working with table monitary calculations? I heep all my monetary calculations in Excel like tables now imported into AppleWorks tabulating cost of medications, miliages, doctor and dental cost Stock values etc., so at years end all these are current. Before I purchase iWork when most of its use would be for continuing these tasks will iWork expand on AppleWork capabilities including these types of tabulations?

Richard,
In a word, no. It won't. As it stands, iWork has no spreadsheet module and, therefore, can't do calculations. But there has been a lot of speculation about a new version being released on January 9th. So stand by.

  • Iwork or appleworks or office for Mac - which one?

I have just purchased a Mac mini - my first Mac ever! My first surprise was that it didn't come with bundled software, no word processor, no spread sheet, no outlook (or equivalent). it does have something called ilife but i haven't found out what that does. My needs are simple; all I want is to be able to access my emails through something like outlook, write letters and use a spread sheet. My husband also bought an apple so it would be good to be able to sync our emails as we use the same address. iwork doesn't have spread sheet functionality and neither provides an environment for accessing / sending emails nor a sync capability. Appleworks seems to have some issues with future support and doesn't provide the email / sync options. office for Mac seems to have some issues with functionality (cf microsoft office). Does anyone have any solutions that are not going to cost me more than the MAC itself?

When Apple created a distinctly consumer line of computers it began bundling AppleWorks and a few other programs (which varied from time to time). I’m surprised that Apple has chosen to replace AppleWorks with an incomplete iWork product and stop bundling.
iLife is the package that includes iTunes (for organizing your music), iPhoto (for organizing your digital photographs, iMovie (for editing your movies), and iDVD (for creating your own DVDs from your own music, movies, and photos). It is an incredible package but, of course, doesn’t include word processor, spreadsheet, or database. But you have missed Mail, a very powerful email program. Give it a look.
AppleWorks isn’t going to be supported any long, that’s true, but it currently works quite well and while it isn’t going to be supported in the future, if you found it in a bargain bin it would be well worth getting. Mariner Software makes Mariner Write and Calc and bundles the 2 for under $100. I’ve used both. Does Microsoft sell a student version of Office in the UK? If you have a student in the household you have a legitimate right to buy it. Office might not be available in an Intel native version yet (Universal Binary) but I’m aware of no problems - I’ve been using it with my mini for over a month. RagTime is an all-in-one product like AppleWorks and is offered free for non-commercial use. As such it is well worth the time to download and test out.

  • IWork and AppleWorks Conflict?

A friend said she lost all her AppleWorks docs (word processing and spreadsheets) when she loaded iWork'09. This is making me hesitant to load my new iWork software. Is there any way I can prevent this from happening?

As a text document is the same object when it is generated by AppleWorks or by an other program, you perfectly understood that I was writing about AppleWorks 6 Word Processor documents.
It's funny to see that you feel useful to point that when I just reproduced _YOUR OWN_ formula
Pages will open v6 AppleWorks text documents
but sure, you didn't remember what you wrote.
and btw I have asked in another 3 AppleStores (I have just been interstate for a week) about Word compatibility and output suitable for commercial offset printers.
The one variation I got was one (only one) Apple representative said I may lose some word wrap in .doc files, but otherwise the Pages output was no trouble for either saving to Windows or commercial printing.
I asked twice just to make sure they hadn't misunderstood and they were adamant there was no problem.
It simply proves that I am right when I write that we can't take vendor's responses as the truth. My father taught me that they are at least two synonymous to lyer. They are vendor and advocate
In French we say: "Les paroles s'envolent, les écrits restent".
Never trust a vendor's response. Check the printed items.
But as I often wrote, you are perfectly free to take care of vendor's advice and re even free to rant here when you discover that the truth is different of what was responded.
But, don't be surprised if I point the fact that if the vendors did what they are supposed to do: push you to buy, YOU didn't do correctly your customer's duty..

  • Can iWorks Open AppleWorks Documents?

Can iWorks open an AppleWorks word processing document?
Can iWorks open an AppleWorks database?  Does it import it into an iWorks spreadsheet?
I want to open my AppleWorks-based mail merge documents without having to convert them to Microsoft Office.
    Thanks.

The iWork (no 's') applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. If you still have access to AppleWorks you can copy the contents of draw documents, paste them into an AppleWorks word processing document in object mode (click the arrow in the tool panel), save the WP document & then open it in Pages. You can copy & paste from AppleWorks to Pages but you would have to do it object by object or it will be one big uneditable object.
There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents. Database data can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Pages can merge from an Numbers spreadsheet or AddressBook. Since copying & pasting from database to spreadsheet won't copy & paste the column titles, you will need to enter them manually & then define that row as a header row in Numbers in order to use it for merging with Pages.
Paint documents can be saved as one of many different formats to be opened in most image editing programs. I recommend using PICT for best results.

  • Iwork or appleworks?

i noticed on this site that theres apple works, and i was wondering which was better for word documents/pages, slideshows/keynote and the such.
and can you send to windows systems with appleworks like i heard with iwork?
    anything else would help
    thanks

Tried the iWork 'test drive' when I first got my MacBook and I've got to tell you, I was underwhelmed. Now part of that may have had to do with the fact I was also coping with coming (back) to MacOS, but much had to do with how the program worked for me. Oh, and that if I wanted to keep using it, I'd have to fork out yet more bucks for the program.
Uh, hel-lo - Apple can toss in a few cr*ppy games from 3rd party providers, but won't provide its own office suite to buyers of there overpriced machines?
Anyhoo, in my case, I was able to get my Apple Store to toss in free a copy of office:mac with my purchase - so all the programs I know (and many I'll never use) are there.
But if you're looking at some manner of an office suite, rather than spend any additional cash (at least initially), I've heard some very good things about the freebie NeoOffice (www.neooffice.org), the Mac-friendly version of OpenOffice. It also includes a Powerpoint equivalent and all the programs have the ability to save to a Windows-friendly file.
    Worth a shot?

  • Will iWork open Appleworks documents

I am hoping to transfer all my Appleworks documents from my G4 Cube running 10.4.11 onto a new iMac running Leopard, onto which I am going to install iWork 08.
I have read many comments centred around this subject, but I'm still a little confused.
The version of Appleworks on the cube is 6.2.4 which is an update from my CD version 6.0.4.
Having transferred my documents onto the iMac, do I need to reload Appleworks, or will the iWork open these documents without Appleworks being loaded?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.

    Hi John,
"Having transferred my documents onto the iMac, do I need to reload Appleworks, or will the iWork open these documents without Appleworks being loaded?"
It depends on what type of AppleWorks documents you have.
The three iWork applications, Pages, Keynote and Numbers will open AppleWorks 6 word processing, presentation and spreadsheet documents respectively.
If you have AppleWorks drawing or paint documents you will need AppleWorks or one of the few third party applications capable of opening those types. If you have AppleWorks database documents, you will need AppleWorks; no other application can open these directly.

    Barry

  • IWorks or AppleWorks 6.2.9    Which one is easier/simpler ?

The only thing i need is to open .doc documents, edit them and print them.
What is my simplest/easiest option (this is for a grandma, just upgraded from a typewriter to a G5. Keep it simple please !)

TextEdit, as Tulse suggests, or Word or NeoOffice. In Word or NeoOffice there are quite a lot of things to customize to make it easy for the user, but it can be done with some patience.
I would not recommend Pages or AppleWorks, as both applications Export the current document to .doc - they do not Save, so every time you have modified something you have to make sure you get the right file name and overwrite the original file. That is not something for a recent typewriter user.

  • Iwork 08 & Appleworks

Anyone know if Numbers will open AppleWorks spreadsheets?
I know I can save AppleWorks in Excel format but I doubt all my formulae will translate over as I've tried saving them in Excel format and then tried opening them in Excel and they don't work.
    Thanks,

    Hello
I tried the french demo version.
I met some anomalies while importing AW6 spreadsheets.
I'm sure that some strike on every version but maybe one of them is specific to french version.
    - 1 - Numbers doesn't know some logical functions available in AppleWorks.
    ISTEXT (ESTCHAINE)
    ISERROR (ESTERR)
    ISLOGICAL (ESTLOGIQUE)
    ISNA (ESTND)
    ISNUMBER (ESTNUM)
    ISBLANK (ESTVIDE)
When such a function is encountered, the cell contains the last calculated value.
When clicking the cell, on the french version, the description of the formula is given in english.
    - 2 - When a sheet contains dates (using the french current format jj/mm/yyyy) the conversion is foolish.
    date AW6 date Numbers difference
    31/12/1903 30/12/2000 35429
    31/12/1943 30/12/2080 50039
    31/12/1998 01/01/2191 70128
    31/12/2007 01/01/2209 73415
    31/12/2107 31/12/2408 109939
Is it foolish worldwide or is it a gimmick reserved to french customers ?

  • Appleworks corrupted in changeover?

    HI
I just purchased an iMac and now have OS 10.4.8. with Appleworks 6.2.9 installed on it. In the conversion from eMac 10.2.8, the Appleworks does not work properly. There are no Assistants, the Dictionary Learn is greyed out, and other such minor things. Is there any way I can repair this or download Appleworks and install again. I like Appleworks and it is sufficient for my needs. I am going to buy iWork, will Appleworks funtion properly on this program? From the internet, there is an Appleworks disc repair, would this help matters?
In other words, does Appleworks function properly on OS 10.4.8? Will look forward to your replies. Thanks
    Aldyth

I'm not sure that reinstalling AppleWorks will solve the problems. Whenever you do an update of AppleWorks &/or the system, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences).
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks's prefs files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences & delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Then, in this same Preferences folder, find and open the folder AppleWorks Preferences, then delete all of the enclosed files (except the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the prefs files as it needs them.
There are a couple of common causes for the Dictionary not "learning."
    1. After updating, you haven't "told" AppleWorks where the dictionary is. With a word processing document open, go to Edit > Writing Tools -> Select Dictionaries... > click "Main Dictionary" (if it isn't already clicked) > Choose > & navigate to the dictionary which should be in HD > Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks Essentials > Dictionaries. The same process is used to create a user dictionary. Click "User Dictionary" then click "New" -> Save.
    2. You have moved the AppleWorks 6 application out of the AppleWorks 6 folder. This will also cause Assistants & translators to be "lost." See the second part of my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more about that.

  • Apple works  or iwork vs. microsoft office for mac

I am a first-time mac user and unfortunately, did not have apple works loaded onto my imac. I did have a beta version of office for mac with which I am familiar. My question, since I was unable to trial apple works or iwork, is whether I should go with office for mac or apple works/iwork? My basic needs are word processing/home use. Hope someone can help me out as I need to purchase something.

me out as I need to purchase something.
AppleWorks and iWork are both less expensive than MS Office.
You should have trial versions of both iWork and MS Office on your iMac, according to this software list from the specifications page:
iLife ’06 (includes iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand),
Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Test Drive,
    iWork (30-day trial),
    Quicken 2006 for Macintosh,
    Big Bang Board Games,
    Comic Life,
    Omni Outliner, and
    Apple Hardware Test
Although my personal preference is AppleWorks, I'd hesitate to recommend it in your case. Appleworks is not, and likely never will be native to the intel OS X environment, and runs through Rosetta on the new machines. Although it runs well, and is a viable choice for anyone currently using it, AppleWorks is at the end of its development cycle. Unless you need its spreadsheet and database capabilities, you're probably better off looking at Pages in iWork.
Pages is a competent wp and page layout application, and for some long term users of AppleWorks, has become their favourite for this purpose. Pages includes some basic spreadsheet functions in inserted tables.
Office is an 'entrepreneur' level suite of applications, and as such contains a larger feature set in each application than either iWork or AppleWorks. But given your stated needs, it's probably a bigger hammer than you need, and one with a longer and steeper learning curve than you'd want. If you NEED to share files with Windows/MS Office users, there are a couple of free alternatives—OpenOffice.org, which requires you to install X11, Apple's Xwindow implementation, and NeoOffice, which runs in Java, which you will already have installed.
    Others may have different recommendations.

  • 11 Programs No Mac should be without!

I bought my Mac mini 05 Sept 2005 and realized that a lot of apps are needed to allow you to place nice with the ugly Windows-based world (poor saps!). Here's a short list of programs I've found invaluable as I've used Mac OS X. Just Google the name and you'll find a download for it.
    1. VLC/MPlayer 2 - I actually have both, because I've found VLC cannot open some files MPlayer can and vice versa. Until a Tiger-compatible version of DivX comes out these apps are EXCELLENT and FREE!
    2. WMV Player (Pro) - Although you can use Windows Media Player for Mac (which is a COMPLETE waste of code), Flip4Mac's WMV plug-in for Quicktime works flawlessly, and for about $15 higher than the standard codec/player, you can allow WMV Player Pro to re-encode .wmv files to another, more Quicktime-friendly format. Not free, however, $10 for WMV Player (plays .wmv files in Quicktime), $25 WMV Player Pro (in addition to the Player's features, allows you to re-encode .wmv files into another format).
    3. BitTorrent - I don't use it that much, but whenever I need a file that Torrent-only, I have this li'l app handy to download the file. Not a necessary app for me, but worth the download. (Free)
    4. LimeWire - Excellent P2P program. Allows downloading from Windows and Linux computers as well. Just don't go being all illegal-like and get the government on your tail. Last we thing we need is a Mac user behind bars and/or slapped with heft fines. We payed enough for the Mac as it is! (Basic is Free)
    5. MPEG Streamclip - Excellent file converter within Quicktime-friendly formats. I use it to convert MPEG-1 files to MPEG-4 so I can put them on my iPod (it has a iPod Conversion preset!) or be able to edit them in iMovie (iMovie no likey MPEG-1 videos! Drops the audio). (Free)
    6. StuffIt Expander - Allows the expansion of .sit files and whatnot. Nifty for Internet downloads and such. Good program to have around. (Free)
    7. SaveHollywood - A nifty program that allows you to play Quicktime-friendly videos as your screen saver. I use mine to play DVDs I've copied (THAT I OWN OR MADE!; see below) and my home movies. (Free)
    8. MacTheRipper - Nifty program for ripping DVDs into folders on your hard drive. You can opt to only rip certain parts, de-activeate Macrovision, and get rid of those pesky blocks that make you watch certain parts of the DVD. USE ON YOUR OWN DVDS! STEALING IS BAD! (Free).
    9. HandBrake - Good to use with MacTheRipper. Can convert VIDEO_TS folders into OGG, AVI, or MP4 formats. You can set up HandBrake to export to iPod-friendly formats, but there is no preset yet, but it's expected in the next update. Can rip straight from a DVD (making MacTheRipper pointless), but I wouldn't recommend it. I wouldn't want my SuperDrive active that long. (Free)
    10. Roxio Toast 7 - Another good program to use with MacTheRipper. Toast 7 has a Tiger-compatible version of DivX and is a beast of a CD/DVD burning application. Can burn disk images (great for getting iDVD projects on a DVD if you don't have a internal SuperDrive), among other nifty things. Pretty much the best third-party solution to getting your iLife on DVD. Check out it's website for a full overview of features. ($100)
10 Alternate. Roxio Popcorn - If you just want to make a copy of a DVD that you OWN, Popcorn does the trick nicely. You can use MacTheRipper to create the VIDEO_TS folder, then drag the folder into Popcorn. Popcorn can even strink and cut out parts of the DVD to allow it to fit on one single-layer DVD. I cut out everything except the English 2-channel audio and maybe the English subtitles. This allows for better video/audio quality. Keeping all the extras will degrade the quality of the video. But that wouldn't matter because if you want to watch the extras you can take the retail DVD off the shelf and pop it in because YOU OWN IT! ($50)
    ...and finally...
    11. Microsoft Office for Mac - Let's face it folks. Microsoft won the productivity age. All major businesses use Micro$oft's file formats (save the corperations making the OpenOffice jump). So in order to keep up (and maintain a level of familiarity for Windows Switchers), Office isn't a bad choice. Yes, Apple's iWork and AppleWorks can open and work with Office formats, those programs aren't as powerful as Word and Excel, for example. The suite comes with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage, and VirtualPC (Professional Only!). (Standard Edition: $399, Professional Edition: $499, Student & Teacher Edition: $149)
Those are ones I use regularly. Other things I'd recommend to buy (if it interests you) are GarageBand Jam Packs, Quicktime Pro, and Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Are there any you would recommend?

Good idea, Daniel, but I think this should go in the User Tips Library. Although it may be better to discuss it here before it gets sent to another section, and there may already be a thread in the User Tips Library about this.
Now, here are my two cents :
I don't consider P2P software as invaluable. In fact, unless you are a heavy P2P user, I wouldn't recommend using any. Of course, Limewire is probably among the best (according to my brother who uses it, personally, although I admit possessing pirated software - mostly Microsoft's - I try to avoid getting into anything even partially illegal), but I heard or read somewhere that the version of Limewire with the spyware-like "features" was the Mac version, not Windows. Since then I think it's been removed, but who knows what they might have added ...
I've never tried Flip4Mac, but I think I might take the plunge one day or another. VLC plays .vmw files just fine, though, and even though it's not appropriate for hi-quality videos, it is able to convert .wmvs to a QuickTime-friendly format.
I agree that Safari is sometimes not as good as I would expect from Apple, but instead of Firefox, I prefer to use Camino, also from the Mozilla Foundation. It uses the same engine, and looks better (since the 1.0b1 release).
I use NeoOffice/J, which is a port of OpenOffice.org running natively on OS X, and it handles occasional .doc and .xls file editing very well. For me, no need to get Office:mac, with its prohibitive prices (especially in my country, Office:mac Pro costs CHF 929 - about 721$, Student & Teacher is CHF 249 - 193$), and I like being able to use Oo.org file formats.
MPEG Streamclip is indeed a very good app, and much faster than QT Pro by the way.
Stuffit Expander used to come as part of Mac OS X, but since Tiger it doesn't. It is freely available, w/out registration, through places like Version Tracker, where you can find about all the software mentioned in this thread.

  • Is there clip art for Pages

My wife was trying to recreate something she had done in MS Word the other day, using Pages, but there is no Word Art or apparently no resources for clip art with iWork. AppleWorks had some clip art available.
Are there any resources for clip art for iWork/Pages?

Pages accepts .eps and .ai (converts both to .pdf), .pdf, tiff, .pict, .jpeg and .png.
There are a wealth of all these out there. Some free, some paid, lots cheap. Search for them.

  • Split view in Numbers

    Dear Forum users,
We have just transfered to iWork from Appleworks and are trying to iron out the differences! so please excuse me if this post is a little banal.
In Appleworks (as in other spreadsheet software) one can split a view so that you have two portions of the same table being viewed independantly. This is very useful with big tables so that you can see totals etc.
    Is this possible in Numbers?
    Many thanks.

Unfortunately, no, it's not available in Numbers or Pages. I agree that it is a very useful feature in AppleWorks & I suggest you leave feedback for both the Numbers & the Pages teams.

  • Appleworks to iWork

    Hi
I recently purchased a new MacBook and am currently using the free trial of iWork. I have plenty of info backed up on a disc from my old computers. I have just recently tried to access my old documents but some of them open in text edit and are all garbled. My question is...what can I do to be able to use these documents? By the way the ones not opening correctly are made using the drawing part of Appleworks.
    Thanks

If you select all in a Draw document and copy, and then paste into a Pages Layout document the contents of the original will come over grouped and can't be ungrouped.
It is possible to workaround this by the following process:
    1. Open the Draw document. Go to the Format menu and select Document: note the margin settings.
    2. Open a new Word Processing document. From the same menu item set the margins to be the same, having if necessary changed the orientation to Landscape in Page Setup.
    3. Go to the Draw document. Select all (command-A) then command-G to group. Copy.
    4. Go to the Word Processing document and click on the draw tool in the toolbar (the arrow): drag the mouse within the document to enter draw mode. Paste. You may need to drag the drawing to the correct position. Hit shift-command-G to ungroup. Save.
    5. Save this document. Drag it onto the Pages icon in the dock. Your drawing will now be opened in Pages and can be saved in it. You will be able to select individual objects and edit them. However I have found that if when you saved the Word Processing document in step 4 there are still some grouped objects, they will be grouped in Pages but attempting to ungroup them will hang Pages: I don't know whether this is a consistent problem, but it's advisable to check for grouped objects and ungroup them in step 4.
This process works well on the whole, though extremely complex documents (such as the one on the right, which runs to four pages) may finish up with a few items out of place, meaning you will have to look closely at it and check that everything is where it should be.
For complicated documents Yvan has a script (which he mentioned above) which makes the copy automatically and then checks each individual object to make sure that it is in the correct place: he will doubtless tell you how to find it in due course.
AW Draw documents can by opened directly by a program called EazyDraw. If you are dealing with complex technical drawings it's probably the best choice: it's about the same cost as the whole of iWork (when downloaded, and rather more expensive on a CD), but cheaper than some other vector based programs, and seems to handle the whole process well - though it does operate somewhat differently from AppleWorks. (I've not been able to test it with very complex documents since the trial version limits the number of allowed objects.)
On the general subject of migrating from AppleWorks you may find this article helpful:

  • How to import AppleWorks files into iWork?

Can AppleWorks files be imported into iWork?

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages (AppleWorks 6 only), though Panergy Software'sdocXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames); and the latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). However Draw documents can be copied into WP documents and then opened in Pages - more details here.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
Nothing will open Paint or Database documents.
If you have upgraded to Lion/Mountain Lion and have AppleWorks documents you cannot open, then you should be able to install Snow Leopard on an external hard disk and start from that (provided that the Mac did not come with anything higher than Snow Leopard originally installed); and success has been reported in running Snow Leopard under emulation in Parallels - the method is described here: it seems complex; however Snow Leopard Server is available in the Apple Store (by telephone) at a reduced price (at the time of writing) and this makes the process a lot easier. I haven't tried either method: use at your own discretion. You can then run AppleWorks as an emergency measure.
There is a detailed article on 'Abandoning AppleWorks' here:
