IWork won't reinstall from DVD.

I recently had a hard drive die. It was promptly replaced and most things work fine, though there was some weirdness with my Time Machine backup. My iWork wouldn't reinstall from Time Machine, nor will it reinstall from the disc. Te disc drive works for other discs and the disc is readable in other computers. But, when I put the disc in my MacBook Pro, the computer thinks about it for a bit then the disc pops out.
I thought I could download it from the web and put it in my serial number, but it won't work. What I thought was the serial number, from a sticker on the box below the barcode, was rejected and it told me if I had a box to install from the DVD, or that I could buy a serial number online.
I've got a temporary workaround with the trial version, but that will stop working in a month.

I hate when this happens! I know the disc can be read in other computers but still, take a look at the underside for fingerprints and/or scratches. Some drives are more finicky than others. If nothing else there are two possibilities and I know the first one will work. 1) Contact Apple to arrange a replacement disc.
Since the disc works in another computer you might try a) copying the disc (use Disk Utility). I've resurrected many discs this way. b) installing the programs on the other computer and then copying the iWork folder to your computer.

    When the disk is starting to die it can be bad for a moment and then be good for a while. If there was no problem while you were checking it of course it shows up good.
    I tell you those are the signs of a disk that is about to die.

  • Kernal Panic after update to 10.4.6/Missing HD Space/Won't Startup from DVD

    Sorry to lump three problems together, but they may all be related.
    First - I was getting random Kernal Panics while at 10.4.5, so I attempted to update to 10.4.6. The computer wouldn't even come close to starting up. I got a screen full of Kernal Panic info. I reinstalled Tiger 10.4.3, and that's where the system stands now. It's running fine.
    Second - My computer suddenly announced that the startup drive was out of disk space. I looked and the window said 30g. I closed the window and opened it again only to see it at zero k. I dumped some items to get some disk space, but now I can't get my 30g back.
    Third - I want to startup from the Tiger disk like I did when I reinstalled, but it won't startup from the DVD. I'd like to run Disk Repair on the main hard drive. It showed some errors when I ran a Test using the Disk Utility.
    I'm hoping this is all related. The computer seems to be running fine, but I can't update or find my missing space. Any advice I can get on these issues would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Is your computer saving a panic.log after each of the kernel panics? You can see by opening Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and looking for it. I'm not at my Mac now, so I can't tell you under what section to look for that log.
    When you try to boot from the CD, are you holding down the 'C' key as the computer reboots? You can also try rebooting with the Option key pressed, which will present you with a list of bootable volumes. It will also give you access to the Apple Hardware Test (if this is the DVD that came with the computer). If you can select the Apple Hardware Test, I'd recommend doing the Extended Test, which will test the hardware, including the RAM.
    For the disappearing disk space, you could have some process that is going bezerk and filling up the log files. In any event, to see where you disk space is being used, download and run Omni DiskSweeper.

  • Flash Application for Mac won't open from DVD disc

    I've created a Flash application for a Mac and I have the latest security fix/update for Flash (that was supposed to fix Flash Players and etc.). I've burned the file onto a CD and a DVD. The file plays/opens from the CD but it won't play from the DVD.
    Has anyone run into this before?

    Well I found some sort of solution. I was burning both discs from a PC. I finally burned the DVD from a Mac and now it works!

  • Intel Mac Mini crash.  Restore from TimeMachine failed.  Reinstall from DVD failed

    I am at a loss.  My Mac Mini (Intel 2.53ghz, 10.6.7, 4gb RAM) froze today.  Mouse would still move the cursor, but nothing responded.  After letting it go for perhaps a half hour, waiting for a chance to get control back or to perhaps relaunch Finder, I gave up and turned it off by holding down the power button.  On reboot, it would not make it past the startup screen.  I inserted the restore DVD that came with this Mac Mini, it booted from the DVD and I tried reinstalling OSX 10.6 from the DVD.  It proceeded to around 30% install and crashed.  I turned it off again, started up again form the DVD, and went into Disk Utility.  I verified the internal HD and it had no errors and nothing to repair.  This time I went directly to a restore from my TimeMachine backup.  (I had actually installed one new program today, and in case that program was the issue I chose a restore from the morning a few hours before that new program was added.)  The restore progressed to 86.6%, then crashed.  I saved the installer log to an external drive.
    I took a few hours away from it, but came back after a few hours.  I attempted to boot from the DVD again, and it would not get beyond the Apple sreen.  I turned it off by holding down the power button, unplugged the power supply, and searched online for around 30 minutes.  After finding little online, I booted from the DVD again, this time succesfully, and am currently running a TimeMachine restore again which I started after I began typing this entry because, honestly, when I started typing this I didn't think it would boot from the DVD again.  At the moment, the resotre is at 12.7%, but considering it crashed at 86.6% last time, I'm not too hopeful.
    Any thoughts or advice?  I'm not totally freaked out as I keep all documents on two external drives and backed up, in addition to having a 2tb TimeMachine drive with this system, all connected by fw800.  But... it's not like I don't want to get this Mac Mini working again.  It's from November 2009 an I don't have Apple Care for it, which I suppose means they'll charge me a fortune if I take it in.   (I'm grateful to have this 11.6" MacBook Air to work on.)
    Until Disk Utility told me that the internal drive was okay, I was thining I should try sticking a new hd inside and reinstalling from there.  Not sure what to do if this TimeMachine restore fails.  (at 18.5% now.)

    Thanks for responding.  I forgot to come here and delete this thread.  As it turned out, I switched from trying to use the OSX Install disc that came with the Mac Mini and instead used a Snow Leopard retail dvd.  That disc worked perfectly.  Pretty disturbing that the dvd that came with the computer would not work, while a store bought one worked.  Glad I bought a retail version of OSX to hackintosh a dell mini or I wouldn't havebeen able to fix this.

    So my PB 15 won't boot. It gets to the Gray apple screen, hangs up, then gives me a blue screen with a mouse arrow. I tried to boot with the dvd-hold down the c key. No luck, it won't boot from the dvd. I tried to choose a startup disk manually (hold down option key) but I get e screen with a lock and a password box. When I type in my PW-I get nothing.
    I am a little feaked-I ned to pull te data down to another machine if I can't get it to boot, but it won't even boot from the dvd.

    The open firmware password can be reset reset and changed by any administrator user, as designated in the Accounts preferences, via physical access to the inside of the computer, or when the computer is started up in Mac OS 9.
    Follow these steps:
    1. Open the Open Firmware Password application. Note, For Mac OS X v10.4.x, you must use the updated version that can be copied from the software installation disc (located at /Applications/Utilities/ on the disc).
    2. Click the icon to authenticate. Enter an administrator username and password when prompted.
    3. Click Change.
    4. Click to select the checkbox for "Require password to change Open Firmware settings".
    5. Type your password in the Password and Verify fields.
    6. Click OK. A confirmation appears.
    7. Click lock icon to prevent further changes.
    8. Choose Quit from the application menu.

  • MS-6728 won't boot from DVD drive?

    I have a MS-6728 motherboard with bios v2.5 that won't boot from a bootable DVD disk. Here's what I've tried so far:
    - Made sure the DVD drive was the first one in the BIOS boot device list.
    - Tried two different DVD drives. One plain DVD drive. The other was a DVD dual layer writer. Both were PATA.
    - Booted the DVD from three other machines to confirm it's not the DVD disk. It worked fine on all of them.
    - Put the DVD drive from one of the machines that booted it correctly into the MS-6728 machine. That didn't fix the problem.
    - Removed all drives except the PATA DVD drive and one SATA hard drive. No luck.
    - Booted the MS-6728 machine from a bootable CD. That worked it was a Windows XP Pro install CD.
    The DVD is a Debian install DVD BTW. Also I tried it each time by doing the F11 (select boot device) and just letting the BIOS auto detect everything. Each time I see a quick flash of "boot record not found" but I know the DVD is bootable since it worked with three other machines. The DVD was made from a ISO image downloaded from the net. I have booted the machine several times before from CDs.
    I'm wondering if the BIOS only supports bootable CDs and not bootable DVDs?
    Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

    How many IDE controllers does you board have? If it has more than 2, make sure that the DVD drive is connected to Intel controller and not Promise Controller.

  • IWorks will not install from DVD.

    I am trying to install iWorks from DVD (my second copy from Amazon as the first did exactly the same thing). The DVD drive does not seem to read/recognise the DVD and ejects it after about 1 minute. DVD drive does not have any problems reading any other CDs/DVDs.
    Is there a setting I need to adjust in System Preferences or a software download ? Or is there a batch of 'duff' iWork disks out there ?
    Any assistance gratefully received.

  • Mac Mini won't boot from dvd

    I just picked up a used Mac Mini and the previous owner didn't wipe the hard drive. He did include the original install disks in the package, though. I inserted the install disk & it says that OS X Tiger can't be installed on the mini (currently it is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8). I tried to boot from DVD but if I hold down the c key, nothing happens and it boots to the HD like normal. If I hold down the option key, the only boot option shown is the HD. I don't get any request for a password, so this mini doesn't appear to have a firmware password set. The DVD drive appears to be functioning fine since it can read the DVD - I just can't boot from it. If I use the Startup disk utility the only option shown once again is the HD. I even tried upgrading to Mavericks, but get an error message that it can't be installed on this mini (I checked the requirements and this machine meets them - running 10.6.8, at least 2 Gig ram, 1.83 GHz Core 2 duo, 60 Gigs free space on the drive.......
    I want to do a clean install but am at a loss on how to do so. Any suggestions?

    You can't install an older version of OS X on top of a newer version. You would have to erase the disk first.

    Make sure you're using disk# 1 of 2 of the two gray disk set., and that you hold the C key down for enough time, the boot process from the DVD is much slower than from a hard drive. However, since you have Snow Leopard installed now, there is no point in trying to install Tiger, unless he didn't give you his Admin password; you wouldn't be able to add yourself as a new user or delete his user name without knowing the admin password.
    If you did get Tiger installed, then you would have to buy a copy of Snow Leopard on DVD.
    I checked the requirements and this machine meets them - running 10.6.8, at least 2 Gig ram, 1.83 GHz Core 2 duo, 60 Gigs free space on the drive.......
    Those aren't the complete requirements. It has to be an Early 2009 MacMini, Model Identifier number 3.1, to be compatible with Mavericks. Click on the Apple Menu's, "About This Mac," More Information, then System Report, to locate that information.

  • My 27" iMac Freezes, Won't boot from DVD

    My iMac has started to freeze up every few minutes.  Every so often, it becomes unresponsive; the mouse cursor still moves (sometimes it turns into a beach ball), but I can't click or type anything.  Whenever this happens, the hard drive begins to churn as if it's reading or writing something big.  This usually lasts only about thirty seconds to a minute, but it's happening with frustrating regularity. 
    I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few days, now.  I'll walk you through the steps I've tried so far. 
    I ran a check on the hard drive with Disk Utility.  This came back with a message about the files/directories not matching up with their expected counts.  The solution it suggested was to boot from a Snow Leopard disc and let Disk Utility run a Repair Disk while the startup drive is not mounted.  It was at this point that I realized that I couldn't boot from the dvd.  Whether holding 'C' or 'Option', when it tries to boot from the disc, it gets to the Apple logo and then hangs. 
    I kept researching and found a workaround; boot into Single User Mode and perform fsck, which fixed the Disk Utility error, but did not solve the freezes/noises, and I still can't boot from the dvd. 
    Any ideas?

    Well, I'm not sure if I explained it clearly.  Holding the Option key does indeed bring up a list of bootable devices.  The problem arises when control is passed to the Snow Leopard disc.  The Apple logo flashes, I can hear the optical drive being accessed, but then it locks up. 
    I should also clarify that it's not the disc that came with the iMac.  I just moved and can't find the original disc, so I borrowed my neighbor's (which came from a Macbook he bought after mine (which I bought last year)).  I am under the impression that Macs can't boot from discs that are older than the version of OS X that they shipped with.  I wouldn't think that's the issue, here, as his came out later than mine, but I've still got a lot to learn about life in the Appleverse. 
    My data should be safe--I've got an up to date Time Machine backup on an external drive.  The performance issues aside, I'm really looking to understand the underlying problem(s) here. 
    So, one option is that the RAM might be bad.  I can test that by swapping out each DIMM and checking if the problem is resolved.  One thing I don't understand, though, is why bad RAM would manifest as the hard drive being accessed.  Is there a definitive way to test the logic board, as there is for testing RAM? 
    Also, I keep thinking of other little syptoms which may or may not be related. 
    Recap of Symptoms: 
    Magic Mouse occasionally loses its magic (right click, multitouch, etc.) and needs to be turned off and on. 
    Free disk space fluctuates by as much as eight gigs (without my intervention). 
    System stalls (accompanied by HD access sounds) multiple times per hour. 
    Can't boot from dvds (though, this could be a version problem). 
    **Fixed:  Disk Utility Verify Disk error. 
    I do understand that this might be a hardware error, and I certainly know how much trouble that sort of thing is to find/fix.  I'm definitely willing to open the case and swap out DIMMs and drives, but not until I've exhausted my software solution options.  *crosses fingers* 

  • Won't boot from DVD no matter how I try

    After verifying my HD with Disk Utility, I had a message claiming the volume is corrupted.
    I tried to boot from Install DVD, but it won't : either pressing "C" or Option, or selecting DVD in Pref > Start-Up.
    It freezes on the Apple logo after chiming and searching briefly the CD driver, which buzzes normally, then goes idle.
    Apple sent me a replacement DVD, thinking the install original DVD was corrupted. It re-booted correctly just ince with the replacement DVD, and never again.
    Mac Book Pro is almost new (bought in may).

    Could very well be an anomaly with your SuperDrive.
    I recently had a similar problem. My DiskWarrior DVD would not show up on my screen nor would DiskWarrior launch after restart with "c" key depressed. My installation disk DVD showed on my screen and worked as did other DVDs but not DiskWarrior. (?????)
    I took my MBP to a genius bar and the DVD did appear on the tech's machine's screen.
    Diagnosis > SuperDrive problem. Was then sent in for repair where SuperDrive was replaced. Problem solved.
    Get thee to a genius bar. Yeah, I know, it sucketh and is a PITA.

    We bought a new Unibody MBP on Monday, and loaned it to our CTO for a presentation. Having got it back from him now I wanted to nuke the installation and put a fresh copy of leopard on it, so I dropped the DVD in the drive, powered down, and booted holding the "C" key.
    I get the chime, screen lights up, thinks for a bit, and if you use your imagination you can almost hear the DVD spin up. Then the screen goes black, lights up, chime, thinks a bit, goes black, lights up, chime and so on
    I've tried booting from an external bootable clone I created with CCC (firewire external HDD), and same symptoms.
    I even tried swapping in a hard drive that I know has a working bootable copy of Leopard on it, and then all I get is the eternal cycle, without pressing any keys on startup.
    I also tried holding down the Option (Alt) key on boot to get the boot device selector. This correctly identifies the various boot devices - the DVD, on-board HDD and external firewire drive (if connected), and lets you select them, tries to boot, thinks, black screen, screen lights up, chime, repeat cycle endlessly until extremely frustrated.
    Is there a known cure for this or am I doomed to take the thing back to the Apple store on Monday?

    So you are saying even if the driver for the controller on which the DVD drive sits is not available in the Leopard DVD you are using because the hardware was not manufactured at the time the Leopard release on the DVD was made, the OS should magically just boot? Also - what should happen if the new hardware happens to be the controller on which the DVD drive is sitting? How will it be able to read the DVD? What about the graphics card? If the drivers on the old leopard disk do not recognize the new graphics card - how is the OS going to display on screen?
    On my way home, I stopped at a Mac store and asked them to test this. They successfully booted a new Macbook Pro unibody from an older Leopard DVD. And this is why Apple is replacing my computer, because it is a hardware issue, not a software one.
    Again - you fail to understand that whether or not the old DVD boots on a new machine all depends on how much hardware has changed and what hardware has changed. It may boot on some generation of machine because the basic chipset and graphics did not change or were handled generically by the drivers on the older DVD but it may totally refuse to boot on new gen machine which has totally different / incompatible hardware.
    So your claim that any old Leopard DVD must continue to boot on any new machine is not really technically explainable.

  • BRAND NEW LENOVO K300 5316 1BU (WON'T BOOT FROM DVD SUPERJULTI DRIVE/CD-W​RITER

    Would appreciate info from the Lenovo Community as to what might be the problem and a fix.
    I just received my new Lenovo K300 5316 1BU. As one of the first tasks I made a Lenovo Repair Disc.
    To test my disc I rebooted my computer with disc in drive. During reboot I pressed F12 to get to the proper menu.
    I chose the cd/dvd drive as the first boot option. It showed that the drive was recognized stating Boot Priority but then went directly into my Windows 7 deskop.
    I called Tech Support and tried everything with them with the same results.
    They instructed me to do a complete System Restore to see if that corrects the problem.
    I have not done this yet since I will do a backup of my present setup, not to loose all my hard work and time setting up all my programs and settings.
    Before I do a complete system restore I would appreciate any comments or suggestions from the community regarding this situation.
    Do you also believe that doing a full system restore will help or should I send this computer back? 
    I do find it hard to believe that a computer less than a week old would have this problem with the DVD Supermulti Drive /CD writer.
    If I still have no success after a full restore or a resolve from the Lenovo IdeaCentre Community then I will return this computer back to TigerDirect.
    To conclude I would like to mention the following regarding this brand new Lenovo K300 5316 1BU top of the line desktop computer.
    One of the reasons I purchased this particular desktop was because of the Lenovo Windows 7 ENHANCED operating system that Lenovo has been advertising so much.
    To my surprise and disappointment, this BRAND NEW Lenovo Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit does not have the Enhance version, it is Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit only.
    Apparently, Lenovo is making some with Enhanced and some without.
    Finally, another reason I purchased the 1BU version is because it has a TV Tuner.
    To my surprise again, the TV Tuner card in this model does not have an FM Tuner, which almost all TV Tuner Cards have. So, as a result, no FM Radio with Windows 7 Media Center.

    What brand DVD drive did you install? Some third-party drives won't boot by holding down the C key at startup, because they lack the Apple/OEM drive's ROM programming. I recently installed a Memorex (manufactured by LG) DVD burner in a B&W G3, which is recognized by Toast and (with PatchBurn) the iApps. The compatibility problem occurs when selecting a CD/DVD as the startup disk using the Startup Disk Preferences/control panel or by holding down the C key during the restart. In either case, the drive ejects the disk during the POST, so that I have to immediately close the tray and hold down the C key again, to persuade it to boot from the disk. Is this similar to what you're experiencing?
