IWorks Search

Does anyone have an issue with their "open existing file" search function? If I create a document using pages, numbers, or keynote, I can search for it using finder or spotlight but not with the search feature under "open existing file" window of iWorks. Is this an issue with iWorks?

Hi Sae Ro,
There are no issues with "iWorks," unless you consider non-existence an issue. The application suite is called "iWork" (no 's').
I tried several searches with the Open dialogue in Pages '09 tonight, and got the expected results.
When I searched file names, any file openable by Pages whose name included the search string showed up in the list.
When I searched using a files extension (.pages, ,cwk, ,doc, etc.) I got lists of files IF the extension belonged to a type of file that Pages can open, and no results when the extension belonged to a type of file (.numbers, .xls) not openable with Pages.

Barry

  • Spotlight search / iWork search

The situation: I type a search-string into Spotlight search. Spotlight procudes a list of objects containing that search-string. The object I'm interested in is listed in Spreadheets. I open the spreadsheet by clicking the spreadsheet name in Spotlight ...
What I expect is that the Edit > Find > Search field in Numbers is pre-populated with the search-string I had typed into Spotlight; that's why I opened the spreadsheet in the first place, ... to find that piece of text! Am I missing something?
I'm intending to use the Feedback site http://www.apple.com/feedback/ to suggest this, but in case it is a feature which already exists, and I don't know how to access it, I thought I would ask here first.
    Thanks for your help, Andrew

Thanks Wayne. Following your response I have now submitted my feedback to Apple.

  • IWork from old to new Mac, problem occurred.

    Greetings,
iWork I have bought years ago on CD and installed on MB-Pro.
    Now I have a MB-Air.
Since the Air has no CD/DVD player I transferred iWork from Pro to Air.
Starting up Pages (i.e.) on the Air I get this message:
I can't find the installer (also through a search. iWork search gives: iWork folder containing: Keynote, Numbers, Pages apps)
The DVD player of the Pro is broken.
I rather not repurchase or buy an update.
I rather not Download due expenses ($40.00 per GB) (Sitting in a cafe or neighbour i.e. to Download is not an option)
Is there a solution to get iWork working properly from this situation?
    Thanks!

I never wrote that applications can't be updated when they are stored in a non standard location.
I wrote that iWork applications, when delivered as a single package, must be stored together in a given folder for such process.
At this time they weren't delivered as single separated apps but as a package.
In fact this feature apply only to iWork '09.
It's because for this package, updaters applied to the three embedded applications.
Only the late update was a Keynote only one.
For iWork '08, there were separated updaters for each applications so, installing them out of their original folder wasn't a problem.
The fact that you forget to copy the resources when you wanr to work from an other system is not an Apple problem, it's yours.
I repeat that you were wrong and that you didn't understood what you were writing about, because the shared folder, the one which must be copied, is not the one which you described with :
upon first run, the app creates its folder in Application Support if need be.
    The shared folder:
    Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:iWork '09:
    or
    Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:iWork '09:
is not created at application's first launch, it's created by the installer during the installation process.
The one which you described is :
    Macintosh HD:Users:<userAccount>:Library:Application Support:iWork:
For someone understanding the way iWork is installed, the copy process is perfectly neat and clear.
It is more efficient than installing then apply the required updates which, to be up to date require :
    install iWork
    apply iWork update9.1
    apply keynote update 5.1.1

  • How do I search iWork documents on my iPad?

I have dozens of Numbers files and when I search they are not returned, also no option in Spotlight to index iWork docs.

I think you answered your own question. I do not use Numbers but I do use Pages. There is no way to search the files in Pages either. You can sort the documents by name or by date. I imagine that Numbers works the same way. What you see is what you get in Spotlight. You cannot add new categories to the search function.

  • Pages says to upgrade, I searched forums and saw it's an iWork conflict. The problem is, I've never had iWork.

So, I can't delete the file tree specified. Yes, I've looked under Applications/iWork and Applications/Pages.
    Thoughts?

The App Store plays a role in application version determination, and related update messages. It depends on a fresh Spotlight index of your boot drive to avoid internal confusion.
Look in System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy panel. If the icon for your boot drive appears in the list, select it, and press the minus button to remove it from this panel, and resume Spotlight indexing of your boot drive. This will take awhile, and things may slow down slightly.
After an hour, see if the Pages v5.1 update request has stopped.

  • IWork 08 & document type in Spotlight search

Pages documents are listed in the Finder as 'SLDocumentTypeNativeDocument' under kind in the list when listed as a Spotlight search.I am not sure if this is only on my machine

Nevermind. Problem Solved. The next time I quit the programs and relaunched them, and they said they needed to be updated. I ran the updater and the problems seem to have been fixed.

  • Spotlight text search inside iWork 08

A quick test finds that Spotlight does not find text inside a Pages document. Whereas it will find text inside many other formats, including PDF files.
Is this really the case? Or maybe it's just my machine?
Similarly, Spotlight used to be able to find text inside MS Word documents on my machine. That functionality subsequently disappeared.
So what is the score with Spotlight & iWork08?
    Go well!
    David

For Spotlight to index content there has to be an mdimporter for that content type. If the files are in fact plain text, it is possible to do a bit of hacking to get them indexed, see this discussion at MacOSXHints:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050514182520714&query=mdimport
Be sure to read the comments! And don't do it without a current clone of your system on an external drive that is NOT attached when you try this out (if you do try it).

  • I bought the wrong Iwork

I bought the single user Iwork on line and I was wondering if i can return it. Will I be able to return it with a full refund? or i will i be charged for anything? thanks.

    Hello
If I remember well, some days ago, someone gave a link from which you may "upgrade" from a single user license to a family one.
I have no spare time to use the search tool for that but you may do that yourself with the keyword "family".

  • After I have reset my network settings to clear a previous problem, the top left corner just stays at 'searching' and doesn't display my service carriers name as usual.

After doing the network reset on my iphone 4, the top left corner of the screen which usually displays my carriers name just keeps saying 'searching'. I have tried looking elsewhere at this site for a solution to my problems but I'm still coming up empty.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • How can I buy an older version of iwork for my macbook?

I am thinking about buying a new macbook pro as my current macbook is approaching 7 years ol.  I replace the hard drive in January to 640gb and upgraded the ram to maximum possible of 4ghz.  I was running an old version of MS Office for Mac 2004 which was not great and I figured i would try using the mac versions before spending nearly £2k on a new machine.  But I can't seem to buy it on the store because I apparently need to have OSx 1.7 or higher and I am running 10.6.  Any ideas?

Upgrade Office to Office 2011 for OS X. You can download a trial at www.mactopia.com. Old versions of iWork boxed sets can be found searching Amazon, eBay, or Google.
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
    NeoOffice
    Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
    Keynote - presentation
    Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)

  • Had to uninstall iWork trial since I bought the pages app and it wouldn't let me print or save.  Now the app store says I have pages installed but I can't find it anywhere to open and use it.  I'm not very computer savvy and am getting frustrated!

Ooops, guess I didn't need to post everything in the title - sorry!  I bought the pages app - but couldn't save or print so with some online searching found that I had to uninstall the iWork trial which had expired.  I did that - but now I can't figure out how to re-install the pages app!!  The app store says it's installed, but I can't find it anywhere to open and use it.  I'm not very computer savvy - and am a first time Mac user and am getting extremely frustrated!  I e-mailed some help center and they can't seem to help me either.  I would appreciate any help/advice that can fix my problem - thanks in advance!!

OK Apple has stuffed up the demo version upgrade process so the first thing you need to do is get rid of the demo.
That includes getting rid of the files in the system.
The instructions how to do that are here:
Note That where you see / that is the sequence of folders, each nested inside each other.
    User/Library/Preferences the com.apple.iwork.Keynote.plist
Means the User (you, the little home icon, whatever you are called on your computer) then the Library folder inside that and then the Preferences folder inside that.
Lion initially hides the System folders from you so you have to go to the Finder > Menu > hold down the option key and click on GO > Library to see it.

  • Keynote (and other iWork apps) not saving properly!

    Hi all
I have had some strange problems over the last few weeks where I get messages telling me that iWork (usually Numbers) cannot save the files as 'something else' is using the file.  So I click 'save anyway' and I get strange files in folders, ie folder and file name is the original name plus some gooblygook.
I have got round this by deleting the 'extras' and carrying on.  But now I am preparing a major presentation in Keynote and suddenly it is not saving graphics some of the time!
For example I was working on a slide - and suddenly got a message that 'some problems occured' -
    Couldn’t save image. - image.png (Slides: 12, 13, 17, 18; Skipped slide count: 1)
    Couldn’t save image. - image.png (Slides: 12, 13, 17, 18; Skipped slide count: 1)
I have been working with this presentation for some time and have never encountered any problems - passing between my laptop and my iPad to review and modify (mainly viewing on the iPad and editing on the MacBook).
Any ideas what is happening?  I have a major presentation to give in just over a week and I don't want to use PowerPoint!
    Thanks
    Ian

I've been having some success NOT using any files that have previous images or audio in them, starting from a base template and then adding audio and video and photos that are already on my hard drive, not previous Keynote files. Today I needed five slides that were part of another deck and, you guessed it, they were corrupted (or missing) when I reopened the file, only the thumbnails remaining.
I closed the original Keynote file, placed a zip extension, then control- clicked to see the contents. The images were missing from the package. I then replaced the extension with .key and reopened in Keynote. The audio file had been there but not the images or the drawing, which I then searched for.
Yes, delete the weird file backups and make a backup of the original in the finder. Then lock it! (You're using Mountain Lion?)
I have a huge presentation tomorrow. I have five backups, including on a thumb drive.
    How much longer Apple?

  • Can I use iWork '09 on Lion without using new Lion features?

I do not wish to use the new features in Lion, primarily autosave, with iWork, at least initially.  In other words have iWork act as it would in S.L.   However, I need to purchase iWork in order to continue using a bunch of Appleworks spreadsheets.  I am using a new MBP with OS 10.7.1.  My plan is to purchase the hard copy iWork '09 from the Apple Store (the AppStore download versions have already been updated).  This CD should be some version of 9.0 as they have not put 9.1 on the CD.  My idea is to just not let the modules (Numbers, Pages, etc.) get updated until I am ready.  My question is -- will Numbers and Pages work properly on Lion without using the final update to the new Lion Features, and which updates to Numbers and Pages should I avoid?
    Any help is appreciated.

Alas, it's reactivated when we shutdown if we don't take care to uncheck the dedicated box.
More, if we ask to restart on an other device, we have no checkbox available to disable Resume.
Happily, it seems that pressing option during the shutdown process disable the beast.
