Ix4-300 fan keeps running full blast and the NAS never comes online

When I turn on the ix4-300 after a couple of seconds its fan starts running full blast but the NAS never comes online.  The NAS lcd was damaged in the move so I don't know what is going on, it was working fine for a couple of weeks (with the damaged lcd) but this started happening a few days ago.  Things that I've tried:
Used the other ix4-300 (I've 2) with the faulty NAS... same result
Let the NAS run with full FANS for 4 plus hours ......, Still didn't come online
Also both the blue and white light are constant .... no blinking whatsoever.
Any ideas ...

It could be the device itself. Is it covered by the warranty?
Are you concerned about retrieving the data or do you just want the device back up and running properly?
If you are not concerned about data, you can try the following procedure at your own risk:
Power down the device and reseat all the drives in the device. Power the device back on.
If this doesn’t allow unit to boot, continue with below process.
   1. Turn off the device and pull out all the drives.
   2. Place any other drive 2, 3 or 4 in the first slot and boot up the device.
   3. Wait for sometime as the boot-up process can be slow.
         a. If it doesn’t boot, try another disk in slot 1.
   4. If it boots up correctly, insert another disk in slot 2.
        - Check UI for disk detection.
        a. If second disk is detected, turn it off, place disk 3 and 4 in unit and boot up.
        b. If it doesn’t boot-up correctly, remove 3 or 4 and retry. You may need to try to determine if 3 or 4 is bad in this case.
   5. Recreate the volume if it doesn’t start regenerating automatically

My "big Mac" desktop's fan occasionally runs rather loudly and the top of the computer gets pretty warm.  This may last for several hours.  Is that normal and OK?

Please check the article below for details on finding activities that are using a high percentage of the CPU. You may need to check when the computer is actually running hot to catch the culprit.
Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity

  • My hard drive is randomly on full blast and the CPU at 50% usage...???

Out of the blue all of a sudden my hard drive goes to work at full capacity and the CPU is at 50% usage. iotop shows nothing. I close Chromium, Gedit, and my Terminal and the hard drive continues for a minute on full blast.
I hate when the computer does these things without my approval. What's going on here?

@ewaller: Exactly! iotop *should* show something but it doesn't. If it happens again, I'll have a look at the logs. Which logs should I look in?
@litemotiv and egan: Yeah, i know updatedb does this sometimes, but in this case it lasted much much longer and updatedb didn't show up in iotop like it normally does. Also, i've kept a very very detailed log of every single thing i've installed or which settings I've modified. This incident has only happened a few times so I don't think it's a package or a cronjob. I don't think i have any cron jobs except for one. Last time it happened randomly hours into my session.

  • Sleeping G5 often makes fans run full blast and machine unresponsive

the only thing new lately is that I installed Leopard 10.5.3 on my dual 2.0 GHz G5 tower.
I usually sleep my machine all the time
now it's a crapshoot whenever I sleep it whether or not it will go to sleep normally, or freeze in a state of screenless unresponsiveness with the fans running on full blast with no way to stop except a hard shut down or power kill
other than this the machine is literally working just fine. Never interferes with my work.
I don't know if this is 10.5.3 related or not, but I do wonder.
I started up from an applecare disc and did a full diagnostic and everything checked out
I guess I'll have to test Tiger sometime again but that'll be a pain because I'm already addicted to Leopard
I just hope this old faithful tower isn't going dead on me. and I wish there was some official word if this was just a 10.5 thingy

I believe I have solved this problem for now.
I opened up my G5 and used compressed air to blow out all the months of dust buildup in the machine.
I re-seated every single removable component inside (RAM, PCI cards, graphics card, etc)
I also pushed the PMU reset button once and then put the machine back together.
I proceeded to sleep it and wake it up about 5 times in a row, and it didn't exhibit the blowing fans problem and the light was "snoring" as it normally should in sleep mode.
A few days later, the machine hung up after being put to sleep AGAIN with the fans kicking up and the light on my cinema display staying one dim level without the "snoring."
This time I disconnected my Belkin USB hub and I have not seen the problem resurface since.
The interesting thing is that cleaning out the machine and resetting the PMU sure seemed to help.
So maybe it was a combination of things that were the culprits.
I also wonder if I can ever use this perfectly good and only 1 year old Belkin USB 2.0 hub ever again.
My father uses the same model on 10.5.4 as well on his MacPro without any problems. I am on a G5.
I wonder if there's a firmware on the Belkin USB hub that could be in need of upgrading or if I simply cannot use this hub w/ this computer anymore.
(luckily I don't need it urgently right now)
I will report back if the problem happens again, but for now, since the computer has been sleeping totally fine for days now since removing the USB hub, I am marking this question as answered and hope that this info can help other people.
If anyone has anything to add to this thread or knows about the specifics I've discussed above, please feel free to respond more.
    Thank you

  • Fans running full blast and CPU

    Hi,
I have a late 2003, early 2004 dual 2.0 ghz G5,1 gig ram running OS x 10.4.7. Everything has been fine up until a few weeks ago the fans started running at full speed when the system was on, no variation, just full speed. I ran the hardware test disc and I get the following error, 28 seconds into the test,----2SAM/1/3:CPU B AD 7417 AD4 post/2176/0---
I have talked to a service centre close by and they have told me that the CPU is bad and needs replacemwnt to correct the fan problem. Everything runs normally as it used to, sleep, wake, all function fine. Do I need a new CPU or is their something else causing the problem??

    Hi DS,
Thank you for your quick reply and insight.
I do not have the full version of Hardware Monitor as of yet, just ordered it tonight so will have it very soon and then will be able to have full info. The demo version gives me the following info.
    1) CPU A die temp--28.8 degrees celsius
    2) CPU B Die Temp--29.1 degrees "
    3) Drive Bay-------24.0 degrees "
    4) Main Logic Board air inlet---24.0 degrees "
    5) Main Logic Board ambient--27.6 degrees "
    6) Main logic board backside--27.0 degrees "
    7) Memory controller heatsink--31.8 degrees "
    8) Processor Card A Ambient---26.5 degrees "
    9) Processor Card B Ambient---26.0 Degrees "
    10) Smart Disc Temp----26.0 degrees"
This is after the system has been running for the better part of an hour with the room temp. at 65 degrees Fahenheight. Programs running at the same time that these temperatures where taken are as follows-- Quark express, Garage Band, Aperature, MS word, Illustrator 10,Firefox, Filemaker Pro. With all those programs running activity monitor for CPU reads as follows--
    % user--3.5
    % system--2.0
    % nice--O
    % idle---94.5
System memory shows as having 330 mb free at the same time
Fan speed is a constant " turbo" sound, no variation in speed or sound, very loud.
It would seem that as you have suggested that I am getting a false reading from the Apple Hardware test as all readings seem to OK.What do you suggest that I try to do to bring the fan speed down to a normal level? It would seem that the dual CPU's are OK and that something else is causing the problem?? Would you agree? Appreciate any help that you can suggest.
    Thanks Much
Machine is a 2.0 ghz ,dual processor G5, I gig memory, ATI video, model #-M9032ll/A, late 2003, early 2004 production.

  • Just upgraded on 2010 iMac - now fans keep running full out

I just upgraded to Yosemite on my 2010 iMac 27" i7. Since installing, I have shut down and restarted the computer twice due to the fans in the machine running full out out of nowhere. The air coming out of the top of the machine is relatively cool, and I don't think that heat is the issue but something to do with the system update. The machine runs fine for a while, and then the fans start up a few minutes after it runs. Looking at the activity monitor, I can find no process that is running a processor rampant, nor anything else that I can tell that might be causing all of this.
Has anyone else had a similar problem to this? Any proposed solutions, or diagnostic steps to ferret out the problem?
    -John

New update: I have indeed found something new. I rad Apple Hardware Diagnostics, the more in-depth test, which revealed that a temperature sensor is not functioning properly:
    Error Code: 4SNS/1/C0000008: TA0P--124
The funny thing is that this was not an issue prior to updating to 10.10. I have tried out a few fan control programs and have experimented with them as well. So far I have found that if I attempt to modify the fan speed once the issue develops, no amount of software coaxing will slow the fans down. Also, even before the fans run, all of the temperature sensors are reading within normal parameters. Once the fans run, they still are all at normal or below normal parameters. There is no reading on any sensor indicating that it is not working or reading out of range. Here are two screen shots taken before the issue develops, and right after:
At this point, in a few weeks, I will open the machine and check the connections for the sensors and rule out a connection issue. I still think it may be software related, however. Does anyone have more suggestions for me to try? Thanks in advance.
    -John

  • What if i send the security question reset thing to my rescue email and the email never comes?

I go to the setting and go to security and press the recur email thing for the security questions and a email for apple never comes ? I tried it 3 times and refreshed my email no emails have come yet.

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include clicking here and picking a method for your country, phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

  • When I use my computer for any amount of time all of a sudden the fan starts up full blast and everything freezes

Nothing works after this happens its happened 3 times now, the first I just forced shut down and re started, the second I force shut down and left it off for the night, the third time I let it run like that for a bit to see if it would control itself but after a small amount of time I forced shut it down again.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • 2.3 G5 Crashes and Fans Running Full Blast

My work horse G5 dual 2.3 crashed today and the fans were running full blast.
I did some research and have:
    -run Disk Warrior
    -reset the PRAM
    -reset the SMU
-replaced the 3.6V battery with a $20 battery from Radio Shack.
The system still crashes, leaving the fans running a full speed. Then, I noticed that only 1 CPU is being recognized. :"(
Is there anything I can do to get the other CPU back up/ recognized or is it dead?
Is it feasible to buy a CPU off ebay to replace mine? If so, is it a straight forward operation or very tricky?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply and link, japamac. That thread didn't pop up in my search.
After following your link, I ran the Apple Hardware Test. The detailed test took right at an hour and a half (three times longer than it said) and returned no problems.
I restarted and both CPUs showed up in the Activity Monitor and things were fine for about 20 minutes, then the system simply froze, while I was running Safari and Firefox. But, no loud fans this time.
Upon a hard restart and then a soft restart, I'm back to one CPU.
Since only one CPU is showing up, I don't have a faulty one to deselect (I installed the "Processor" System Preference from the Developer>Extras>PreferancePane) or disable via Terminal.
So, I've got a couple of questions:
    1. Where are the error logs that I should look at?
I've opened the Console, but can find no mentions of "panic" or "cpu," other than some 3 year old references under "Java."
    2. More importantly, *how do I know +which CPU+ has failed*?
    I see no references to "CPU 1" or "B" or "0" or "A." It's as if I've suddenly got a Single 2.3 G5.
    3. Any possibility that this is a software issue?
I'm wondering if a recent update of Safari could somehow be a culprit. I had it open and also had Firefox open, both with 10-12 tabs. I know they can be memory and processor hogs.
Anyway, I will reseat the CPUs and grab a serial number while in the process and report back after a while.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Fans running full blast.

Alright.. I was plugged into the wall with my MBP and I flipped my computer over to take out the battery to check the serial for the battery exchange thing. Then i flipped it back over and knocked off the magsafe connector off. So obviously, my computer shut off. I wasn't doing anything important, no biggie. But since it started up, my fans are running on full blast and I've never ever been able to hear my fans ever running before now.. Any ideas?

My first thought is that one of the two thermal sensors came unplugged with it being upside down/jerked; if so then it needs opening up and reconnecting by Apple. It shouldn't do this so warranty kicks in.
It might be worth resetting the power manger first though?

  • IMac fan keeps running despite resetting the SMC

My iMac fan keeps running loudly even when the computer isn't doing any thing, and I just started it up.
I have tried resetting the SMC and that didn't help.
I also recently had to insert a new hard drive instead of the old one that failed. I am thinking that either the SSD is just hotter than the old hard drive, or that the hard drive sensor is somehow inverted in the plug. Is there any way of testing the hard drive sensor to see if that is faulty, or to test the fan. When I look at the Activity Monitor the system is 87% idle...

Although you don't mention which imac you have since 2009 Apple has used hard drives with the temp sensor built in. When replacing one of these late model drives you have to use the same type hard drive or you get fans running all the time because the temp sensor isn't detected. You might want to try some third party software such as iStat Menus, SMC Fan Control or HDD a Fan Control. Google them for reviews.

  • GeForce 8800 GT Fan running full blast

    Hey there folks,
I have a Mac Pro (early 2008, MacPro 3,1) with the OEM Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT graphics card.
Last night when I got home from work I booted up the machine and the fan on the 8800 came on full blast, it has always done this for 3-4 seconds on boot and would then spin down again. The thing is this time it never spun down, it kept going full blast and has ever since. The card is not under heavy load and is cool to the touch. The fan keeps going full speed so long as the machine is on, regardless of activity. Only when it goes to sleep or is shut down does the fan stop.
I've tried resetting the PRAM, resetting the SMC, and even ran Apple Hardware Test and it returned no errors. I have iStat Menus installed but I don't believe it is capable of showing feedback on the card. I haven't been able to find much online about this issue and there are apparently no Mac versions of Nvidia's control and monitoring software for their cards.
I took it into the local Apple store today and the Genius Bar almost immediately told me its a flat-out replacement issue. The machine is out of coverage so ordering a new copy of the same card is expensive ($380). I've looked into other, newer cards like the ATI 5770 or 5870 through Other World Computing and they seem like good options.
Has anyone else come across this problem or know of a workable solution?

I replaced the card. At first I took it to the Apple Store but the person there said its basically just a somewhat common hardware failure on the card. Not much to do but repair or replace it.
Rather than spend the time and money to have them diagnose it further just to tell me the same thing I replaced it outright with a card from Other World Computing; the ATI Radeon HD 5770. IT was a good alternative for my machine which, due to it's hardware configuration, has only a few to pick from as viable replacements. It's been working fine so far, no complaints. Just be aware it is a BEAST of a card and puts out a lot of heat.

  • Random Overheating/Fans Running Full Blast

    Hi there,
Ever since I received my Early 2008 Mac Pro a couple of months ago, it would randomly begin blowing the fans at full blast and continue to do so no matter which OS I boot to, Mac OS X, Windows, or even Linux discs. iStat Pro reads that my Northbridge is running at 249º F, which is completely ridiculous, since all of the internal components to the machine are running very cool. This Northbridge sensor is appearing to throw the fans into overdrive. It sounds like I'm working next to a vacuum cleaner. It's very loud and irritating to work next to.
Unfortunately for me, I don't live near an Apple store, or have the means to get to one. Apple also will not let me send in my machine. About a month ago I had the chance to drop my machine off at an Apple store, but the geniuses were very confused about the problem. 2 Weeks later I received a phone call explaining that my problem was fixed. They never explained to me how the problem was fixed. I had a friend drive out to the Apple store and pick up my machine for me, but when I turned it back on, it still ran full blast. Nothing was different.
I came back from work one day and to my surprise the machine was completely silent. It has been randomly going from full blast fan speed to normal fan speed ever since, fixing itself every few days. I have 0% CPU usage at all times, yet the machine thinks it's overheating.
So now I ask you, Apple Discussions Board members, what can I do to resolve this annoyance? I have:
    Reset PRAM
    Reinstalled Mac OS X
Unplugged the computer for days on end
    Swapped Hard Drives
    Taken RAM out
    Tried SMCFanControl
Taken out that little CR2032 battery on the mainboard
And no luck. Help is appreciated!

Yesterday I popped in my disc and did an Apple Hardware Test. It passed with flying colors after hanging up and appearing frozen for 10 minutes. Found that little button behind riser A and pushed it for 5 seconds, rebooted a few times, unfortunately it did not work.
Also where is the Apple Hardware Monitor? Are you sure you don't mean Activity monitor? I couldn't find where the temperature/fan readings are in Activity Monitor.
The fans turned off, however, today when my computer woke up from sleep mode. They were off for about ten minutes when all of a sudden the fans kicked on full blast. This was strange because the computer would usually gradually increase over a 15 second period... not immediately. So now it's still stuck here, making noise :\

  • Powermac G5 Fans Running Full Blast

Hi, I read several posts about fans but do not have any crash or freeze issues associated with the fans in my G5 server constantly running on high... Fans are on full blast for two days now, no software updates or hardware changes have been made to the server
Other than the Fans running the computer is working fine
    Here is what I have tried so far;
    • shut down and unplugged power cord for a few minutes
    • disconnected Ext FW drives
    • cleaned out dust from inside case (very little)
    • checked fan connection (dual fans)
    • reset SMU
    • tech tool pro test
None of the above has had any effect. The only thing that will shut the fans down is putting the server to sleep. Sleeping the computer knocks everyone off the server so that is not an option -
    Any ideas would be appreciated
    Thanks

A fan issue is usually related to the SMU. I see that you tried that, but if you used the +push the button on the motherboard+ method, try the +unplug the power cord+ method as described here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1436
under +Power Mac G5 (Late 2004)+. As stated, "wait two minutes." It does not say "at least" two minutes or "about" two minutes.
