J2ee on windows 2000 home edition ? installation problems.

(i) I am trying to install j2ee on windows 2000 home edition. It simply does not install. On careful look at the download website I find that j2ee is meant for 2000 pro only. Is there a way I can install j2ee on home edition ? or it is simply not supported by Java Tech.
(ii) I am actually trying to run an application (.jar). Is there a way I can run that application is j2ee is not supported on home edition ?
(iii) There is no error message when I try to install j2ee. I have downloaded the self extracting file meant for windows (j2eesdk-1_4-dr-windows-eval.exe). I double-click the icon for this file. It launches a small popup and displays... extracting...installing....deleting temp files....Thats all.... Nothing more. When I do the same process on 2000 pro........ it does exactly the same, but at the end it pops up a new window asking my preference for installation directory, and displays a lengthy procedure for installation.
Any help.
Thanks in advance,
Vivek Ranjan

You are most likely hitting this problem:
http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4887990.html
One way to workaround this would be to rename your distribution to .zip file, extract it using Winzip or similar utility into some temporary directory. Then run this from command prompt (you must first go to the directory where you unzipped the distribution):
package\jre\bin\java -cp .;package\PackageFormat.jar -Duser.home=<writable_temp_dir> -Xmx256m appserv
This will start install wizard - once you get past the installation bootstrap problem, J2EE SDK should run on Windows XP Home Edition.

I'm having a very serious problem. I am a user of a pc at home, not a business. I cannot enable Java. The download package installed and the Java Console settings are as recommended in the Help section. I have tried every suggestion and procedure without success. All the appropriate check boxes have been marked and security settings adjusted as required. No applets will run. Disabling my Norton antivirus and personal firewall doesn't help. Not even Norton's website locator will work. Has Microsoft done something to completely disable Java? I did find the Microsoft tech bulletin explaining their dispute with Sun and that they are removing Java from their products. However, shouldn't the Sun Java software still work?
Is it necessary to format my hard drive and do a complete clean install of Windows Xp Home to get this working again. Java used to work without a problem. However, after some automatic updates were installed about a month ago from Microsoft over the web, Java would not work anymore.
I enjoy the Java games and functionality. I'm totally frustrated and I don't know what to do. Your kind assistence would be greatly appreciated.

this might be hearsy (but it's getting more likely):
billy g made it so that installing sp1 on an xp machine would prevent installing java. Solution: clean install xp, install java, install sp1 (will not uninstall java). This is probably just as illegal as preventing windows installing onto DR-DOS (remember that?).

  • Installation 10g on Windows XP Home Edition

When I try to install 10g on my Windows XP Home Edition, I get a error message, "oui.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close." Whats that all about?

Windows XP Home is not a supported platform for Oracle. I have heard some people have been able to get it to work but usually not without a lot of tinkering. General rule of thumb -- Windows anything Home edition is not supported by Oracle. My suggestion is if you have the disk space, install VMware and put a Linux distro like Centos in it and install Oracle on that. Or go the dual boot route.

  • How may I eliminate all of iTunes from Windows XP Home Edition before making a "clean" installation of iTunes?

Hello.  I found that in Windows XP Home Edition that I had two subdirectories of iTunes: C:\Program Files\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes(2).  I assume this situation has arisen by me not properly updating iTunes in the past.  When it came time to update iTunes from one of the version 10.3s to version 10.4 of iTunes, I tried to do something about the pair of iTunes subdirectories.  Via Start, Control Panel, and Add or Remove Programs I "Remove"d the only listing of iTunes; that is iTunes(2) was not listed there.  But afterwards C:\Program Files\iTunes(2) still existed, as viewed in the program Windows Explorer.  Next while offline I installed iTunes10.4 by running the downloaded file iTunesSetup(4).exe in my case.  I chose C:\Program Files\iTunes(2) as the directory for installation.  Next I uninstalled iTunes via Add or Revmove Programs.  The directory C:\Program Files\iTunes(2) then still existed.  I need an iTunes cleanup utility, if there is one, or else a way to eliminate all vestiges of iTunes, including registry entries, from my Windows XP Home Edition.  [I think this situation is the opposite of a situation in which the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (WICU) would apply.  I think the WICU is useful when a program is visible by name in the Windows Add or Remove Programs list, but can't be removed by clicking on "Remove" in that list.]  [I also noticed the directory C:\Program Files\iPod(2).  Is that directory associated with iTunes(2)?]  After that I would hope that a fresh offline installation of iTunes 10.4 to my computer's hard-disk drive would result in only C:\Program Files\iTunes among iTunes subdirectories in C:\Program Files when viewed in Windows Explorer.  Please inform me how to reach this goal.  Thanks.

I'd also dig down into where your home user account holds temp files, as well as application preferences and support. I just know Vista began using \myaccount\AppData and multiple locations under there.
Apple leaves behind every past installer cache, support (imporant to get rid of that also).
The first thing I do (no iPod etc) is uninstall Bonjour and disable iPod and MobileMe.
Windows Uninstaller Cleanup Utility also use to be a must for stubborn "partially installed" apps.
When you are done, CCleaner and Registry.
Another place to clean is %TEMP% (may be different in XP).

  • Problem with PC Suite and Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit

I installed PC Suite on my desktop with Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit installed.  I was able to eventually run PC Suite (granted it needed to run in XP SP2 compatibility mode) and sync my calendar on my W518a cell phone with PC Suite via Bluetooth communications.  After I turned off my computer and restarted it, I could no longer open up PC Suite...its icon appears in my system tray with a red X over it as if it can't find the program.
The SonyEricsson website indicates PC Suite can run with Windows 7.
What is causing the problem I am having?  How do I get this corrected?

I have downloaded and reinstalled the PC Suite software.  Although it is not working as well as it should, as long as I have my cell phone on with Bluetooth enabled prior to clicking on the icon to open the application, it seems to work OK.  Otherwise, when it opens, it just hangs and the only way you can close the program is to get into Task Manager and force it closed when its status is showing as "Not Responding".  I also have found that just "closing" the PC Suite window does not close the application...you have to click on the option to "Exit the Application" otherwise you continue to have it in your system tray with a red X over the icon.

  • Error message downloading j2se 1.5.0 on windows XP home edition (SP2)

    Hello:
I am getting the following error message attempting to install the j2se 5.0 on my windows XP home edition (SP2):
    "Error JavaTM installer
The installer cannot continue because the files necessary for installation are unavailable. If trying to install a beta or older version please check http://java.sun.com/j2se to determine if it is still supported. If so please try installing at a later time as these file might be only temporarily unavailable."
    There is a bug report:

    Problem:
The installer throws error messages. I tried on three different
XP-Home (sp2) machines in our lab. It throws error message the very first or second time and after that, it seems to work fine.
    Steps to reproduce:
    1) On XP-Home(sp2) machine, try to download and install the JDK iftw bundle from
    http://webwork.sfbay/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
    2) During the installation the first or second time, one of the following messages thrown:
    A) "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and than you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"
    B) Error - Java Installer

If trying to install a beta or older version, please check http://java.sun.com/j2se to determine if it is still supported. If so, please try installing at a later time, as these files might be only temporary unavailable"
This problem seems to occur on XP-Home(sp2). When error message pops up, keep trying it, it 's eventually OK. It may confuse consumers at the first two times.

I have tried the downloading five times to no avail, both by double clicking, and using the windows run utility. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

I am getting the same error when opening the J2se Development Kit 5.0 Update 8 after I press the Run button. ( "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and than you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package").
    Is there a solution ?

  • Oracle 8.1.7 Release 3 on Windows XP Home Edition

    Hi,
I'm trying to install the personal oracle 8.1.7 in a laptop which is an windows xp home edition. The installer doesn't start!
    Is it a compatibility problem?
What should i do now to install oracle?

    Tom,
    Thanks for replying.
I don't see what I can compile. The initial program I am trying to compile is very simple it has a connect statement followed by the definition of a cursor, the cursor is opened and the fetch is performed. The program crashes on performing the open of the cursor. It seems to me that Pro*C is producing C output that the comipilers, (cl.exe in the visual studio .Net IDE, or mingw gcc for win32), cannot turn into runnable code on the Windows XP Professional platform. Pro*C is not open source code so I cannot recompile that, Microsoft cl.exe is most definately not open source. gcc is open source and I suppose I could recompile that but surely the mingw win32 compiler should work as it is standard and widely used. Anyway the output of both the compilers fails. Maybe I will compile gcc for my installation but it seems to me like Pro*C is probably the culprit here and trying to run the Oracle 8.1.7 version on XP may not be possible. I posted here in case this is a known problem.
Another thought has just occured to me that maybe I should try running a 10g or 9i version of Pro*C on the 8.1.7 installation. How would I get this? Would I have to install the whole installations to get the binary?

  • MANY issues after installing Windows XP Home Edition with Boot Camp

I have been having a lot of problems after installing Windows XP Home Edition (2002).
For one, after installing Windows using Boot Camp with Mac OS X 10.5.1, I opened Windows on my Mac Book, inserted the Mac OS X Disk 1 as in the instructions and got the message: "This package requires a newer version of the Windows installer. Do you want to update the version of the Windows Installer on your system?" When I clicked Yes (I had NO idea what it meant at the time), I got the message: "The required resource 'UPDATE' is missing" and the Installer quit.
How do I fix this problem?
Another problem I have is that there is no sound on the Windows XP, yet it works perfectly on Mac OS X. Is there any way to fix this problem?
A third problem I have is that I can't wirelessly connect to the internet using Window XP, yet I can on Mac OS X. I have no idea on how to fix this, and it's really messing with me. D:<
D: Some of these problems may not be specifically "Application" related, but the top one mainly is. (in my views)
    ~Twilight

    Twilight:
Is it possible that you installed Windows XPSP1 instead of the required SP2? If yes then that is cause of all of your issues listed in your post. You have no sound and you cannot connect wirelessly because you still have been unable to install the boot camp drivers when you inserted the leopard disk.
Please double check to see which version of windows XP did you install. Remember, you need windows XPSP2 for all this to work.
Now, in the event that you installed XPSP1 then you will need to get to the microsoft windows site on a different computer and burn the Service Pack 2 for windows XP on a CD. After that boot your apple mac to XP side and insert the Service Pack 2 disk and install the pack. After that, it will ask you to restart the computer which you must and then once fully booted into XP then insert the leopard CD again and see if takes and installs all the necessary drivers.

  • 10.4.11, VMware Fusion and Windows XP (Home Edition) works just fine

OK, so I'm through the installation of VMware Fusion and Windows XP (Home Edition) and I have to say that it was pretty much point and click as advertised. All network services seem to be working and I'm running both OS side-by-side with out a hitch.
Haven't put the system through any rigorous test yet, like VPN, network printing or rending large graphic files, but the installation, setup and normal operation went smoothly taking about an hour in total.
Machine: MacBook Pro, 1.8Ghz with 1G of RAM memory and dual monitors.
    Host OS: MacOS 10.4.11

I now have installed XP Pro into a Boot Camp Partition. Basically point and shoot. Then while booted in XP I used PC Mover to migrate my old PC to the Boot Camp partition. With the exception of one program and my virus and firewall programs all went well, almost point and shoot. Then I installed VMWares Fusion and used my Boot Camp partition as the source. If you follow instructions from VMWare things work relatively problem free.
After posting questions on VMwares site about processing video and compiling DVDs in Windows using Fusion I decided that such processor intensive requirements are best handled in the Boot Camp (native) mode.
The biggest problem I have encountered is that Microsoft Office constantly asks to be reactivated when switching between Boot Camp startup and Fusion. No solution I know of, except not to use Office in Boot Camp Mode. Secondly XP Pro required a re-authorization from Microsoft so I could run it in both Boot Camp and Fusion modes. Obtaining the authorization (activation code) from Microsoft was not a problem.

Yes, this did solve the problem.  But I had some trouble updating QuickTime.  It failed, with the installer complaining that it did not have the required permissions to install the files it needed in the program directory.  I got it to work by telling it to install the files to another directory.  All seems well now - Thanks!

I would like to know does above link missing both Windows 7 and Vista home edition, or ColdFusion 10 does not support Windows 7 and Vista home edtion.

You are right. Good find! The ColdFusion 10 Support Matrix confirms it. I am surprised to see that Windows Vista Home and Windows 7 Home are missing from the list.
Nevertheless, I do believe that ColdFusion 10 Standard will work on the the Home Edition of Windows 7 without any problems. After all, it works on Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate, and the differences between the 3 editions are irrelavant to ColdFusion installation.

  • Cannot install windows xp home edition w/sp3 into my mac pro mac os 10.6.2

cannot install windows xp home edition w/sp3 into my mac pro mac os 10.6.2. I followed the instructions step by step but it does let me install if fully when asks me to fully install it says it cannot where to install.

    Hi,
how much diskspace did you assign to the Windows partition ?
And did you do the reformating of the WIndows partition as described on pages 8-10 of the BootCamp Installation Guide ?
In your first post you mentioned 'fully install' twice. Any chance that the XP disc you use is an Upgrade disc and not a full retail/OEM one ?
Check with the label on the disc because such XP upgrade disc are not useable with BootCamp.
