J2ee,servlets,jsp

Hi guys
There has been a question thats bugging me for qute some time. I noticed many bank sites, or big companies use JSP/SERVLETS for their websites. Is there a particular reason why jsp/servlets are preferred over asp/php/coldfusion? I even realise a site (dbs.com.sg)using applet textfield as their forms ... isit supposed to be more secure this way? Can someone clear my doubts? thanks

The preference over ASP is clear: ASP runs on IIS which has security, performance and reliability problems (there's a Gartner advisory out, telling enterprises to move from IIS implementations till Microsoft rewrites IIS and giving a %85 probability that MS will begin to do so before the year ends). The performance penalty for ASP is that it is interpreted each time it is invoked. ASP.NET takes the JSP approach and will be compiled when it is deployed.
Preference over PHP and Coldfusion comes naturally if there is a Java business tier or the back-end is an IBM box (most of the time, it is) and Java is the easiest way to talk to it.

  • It looks Oracle Form/Applet  die hard versus J2EE Servlet/JSP/JSF  & AJAX

I left the form forum for a while and am busy with transfering our Oracle web forms app to Struts based J2EE application (just because the Oracle EE AS is the moving cause, it's out of my control.). After a year or so on J2EE which I enjoyed the fresh OO coding while keep enhancing Oracle webform app in production, I have some thought on Applet vs J2EE JSP/JSF plus AJAX.
    1) JSP itself is hard to avoid the full screen refreshing even though user just does partial changes ,e.g., lists, on the screen, it has to use AJAX to do the tricks. While partial refreshing in applet is natural default behavior.
    2) Forms is really an RAD, while J2EE's IDEs does help a bit(IBM's Websphere v6 even called iRAD) which takes way longer programming time compared to Forms. One IBM's article says it trys to win the Oracle Forms developers by giving the familiar graphical way of drag/drop GUI, so IBM recognizes the RAD coding power of Oracle Forms. So, IBM promotes the RAD similar to Oracle Forms.
    3) GUI/business rules related validation: Applet offered a great advantage over JSP/ even JSF which to avoid the full screen refresh, AJAX/JavaScript is used heavily. User friendly interaction of applet is way better than J2EE.
    4) Browser's back/refresh buttons also are headache to J2EE, expecially we need to support IE and Firefox. Applet basically is not bothered by these buttons.
Recently, I read techi news said that the new chips will make the network transfer speed 10 time faster than now-even the cell phone transfer the image will be way faster. Then I predict the applet, just like IBM's mainframe, will see its Spring again, not like now in its winter. Especially the Oracle Forms makes coding easier than pure applet coding.
Oracle folks, kepp beefing up the Oracle Forms, don't just pay attention to JDev. J2EE IDE, most of all, remove the Oracle EE ASxx block, be open. Oracle EE ASxx is really not a pretty baby, even though so Oracle thinks it is.

    1) Why we are transfering your Oracle web forms app to Struts based J2EE application?
Since our corporate is IBM world-DB2/UDB, WebSphere AS (WAS) etc. It only allows Oracle Forms/reports servers to be compatible with the infrastructure. It does not allow to purchase another EE app server(espeically LDAP). We could not upgrade our forms/reports6i to 9i or 10g.
2.Therefore the Oracle EE AS is the moving cause, it's out of my control because I did my best to talk to Oracle sales, but no avail. I am glad that I got a good chance to beef up my J2EE Struts skills.
If extract out the forms/report9i/10g engines from the Oracle EE AS 9i/10g, (don't attempt to bundle sell the EE AS to customers-regardless of the shrinked 9.0.4 forms/reports services version, it's still another EE AS) and make them compatible with other ASs(espcially the LDAP), then Oracle Forms will have more customers.

  • How to solve javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: duplicate Id for a component?

    Dear everyone,
I have built some customized JSF components. In the taglib, there is attribute "id" for my components. There is no problem when the page is run, but when I click submit button, there are errors.

Please kindly help solve this problem. Thank you.
    Best Regards,
    David

    Alex,
my guess is that because you copied content from the
first page to the next, you created JSF components
with the same ID. JSF components must have unique IDs
    though.
    FrankHello Frank,
Thanks for your reply. The thing is in the first page I do not have much id's specified/defined. And in the second page what I did was to take out all id's to see if it was conflicting. When I tried it again I still got the error. So the id's are being generated automatically if seems.
Also is it that JSF components should have unique id's for a particular page or all pages in the JSF application?
Any other sugguestions. I hope you understand what I am saying. If you have any questions or uncertainties fell free to ask me.
    Thanks,
    Alex.

  • ADF Security: javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext

    Hi,
In my ADF Application, new users are to be allowed to Register by clicking a button in login page. The Application is based on ADF Security Wizard and I have created default pages for Login and Error, so the application's login page is login.html.
Now when I’m trying to navigate to 'NewUserRegistrationPage.jspx' Im getting javax.servlet.jsp.JspException: Cannot find FacesContext error.
I thought the issue might be from calling a .jspx from .html so I created a 'NewLogin.jspx' Page with below code and specified this page in ADF Security Wizard for Login Page.
Please advice me some way of calling the 'newRegistrationpage.jspx' from my login page.
    Im using JDeveloper 10.1.3.4.

    Hi Branislav,
Thanks a lot for your suggestion through which now Im able to navigate to NewRegistration page from login.html.
In my application login.html is under public_html folder where as the NewRegistration page in public_html/WebPages.
    Code I used:
    New User Registration
But the issue now is, the NewUserRegistrationPage was also under the ADFSecurity, so inorder to navigate to it again the user had to provide authentication. So, I have removed this particular page from Security and it has started to work.
But the issue now I face is something else. In the NewUserRegistrationPage I have a selection to be made by user about the type of user he is and based on the selection he would be navigated to next page, This next page has a VO on it as a 'create form', through which he can directly fill the form and submit his details to database table.
But as I have removed these pages from ADF Security and authentication, the form fields/attributes in the VO are not getting binded, Im getting this Exception:
    500 Internal Server Error
javax.faces.el.PropertyNotFoundException: Error testing property 'inputValue' in bean of type null
For testing purpose when I have provided link from application page to NewRegistrationPage the flow is working properly, able to navigate to second page and submit the filled form to database, I think this is working because we have entered the application after providing the login credentials.'
    Help in this greatly needed.
    Thanks,
    Manasa.

  • Import javax.servlet.jsp.*;

I am new to JSP.I getting errors in compilation. Can anyone please tell me the following import file can be found in which development kit.
    "import javax.servlet.jsp.*;

You can download J2EE from sun's website. What you need is servlet.jar package. Put it in your CLASSPATH.

  • Package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist.

    dear all!
I've one program which import javax.servlet.jsp.* as one of the package to be used in
the program, and I am using j2sdk 1.4.0_01 to compiled it.
However I got this error message : package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist.
    Where does it wrong?.
    error message like :
logisticslib.java:6: package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist
    import javax.servlet.jsp.*;

    logisticslib.java:201: cannot resolve symbol
    symbol : class JspWriter
    location: class elogistic.db.logisticslib

You need a J2EE implementation, I recomemend Tomcat, you also need to put the .jar w/ the implementation in in your classpath.

My guess would be that you have some of the servlet classes deployed with your application.
    Yes.
Any jar files that contain the javax.servlet.* packages should NOT be part of a web application, but are intended to be on the server.
First up all there is no such jar files.
    Common candidates:
    servlet.jar
    servlet-api.jar
    j2ee.jar
All those jars are in lib directory of my app server. I have jsp-api and servlet-api.jar as i am using embedded tomcat 6 in jboss appsever.
Check the WEB-INF/lib directory of your web application to see that there are none of those there.
Nothing similar deployed in your ear file?I have extracted my application ear , jar and war then when i checked i found one jar file inside the war but in that no servlet*.jarr files. It is my application oriented files only. I have deleted this ar files and then i executedi am getting same error. Is there any way to find out the exact issue ????.

    Hi,
I'm having difficulty compiling a simple java class. The eror message is on an import javax.servlet.jsp statement. The specific error message is:
package javax.servlet.jsp.tagext does not existThis is just a simple tutorial class from a J2EE book. I am confused if the servlet-api.jar file is what it needs and it isn't finding it, or if I need another file, perhaps the servlet.jar? (What is the difference between the two?)

  • Servlets , JSP, JSTL ,etc

    Hello
In my Web project , I have used servlets, JSP , JSTL and JDBC to develop a Website, and now I am preparing a report about it.
Please forgive me if this question sounds "not very smart" , but kindly help. Is it correct to mention in my report I have used J2EE techologies and then briefly explain about JSP, Servlets, etc?
    Thank you
    Vajra

Well this really depends on what purpose your report serves and what the person/organization you're submitting your report to requires.
What have you been told to do? Do you have any template that you need to follow?
If you don't have any, then I guess you could add a section on the technology used and add a brief description covering this.
But really, this totally depends on your situation and requirements. No one can tell you what to do. And you wouldn't blindly follow advice given by anonymous strangers on an Internet forum for an important project report now would you? :D

  • Why all classes in javax.servlet.jsp are abstract?

    Hi all,
I have two questions about how the package was designed:
1.) why all the classes in the javax.servlet.jsp are abstract? what is the benefits?
2.) why almost all the methods in the class, such as jspWriter, are abstract too? And we can use these abstract methods in the way we use "concrete" methods?
3.) the same thing for HTTPServlet class at javax.servlet package.
    Thanks in advance
    yllx

Thanks for the message. In fact, you don't need to reply to the message if you don't have the answer.
I suspect that this has something to do with the abstract factor design pattern. It allows each container engine to implement the detail based on its own specification. I just need some body to put more details on that.
Since this happens quite often if the J2EE library, it's good for us to understand why they do this way, and how we can use it in our design.

  • Software Components Needed to Start Servlet/JSP development

    Hi
Can you list what are the software components required to develop Servlets and JSP pages.

To practice with servlets and JSP pages you'll need:
    - A server where you'll deploy your servlets and JSPs.
    Download Tomcat: http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/index.html
    - Tutorials for Servlets & JSPs: http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/tutorial/doc/index.html
    - Servlet API to compile your servlets. If using Tomcat look for the servlet.jar
in the installation directory under common/lib. You'll have to include this in your classpath.
