J2ee tutorial 1.3 lesson 2
I have been scratching around for this answer. I hope i'm in the right forum for this problem.
Let me say from the top that lesson 1 went off without a problem.
My error occured when I attempted to compile the modified BonusCalculationServlet. The compiler came back and tells me that bonus.calculation doesn't exist. Yet it compiles the files in that directory but not BonusCalculationServlet.
I've checked: Spelling, the positioning of the files, the path, import statements(I cut and pasted the example) and enviromenal variables.
So, anyone? Why wouldn't the servlet compile or rather why doesn't the compiler recognize the import statements.
Your asistance is greatly appreciated
With strong inference, I believe you are running into a situation like this:
[cjm@didi ~]$ javac TimerDemoClient.java
TimerDemoClient.java:10: package javax.ejb does not exist
import javax.ejb.*;
^...and likely you have more compiler messages after this because you later refer to classes contained within a package that is not in your CLASSPATH.
The explicit solution to the problem above is to append to my existing environment variable "CLASSPATH" the location of j2ee.jar (which contains the package javax.ejb.*)
To do it the old fashioned way:
bash-shell> export CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:/usr/local/SUNWappserver/lib/j2ee.jar
bash-shell> javac TimerDemoClient.java
If you were to edit your .bashrc, then you would need to start a new xterm before you would get the changes to your environment.
In Windows you would go to
Control Panel | System | Advanced | Environment Variables
Find or Add CLASSPATH, Click OK/Save and then, importantly, start a New DOS shell to compile from (your existing one will not pickup this change)

This appears to be a simple permissions problem, but I can not figure out where to configure these permissions. Can anyone help me?
TIA,
ChadEasy solution that I overlooked:
When setting the ResourceRefs for the BonusCalculationServlet, a user name and password must be specified. The generic username and password can be found in the auth.properties file in <install location>\config\auth.properties. In my specific case, they were the generic values from the j2ee install, guest/guest123.

J2EE Tutorial: Exception when building with ant
I am trying to build the converter example on page 48 of the J2EE tutorial using ant. Ant seems to choke on the following line from the build.xml:

My best guess is that the "myenv" line in the build.xml requires some additional attribute. I'm using ant version 1.3. My OS is Solaris (noted for possible environment-related issues).
Thanks in advance!
Eric SmithOn Windows XP Pro, the line
<property environment="myenv" />
in the init target of build.xml for the j2ee tutorial examples triggers a windows error message:
16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
=======================
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntvdm.exe
Error while setting up environment for the application. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
<<Close>> <<Ignore>>
So it looks as if ant is trying and failing to access the winnt system environment here.
According to Ant Developers Handbook (Sams, October 2002, chapter 4, p. 151), the ant environment property "specifies a prefix, giving access to OS-specific environment variables. This is not supported on all platforms." Until this problem is fixed, it appears that on XP systems anyway, any ant settings in build.xml files that rely on direct access to the system environment will fail. Here is some debug output from the j2ee tutorial examples init target which demonstrates this:
C:\apps\j2sdkee1.3.1\j2eetutorial\examples>ant init
Buildfile: build.xml
init:
[echo] starting init target
[echo] reached marker 1
[echo] reached marker 2
[echo] value of J2EE_HOME is ${myenv.J2EE_HOME}
[echo] finished init target
BUILD SUCCESSFUL
where the task:
<property environment="myenv" />
(which generates the OS error popup noted above) occurs between marker 1 and marker 2. Clearly the value of J2EE_HOME is NOT being successfully read from the system environment here. -

Anyone else seen this? It works ok with Hypersonic (though i can't get the
tutorial app to run with hypersonic - see my earlier post).
Alex.Some bugs in RCs sometimes don't make it into Bugzilla as it is a
release candidate and not production quality.
I would reocmmend upgrading as it fixes a number of major bug fixes and
you should be able to use the same eval key.

I should also have asked: what JDBC driver are you using?Hi Abe,
I haven't tried with RC2 - has this been fixed in RC2? I didn't find this

I'm using Sybase JConnect JDBC driver (com.sybase.jdbc2.jdbc.SybDriver in
jconn2.jar) - looks like this is the version:
jConnect (TM) for JDBC(TM)/5.5(Build 25008)/P/JDK12/Tue May 29 14:37:46

Should I upgrade from RC1 to RC2, and if so, can I continue to use the
same eval license key or can i download a new one?

I have not done the tutorial.. so bare with me..
the errors your seeing can mean many things.. but above all else it means that you've got a problem either connecting or communicating to the rmi_server you created or the rmiRegistry
My suggestion is this...
First try a simpler application.
How about a simple server that returns a string
and sets a string.
then a client app that can read the server string and envoke a change to it...
This will show the basics involved.
let me know your toughts..

Error when compiling the J2ee tutorial source files on win2k professional
Hi,
Could you help me?
I'm trying to complete the j2ee tutorial.
I have downloaded the example code, J2EE Sdk, J2SE and Ant from the web site (these files name are: j2ee-1_3-doc-tutorial-draft3.zip, j2sdkee-1_3_01-win.exe, j2sdk-1_3_1_01-win.exe, jakarta-ant-1.3-bin.zip) and installed the j2sdkee-1_3_01-win.exe, j2sdk-1_3_1_01-win.exe and unzipped j2ee-1_3-doc-tutorial-draft3.zip, jakarta-ant-1.3-bin.zip to their default subdirectory.( jdk1.3.1_01,
j2sdkee1.3,jakarta-ant-1.3)
According to instructions, I have set the Environment Variables as the below:

After finishing the above actions, I have started the j2ee server and deploytools successfully. But when I executed the following command( ANT CONVERTER ) under the appointed subdirectory, the error occurred.
The information is

Looking forward to the answer!

J2EE tutorial (June 17 '04) servlet example compilation error
This is a copy of my previous post on the same topic, but this one has a more self-desriptive subject line. Apologies for duplication.
I am trying the first servlet example in the J2EE tutorial, June 17, 2004, pgs 443 - 448. I have completed all the steps as described. However, the URL results in the following error. I would like to point out that I am using the URL http://localhost:8081/bookstore1/bookstore (instead of port 8080 because the admin console suggests that port 8081 is an available http port):
Assistance would be appreciated.
HTTP Status 404 - /bookstore1/bookstore
type Status report
message /bookstore1/bookstore
description The requested resource (/bookstore1/bookstore) is not available.

I looked at the logviewer and there are 3 severe errors in the log:

Context startup failed due to previous errorsI had the same problem. It was caused by not including \j2eetutorial14\examples\web\bookstore\dist\bookstore.jar in the bookstore1.war. You may need to build the bookstore.jar file first if you havent already.

Cant run J2EE tutorial DukesBank ...
Hello,
I am new in Java and J2EE and want just run the J2EE tutorial DukesBank which i have downloaded from java.sun.com.
Therefore are following steps done:
1. starting the J2EE server (j2ee -start)
2. starting the cloudscape database (cloudscape -start)
3. starting deploytool
4. compile the sources (ant compile-ejb)
5. package the ejbs (ant package-ejb)
Now when i use the verifier in the deploytool then i got the error message:
FAILED: method [makePayment] does not throw valid application exception in Remote/Local interface [com.sun.ebank.ejb.tx.TxController]
I think this causes also the error message which i got when i goto localhost/bank in the webbrowser:
Server Error
Your request cannot be completed. The server got the following error
null
So now i have modified the interface TxController.java with deleting the method 'makePayment', also in TxControllerBean.java.
Then i compiled they again (ant compile-ejb and ant package-ejb) but I have the same problem again, so has the tutorial an error or do i need to modify something else ?!?
Many thanks for every help

Plato23DukesBank - RemoteException in AppClient package
The two ant invocations "ant compile-ejb" and "ant package-ejb" take care of of the EJBs. The simplest to way to bring Bank up is "ant all" and there is no need of Deploytool though you will need J2EE Server up.
The context root of the Bank is simply "bank" and the BankAdmin can be run using "runclient.bat" (with a few vanity changes).
This is as far as I go for running the Bank. But when I tried to activate the various functions in the BankAdmin, I kept getting "RemoteException" and could neither create accounts nor customers.
Can anybody out there help? Thanks

The above code is excerpt from the tutorial sample files.
The problem is that these two classes are not in the same source file. They cannot be since there can be one and only one public class in a source file.
So how come ConverterHome can refer to Converter without import?

Hi I was creating a document in InDesign CS4 for a client. The InD document contained 4 links to Diagrams created using Illutrator CS4. I was saving all the files (IND + ILL) in one folder (Lets call it Folder 1). Later I had to make lots of change
