J2ME and 802.11b?

I'm planning to make wireless P2P between PDAs and PC using WiFi and J2ME.
Are there any issues between J2ME and WiFi that I should know about?
How difficult is it to make such a network?
Is J2ME compatible to most PDAs?
Can J2ME be used for an app on a PC?
I need all the help I can get. I am at your mercy. =)

Are there any issues between J2ME and WiFi that I
should know about?I'm guessing you will be using Sockets, Nokia phones, and sockets don't get on.
Is J2ME compatible to most PDAs?Sun have a PalmOS J2ME JRE, Symbian/Psion have a J2ME JRE and I've seen a MS Windows CE/PocketPC J2ME JRE about, Google knows all.
Can J2ME be used for an app on a PC?You would be better off writing a generic back end, then a J2ME LCDUI interface and a Swing/AWT/SWT interface, but I've seen the javax.mobileedition packages about for J2SE, or you could use a phone emulator.
I need all the help I can get. I am at your mercy.
=)I think one of the optional packages does P2P, I can't remember which thou.

  • WLSE and 802.11b/g Interference Detected

    Hello there!
I have 60 AP-1231G units over 8 sites running WDS in conjunction with a WLSE on 2.12FC firmware. A week ago, every AP on every site went into fault mode reporting "802.11b/g Interference Detected". Not matter what I try (rebooting APs, WLSE, clearing fault, upgrade to v2.13, so on) I can't get rid of this issue... Apparently every single AP over 8 sites (located in a radius of 60 miles) detected Interference all at the same time.... ???????
Has any one seen this before and know how to deal with this?
    Best Regards,
    Richard

    Hi Richard,
maybe you are facing a problem with CSCsd63242:
    Symptom:
If the 'Fault Severity' of the "Interference Detection" settings under Network Wide IDS settings, is modified, and later if APs are moved from the 'Default IDS profile' to any other newly created IDS profile, the interference faults that are raised
on those APs, are not raised with the correct severity that the user modified. For example, if one enables this setting and changes the fault severity to P3, and if some APs are moved from the 'Default IDS profile' to a new IDS profile, when the faul
ts are raised on these APs, the severity wouldn't be P3, but would be P1- the original severity of the fault.
Whereas, had the APs not been moved from the 'Default IDS profile' to any other profile, the faults raised would have been with correct severity - P3.
    Conditions:
This will happen in all pre 2.13.1 releases of WLSE, and only when the APs are moved to IDS profiles which are created new, or (are moved) to copies of IDS profiles which are created new. This will not happen when all the APs either belong to
the 'Default IDS profile' or are moved to copies of the 'Default IDS profile'.
    Workaround:
Modify the fault severity first. Then copy the the 'Default IDS Profile' to new ones and modify them in whatever way. Now, even if APs are assigned to these profiles, the correct severity will be used when the fault will be raised. Now, once the co
pies are created, don't modify the severity ever again! If you do, the new severity will be used only for the faults raised on APs belonging to the 'Default IDS profile', but the old severity will be used for the faults raised on APs belonging to the
    copied IDS profiles.
Also, don't create new IDS profiles and assign devices to them, always create copies from the 'Default IDS profile'.
    Further Problem Description:
The 'Network wide IDS settings' are supposed to be independent of any IDS profile. But, they are not behaving in this way. For more details, see workaround section above.
The problem is resolved in release 2.13.1 and wouldn't occurr even if the APs are assigned to newly created profiles (they don't have to be copies of the 'Default IDS Profile'). The upgrade scenarion is also taken care of - If this problem was faced
in releases prev to 2.13.1, when WLSE is upgraded from rel 2.13 to 2.13.1, this defect wouldn't occurr again.
    Hope that helps.
    Best regards,
    Frank

  • Broadcasting in 802.11n (a compatible) AND 802.11b/g

I have a Time Capsule and an Airport Express and I'm wondering if I could do the following (but not sure if/how)...
    1. Broadcast my cable broadband connection in 802.11n (a compatible) from the Time Capsule.
    2. Extend the network using my Airport Express but in 802.11b/g.
I want to do this because my xBox works far better on n/a, but of course my iPhone doesn't work at all unless it's on b/g (which is quite annoying).
Is this possible? And if so, is there any issue about the respective devices differentiate between the n/a and b/g?s

This is the exact command that you need to use.
The throughput with the aggregation is a bit higher than that without aggregation.

  • J2ME and 802.11

    Hi everybody,
I'm also suffering from the same disease of not knowing the answer to the
    following questions :-
    1. In a 802.11a/b/g enabled mobile phone if I use StreamSocket then How
can I make sure that my data is transferred over wi-fi or through other data
bearer service like GPRS, HSCSD etc.
    2. Does these wi-fi enabled mobile phones mount 802.11a/b/g modem as a
serial communication device so that we can communicate it using CommConnection?
    3. How can I build applications that will work in local lan with J2ME on a 802.11a/b/g
    enabled mobile phone?

    I have a similar problem,
how to write a MIDlet that communicates via 802.11x without using IP protocol (actually I want to implement an handshake to gain IP access).
Do I have to look to a particular Optional Package (a JSRxxx) implemented in the JVM? Or is it supposed that a device capable of Wi-Fi connection (and Java Support to it), would resolve a Stream Socket Connection directing it via 802.11X?

  • How to extend new TC - 802.11n with AEBSn's  and 802.11b/g with AEBS's

Regrets if this has already been answered, but I cannot seem to find it.
Just purchase a new 1TB TC - have set it up OK and it seems to be running fine. I am trying to extend both networks, n and b/g, with different devices - newer AEBSn's and regular older AEBS's.
I can see from the instructions the AEBSn's are set up with "Extending the network", but how are the b/g AEBS's set up?
In my old pre-TC set up, I had dual band networks set up using an AEBSn, and the AEBS's were set up to extend the b/g network using WDS. I cannot figure out how to set them up with this new dual band Time Capsule.
And BTW, I laso have old b/g AEX's set up to stream music, and have set them up as "Join a wireless network" - I think this is correct.
    TIA.

I may need to be offline for awhile, so I will go ahead and post the "how to" for the 4 AEBS devices that will be configured to "extend a wireless network".
Each “n” AEBS will be setup exactly the same, except that you will probably want to give each AEBS a separate name and/or number to keep things straight.
Rather than using wireless to configure the devices, I find that it will usually help to temporarily connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS to help with the configuration with AirPort Utility. You can disconnect the ethernet cable when you have the AEBS configured and updated.
I suggest that you configure each device and then place it in a temporary position to test to make sure it is "extending" and working correctly. If you turn off the wireless on your computer and plug your computer into one of the ethernet ports on the AEBS and get an internet connection, then you know that it’s “extending” and working correctly.
Or, if you have wireless active on your computer, you can also hold down the "option" key on your computer and click on the AirPort icon at the top of the screen. You will see the AirPort ID of the device that the computer is connected to, which should be the AEBS you are testing if the computer is close to the device.
Configure all 4 “n” AEBS devices and test them, then you can locate them where they are needed. Try to use the hub and wheel model as much as possible for best results. Unfortunately, the "extend" setup may not work well if you have the Time Capsule at one end of the house rather than a reasonably central location.
    AirPort Utility > Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to name the device, etc
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name=The name of the Time Capsule network should appear as a choice to extend
Put a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact setting as the Time Capsule
Wireless Password = Exact setting as the Time Capsule
    Update to save changes
I think that you can probably get the 3 AirPort Express devices configured to “join” the Time Capsule wireless network, so that should take care of AirTunes streaming on those devices.
The older AirPort Base Stations and AirPort Extreme(s) will need to connect using ethernet if you want to use them since they cannot be configured to “extend” a wireless network like the “n” AEBS devices.

Also are you allowing all the data rates 1,2,5,11 etc ?
Also did you check your client, can it attach to other access points using B

  • Photosmart C7250 wireless 802.11b fails

My new C7250 works well with USB and wired ethernet, but fails miserably (prints slowly, if at all) on my wireless 802.11b network.  All other devices work well on my wireless network.  I've spent many hours with HP and exhausted their first line support.  They supposedly have opened a case but I have heard nothing in a week.  Meanwhile, I took a network trace using WireShark and it shows a large number of retransmissions.  (I'm expert with application/network performance profiling.)  All you have to do is browse to http://192.168.1.xxx/ to test transmission -- don't even need to install drivers or printers to see the errors.  This problem appears to be with wireless support on the C7250.
Has anyone experienced problems or success with 802.11b on this device?  How about 802.11g?  I would be willing to upgrade my wireless if I knew that it would resolve the problem.
What does it take to escalate a probem with HP for resolution?

All 2004 and newer wireless HP Inkjet printers are compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b networks (otherwise we couldn't get 802.11g Wi-Fi certification).  Besides testing for interoperability, we test for a minimum wireless throughput at the TCP layer.
I'd like to see the internal connectivity report that you can generate by pressing the <setup> and <#> buttons simultaneously.  Scan the report to a memory card, copy it to your PC and post the image here.
It will tell me information about your wireless network and other networks in the area.
I have a couple of other questions:
Does the slow printing go away after a power cycling the printer and then does it return later?
Does the slow printing go away after a power cycling the wireless-router and then does it return later?
Are you seeing retransmissions of TCP, 802.3 (ethernet) frames or 802.11 frames?  I wasn't sure at what layer you are sniffing the data at?
What make and model 802.11b wireless-router are you using?
Do you have encryption enabled?  Does disabling encryption change the speed of printing?
How many wireless PC's (Macs?) to you have on your network?  Do they all exhibit slow printing?
Have you changed the default fragmentation settings of your wireless-router?
At home, I routinely get 1.5 Mbytes/sec transfer rates between my 802.11g wireless-routers and my HP printers and about 700 Kbytes/sec in 802.11b mode.
One other thing you can try is to go to the printers internal web page, browse over to the Networking, Wireless, Advanced page and enable the configuration "In an infrastructure network use 802.11b behavior".

  • AX Test using PB G4,  MacBook and MBP - is it the AX or 802.11b?

I recently bought an Airport Express so I could stream iTunes to the main stereo. iTunes keeps cutting out. I'm using a NetGear MR314 802.11b - also tried a linksys 802.11b and same results.
At first I thought it might be the distance of the AX from the wifi router...so I now I have all 3 laptops and the AX within 5-7 feet of the wifi router and still iTunes cuts out.
    I'm completely baffled.
I confirmed AX has the latest FW v6.3. I tried turning interference robustness on and off.
There isn't much to change config wise on the AX or the Netgear.
I find it hard to believe that streaming iTunes over 802.11b is more than it can handle. No other traffic is occurring over the wireless during my test.
    Thoughts on additional testing?

    Additional testing...
From each laptop I'm pinging the router and www.google.com.
The G4 has a consistent response of 3-5ms (router) and 75-80ms (google) where the other two (MB and MBP) have responses all over the field. 4ms to 1000ms to router and 70-1800ms responses to google. So something is clearly different between the airport cards of the G4 and the MB/MBP and the way they interact with the Netgear.
So I would only assume the AX would have similar responses like the MB/MBP since it is probably the same type of airport technology and not the older type in the G4 (just speculation)
The above is not even streaming iTunes.
When I stream iTunes even the G4 response times go up - 90ms to the router (vs 3-5ms w/out iTunes streaming) and 138 ms to google (vs 75-80ms w/out iTunes streaming).
    So what conclusions to draw?
    1) Airport cards in the MB & MBP have an issue communicating with the Netgear yet the G4 doesn't
    So what about the AX?
If I'm directly connected (ethernet) to the Netgear my response times don't change and they are 1ms to the router and 67ms to google - so the Netgear itself isn't having issues...only the wifi between it and the laptops.

  • Airtunes and Airport 802.11b

I've seen lots about Airport Express and iTunes but.......can I use an older Airport 802.11b standard card in my iBook to beam iTunes across to an Airport Express base station ? Help

    Hi there,
We have 2 Power Mac G4s here with std Airport cards fitted (Extreme cards won't fit). We have an Airport Extreme base station hooked to the cable modem across the house which works great. We use an Airport Express hooked to the living room stereo preamp. and the music can be streamed from both computers perfectly.
I can't see why you would have a problem.
The only time there is a problem is when the microwave oven is used (Normal).

  • E900 - Poor 802.11b Performance and set up tool

I've been a long time NetGear user and networker but after my second NetGear wireless router gave up the ghost I decided that it was time for a change to another manufacturer. Cisco is the biggest game in town, and now that they own Linksys I thought maybe they were worth a try. The E900 got pretty good reviews here on Amazon and it was available for $40 at WalMart, so I thought "Why not?"
I used the CD to run the Setup program, which seemed to work OK on my MacBook. But it's not at all clear as to what settings are being configured, so I went into the web interface to see what was going on. The interface isn't as clear or well organized as the NetGear one, and help is displayed in a separate web page which makes it challenging to read about the settings while viewing the configuration interface. That can be worked around by opening two web browsers, but that's not the biggest problem.
The Setup program and the web interface don't interact well, and somehow the Setup program software got corrupted so that the Macbook hung and would no longer boot from the internal hard drive on which the Cisco tools were installed. It took removing the Cisco directory from the /System/Application Support director on the MacBook to restore booting. I won't be using the Cisco tools anymore. As an added bonus, using the web interface I can set a WPA passphrase that is separate and distinct from the router login password, something that doesn't seem possible using the Cisco tool.
Once over these hurdles, the problems continue. I use an old PowerBook G4 in a spare bedroom that has an internal 802.11b wireless interface, and while the signal to it is strong, it has problems using the channel. Some URLs work fine, but any secure (https) connections timeout without connecting. Some regular (http) connections, such as google.com, won't load, either. Installing an 802.11g card in the laptop don't improve matters at all. The wireless interface in the iPhone 4S seems to work just fine, so I'm guessing it's something to do with older technology in the G4 that Linksys has decided to no longer support. I wasted most of a morning trying to get this to work but was unsuccessful. And without reliable wireless performance, what's the point of having a wireless router? This one goes back to WalMart, and I'll keep shopping for something better.

Linksys/Cisco E900 router has been launched recently. The Cisco Connect software is a step-by-step setup wizard that will have your computer connected wirelessly in minutes.  Cisco Connect offers powerful tools for managing your wireless network such as Security Settings, Guest Access, Parental Controls and Advanced Settings.  Installation of the Cisco Connect software is through the Setup CD included with every Linksys Wireless-N E- series router. Once installed, software and firmware updates would be a breeze with its automatic upgrade detect feature. The Graphical User Interface (GUI) is bit different from other router’s Interface.
But yes, if the Cisco Connect software gets corrupted from the computer then in that case to reinstall the Cisco Connect you need to uninstall the existing one.  You have an added advantage of using WPA2/WPA mixed-mode which supports two encryption methods at the same time: WPA2-Personal with AES encryption and WPA-Personal with TKIP encryption, with a shared dynamic encryption key.
If you are facing problems with some of your websites which does not loads up. Then this issue could be caused by any of the below possibilities.

Issue with DNS servers or ISP.

  • X1 and 802.11n

    Hi,
Im having real issues with 802.11n and my new x1 carbon.
After configuring the '802.11n mode' option to enable I sometimes hit speeds over 54mbs but mostly it settles around 19-36..
This occurs at home and at my workplace (Technicolor gateway router and cisco enterpirse 802.11n network respectively).
What gives. I have updated the wifi controller to latest drivers.

When the iPhone joins the 802.11n (b/g compatible network) in the 2.4GHz band, the network will drop down the speed a little to deal with the slower device (this is done automatically, you don't have to manually change it).
Alternatively, you can manually switch between 5GHz 802.11n and 2.4GHz b/g mode every time your iphone need to connect to the internet. But it's a lot of inconvenience.
The best way is to run all 802.11n devices in 5 GHz band, and your iPhone in a separate 802.11b/g 2.4 GHz band network. But this requires two base stations.
From your earlier post, I don't think you have two base stations needed to set up a dual-band network, and you will need to purchase additional new base station to set this up.

  • Adding 802.11b/g AX(s) to multi-Airport Extreme 802.11n roaming network

First, a thanks to folks like Tesserax and Bob for the great ideas on this forum -- the questions & answers I've read have helped me to date, though I still have a question!
My home wireless network today consists of:
One fifth-generation AEBS running in 802.11n only (5 GHz) / 802.11n only (2.4 GHz) mode, on channels 149 (automatic)/11 (automatic) -- provides DHCP services
One second-generation AEBS running in 802.11n only (5 GHz) mode, on channel 157 (automatic) -- bridge mode
There is a wired home network with Cat5e and a gigabit switch in the basement.  30 down/5 up DOCSIS 3.0 service through Time Warner Cable, upstream from the fifth-gen AEBS.  The AEBS units are connected in roaming mode via Ethernet.
Using the Airport Utility on my iOS devices, I'm getting "excellent" (59-65 Mb/s) connectivity when I am near either of the AEBS units.  It is a large brick house built in the 1920s, and while there are now no dead zones in the house, there are areas where I drop down to 10-15 Mb/s per the Airport Utility.  Unfortunately, the two AEBSs are at opposite ends of the house near external walls, one on first floor and one on second -- and the first floor rear AEBS needs to be where it is to serve a breakfast room and sunroom, while the home office AEBS needs to be where I have two Ethernet drops as the cable modem and switch are in the basement.
Before I added the fifth-gen AEBS, I had the older AEBS and two 802.11b/g Airport Express (AX) devices, also in roaming mode.  I wasn't thrilled with performance, and while performance is much better with the two AEBS model, I'm wondering about the benefits of redeploying my AX devices elsewhere in the house on the roaming network -- on the theory that I should be getting better 802.11g performance from a device close enough to get max speeds than I am from a farther-away 802.11n AEBS.
However, I am concerned about whether adding back in 802.11b/g devices on 2.4 GHz would restrict the performance of my 802.11n network?  I am assuming that might happen because I have 802.11n running on both frequencies... if I stepped back on the fifth-gen AEBS to 802.11n only (5 GHz) / 802.11b/g  [or a similar setting] on that device, will that help?  Or, am I running the risk of other cross-talk or interference -- or simply of my home network devices being befuddled by multiple access points in a single house?
Alternatively, I could try to replace my 802.11b/g AX units with 802.11n ones -- howeever, having just bought a new AEBS this week, that would encounter cross-talk with my Spousal Budgetary Compliance Unit (SBCU) and I could end up crashing the entire household....
    Thoughts and ideas appreciated!

If you use the "b/g" AirPort Express devices in a roaming setup, any computers, iPads, etc in close proximity will connect at maximum "g" wireless speeds.
It's really not possible to predict the actual results in advance. The increased wireless coverage might tend to compensate for the lower speeds that would naturally occur due to signal drop off if you did not use the AirPort Express devices at all.
As long as the wireless access points are in a separate room, or separated by 25-30 feet or so from other access points, there should be no confusion that occurs with your laptop trying to connect. It will pick the strongest signal as it moves through the house.
I think the bottom line here is that this is one of those things where you just will not know unless you try. If the Ethernet cabling is already in place, it should not take long for you to find out how things are working.

    Thanks for any advice

In some of the big name brands of wireless, there is "no such thing" as 802.11n on a 2.4 Ghz.  No such thing because Cisco won't allow you (any more) to do channel bonding of 2.4 Ghz.  It doesn't make any sense to bond an already restricted 2.4 Ghz non-overlapping channel (three) and squeeze this number down to two.
Can you check to ensure that the data rates for 802.11b are enabled?  Maybe someone disabled data rates from 1 Mbps to 11 Mbps.

  • Time Capsule (SIM) expand network with 802.11b/g Airport Extreme

Hi, I try to expand a Airport-Network which is set up with a Time Capsule (SIM (latest model). I like to use an Airport-Extreme-Basestation to expand the network. The two devices will be connected wireless. In the helpfile there is a explantation how to do this with 802.11n-devices but when it comes to the 802.11b/g-devices it just says I should have a look on the apple support-pages. I do not find anything there.
I tried everything, but it did not work. I've had a Time Capsule (first model) which died some days ago (the well known powersupply problem). With this Time Capsule I did not had any problems to set up a WDS.
    What to do?

Ok Jolly, thank you, but I started this thread to get in contact to somebody who knows the solution, i.e. has done this before.

Of course I've already tried this and the other automatics, but it did not work. That is the reason I am asking for help. So I guess I need special settings.
    NOT good !
No protection is not good, ok. But I want it to set up and running and after this I can switch on protection to eleminate some mistake-reasons.
    WDS-Mode: "remote WDS-Basestation"
when the UFO joins the TC's network this will no longer apply
But this menu exists and the UFO does not join the network, so I have to select any of this settings!
try these steps provided by Tesserax:
Setting Up Time Capsule as a Second Wireless Router
802.11g AirPort Extreme Base Station -> 802.11n Time Capsule
With "mixed" AirPorts, you will need to configure both routers into a Wireless Distribution System (WDS). Your neighbor's AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) will be the main and your Time Capsule (TC) will be the remote base station in this WDS.
To simplify setup, you should connect your TC directly to the AirPort's LAN port by Ethernet. Once the WDS is configured, you can disconnect the TC and place it at the desired location.
The following are the basic configuration steps to create a WDS:
(Note: To facilitate the WDS set up, jot down the AirPort IDs (MAC addresses) for each of the base stations to be used in the WDS. The AirPort ID and is printed on the label on the bottom/side of the base station.)
Main Base Station Setup - AEBS
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as the main base station.
o Open AirPort Utility (located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the main base station, and choose Manual Setup from the Base
Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window.
o Enter the base station password if necessary. If the base station is using the
default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
o Click Wireless in the toolbar, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
o Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox if you want client computer to connect to this base station.
o Click the Add "+" button and enter the AirPort ID of the base station you want to connect to this base station.
o Click Update to send the new settings to the base stations in the WDS.
Remote Base Station Setup - TC
o Click the AirPort status menu in the menu bar and choose the wireless network created by the base station you want to set up as a remote base station.
o Open AirPort Utility (in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a Macintosh computer, or in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows).
o Select the remote base station, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Enter the base station password, if necessary. If the base station is using the default password of public, you will not be prompted for a password.
o Enter the same network password as the main base station, if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar and click Wireless. Choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and choose the same channel as the main base station from the Channel pop-up menu.
o Click WDS and choose “WDS remote” from the pop-up menu.
o Enter the AirPort ID of the main base station in the WDS Main field.
o Click Update to transfer the settings to the base station.
(ref: Pages 42-46 of "Designing AirPort Networks.)
802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station -> 802.11n Time Capsule
o Open AirPort Utility and select the base station that will connect to the Internet.
o Choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open the configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
o Choose “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then select the “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox.
o Next, select the base station that will extend this network, and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu, or double-click the base station to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the base station password if necessary.
o Choose “Extend a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu, and then choose the network you want to extend from the Network Name pop-up menu.
o Enter the base station network and base station password is necessary.
o Click Update to update the base station with new network settings.
does this fix it for you ?
