  • Will there be Mission Control for Java 7?

Will there be a release of Mission Control that works with Java 7? If so, when?
I understand from this page, http://blogs.oracle.com/henrik/entry/java_7_questions_answers , that there will be no JRockit for Java 7 since it is being merged with HotSpot but I see no indication when Mission Control will support the new merged JDK.

We're working on merging JRockit features into HotSpot, and supporting these with a new version of Mission Control.
Flight Recorder will come in a JDK 7 update.

  • JavaFX roadmap ... emerging platforms ... (iPhone/iPad, Android ...)

    Hi,
This url talks about the roadmap.
    http://javafx.com/roadmap/
It seems to be upto 2014.
Request the JavaFX Product Managers to develop and state their plans for the emerging platforms. (iPhone/iPad, Android, Blackberry OS ? )
    Cheers ...
    /rk

See http://fxexperience.com/2012/01/2012-javafx-resolutions/ for an unofficial top 10 goals for this year.
    Note resolution #5 (embedded):
"As announced at JavaOne 2011, the new embedded platforms coming from Oracle (CDC) will be using JavaFX as the UI technology. That is slated for final release in 2013 along with Java 8 and JavaFX 3. However, there is a lot of work that has to be done this year to make this a reality, including adding touch event support to the platform. Having working embedded prototypes for this year is high on the list of goals for JavaFX!"
I could be wrong here, but I believe the Android prototype shown at JavaOne was based on very early CDC prototype and the potential strategy for iOS support would include bundling an iOS port of the CDC with apps. My guess is that the JavaFX team is working on Android/iOS support (and additional ARM/Intel platforms) but is not at liberty to discuss this work and roadmap in detail at this stage (but that is just my guess - I don't know).
Also, as resolution #1 (open source) progresses, future plans will become naturally more transparent.
The goal is to complete the open source process this year.

  • J2ME MMS send/receive (WMADemo app) now fails on all UK mobile networks!

I built a J2ME CLDC mobile app that has run successfully in several countries for the past 4 years.
It is a messaging app based on the J2ME MMS send/receive functionality in the Wireless Messaging API (wma11.jar and wma20.jar), which allows message parts to be assembled into an MMS and sent between mobile devices and have the receiving device's push registry recognise the incoming MMS and launch the J2ME app to display the message content.
This functionality is demonstrated in the Sun Wireless Toolkit (WTK) demo app WMADemo, which always worked perfectly.
As of July 2011, my app stopped working on all UK mobile networks but continues to work successfully on mobile networks in other countries (including USA and India). The WMADemo app has also similarly ceased to work.
The problem is that the incoming MMS is no longer recognised by the mobile device's push registry and thus gets sent directly to the device's default MMS inbox and therefore does not launch the J2ME app.
I have spent months trying to track down the cause of the problem. It is impossible to get any answers from any of the UK mobile networks.
It seems clear that the UK mobile networks have made some change to the protocols on their MMS servers but I cannot find out if this is the case.
Testing has shown that this is not a MIME type issue. So it is likely a change in the security settings on the MMS servers. For obvious reasons, the actual content of the generated MMS messages is binary data for interpretation by the receiving app. So it is possible this binary data is now being blocked in some way by the UK networks.
This is a business critical application and I am getting nowhere with the UK networks (Orange is the only one that bothered to reply but is very slow in progressing and OfCom and the Ombudsman can do nothing to help).
Have any of you guys hit this problem? I desparately need to find out the cause and resolve this issue as soon as possible.
Thank you in advance for any advice, pointers or suggested solutions.

Yes, I agree - 10 seconds can be a bit short for a backlight, but it makes you read faster and act faster - and that is a skill you can use everywhere in live.
In my next Nokia I hope they take it down to 9 seconds :-)

  • J2ME SDK 3 and Siemens - preverification error: Native Methods

    Dear experts,
I am working on this issue for a week, but without success.
Maybe because I am trying to combine something new and old :-(
I tried to use Siemens TC45 GSM java module with j2ME Platform SDK 3.0.
It goes well and I have results until I use standard libraries like:
Import javax.microedition.io.*;But I also need Siemens library so I included:
Import com.siemens.icm.io.*;When building (preverifying stage) I got error:
“ERROR: native methods should not appear”
If I write similar midlet in SUN ONE Studio 4 ME (with j2me1.0.4) I can preverify it and build midlet without errors. So I assume that I have problems in SDK3.0 with version of preverifier or with some other settings somewhere. Can anyone please point me to the right direction?
    Thank you,
    Mitja

The issue is resolved. You have to update Java ME SDK 3.0.5 to obtain the fix:
    1. Ensure that you have downloaded and installed the latest Java ME SDK 3.0.5 (published on Dec 23, 2011). In the updated 3.0.5 release we have added the Japanese and simplified Chinese localizations and "Update Center" feature that is required to obtain the fix.
    2. Run Update Center either from Start menu or from Netbeans "Java ME" menu (in this case you should install Netbeans integration during Java ME SDK installation).
    3. Install "Java ME SDK Tools Netbeans Update Site" via Update Center.
    4. Restart Netbeans IDE.
    5. In Netbeans, go to Tools -> Plugins, Reload Catalog and install "Utilities" update from "Java ME SDK Tools" category.
    That's it.

The article mentions the iMac with Thunderbolt, and then it mentions the 27-inch iMac with Mini DisplayPort, which are the Late 2009 and Mid 2010 computers. As I told you, Mid 2011 and Late 2012 21'5-inch iMacs have Thunderbolt, so they support Thunderbolt. Have a look at this forum.

I was told that if I connected the two computers, that I would only be able to transfer data between them, and the displays would not be connected in any way.
You can connect a Thunderbolt Mac to the Thunderbolt iMac for both things, but you need to follow additional steps:
To enable Target Display mode: press Command and F2 keys on the iMac.
To enable Target Disk mode (transfer files between Macs without Migration Assistant): hold the T key while your iMac or the other computer is starting

  • MBP 15'' 2011 battery lasts only 3 hours!

    Hi
I bought MBP 2011 15 inch last week and received it on Monday.
    My configs are
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.2 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          4 GB
and I also upgraded to high resolution.
So far, I'm pretty much enjoying my new MBP
But I have one main concern with my new laptop's battery time.
The battry time is really really short!
When I first turned it on, it took 3 hours to drain the battery. (starting from 98% or so)
And I did calibration thing so that the battery runs more "efficiently"
Of course, I didn't expect that calibration would make the battery last longer, but no matter what,
I only get 3 hours of battery life and I'm not even doing something that would drain my battery fast.
I just do simple web surfing and word documenting on about 30-40% brightness (or even lower sometimes)
And I get only 3 hours of bettery time.
So is this because my MBP has four i7 cores or or what?
Previous MBP 15'' models seem to last at least around 5 hrs doing exactly same thing.
And considering that I have been using my MBP only for 5 days or so, I'm worried that the battery life will become even less!
    Maybe like 2 hrs?
Is this a particular issue with my laptop, that I can return and exchange to new model or get fixed without fees?
Or is it just built this way that all the MBP 2011 15'' models have this kind of short battery life?

OMG turning off the Bluetooth just gave me like extra 3 hours of battey time! (6 hrs total)
I didn't even know it was turned on in the first place because I never touched it.
I guess bluetooth is on as a default setting.
Thank you so much for advice.
I feel so stupid, but please be understanding since it's actually my first MacBook.
But I'm really glad to find out that I was wasting battery with bluetooth on, and now I can get better battery time.
    Thanks once again!

  • Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.

Mid 2011 Macbook Air Painfully slow.
Hey everyone.  I am writing about my 13 inch Mid 2011 Macbook Air.
Recently it has been extremely slow and on occasion has not started up.
I have reset the PRAM and SMC already, yet it is still very slow.  I have a couple theories about what might have caused it, are they plausible?
Theory 1:  It’s a software problem. I tried to upgrade to 10.8.2 but halfway through the upgrade the computer restarted and somehow I was still on 10.8.1.  For fear of a big issue happening I didn’t try to upgrade again. Perhaps it is a flaw in Apple’s software update?
The important thing to note about this update is that I tried to install 10.8.2 around a month or two weeks BEFORE I started having problems.  So if these issues were due to 10.8.2’s failed update then it certainly was a delayed reaction.
I would of course like to update to 10.8.2 BUT as my computer is acting EXTREMELY slow and having trouble turning on occasionally I am worried the software update will completely brick the machine.  Is that possible?  Should I actually finish through with the software update?
Theory 2:  It was an electricity problem.
The computer died when I was sitting at a café plugged into their wall sockets.  A few days later when I came back to the same spot with my old macbook which is now being used in lieu of the Air it suddenly turned black for a little while. Sensing it might be an electricity surge or something with their system I unplugged the cable.  I am not sure if that was paranoia though.
Can an electricity surge or a bad outlet fry a computer?  Can it fry the ram so the computer is extremely slow? Does that theory hold any water?
Thanks for your help diagnosing this problem.
    All the best.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Copy or drag — do not type — the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.) You can omit the final line ending in “$”.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • How can I connect my Early 2011" Macbook Pro 13" inch, with a generic Mini Display Port to HDMI connector, to a LG 32LD340 LCD TV, using Mountain Lion 10.8.2?

I have an Early 2011" macbook pro 13 inch (core i5 2.3ghz 4gb ram 320hdd) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and I want to connect it via Mini DP to HDMI connector, and a HDMI cable to a LCD TV LG 32LD340. When I had Lion OS, I had no problems at all.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed on MacBook Pro 8,2 (15 inch, Late 2011)

    Hi Everyone,
For the second time now, I have to bring my Macbook Pro 8,2 (macbookpro8,2, 15 inch, late 2011) running Mountain Lion back to the Genius Bar due to a unrecognized Wi-Fi Airport adapter. The computer was purchased in March of 2012.
The problem started as I was watching 'The Daily Show" online, when suddenly, I lost connection. I clicked on the wi-fi adapter icon on the top menu bar, and saw that no access points were available when there normally were over 20, including mine in the house. I went into the network settings under system preferences and saw that the wi-fi card was off (although it was just on and still showed the full-signal indicator in the menu bar), and attempted to click the button to turn it back on with no response. All other options were either greyed-out or displayed no information. The Hardware tab didn't even display and the mac address suddenly became all zeros.
I rebooted the computer, only to discover the wi-fi indicator on the menu bar displaying no signal. Upon clicking on the icon, the dreaded "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" was displayed. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM with no success. I also rand the Hardware Troubleshooter ( Option - D upon bootup ) which neither saw the communications device nor reported finding any problem.
I brought it to the Genius Bar, and they ended up replacing BOTH the Logic Board, Wi-Fi adapter, and connection cable between the wi-fi adapter and logic board on July 23, 2012.
Now, it's October 10, 2012, and last night, as I was working through a VPN tunnel on the terminal on one of our remote servers, the SAME THING happened AGAIN! The connection was dropped, same scenario as above, and upon bootup I was greeted with the  "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" message again.
The hardware magically disappeard with no mention of this in the Console, as far as I can tell. The Console mentions the loss of connection and inability to contact DNS, but nothing relating to hardware.
For the record, the bluetooth continued to function both times I've had this issue. The first time this happened, I was running Lion and now I'm running Mountain Lion.
So apparently there is something really wrong with either the physical enclosure causing a short somehow, the quality of the Broadcom chip on this wi-fi device, or there's some type of software/power causing the chip to short out.
My compouter is as protected as can be - it's in a Speck plastic housing with a keyboard cover, which was purchased after the first incident, I use it on a hard flat plastic laptop tablet at home, and carry it around in a Timbuk2 Laptop bag. It also has never been dropped.
What's the problem here? Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks and all the best of luck and success solving your own computer problems

Sorry for the late reply. I had a bad experience with the Apple Store and the 'Genius' Bar where I live. However, in the end, I received my MacBook Pro back from repair and everything is working.
Like I said in my previous post, the first time the Wi-Fi broke, I was using Lion. The mother (Logic) board was replaced as well as the Wi-Fi card.
The second time it broke, I was using Mountain Lion. Booting up the Recovery partition and Snow Leopard (new install) did not solve the issue. The Apple Store confirmed that the Wi-Fi card was broken through various testing, which I observed.
Since the attenna wires for the Wi-Fi run through the display, we decided the next logical step was to replace the Wi-Fi card and the display. The reasoning is that there could have been a short or cross connection in the attenna wiring that was causing the Wi-Fi cards to short-out/burn-out. The Bluetooth continued to work in both cases the Wi-Fi failed, meaning that it was unlikely a cable problem.
Since the display and wi-fi have been replaced (20121025), I've had no problems. The wi-fi card is working.
I'm glad the kext file solution has worked for you. I've seen posts on this solution; however, after determining that this was indeed a hardware failure (by using Recovery console, booting from Snow Leopard, and using Hardware Troubleshooter (it didn't even see the Wi-Fi) ), I didn't bother with fiddling with the kext (driver) files. Besides, this hardware is supposed to be designed to work with the OS without any problems whatsoever. Shame on Apple if they don't ship proper drivers for their hardware!

  • 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011.takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get

    Hello All,
I have a 15" i7 Macbook Pro from early 2011. The past few weeks, it has been getting increasingly difficult to get on my computer. It takes the mac laptop two or three tries to boot successfully. It would turn on, show gray screen, shut down, turn on again, show gray screen, shutdown, and then turn on, show gray screen, before it can finally get to the dark gray log-in screen. Even when I finally get logged in to start working, thinking it would be okay now, it shuts down randomly.
I've ruled out the possibility of a software problem because I've just done a clean re-install of Mac OS X Mavericks on my computer just yesterday.
I did upgrade the RAM recently, about a month and a half ago, from 4GB to 16GB, I went to the apple store four days after that upgrade to have them do a hardware test, and clean the inside of my laptop, which helped with previous heat issues. When they did the hardware test, the hardware was all registered as fine from their system.
I've tried resetting the SMC, PRAM, and doing the internet recovery hardware test, but to no avail. I thought I could at least find out what parts needed to be replaced from the hardware test but it seems that when the hardware test is almost finished, the computer just shuts down, So I am unable to see the results.
My computer is also having battery issues, under battery condition, it says "replace now," parts have been ordered, waiting for arrival. But if the battery health is low, it should still boot up fine, it would just hold a significantly less charge.
Could this be a hard drive issue?
Has anyone had similar symptoms and how was it resolved?
Does anyone know what I can do to alleviate this issue?
I haven't had time to take it to Apple because I'm currently taking a 21 credit semester academically. I'm an art and design student so my computer is basically the bane of my existence. Help! Any constructive advice is welcomed!
Thank you so much for your input!
    -Christina C.

  • Lion takes 15 seconds to log in after reboot on Macbook Pro 13" (early 2011)

I have been having sluggish performance (repeated beachballs, etc.) on my Macbook Pro 13-inch (2.7 GHz Intel Core i7, 4 GB RAM), which I bought this summer pre-installed with Lion.
I didn't migrate my old system, I just installed everything on my new machine. After about 9 years of OS X upgrades on various machines, I decided to start fresh and just installed my applications and transferred the data manually. It took some time, but I wanted it lean and clean.
Within weeks though, things were starting to slow down. This morning, it took over 15 seconds after reboot before I could even log in to my user account (I clicked on the icon for my account, and after 4-5 seconds it beachballed for 10 seconds before the field for the password "slid" into place).
I've tried checking and unchecking having Lion restore my previous session before rebooting; closing all applications before restarting; not closing applications before restarting. But consistently, right after logging in for several minutes, and then after several hours of use (and/or the next day, if I put my laptop to sleep instead of shutting it down) opening, saving documents, viewing mailboxes after opening Mail, or even viewing folder contents in the Finder can take from several to 30+ seconds.
Here is the log from my most recent boot. I have Dropbox, LogMeIn, Default Folder, and Growl (the pre-App Store version), and I have Parallels (which I very rarely use), but I don't see why any of these would slow down my machine before I even log in. Besides this, I have pretty standard fair applications. I would very much appreciate any help/advice!

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.
