Hello everyone. I have the following error when I am unpacking j2sdk-1_4_2_03-linux-i586.bin ..I note you marked this question as 'answered' yet there is no indication of 'helpful' or 'correct' replies and no immediate indication of the solution (by my quick glance). In any case, thought it might be helpful to add that you do not really need a 1.4.2 JDK to compile code for 1.4.
All that is required to code for a particular version is the right compile time options* and an rt.jar (the J2SE core classes) for that version. The rt.jar can be obtained from any JRE of that version.

Installation of JRE-1_4_2-linux-i586.rpm: Linux RH9
I am kinda of a noob at this so this might be a really simple questions. I just recently installed jre 1.4.2, after following all the processes on the installion page it said this:
Preparing packages for installation...
j2re-1.4.2-fcs
[root@localhost backgrounds]#
The first question is do I need to take this further?
The reason for this question is I am installing LimeWireLinux and I got an error message like this:
[root@localhost backgrounds]# ./LimeWireLinux.bin
Preparing to install...
Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this system's environment...
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program.
[root@localhost backgrounds]#
So now it won't let me install LimeWire.
Thank you for your help.I decided to answer my reply, since who knows maybe someone else need the same thing. This is thanks to Kevin from the olive.
This is for the newbies...
Ok, download limewire from the link above, make sure you have a java vm installed (j2re ...goto http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/)
Log in as root.
Install J2, then find its path and version (try: ls /usr/java/j2*)
Before installing Limewire. vi (or however you create files) a file called java.sh :.Click on "more"
[root@localhost kevin]# vi /etc/profile.d/java.sh
enter the following:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2re...yourversion
export JAVA_HOME
PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
export PATH
So my java.sh file looks like this:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2re1.4.1_02
export JAVA_HOME
PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
export PATH
(note my ls /usr/java/j2* matches the first line in the above file)
Also change permisions to java.sh:
chmod +x /etc/profile.d/java.sh
Now log in as your user, and install Lime wire.
Once this new file is saved, you will need to type the above 4 lines you put in the java.sh file (again....do this as user, not root) into your command line or reboot. The reason is that this file is read during boot up, since you haven't done thatyet, your OS is not aware of java.sh . Here is the before and after so you see what I am getting at:
-----------------begin--------------------------
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ sh LimeWireLinux.bin
Preparing to install...
Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this system's environment...
No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH
environment variable. You must install a VM prior to
running this program.
[kevin@localhost kevin]$
[kevin@localhost kevin]$JAVA_HOME=/usr/java/j2re1.4.1_02
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ export JAVA_HOME
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ export PATH
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ sh LimeWireLinux.bin
Preparing to install...
Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive...
Configuring the installer for this system's environment...
Launching installer...
---------------------end-----------------------------------------
At this point a box pops up and the rest is point n click. Once installed you will notice in your home directory an new file called "runLimeWire"
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ ls runLimeWire
runLimeWire
So to run LimeWire type:
[kevin@localhost kevin]$ ./runLimeWire
...you will get a box pop up and your off and running......

Install fails j2re-1_4_2_01-windows-i586.exe
I'm also having this problem with j2sdk-1_4_2_01-windows-i586.exe. The install starts ok, but I ghen get "Failed to extract file Dll_.ini" from the binary table. the 1.3 runtime installs fine, but it looks like the installer changed with 1.4
I finally got this running, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. I took a look at: http://support.installshield.com/kb/view.asp?pcode=ALL&articleid=Q105416&source=support_central&product=wind
I wasn't willing to make all the security changes it suggested, but tried a couple of them which didn't work and I restored the original permissions. I noticed that most if not all gave permissions to local admins, but not domain admins. That gave me the idea of trying log on to the local machine. I did that and both the jre and jdk installed without a hitch. I can't explain why this worked as this machine and my office machine are virtually the same and I built most of both networks. I log on to both machines with my domain userid. The office machine worked the first time. I will be taking a look at the installshield article again to compare the settings on both machines.
Bottom line, try logging in on the local machine and installing.

Unpacking a rpm.bin file in SuSE Linux
At the LinuxWorld conference I got a "Forte for Java 4" cd which has j2se 1.4 SDK as well as Forte for java 4 in three editions and something called j2ee BluePrints. The Linux version of the SDK is in packed form and needs to be unpacked once it is copied from the cd to a folder on the machine. How do I unpack the file so I can install it using the rpm manager?
You're probably gonna feel a little silly, but here's the answer:
cd /mnt/cdrom/../j2sdkwhatever.rpm.bin .
chmod a+x j2sdk*.bin
./j2sdkwhatever.binI usually get the tar.gz file myself, so I can put it where I want it (usually /opt). -
How to install Linux .rpm.bin
Downloaded Linux Java release, j2sdk...rpm.bin. Can't find anything willing to process a bin file. Know how to use console rpm or Gnome RPM, but neither will touch a bin file. What to do? Thanks.
Discovered in other forum queries that bin file is simple executable. As suggested, did "chmod +x j2sdk...rpm.bin", then executed it. All is well. Thanks.

Error installing jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin
h3. Hello,
h3.
I'm trying to install jmf-2_1_1e-linux-i586.bin on a Linux(centos 5.1) system. I get the results at the end of this post after accepting the license agreement. I haven't found anything on the web or the bug database that has been helpful. I'm really at my wits end and could use a helping hand.
h3.
Thanks in advance.

I guess, you can find the solution to your problem here:
It works well on Ubuntu, but since the error on Ubuntu looks exactly the same as on Centos, I think it should work for you as well.

How to install rpm.bin file with rpm
Have downloaded Java...rpm.bin for Linux. rpm doesn't recognize bin file. Can't find doc to explain what utility converts rpm.bin to simple rpm. What do I use? Thanks.
It took me some time to figure it out,
once you downloaded the j2sdk...rpm.bin file, it is a self installation file,
1) make sure the file is executable
#chmod 755 j2sdk1.4.0_01.rpm.bin
2) execute the file
#./j2sdk1.4.0_01.rpm.bin
this will install the package and inflate the rpm...
good luck. -
J2sdk-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe didn't install JRE correctly.
I realize that j2sdk-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p.exe didnt install JRE probably.
Server folder which is used for Java HotSpot Server VM was not found in C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_04\bin.
Hence, i need to manually copy the folder D:\j2sdk1.4.2_04\jre\bin\server to JRE location.
I was wondering is this the correct way to do so? anyone of u have encounter this problem before?
thank you.
regards
yanchengIf a previous version of the JRE is installed, remove the previous JRE and install the j2sdk 1.4.2_04 JRE.
