J2SE 5.0 release 4

Hi,
I installed J2SE 5.0 release 4 on my ibook G4 running OSX 10.4.5 and several applications stopped working such as Safari, mail, ichat. These applications start up but immediatley quit with an error pop-up box saying "The application xxx quit unexpectedly". The report looks something like this:-
Link (dyld) error:
Symbol not found: __ZN3KJS9ObjectImpC2Ev
Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/WebCore.frame work/Versions/A/WebCore
Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/JavaScriptCor e.framework/Versions/A/JavaScriptCore
In addtion the software update has stopped working - the progress bar sits on about 10% and doesn't move even after several hours.
Is there anyway of uninstalling J2SE 5.0 release 4 and reverting back to version 3 ?. I also can't do a repair on the OSX because I have 10.4.0 on CD and not 10.4.5. Is a complete re-install the only way forward ?
Thanks

Have you run "Apple Hardware Test"?
If CD's came with your computer it is on a CD labeled "Hardware Test" To test with CD, insert the CD and restart holding the "c" key until you see the spinning gear.
If DVD insert DVD then:
1. Turn on or restart the computer.
2. Immediately press and hold the Option key. After a few seconds, the Startup Manger screen appearsThe Startup Manager scans for available volumes.
3. Optional: Clicking the circular arrow rescans for other volumes, including NetBoot Server volumes. You can eject any disc in the drive or open an empty tray-loading drive by holding down the Command (Apple) and Period (.) keys. The Command-Period key combination will also close the drive. After inserting a CD capable of starting up your computer, you could rescan for volumes.
4. Click the startup volume you want to use. "Hardware Test"
If hardware test does not mount or does not run bring the computer to Authorized Apple Repair.
Let us know.

  • System error after installing 10.4.6 Update and J2SE 5.0 Release 4

    Hi,
I just installed OS X 10.4.6 update and J2SE 5.o Release 4 and the system doesn't start any more. I get a black screen which says:
[date] [my computer name] getty:/dev/console: Operation not supported by device
    Any suggestions?
I will try to start from CD (when I am home later), but first I need to eject the DVD, which is still in the drive. How to do this when the system does not start?
    Thanks,
    Ulrike

    Hi Ulrike,
I will try to start from CD (when I am home later),
but first I need to eject the DVD, which is still in
the drive. How to do this when the system does not
    start?
All CD/DVD drives that come installed in a Mac should allow you to eject the CD/DVD tray. Check your owner's manual--the instructions on how to eject the tray are usually given there. For example, on some PowerBook models you had to gently insert a paper clip into one side of the loading slot and push. On the DVD drive in my PowerMac there is a small hole through which I can instert a paper clip.
As for what is causing your problems, I don't know. From what I've gathered, however, installing the combo update (~140 megs) is more reliable than the incremental one (~60 megs). Booting from an external drive helps, too. You might try that.

  • Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 1

I'm trying to use Shutterfly, an on-line photo service and am having problems. They recommended checking on my Java edition. I did at the Java check version site and got this report "You do NOT have the latest version of Java software.
The latest version of Java software = Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6." So I downloaded but when I tried to install, I got this message: "You cannot install J2SE 5.0 Release 1 Package on this volume. This volume contains a newer version of Java 1.5." OK, I'm stumped...according to Java I don't have the current edition, but can't install it because I have a newer version? Am I missing a critical step...would sincerely appreciate any help?

According to http://developer.apple.com/releasenotes/Java/Java50Release4RN/index.html, you have J2SE 5.0 Release 4 installed. Where that fits in with Update 6, I don't have a clue. This might help, http://forums.macosxhints.com/showthread.php?t=47531.

  • Question about the new JAVA Update J2SE 5.0 Release 3

Here is some info about this update:
Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 3 allows applications and applets developed for the J2SE 5.0 platform to run on Mac OS X v 10.4.2 and later.
This update does NOT CHANGE the DEFAULT VERSION of Java on your Mac from Java 1.4.2 to J2SE 5.0, though Java applications that require J2SE 5.0 may specifically request it. You can change the preferred Java version for applications and applets by using the new Java Preferences utility. This utility is installed by the J2SE 5.0 update at /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302412
    HERE IS MY QUESTION---
This update makes me nervous cause I don't know much about Java. IF I change my default version to this new 5.0 will it mean that some of the older Java stuff on the web won't work? Should I just download this and ignore it? What should I do about this update?
    Thanks for the help!
    Renée

I too seem to be suffering issues with loading web pages after the 10.4.3/Java 5.0 update. I have reinstalled both updates, changed the java settings, emptied all the caches, and tried various combinations thereof, and I still have problems with web pages loaded. most of the problems appear to be related to rendering frames and images - In fact a couple of web sites I navigate to (upon looking at the source for the page" state "It appears your browser does not support frames." I think this is something broken in the latest release. Unfortunately, I cannot reinstall the latest copy of Safari, because the installer states "This version of Safari cannot be installed. It requires version 10.4.2." I guess I am in a pickle until Apple comes out with another update. BTW I have some pages that Safari will not render but IE running on the same box will. I also noticed that the problem propagated to other applications that use Java....For instance the Dashboard widget from google (Google Maps) no longer renders the tiled (framed?) map pieces...instead you get the ubiquitous "?" icon.

  • J2SE 1.4 Release Candidate & Java Web Start

    Hi:
We installed the J2SE 1.4 Release Candidate and our Java Web Start applications which previously worked now won't run. Upon their launch, there is the following error message :
Error Code 11 (11 Could not locate requested version) returned from server when accessing resource (http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se, 1.4.0-rc)
Does anyone know why this is?
    All replies are greatly appreciated!
    Sincerely,

    Hi:
I tried what you suggested in the jnlp file:
    <j2se version="1.4 1.4.0-rc" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se"/>
and I am still getting the error:

  • Unable to install Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 4

After Downloading Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 4
my desktop computer won't recognize the .dmg formatt and this is the messege i get: The following image/disk failed to mount j2Se50Relese4.dmg i have MAC OSX 10.4.6 on a Dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5. I also have StuffIT expander and it won't recognize it either.

Actually. No, all the problems i've been having has happened with any java downloads with the .dmg formatt all other applications where succefully unstuff.
Your answer is unclear. Can you mount other disk images by double-clicking on their .dmg files? Have you repaired permissions with Disk Utility?
I wonder if it has something to be with the versions of the upgrade. do i need to download them in an expecific order or something?
It depends. Some updates won't be applicable until you install a previous one. For example, some Security Updates won't work unless you an OS update in place.
i currently have install java 1.3.1 plug in and 1.4.2 plug in. i've never open the application thought.
If you mean the Java Plugin Settings.apps for those versions, then that's normal. I have those in addition to the Java Preferences.app from J2SE 5, which I believe is the new name for the settings.app.

  • J2SE 5.0 Release 4 issues.

Since a couple of days ago, after the installation of the J2SE 5.0 Release 4 I've got some problems. Some websites show the Java window, the new one, with the cup of coffee with the sun running in the back, and a progress bar in the bottom. Well, the progress bar is always empty, and the sun, yes, always making an infinite turn. If you one to check this is one of the websites: http://www.deba.net/webcam.asp?idbd=5

At first sight Java is working better now, after some basic "treatment". Anyway, Java is still a debt in the OS X field. I mean from both sides: Apple and Java.

Not sure if anyone else is experiencing any problems with functionality of there browsers since installing the update.
I'm not able to log onto virtual online meetings. When the applet tries to load I get the following error message -
"I'm sorry, but you do not have the correct version of Apple's Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ) installed. CCC Confer requires MRJ version 2.2.3 or greater to run.
Just click on the link below to go to Apple's website where you will be provided with detailed instructions on how to install the new MRJ. Please be sure to install MRJ version 2.2.3 or later.
Note that registration is required to access the Apple Care site.

I'm not able to install the older version of Java as it requires Mac OS 8 or 9 to install.
Is there some way to go back or disable the newer version of Java?

  • SMC and J2SE 1.5

    I'm running Solaris 9 x86 09/04. The only patch I've applied is:

as recommended by the J2SE 1.5 release notes. After installing J2SE 1.5, the Solaris Management Console is broken. If I try to start it from the command line, it bombs with:

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

I've resolved this issue. On Solaris 9 x86, the default Java installation resides in /usr/j2se. The JavaHelp packages required by SMC install their files to this directory. The Java 5.0 SE installation instructions advise you to redirect the /usr/j2se link to /usr/jdk/jdk1.5.0 if you want Java 5.0 to be your default Java installation. If you do this, you will lose the JavaHelp files and SMC will break.
    I resolved this issue by:
    1) removing the JavaHelp packages (SUNWjhdem, SUNWjhdev, SUNWjhdoc, SUNWjhrt)
    2) deleting the /usr/j2se directory
    3) linking /usr/j2se to /usr/jdk/jdk1.50
    4) reinstalling the JavaHelp packages (available on disc 2 of the installation set)
SMC now starts and runs normally. It uses the new Ocean laf which I think is much more attractive than Metal. Good work, Sun!

  • Apple releases Java update for Mac OS X Tiger

Apple released J2SE 5.0 Release 4 on Tuesday, an update for Mac OS X 10.4.5 Tiger users. According to notes provided with the update the release delivers improved reliability and compatibility for the Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0. With today's release J2SE 5.0 becomes the preferred Java version, superseding Java 1.4.2. Apple notes that Java 1.4.2 is still installed on the machine, but applications will run with J2SE 5.0 unless they specifically request Java 1.4.2. The update is available as a download from Apple's Web site
or via the Software Update mechanism in Mac OS X.

When I go to the DOWNLOADS Section of the Apple Support page and find the Java update, I see "(PPC)" next to it. Does that mean anything?

  • New Java Release

I just got the J2SE 5.0 Release 4 in my Software Update.
Can anybody tell me if they are having any problems with it on a Rev A iMac 20”.

    Hi, woodie.
Well, it works fine on my Power Mac G5 Dual 2.3 GHz.
Whenever a new update is available in Software Update, the Discussions are usually flooded with a raft of "should I install this?" questions.
There are also a set of related posts shortly thereafter claiming the update "Destroyed my Mac, ran off with my wife, and kicked my dog."
Usually both sets of issues can be avoided by following the guidelines in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ.
And before someone raises the issue of the Photoshop / AFP problem that resulted from the 10.4.6 Update, I submit this is a Photoshop bug.
Adobe seems to have developed a practice of not testing their applications with the Developer Previews of Mac OS X. Adobe now seems to prefer to wait until an Update causes a problem, rather than finding problems in their code that will arise due to changes introduced in the Mac OS X Update. Third-party developers, such as Adobe, have both the opportunity — through membership in the Apple Developer Program — and the responsibility for testing their applications and identifying issues that may arise in Updates by testing with the Developer Previews of Mac OS X Updates.
Likewise, if folks would get in the habit of making backups of their running Mac OS X installation before installing Software Updates, as recommended in my FAQ cited above, they would have a fallback position in the event that an Update was either problematic, buggy, or failed to install properly. Using a computer without having implemented a proper Backup and Recovery solution, and using it regularly, is like driving without auto insurance.
    Good luck!

  • Anyone know when 1.3.1_03 will be released

I bet no one knows this, but it's worth a shot. Anyone know when 1.3.1_03 of J2SE will be released?
    Thanks,
    Troy

So back to the original question - does anyone know when it will be released? One of the bugs I'm watching has supposedly been fixed in that load, but it has been a month and a half of waiting for that load. Thanks.

  • Mac OS 10.4.6 won't startup

Need some expert help--Well, what a way to start a day--
    This is what is happening:
When I start-up I get the grey apple screen with the wheel and I am stuck in a loop--have tried restarting numerous times.
This is what occurred before the incident:
    Software Utilities detected two updates:
    --J2SE 5.0 Release 4 (PPC)
--Mac OS X 10.4.6 for PPC
I asked it to install and it appears the J2SE was, but half-way through the OS update, there was an error message saying something to the effect that the internet connection was lost and the OS files had been placed in the trash.
Then funny things started to happen (I plugged my iPod in at the same time--it is attached to my Firewire drive). I attempted to empty the trash as instructed and in the meantime had shut down all the rest of the apps--The trash would not empty and I couldn't quit the empty process, so did a hard restart.
This is what I have tried to do:
Start-up from my Mac OS 10.4. disk--it wants me to install and is a previous version of 10.4 and I don't have enough room on my hard drive to do an archive and install with the basic system.
Did a repair disk and repair disk permissions on the hard drive--no disk errors, but a great many permissions need to be repaired.
Please help! (and no I didn't back-up since I installed the new system 3 weeks ago, but the only really crucial item is my Entourage data file--everything else I store on my external firewire drive)--I can do an erase and install the software, but need to get those files off my hard drive!
If I can move the files so I can do an archive and install--my preference--I will also need the instructions on how to be a root user so I can get rid of the previous library folder.
I promise everyone out there that Backup will be my first task once I get back up and running.
Thanks in advance for your help. Caroline

To do an Archive and Install you are going to need to provide about 6 GBs of free space on the hard drive. Even then that is a squeeze - more free space would be preferable under the circumstances. I would shoot to have at least 10 GBs free before starting the Archive and Install. If you install everything in Tiger then you will need even more free space. A complete install of Tiger will require about 4-5 GBs and you need about twice that much during installation plus additional space for operations and the Previous System Folder.
Before doing an Archive and Install you should boot from your Tiger DVD and run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive (you don't need to repair permissions.) Do not attempt an Archive and Install unless the hard drive is verified as OK.
If the Archive and Install is successful you will then want to download and install the 10.4.6 Combo Updater. You will also likely need to move some items from the PSF to the new installation. Particularly items in the /Library/Applications Support/ folder. These are not preserved in the Archive and Install.
You should be able to remove the unwanted PSF by dragging it to the Trash, then restart the computer. Upon restart simply empty the Trash.
