J2SE/JRE Version(s) on Clients

Hi All!
Can someone offer some guidance on what version(s) of J2SE/JRE we should have installed on our clients (PCs)?  We have standardized on 1.4.2_13 and are moving to 1.4.2_15 for Vista support, but we've run into several situations where SAP is asking for us to also install 1.5 or 1.6, and we also have other vendors asking for various versons of J2SE/JRE.  In the past we tried to use the same version as the version on the server, but we're finding this is hard to do.
Also, if you're running multiple versions, how do you manage cases where 2 browser apps want to use different versions since (at least with IE) it appears only one can be the default.
Thanks!
Jeff

Jeff,
Unfortunately, as you have realised, you're stuffed when it comes to IE and Java.  Only one can be used.
We have to produce a certified list of apps that can be run against a common JRE.  It looks like a neat matrix sheet and normally works around the lowest common denominator of JRE.
Unless SAP don't support you on older JRE versions, don't be bullied by them into upgrading.
Unless there is a very compelling reason (e.g. you need a patch that requires an upgrade) then I wouldn't change it, for simplicities sake.
I found this link to be of use though:

  • Detect JRE version of the Client Browser fiom a JSP

    I have an Applet that is called from a JSP page that works only in certain JRE versions .
    I was wondering if there is a way of finding the Installed JRE version of the Client ...

    You could use some of the old traditional Javascript code that determines what browser it's running in, and have that code pass different parameters to the applet based on its determination.

  • J2EE and related J2SE/JRE versions

    I understand the difference between J2EE and J2SE/SDK/JDK, and JRE. However, I'm having trouble identifying what version of SDK each of the J2EE versions uses. Maybe they match up.
    For example, if I have an old project someone says was built with J2EE 1.3 SDK, does that use J2SE/JRE 1.3? Does Java EE 5 use Java 1.5? 1.6? 1.4? (For example, if I'm setting Eclipse Compiler Compliance Level for a J2EE 1.3 project, what should it be?)

    is there a way for me to know what Java version that would have been or could have been compiled against?No.
    Edit: Slight clarification - the class files in the application contain a magic number that corresponds with the compiler target - so for any given class file you can determine what JRE was targeted at compile time. This can be different from the compiler version. Different classes in the same application may have been targeted to different JRE versions.
    Are there any versions of Java that it could not be compiled against?No.
    what version of Java does the Application Server on which this will be deployed support.The Application Server will be running on a JRE corresponding to a particular Java release. That JRE will support all versions of Java prior to the release. Code compiled on subsequent versions of Java can, if suitably written, be targeted to run on that version of the JRE and (depending on versions) may not need specific targeting to do so. Whether they in fact work or not depends entirely on what library calls they make.
    What's the business requirement that drives this request?

  • J2SE JRE on a thin client problems!!!!!!!!!!

    HELP!
    I would like some help regarding a situation where a webstartable application totalling approx 400k as a prototype app is being sent to a thin client. This thin client is a Wyse computer with a 96mb flash card for its hard disk space. The Java app uses the Swing api and JBoss client jars. The application works smoothly on WinNT or Win2000, 256mb, 700Mhz PC installed with J2SE but the problem is that the target client has a Windows NT Embedded OS which only gives around 7.5mb free hard disk space on its flash card. This is a problem as the client OS needs Java 2 JRE which is a whopping 20.8mb. WebStart when installed totals to approx 1.9mb on a PC. So, the complete deployment for the application would reach approximately 24mb going way past the 7.5mb max limit. The client does have IE+MSJava but uninstalling this JVM is not an option as apparently, it is being used for some other app. I am aware of the option of upgrading the machine but that won't go down too well as it will involve upgrading hundreds of clients. Also, this demo needs to show off Swing to the max so that such an upgrade decision can be made. Getting the application+JRE+WebStart deployed within the limit means that there will be a chance for Java to grow on both the client and server side in Carphone Warehouse, one of the top mobile phone retail companies in the UK. However, if this is not achieved then the alternative is that IE will be used to provide an HTML-based limiting, slow user interface for our users in our stores.
    A related question I have is whether J2Micro Edition is an avenue that may be useful to explore. I have looked at it a little and as a guess I'd say that the configurations I have found are for too simple for the device targetted by us as it is near enough to a PC's spec except that it has limited chip power, hard disk and memory space.
    Please could someone help us with this as it would really promote Java in our company.
    regards,
    Amar Syed

    Well, here are a few suggestions, although I'm not sure how feasible they are at this point...
    1) Is it essential that you use WebStart and have the code on the client? That's not really a "Thin client" solution... ;-) Can you refactor your app as a JApplet, and just use the java plugin to run it (~5MB)? This would still enable you to use swing. (You could even just have a "launching" applet in a browser that launches your main GUI JFrame in front of the browser.)
    2) I've never used this product, but it's worth a mention - WebCream, by CreamTect (http://www.creamtec.com/webcream/) - it runs your swing app on the server, and sends a DHTML representation of it to the client's browser. Looks pretty convincing from their examples...
    3) J2ME is probably not an option, since it doesn't support Swing - it has its own limited API for displaying stuff on mobile devices' small screens.
    4) Failing that, there's still server-side java - the JSP/Servlet option, creating your own customized HTML (or super-interactive DHTML) pages and sending them to a browser on the client machine.
    Hope some of this helped a little! Let us know how you get on.

  • Checking Client JRE version

    This problem is killing me! I need to check what version the
    client's JRE is so that they can download and run my app from my web server. They need JRE 1.4.1, and if they don't have it, I want to redirect (potentially) to a page I will create that will inform them of the requirements. (The client will never have admin rights, so can't install it directly from Sun)
    I've looked at Jsp and applet solutions but can't get anywhere with it. Does anyone have any ideas on getting around the security issues?
    To clarify a bit more, I can have code in the applet to check the
    version on the client (jsps will only check the server version) ---
    String value = System.getProperty("java.specification.version");
    if (value == "1.4.1") {
    continue and go to a http page -- but can't redirect from an applet
    else {
    redirect to an error page or inform the server somehow so I can
    redirect the browser.
    Any way I can redirect a http page somehow from an applet?
    Or set a property in the server which could be read elsewhere...
    elpico

    use Applet.getAppletContext() to get the AppletContext that represents the page currently displayed by the browser.
    then do AppletContext.showDocument(URLurl) to redirect to another page.
    AppletContext currentPage = this.getAppletContext();
    String value = System.getProperty("java.specification.version");
    if (value == "1.4.1")
    //OK -> continue.htm
    currentPage.showDocument(new URL("http://localhost/continue.htm"));
    else {
    //ERROR -> error.htm
    currentPage.showDocument(new URL("http://localhost/error.htm"));
    }thx for the dukes ;),

  • How to find JRE Version on client machine

    My client machine does not have any class file, they are running web pages on web Browser.
    We have some specific plug-in based on JRE Versions (e.g. JRE 5 or JRE 6).
    Also we do not have permission to run an applet on client machine as its a security concern.
    We have following senerio
    Application server on Machine-1
    Web Server on Machine-2
    Client on Machine-3
    We need JRE version of Machine-3.
    Please provide me a solution.
    Thanks in advanced.

    Old post but replying anyways so that the solution can be used for later
    For Firefox/Mozilla/Netscape this can be done through javascript like below
         for (i=0; i<navigator.plugins.length; i++) {
         document.write(navigator.plugins.name);
         document.write("::::");
         document.write(navigator.plugins[i].filename);
         document.write("::::");
         document.write(navigator.plugins[i].description);
         document.write("<p>");
    It prints out "Java Plug-in::::NPJava12.dll::::Java Plug-in 1.4.1_02 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper)"
    from which the plug-in version can be found out
    For IE :
         try{
              var obj= new ActiveXObject("WScript.Shell");
              if (obj!= null) {
    //Version for the installed JRE
    var ver = shell.regRead("HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\JavaSoft\\Java\ Runtime\ Environment\\CurrentVersion");
              alert(ver);
         }catch(e){}

  • Diffculty downloading JRE version if user has no admin rights on the box...

    If you try to load in your own JRE version using the j2se tag in the JNLP file, and you don’t have Admin Rights on the computer, java webstart client will give you the following error:
    The application has requested a version of the JRE (version xxxx) that currently is not locally installed. Java Web Start is unable to automatically download and install the requested version. This JRE must be installed manually.
    The underlying reason for this, is because the user doesn’t have admin rights, the Java Control Panel->Advanced->JRE Autodownload option is set to Never AutoDownload, where as with a user with admin rights this option is set to Always AutoDownload. Once you switch this to Always AutoDownload, the JRE version is loaded correctly as specified by the j2se tag in the JNLP file.
    Is there any way to set this option programmatically, or via the JNLP API? Any other suggestions on how this can be done?
    Thanks,

  • No jre version found in launch file

    I'm using jdk1.5.0_03 (with all other versions of java removed from my system) and trying to run our web start app that specifies a version of 1.4.2*. After clicking the link to the jnlp file, web start contacts sun to retrieve 1.4.2*, then gives the dialog: "unable to launch FlowJo" (our app). On the details tab, it reports: "No JRE version found in launch file for this system".
    When I launch the web start manager, under the user applications tab, I see 3 applications: our app, our installer, and Sun's j2re1.4.2_07 installer. It seems like Sun's installer is being downloaded but never executed.
    Am I doing something wrong in my jnlp files? Both our app jnlp and our installer jnlp specify a j2se version of 1.4.2*. Below are the files and exception as reported from the web start dialog. I'm trying to set our app up for internal testing with web start, so I'm using a local ip. Our application uses a custom installer which has its own jnlp file (shown below in "launch file").
    Any help is much appreciated,

    We are using sun JRE(1.5.0_15) only. We extract Sun JRE and build it as KANAJRE.jar and signing.>I have never heard of KANAJRE. Would you care to post a link to the site, or should we just keep guessing? (My patience for random guesses is running out.)

    We install using Intaller class and that is getting listed in the Java Control panel and enabled too.>List as what?
    Does it list it with the entire string "KANA1.5.0_15" or is is just listed as "1.5.0_15"?
    Because this line from the JNLP file..
    <j2se version="KANA1.5.0_15" href="KanaJreInstaller.asp"/>..had me convinved it was a non-Sun JRE. Not so much the href, but most especially the version attribute.
    If it really is the Sun JRE, I would expect this to work.
    <j2se version="1.5.0_15" href="KanaJreInstaller.asp"/>And as an aside. If this installer is giving you trouble and the app. requires the 1.5.0_15 JRE, why not simply the default Sun JRE installer? What advantages do you think this installer offers?

  • Using tag OBJECT on a machine with multiple jre versions

    Dear friends,
    i guess that this question has been already answered, but i can't find the thread with all infos i need.
    So please excuse me if i'm redundant.
    This is my problem:
    i have a web application that runs an applet, embedded in an html page;
    by now the applet is loaded with the standard tag <APPLET>.
    I found many Sun's official pages talking about the use of OBJECT tag to specify the jre version that is supposed to run the applet.
    I tried many ways but i can't reach the way to avoid loading the applet with the latest jre installed on my pc.
    Here is the code of my OBJECT:
    <OBJECT NAME="client" CLASSID="clsid:CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0009-ABCDEFFEDCBB" HEIGHT="38" WIDTH="335" >
                          <PARAM NAME="NAME" VALUE="client">
                          <PARAM name="type" value="application/x-java-applet;jpi-version=1.4.2_09">
                             <PARAM NAME="CODE" VALUE="it.fabio.client">
                             <PARAM NAME="CODEBASE" VALUE="/myapp">
                             <PARAM NAME="ARCHIVE" VALUE="mylib.jar">
                   </OBJECT>The machines where the application is deployed have the 1.4.2_09 and the 1.5.0_03 jre versions, but my applet runs only on 1.4.2_09 version.
    So i have to find a way to tell the browser which jre has to be called.
    Thanks in advance for help.
    Regards

    Wait a second...there is more to that error message that I overlooked before.
    There might be something other than just the way I set the CODE and CODEBASE parameters wrong here
    Any ideas?

  • Problem selecting the right jre version with jnlp

    I am using Webstart 1.4.2.
    When instaling, it correctly found 2 jre versions on my system, 1.4.1_03 and 1.4.2.
    Because our application currently is not working with 1.4.2 I need to force webstart to use 1.4.1_03.
    I tried to set the tag <j2se version="1.4.1_03"
    When loading from the websever I get a "Error Code 11 (11 Could not locate requested version) "...same if I explicitly set to 1.4.2.
    I suspect that webstart is checking the "platform version" which are set for both to 1.4 and not the "product version" (see java preferences in webstart).
    Does somebody know if there is another jnlp tag I can use to force a specific version? or any other workaround.
    In my opinion this is a bug webstart should check the product version
    Thanks Marc

    had the same problem...
    ad the url and try again:
    <resources>
    <j2se version="1.4.1_03" href="http://java.sun.com/products/autodl/j2se"/>
    <jar href="...
    as far as I now are not all JRE's available for autodownload.
    Good luck!
