J2SE Public Beta Testing Call

J2SE Version 1.4.2_01 will be released with two new features:
* Auto Java Update
* Windows Install from the Web
Grab the chance to help Sun test these two Java software features
starting June 23 through July 11, 2003 plus the chance to get a cool
T-shirt. Testing will include downloading, installing, and updating a
test version of the J2SE Java Runtime Environment (JRE) v5.5.5.
Get the testing details now at:

I too was surprised by this announcement.
To tell you truth, after having downloaded and installed I got suspicious and started to write a post accusing Stanley Ho of being a hacker who had managed to hack the website in order to trick us into downloading and installing hostile software!!! What worried me was that I couldnt find a single link to this page from the J2SE pages.
Luckily I write slowly, and began to wonder before I was ready to post if there might be some other way to check into the matter before I caused a great scandal with false accusations. And then I found Stanleys name along with other Sun employees in a chat transcript - I'm glad I checked before posting!
Sorry, Stanley, but the announcement being your first post here added to my (unnecessary as it turned out) suspicions.
And as everyone else Im still very eager to hear of any news about the forthcoming 1.4.2 release
Best regards,
Lars Ugleberg

  • Yosemite Beta tester

I was part of the public beta test for Yosemite.  Since the general release, I still have the last beta build.  The app store doesn't offer an update on this computer.  Is this typical and do I have to just wait for the next update?
    Thanks!

I wondered about this too and found the articles above via twitter. But today I get an email from Apple saying,
Thanks for participating in the OS X Yosemite Beta Program. As you know, OS X Yosemite brings an elegant redesign, continuity features for using your Mac, iPhone, and iPad together, and major enhancements to the apps you use every day. And it’s now available for free from the Mac App Store.
    Get OS X Yosemite
Please install the release version of OS X Yosemite. As a member of the OS X Beta Program, you will continue to be offered beta versions of OS X software updates on any Mac that you installed the beta on. However, if you prefer to stop receiving beta updates, please click here.
So now I'm confused. Anyone have clarity?

  • Rimscape Beta Testing Begins

A game that I've been working on for the last for the past six months is now ready for public beta testing.
Rimscape is a sci-fi trading and combat game where you can pilot a variety of spacecraft, arm them with a large selection of weaponry, and explore a randomly generated galaxy. It is a game in the style of Escape Velocity and Solar Winds.
The game can be played on the Gamelizard website. A link to the game can be found in the news article "Rimscape Updates and More."
    http://www.gamelizard.com/
In order to save your games you will need to register at Gamelizard.
Just to clarify, the current version of the game is the webstart version, not the one under "Play Now" or in the games section. The website will be updated with the correct links shortly.
    http://www.gamelizard.com/webstart/rimscape.php
Some elements of the game such as the main campaign of quests are still being worked on. We're looking to remove bugs and balance the various items in the game.
Over the next week the Gamelizard site will be updated for the beta to include things such as a forum for testers. Also updates will be continually made to the game.

I actually did READ the instructions. The part about pressing action key 'ENTER' to purchase a ship.
You asked about public beta testing, well that's what I'm doing.
Do you want my feed back or not?
meaning, like, total **** cardtotal what **** card???
again second time running this game, I get 4 -10 fps on screen menu, user interface.
Bad, poor user interface, again could not purchase ship, due to bad fps.
After pressing enter key 10 times, clicking on the ship ten times with mouse, it finally purchased.
Not easy to use menu system.
Once playing game, fps went up to 25 - 30, which is good.

  • My trial version calls itself Public Beta 4?????

Install went fine. I thought I would try a set of 126 RAW files. I used the "standard previews" option. It took a long time, apx 5 minutes, for thumbs to start appearing. When working on the first photo the changes were not reflected in the preview but later ones showed up fine. Hmmmm. Actually the changes showed up in the first one when I clicked on a subsequent shot. Really wierd.
Have I got the right version? I had previously only worked with jpegs in beta 1.0 so can't really compare. In the "about" it calls itself "public beta 4" That doesn't seem right for the trial version that I just downloaded today. What do you think?

    I went to http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshoplightroom/
and clicked on the "try it for 30 days" button. Looks pretty official. What version does yours say when you click on "about?" In my "add/remove software" section it lists it as version 1.00.0000. I really hope that somehow I got the wrong version cause this one isn't working well at all.

  • Public Beta?  Documentation?  API Reference?  Sample Code?

    Dear Adobe:
Is this beta just for testing existing code to see if the new player version breaks our existing code?
Or is this beta intended as a public beta to allow developers to use the new capabilities in FP11/AIR3?
Based on the release announcement stating "Introduces features" it seemed like it was intended to allow all interested developers to access the new APIs.  If this is true, can an Adobe employee explain what a "beta" of FP11/AIR3 means without documentation or code samples?  Or, if docs and/or samples are public can you reply on this post with the links?
I do see the link on the Features page for "Stage3D APIs (`Molehill`) for Flash Player".  I would very much appreciate if you could add a similar link for a page with details on "H.264/AVC SW Encoding for Camera"  :-)
Best regards from the lead on a loyal developer team chomping at the bit to build great solutions using the new FP11/AIR3 capabilities.
    Best regards,

    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/877452

Here's what I've heard from one of our community managers regarding stage3d:
"Thibault Imbert posted a discussion of what Stage3D is all about back then at http://www.bytearray.org/?p=2555. NJ also posted a more beginner level discussion of what it is all about at http://www.rictus.com/muchado/2011/02/28/demystifying-molehill-part-1/. Assuming they actually do intend to use these low level API’s (which I doubt most people will want to or have the ability even to do so), a site called iFlash3D covered it in great detail in a two part series discussing the ins-and-outs of AGAL (http://iflash3d.com/shaders/my-name-is-agal-i-come-from-adobe-1/ and http://iflash3d.com/shaders/my-name-is-agal-i-come-from-adobe-2/) as well as a reference card for AGAL http://iflash3d.com/site/agal-reference-card-available/. Or another that discusses how to manage cameras in a 3D space http://iflash3d.com/flash3d-coding/flash-3d-molehill-cameras/. Beyond those sites, most people aren’t discussing the details of the Stage3D api’s for a general audience that I have found."
I asked about the other new features (audio compression, surround sound, video encoding, etc.) but they hadn't seen anything created yet.  However, they are interested in getting content developed for these areas and will work on getting that done.  Look for third party resources and ADC updates in the near future.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Is apple beta testing iphone5's?

I received a text from +1(347)604-4805 with the message: Be the first few to Beta test an iphone5 now!!! And was directed to this website: www.iphone5BetaTesting.INFO. It took me here: http://tracking.cpakingdom.com/aff_c?offer_id=203  The site was an empty page. No activity. I called the number and received an ATT auto message about the mobile number being unavailable. Anyone know what this is? Legit? Scam?

If Apple were beta testing any new hardware no one would know about it except the people who were invited to test it - developers. They would not speak publicly because it would violate the NDA.

  • TOSHIBA Please Read - Beta Testing and Developer Community

    Hello Jim,
I wanted to respond to your posting about the status of the update but the thread has been locked, so I started a new one. Anyway, I was wondering if there was a chance that we could get a beta test version of the software provided to experienced and brave individuals that can report back to the dev team with various issues and bugs to be fixed?
The public beta will not only appease the people angry at Toshiba for missing the deadline for the update, but also provide necessary feedback to the development team that can be used to create a more feature complete update. As an Android developer myself, I would take every oppurtunity to report bugs and issues and even provide code to help implement fixes for various issues if said source is availible. I believe it would be a great idea for Toshiba to create an open source development community on these forums and to provide us with bleeding edge code for us to implement and mess around with.
Such communities already exist on various sites like XDA Developers but not with vendor support, if Toshiba provided a vendor-supported developer community around the Thrive and other Android devices such as the Excite and Folio. With a vendor supported community, we would have a place where Toshiba can make better software for the devices and developers and brave regular users can participate in the process of getting updates for our various devices. I believe that moving away from such a closed development environment would not only help Toshiba develop better devices and software, but also give the company a leg up on its competitors who do not have such a community pitching in allowing for better software to be coded.
I hope that this message is read by someone at Toshiba that can make this happen, as the benefits are truly mutual, since Toshiba would be getting better software for its devices and developers get the resources and code needed to turn Toshiba into one of the best supporters of this great open-source project.
If anyone from Toshiba would like to contact me to help coordinate such an undertaking, I may be reached at [email protected]
    Thank You For Your Time,
    Rob Gries
    Android Developer

    Hi Rob,
Thanks for the thoughtful message. Your points are well made and, while I don't disagree that there are mutual benefits, Toshiba has no current plans for directly building or supporting a developer community.
On the other hand, private beta testing for the Thrive product line was first launched last summer and I expect it to be ongoing as major software updates reach reasonably usable states within the development process. However, you won't see discussion of beta testing in the message boards because beta testers are under NDA.
Thanks again for the thoughts and for your interest in developing for Thrive!
    Jim

  • Are we Beta testing the N97 for Nokia?

Because if i was given this as a beta release i would have told them what i thought, the current launch version on the N97 with V10 firmware is barely an Alpha release, this phone was a rush job thrown out on the market to coincide with the launch of the iphone 3Gs.
This is my fourth N series, N80, N95, N95 8gb (the best N series yet), and now this N97 what should be Nokia's flagship, but being stripped of apps and filled with Trial versions to please the accountants at Nokia.
Day one and it locked up twice, corrupted my contacts when synced with OVI, and ran down to less than 4mb on the C drive, day 2 i found the GPS was not working, it was a joke, walking down the road under a clear sky and it could not hold a signal lock, driving was worse barely holding a signal for a few seconds and as for sitting spinning it round for an age to get the compass to work........forget it id rather be lost than look like a **bleep**.
Deleting apps and reinstalling them on the mass memory frees up some space, but why should we have to do this, the whole phone is badly thought out and configured.
Soon after the stylus supplied with the phone and attached to the phones only tie point scratched my screen, what was wrong with a rear cover with a bump and a thin PDA style stylus, no not good enough for Nokia, a fat thing on a string will do for them.
New Firmware release 4 days after UK launch and still not available to most users as it has not been network approved yet, 3 network say its Nokia's job and they are delaying things, Nokia say its the networks delay. Come on if it was needed that quickly why leave most of your customers waiting, or just get to work on a layered OS with a standardised core with a network layer, so everyone can have the updated without waiting.
4 weeks in on this phone, i too have the scratched camera lens, still No working GPS, and having some good negotiations with Three to try to reverse the contact upgrade, as i don't think another N97 will last any longer than this one.
I see Nokia spending Millions on punting the N97, TV, Billboards, Net adds, why push so hard on what is a sub standard product, could you imagine Joe public trying to free off some memory by moving apps, tell the care centres to brace themselves the N97 flood will be coming their way.
What next, well if 3 don't cancel the upgrade, then Nokia will have to fix my phone again and again and again untill it works as advertised, in the mean time i am off to get in touch with watchdog so they can let Joe Public know what to expect from an N97.
    Rob
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I don't believe we're beta testing the N97 for Nokia. Beta testing suggests it is in a state prior to production. Nokia's track record (at least to me) seems that leading edge phones never reach a stable plateau.
What I believe happens is the phone is released and remains unstable until they sort of perfect the platform, then a new handset is released bringing a whole new world of bugs and problems and so the cycle continues.
By the time the phone is suitable for every day use it is, by today's technological stance, ancient and the damage has already been done to the reputation.
S40 phones seem to fare much better, mainly because it is much more widely used within Nokia. S60 is up against some fine competition from vendors who will rush fixes out.. Nokia only ever seems to rush phones out. It isn't the same and it shows (see their forcast for the next 6 months)
I honestly would not be surprised if this flagship phone limps on in a partially functional state until it is superceeded by a budget blackberry clone.
Sad? Very! Am I being cynical, or telling it like it is.
I'd be real interested to know if any exec at Nokia used the N97 in the weeks before it was released.. Not that I'm a fan, but we all know Stevie J used an iphone long before it was released.. I kind of get the impression they must all use very basic "corporate" s40 handsets and assume their flagship product must be of the same calibre.
Next release, why not give 100 people N97 for testing, real testing.  It seems Nokias quality assurance team is out of touch with what a $700 handset demands.. ooooh, I gasp in awe at your 30 MB of free capactity when you remove ALL the applications you can. (It's like having a 2TB hard drive in a computer and continuing to boot from a floppy)
I appreciate there are product time lines to meet, but if Nokia were aiming to compete with the likes of the pre, iphone and the various android handsets (not even mentioning windows mobile) rushing out a phone like this was very wide of the mark. Concept wise, the N97 is a great design.. the implementation of both the hardware and software just isn't going to cut it in todays market..
(but this is what they want? you'll get bored with the handset and buy a replacement! yeay!)

  • I want Safari 4 Public Beta back.

I know the Beta version was for testing, but I liked my tabs on top of the window! I just ran Software Update, but shouldn't have installed the new version of Safari! It was fine (except I had to reach for the corner of each tab to drag, but I got used to it). I googled "Safari 4 Public Beta," but all the links referred me to the new version!
Also, is it just me or does the new version load slower than the Beta version?

Please refer to one of the other many, many, many threads on this same subject here in the forums. They will give you the download link and instructions to reinstall the beta, but do remember that you will do so at some risk, because Safari 4 has addressed over 50 security issues that were not in the beta release. Sometimes it is better to post you specific issues so other users can help you address them and get Safari 4 running as it should like it does for most of the other millions of users who downloaded it and are running it with no problems whatsoever (and so don't bother posting here in the ER.) Good luck
    Cheers

  • Thanks for Beta testing the iPhone. Let me know when you're happy with it.

I am so happy that Fresno was sold out of iPhones the day I went to buy one. Since then, I have been reading about all the problems the phones are having, and I'm glad I didn't get one. I am a loyal Mac user and look forward to owning an iPhone. I'm just glad there are people like you willing to beta test for Apple, and help them work out all the bugs. When you can hear the phone, visit flash websites, watch internet movies, and use a yahoo account successfully, sign me up. Until then, thanks for you hard work and patience.

You are 100% correct in calling this a Beta version.
I was a Q/A engineer for Intuit and Srint gave us
phone to Beta test for them when they first came out.
I have to say it was hard to find a funtion with a
"bug" in it. Wheras it is hard to find a feature in
the I-Phone that is bug free. I would have to say the
Weather feature works well... Its those other seldom
used features like the phone, calendar, contacts, and
it web are still in step one beta!! And foget aobut
support... I am still waiting on a return call from
    engineering for 5 days now.
Why would Sprint/Intuit give you the iPhone to test? It isn't even on their network much less a CDMA phone.
