  • Reinstalling Tiger: Software Update Missing Many Updates

I've seen a few similar topics on this issue, but only in so far as Software Update missing an update here or an update there. I am currently reinstalling Tiger on a Power Macintosh G3 B&W that has been heavily upgraded. The system specs are as follows..
1GHz PowerLogix G3 (using MAChSpeed to enable full processor speed since the included CPU Director software won't work in 10.4.11)
    1GB of RAM
128MB Radeon 9200 Graphics card connected to an LG 1952 display and set to 1440x900 / millions of colors
I'd go on, but the remainder of the hardware upgrades should have no effect on Software Update to the best of my knowledge. Previously I had this machine running 10.4.11, and through the Software Update program I had installed all of the recommended updates, which included numerous security updates, Safari 4.0.3, and iTunes 8.2.1. Everything was running perfectly smoothly, but after having tested several software configurations and having decided on one in particular, I set out to reinstall Tiger from scratch in order to keep things as clean as possible. I've tried several different times now with the same results each time. Once the system is up and running, regardless of whether or not I install MAChSpeed before or after running Software Update, Software Update simply does not provided all of the updates that I believe are actually there. It did see and did allow me to install the following updates..
10.4.11 Combo update (I installed this one separately before any other updates)
    Java 1.3.1 and 1.4.2 Release 2
    iTunes Phone Driver 1.0
    Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update
    Quicktime 7.6.4
    Security Update 2009-005 (PPC)
    J2SE 5.0 Release 4
Java for Mac OS X 10.4, release 5
    [ditto], release 6
    [ditto], release 7
    [ditto], release 8
    [ditto], release 9
Unless Security Update 2009-005 is meant to be a combined security update (doubtful), there are obviously several security updates that are missing. Also, I'm surprised that Software Update saw and installed Quicktime 7.6.4 but didn't see or install the latest PPC versions of iTunes or Safari. Safari 4.0.3 as I understand requires Security Update 2009-002, so naturally it would not see or install Safari without that update being installed first. While I don't necessarily mind installing updates manually (downloading them individually off Apple's support site and then installing by hand), I really prefer using Software Update to better automate the process. Up until now I have never had any problems with Software Update, but this problem is certainly aggravating. My primary concern is that I have no idea what updates are necessary and what updates are not necessary to ensure proper and relatively secure operation of my system, and I have no way of knowing whether or not Software Update will see any future updates (provided that Apple continues to support Tiger for a little while longer). If Software Update is missing crucial updates out of the gate, how can I be sure that it will see any further crucial updates that may hopefully be released?
I know that's part question / part rant, but I've been wracking my brain for the past few days over this one. Any information that could help solve this problem will definitely be appreciated, especially since my B&W is my preferred browsing machine.
Incidentally, my iBook, a Clamshell FW SE, is currently running the same setup that my B&W was previously running.. 10.4.11 with Quicktime 7.6.4, iTunes 8.2.1, and Safari 4.0.3, so as far as I can tell, this shouldn't be hardware related (my iBook is far less powerful than my B&W currently is). Also, a cursory glance at the Installed Updates list on my iBook definitely shows that my Software Update on my B&W is missing many updates.

I reformatted the drive first and did a clean install. I'm currently in the process of downloading the standalone installers for Safari 4.0.3 and iTunes 8.2.1. It's looking like that's the solution at present, but I'm still curious as to why Software Update won't see any iTunes or Safari updates within the current system configuration's capabilities (speaking to both apps possibly being cumulative). I can't see Software Update simply not having those updates because there is newer version out, if indeed they are cumulative, since that would mean that anyone reinstalling or upgrading on an older machine would be forced to perform some of the updates manually where not too long ago they would have been able to simply use Software Update as a "one stop" solution.
Oh well, maybe I'm just being too picky . I've had to deal with running around in circles to find software updates for manual installs for years with Windows systems, and Apple's "one stop" Software Update system was a wonderful, welcome change to that.

  • OS refuses to mount external USB flash drive. Says a piece of OS software is missing.

OS refuses to mount external USB flash drive. Says a piece of OS software is missing. The flash drive (thumb drive) usually lights up but does not go through the flashing on/off that was tyjpical when first inserting it.
I tried an external hard drive and got the same results; that is, no result, as if it wasn't connected. No icon appears on the desktop and no device shows up in the sidebar. It (10.6.8, Mac Pro Duo) had worked perfectly before this, of course.

    Hmmmmm,,,,
Disconnected all peripherals. Did a Safe Mode startup and that worked fine. Very limited features, of course.
Started up with the Snow Leopart (10.6.3) disk. Used disk utility to verify permissions and ran disk repair on all three internal HDs. No repairs needed.
Ran Drive Genius and did the same things, as a double-check.
Plugged in the flash drive (thumb drive) and it came up fine (still operating the OS from the Sno-Leop disk).
I wanted to re-start with the disk and bring up the Apple Hardware Test as you suggested. I had lots of kernal panics on a previous machine, a G4 desktop, and has used that at that time (with a 10.2 or 10.4 disk). thought I remembered that you hold the D key down when starting up from the disk and it would open the hardware test, but either I remember wrong or it works different in 10.6 because it was just a normal startup.
How do I get to the Hardware Test on the 10.6 Snow Leopard disk?
Restarted without the disk and the Mac Pro desktop still showed the gray screen with what Apple calls the "prohibitory" sign, the circle with the diagonal line in it.
I decided to load the OS disk onto HD 3 and designate that as the startup disk, which I did and it works fine. The USB flash drive loads properly, opens, etc. just as it should. I haven't yet plugged in the peripherals (scanner, printer, second DVD/CD recorder, tablet, an external drive, or connected to ethernet yet. Will do those one at a time and see if any of them casued a problem.)
    Am I right in thinking:
    A) HD One might have bad sections. I didn't defrag with Drive Genius (26% fragged) or look for bad blocks, which I'll probably do tonight.
or B) the OS has been slightly corrupted and may need reloading
or C) I have a virus or conflict (though I haven't added anything new lately). I do have the ButtonManager loading problem for Mac. which is talked about on MacRumors site, etc. but the timing of its appearance and this problem don't match.
Apologies for being so wordy; want to get all information that may be helpful. I appreciate your interest.

  • What is call manager doing with Jabber guest if you have no endpoints registered to Call manager?

Our Call  Manager deployment is in it's VERY early stages. We have a Telepresence infrastructure at the moment (VCS Control and Expressway). All of our TP endpoints and Jabber Telepresence clients are registered to the VCS. What is going on that the Jabber guest and VCS server need call manager for? I know it's REQUIRED in the manual and I saw a slide somewhere that said using Jabber Guest without Call manager is NOT SUPPORTED.
Realistically though, I might not get permission to build a SIP trunk between the new Call manager and VCS for some time..so...supported or not will it work without call  manager or is there something going on that's critical on call manager to make it work regardless of the fact that there is nothing registered to CUCM?
    thanks!

    Hi Douglas,
As you've gathered this configuration is not supported, and hence we don't actively test it or document it.  That said, it should work fine

  • Rendering video in Photoshop CS6-"required software extensions missing"

When trying to render a video in Photoshop CS6 I'm getting a "required software extensions missing" error. Where can I download these extensions?

Hi. You’ve posted your question in a forum that is for beginners trying to learn the basics of Photoshop.  I'm moving your question to the Photoshop General Discussion forum for specialized attention to your situation.

  • My first Jabber Guest link not working

So I believe I have everything set up correctly for Jabber Guest, but when I browse to the link I created I either get the Expressway Edge login page, or if I'm logged in to the Exp I get "The requested URL /call/8888 was not found on this server."  Maybe I'm confused on how the domains are supposed to work together, but shouldn't I be able to use the FQDN of the Expressway Edge in my Jabber Guest links?  Thanks!  Mike

From the Cisco Jabber Guest Server 10.0 Installation and Configuration Guide:
The Cisco Expressway-E administrator currently uses port 80 and therefore, incoming requests from the Cisco Jabber Guest client to Cisco Expressway-E on port 80 need to be remapped to port 9980 using a firewall (or similar) in front of Cisco Expressway-E.
The Cisco Expressway-E administrator currently uses port 443 and therefore, incoming requests from the Cisco Jabber Guest client to Cisco Expressway-E on port 443 need to be remapped to port 9443 using a firewall (or similar) in front of Cisco Expressway-E.

  • CUCM and Jabber guest configuration

    Hi Everybody ,
I would like to ask the cucm and jabber guest how configuration, I can't find the document to cisco.

    Hi,
As per the link that i shared "In a production environment, Cisco Jabber Guest requires that your Cisco Unified Communications Manager be configured to work with Cisco Expressway.
Cisco Jabber Guest can be pointed directly to Cisco Unified Communications Manager for lab deployments only. You must configure a SIP trunk on Cisco Unified Communications Manager for this deployment. This option is best suited to a lab deployment in which the goal is to familiarize yourself with Cisco Jabber Guest without the additional overhead of configuring Expressway. However, without configuring Expressway, Cisco Jabber Guest is not supported in a production environment."

  • Opening .avi file in QT & getting "some necessary QT software is missing"

Firstly, I don't know alot about Mac or QT as I've never used one until I bought my MacBook about a month ago. So forgive me if this is a stupid question!
When I try to open a .avi file in QT, I get the following message:
"Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site. If you have a dialup connection to the internet, make sure it is active, then click the Continue button to check for the software."
I'm using wireless broadand, not dialup, but anyway I click on Continue and it takes me to this Web site:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html
From there I don't know what to do. The error message of "some necessary QT software is missing" is really vague to me, so I am lost when it comes to that Components page and I don't know what to do.
I am using OS X and I have checked for any up software updates and there are none.
Can someone please tell me what I should do?! Thanks!

ok nevermind, I discovered the Seach feature of this site and got the file to open in VLC.
    Sorry!

  • Jabber Guest server Local SSL certificate

Hi , trying to download a local ssl certificate from jabberguest server and issued a 'generate a new self signed certificate' request. system shows 'a certificate signing request is being created, please wait' . unfortunetly its been like that for 2 days now - even after rebooting the server it still reports the same. (version is 10.5.3.115)....any advice appreciated.....TIA , Jeff

    Jeff,
I had a look at my Jabber Guest server this morning and oddly enough I found the same thing as you did. I'm not sure when the server got into this state however I can say it has been fully functional. Anyway, there are two options that you generally should have.
    1) "Generate a New Self-Signed Certificate"
    2) "Create a New Certificate Signing Request"
To restore these options I had to run the certificate scripts through the root of the system.
    1) cd /opt/cisco/webcommon/scripts/
    2) ./createcsr.sh   (This is for the Cert Signing Request)
    3) ./selfsigned.sh  (This is for the Self Sign)
After running each script you'll need to run through the general certificate questions.
    I hope this helps.

  • Cisco Jabber Guest Licensing

What are the licensing requirments for jabber guest.
I understand that it needs its own server and all with Expressway Edge and Core in place.
However, it there a specfic licensing required for Jabber guest

    Sean,
From what I've read, there will be a seperate license requirement for Jabber Guest... more that likely it will be based on concurrent guest sessions.
Mind you, this is the only source I could find:

  • Lost ability to connect through port forwarding after cisco guest software install

Using Remote Admin 2.2 software to remote into work computer.
E1000 I installed the cisco guest software on my pc and configured the guest about 2 months ago.
Needed to get into office PC this past weekend and connection fails.
Have a static IP address on router.  forward a single port to my office machine within the router.
Get nothing but an error on connection.  Router is 2.1.02 build 6Jan 15, 2013.
Log file shows nothing on the incoming log?  dynamic ip at home...
Another office worker, on the same internal network,  has gotomypc running and port forwarding setup on router and he is still working fine, he can access his pc from home.  The only change I have made to router was the cisco connect for guest access.
Is it possible this is stopping my remote admin?
    thanks kevin

Hey kevboac! Make sure that the computer you're using to access the remote computer is connected to the main wireless network and not to the Guest network. Being connected to the Guest network will prevent you from doing File and Printer Sharing, and Remote Access. Hope this helps!

  • What do you think open source software is missing?

What do you think open source software is missing? Can be any general gripe, missing tools, missing support, etc.
I'm waiting for a skype replacement with a windows and linux client. I only use the video and voice functionality.

    @ ngoonee
[I don't consider it OT, so I write it here - hope that OP doesn't mind]
Wrt Paul Davis, he seems to get $4-5k/month now so things are looking up a bit for him. Who's to blame if the community isn't able to come up with enough support for it's prime members? Also, there are parts of the world where you can live rather comfortably on $4k/month. You just have to beware of the dragons ;-)
Open Source is a lot like socialism: work as hard as you can, get as much as you need. In theory, it could work: some would eat 2x the avg but work 5x the avg while others would be the other way round. In practise ... People are lazy, people are evil.
Why should they pay for sth if they don't have to? Why should they be interested in GNU / Linux? Because it's free? Hey, I've got tons of "free" apps, piracy ahoy! (Or should I say "arrrrr")
Maybe that's the reason many 'big names' went to work for Microsoft: their dignity didn't allow them to beg for support.

  • Deploying Jabber guest

    Hi All,
Just i want to confirm, should jabber requires separate vm, will jabber guest works on IM&Presence server...is there any integration required

Jabber Guest is its own virtual machine and requires dedicated Expressway C/E virtual machines separate from MRA for time being.

  • Customize Jabber Guest

Is it possible to customize Jabber Guest in any way?  One thing in particular I'm looking to do is enable a way for users to enter their name prior to joining a call so that multiple Jabber Guest users can be distinguished in a call.  Is that possible with Jabber Guest or do I need to use Jabber SDK?
    Thanks, Mike

    Hi Mike,
This would require some custom development using the Jabber Guest API.  At a high level, when the user enters their name, you would use that information to create a link on-the-fly using the Jabber Guest API (populating Caller Name with the name they entered), and then load their special link so they can click on it and start the call.
For more information on the Jabber Guest API look here:  https://developer.cisco.com/site/jabber-guestsdk/documents/guest-server-api/
We also have some sample code which shows how you might do this on the web client, at link above, go to drop-down menu Downloads | Jabber Guest SDK for Web demo.
Similar approach would work for mobile clients as well.

  • Jabber Guest RMS Licensing

    Hey all,
So we ordered a new Expressway C & E along with a Jabber Guest "Right to Use".  We did not purchase any RMS licenses though because we have CUWP licensing.  How do I get RMS licenses from our CUWP licenses, as it shows they are included with CUWP.
    Thanks,
    Justin

    Hi Justin,
I am not intimately familiar with ordering through CUWP, but I do know that you are entitled to 10 RMS licenses per 50 users.  I believe you add them through the PUT, with the part number: LIC-EXP-10RMS-CPW=
    I hope this helps.
