Jagged edge of Smart Object in PS CC. Anti-alias is disabled.

I created a rectangle shape in PS and make it as Smart Object. I get jagged edged Smart Object when I do rotate, skew or perspective it.
Someone suggested that turning on the anti-alias feature in the option bar would solve this issue. However, When I do free transform Smart Object, the anti-alias feature is diabled.
Has anyone experienced this kind of issue and found the solution?
Thanks

Thanks for the help. Your suggestion would be work when I use shapes in Smart Object, however, what I am trying to do is to create a shape or any object and make it Smart Object as a container. Objects in Smart Object can be anything.
Image Interpolation setting in PS Preference is Bicubic. I tried with Bicubic automatic but I had a same result. Also I tried with raster graphics, but it still seemed jagged.
The line looks Jagged
Here's another example.
Can anyone help with this?
Thanks!

  • Jagged edge of Smart Objects in Photoshop CS4!

Vector graphics created in Illustrator CS4 and pasted as Smart Objects into Photoshop CS4 used to appear perfectly smooth. This has stopped. I now get very jagged edged Smart Objects which are quite useless. I have checked all the Edit preferences and made sure Anti Alias is turned on in the Illustrator files to no effect. What can be done about this? What has suddenly changed and why? Would uninstalling & reinstalling CS4 solve this problem? Has anyone else experienced this and found the solution?

    Hi OldBob1957,
Thanks for your helpful suggestion and the links which I've noted for future
    reference.
However, I think the problem is solved and I'm indebted to Chris Cox of
    Photoshop Family for
No idea. The only time I saw this happen was when someone mistakenly turned
    off the antialias
feature when placing the smart object. (which is why I put the antialias
    checkbox in the transform
toolbar to make it more visible in later releases)
And of course when I checked I had done exactly that and been struggling for
    weeks!
    Now unblinkered.

  • Smart Object Selection

Why does making a selection inside of a smart object (say with the rectangular marquis tool) disable Free Transform?

There seems to be an inconsistency in the interface because when other targets which can only be entirely transformed are accompanied by a selection, there is no prevention of Free Transform. Even a pair of SO can be transformed when there is a selection.

  • "Anti-alias" greyed out when free-transforming smart objects.

While resizing smart objects, I noticed that the anti-aliasing was  very contrasting and not smooth enough for my purposes. I realized that  if I rasterized the smart object before resizing, the anti-aliasing was  better. I then noticed that there was a setting when free-transforming  smart objects called "anti-alias." However, I am unable to activate it  as it is greyed out. So, here's two questions:
    1) Is there a way to make the anti-aliasing for smart objects the same as that of rasterized objects?
    2) Is there a way to activate that "anti-alias" setting when free-transforming smart objects?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

On top of what Zeno Bokor wrote that while your doing the transform your viewing a quick scaled preview not the actual transformation you wrote
The SOs I'm talking about are bitmap images I made into SOs to be able to resize and edit without destructive changes, not imported vector graphics from AI.
You did not state how you made the bitmap images  into smart object.   If you just converted a layer you had been working on into a smart object some damage may have already been done to the bitmap image.  You might  get better results if you started out with a smart object layer to begin with by using ACR open as smart object option or by placing your camera jpeg images into your document as starting points.

  • After loading a JPEG file into adobe CC as a smart object and trying to resize image I get big jagged edges around the picture.

Also, the anti-aliasing box isn't checked but is greyed out so I can't check it. How can I fix this issue? Thanks for any help!

Smart object layers transform like pixel layers.  The resize may be using your default interpolation method. If you left it at Adobe default setting  Bicubic Automativ and you are down sizing a sharpen image it may be using Bicubic Sharper. When Bicubic Sharper is used on sharpened image jagged artifacts may happen.  Try changing your Photoshop Interpolation preference to plain bicubic. I'm not a fan of Bicubcr Automatic or Bicubic Sharper.  I will use Bicubic Sharper when I re-size my soft unsharpen images for the web.

  • RAW as Smart Objects - Lock Edge Pixel Opacity During Resize

I'm a professional fine art printer.  I prepare images for large format printing, often starting from the original RAW files.  Since the feature to open RAW files as Smart Objects in Camera Raw was introduced, I've been doing that, as it allows me to go back into the Raw file at anytime and re-tweak as I layer.  I love this option and it is totally indispensable to my workflow.
HOWEVER, I find a serious flaw when resizing the image for final print, or even when resizing for web-output.  If I do any interpolation (pixel resizing) up or down, the edge pixels are not locked in place, and treated as if they are a floating object, therefore the edge pixels usually show up at a lower opacity, (see attached image).  This KILLS my workflow!  It means I have to completely flatten my work and then resize, loosing all my groovy layers and the ability to go back into Camera Raw and make final tweaks while I make test prints and final decisions with the client by my side.
Even worse, when I apply the final print sharpening and flatten the file to send out, the edge transparency issue is compounded, and the sharpening adds an ugly halo around the whole image, BLAH!
What I need is a way for Smart Objects with the exact same pixel dimensions as the file to lock their edge pixels at the current opacity when resizing.  In other words, I need Photoshop to treat the Smart Object as a true Background Layer for certain purposes, while still being able to go back into Camera Raw as I like.  I notice the ability to lock transparency is gone on Smart Objects, which I'm sure is necessary for compositing, but not for what I'm doing at all.
Is there anyway this can be done in the current CS5 or 5.5 (haven't upgraded yet) that I'm simply missing?  Can anyone from Adobe confirm that this is something you'll look into for me?
Thanks so much, absolutely loving Adobe products these days, you guys rock!
    Best,
    -B

I'm not going to say anything about the abysmal rendering of Vector Smart Objects in CS6 because it'll be beating a dead horse but I can explain the issues you see with measurements after scaling.
The slightly disproportionate scaling and half-pixel shift of the centre is unavoidable when it happens because the resulting Smart Object/Vector Smart Object must measure an integer number of pixels in height and width and be perfectly aligned to the document pixel grid. That's true in CS5 and CS6.
Say a SO/VSO originally measures 102 x 103 pixels and you scale it by 50%. The Options bar may say the result is 51 x 51.5 px but the result will really be 51 x 52 px, and therefore the new height will really be 50.49% of the old height.
The original SO/VSO is an even number of pixels wide and an odd number of pixels high, therefore its centre will be halfway down a pixel. The 50%-scaled SO/VSO is an odd number of pixels wide and an even number of pixels high, therefore its centre will be halfway across a pixel.

  • Trasform Distort Creating Jagged Edge

I am trying to use Edit>Transform>Distort to draw a fence in perspective. The result is a visibly jagged edge. (See image below.)
I am starting out with a considerably larger fence picture, in the hope that oversampling would fix this problem, but even that is still giving me a jagged edge.
Is there an easy way to create this effect with smoother edges?
(Possibly worth noting: in the original fence layer, the white areas are transparent, and need to be transparent, as there will be another layer under the fence layer.)

There was a thread a while back regarding Smart Objects that also showed jagged edges after transformation that I can’t locate currently, might have been about CS4 – but if Mr.Cox is looking into it anyway the issue should be in good hands.

  • How to distribute photos on a page when they are all smart objects

    Hi there,
    I have 5 images on a page in 3 columns, 2 each of 2 and 1 of 1
They are all Smart Objects that have been resized and cropped to fit the openings they now occupy.
I've been sizing, aligning and distributing these things by eye but watched the tutorial on how to use the alignment and distribution buttons so thought I'd try that.
Things seem to go ok when aligning edges ...for example if I select the two images in the center column and align their left or right edges that works OK. Similarly I can select the top or bottom edges of the large on in the column of its own on the right and align its top edge with those in the other two columns and ditto for the bottom edge.
When 'distributing' them however, things don't work, The distribution tool seems to be working off the underlying images rather than the visible images which have been resized ...and sometimes changed ...via the 'replace contents' command.
Is there a way to get PSCC 2014, latest build ...to distribute based on what is visible instead of what the underlying image is?
    Thanks,
    jj

Photo Collage Toolkit (Image File are placed in as smart object layers.)
Photoshop scripting is powerful and I believe this package demonstrates this A video showing a 5 image collage PSD template  being populates with images:
The package includes four simple rules to follow when making Photo Collage Template PSD files so they will be compatible with my Photoshop scripts.
Size the photo collage templates for the print size you want - width, height and print DPI resolution.
Photo collage templates must have a Photoshop background layer. The contents of this layer can be anything.
Photo collage templates must have alpha channels named "Image 1", "Image 2", ... "Image n".
Photo collage templates layers above the background layers must provide transparent areas to let the images that will be placed below them show through.
There are twelve scripts in this package they provide the following functions:
TestCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to test a Photo Collage Template while you are making it with Photoshop.
CollageTemplateBuilder.jsx - Can build Templates compatible with this toolkit's scripts.
LayerToAlphaChan.jsx - Used to convert a Prototype Image Layer stack into a template document.
InteractivePopulateCollage.jsx - Used to interactively populate Any Photo Collage template. Offers most user control inserting pictures and text.
ReplaceCollageImage.jsx - use to replace a populated collage image Smart Object layer with an other image correctly resized and positioned.
ChangeTextSize.jsx - This script can be used to change Image stamps text size when the size used by the populating did not work well.
PopulateCollageTemplate.jsx - Used to Automatically populate a Photo Collage template and leave the populated copy open in Photoshop.
BatchOneImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Collage templates that only have one image inserted. The Collage or Image may be stamped with text.
BatchMultiImageCollage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with images in a source image folder. Easier to use than the interactive script. Saved collages can be tweaked.
BatchPicturePackage.jsx - Used to Automatically Batch Populate Any Photo Collage template with an image in a source image folder
PasteImageRoll.jsx - Paste Images into a document to be print on roll paper.
PCTpreferences.jsx - Edit This File to Customize Collage Populating scripts default setting and add your own Layer styles.
    Documentation and Examples
Any size image can be fitted to any image location however it works better when images and image locations have the same orientation. Landscape to Landscape Portrait to portrait.
Note the difference in the populated images here when Image and image location orientations don't match up.

  • Can't get rid of jagged edges of aligned objects

I have the annoying problem of jagged edges on aligned objects in Illustrator. This image demonstrates it well: http://i.imgur.com/AIyK6vK.png
You can see the white background shining through where objects align to each other. I thought this was only a display thing which wouldn't show up on print or export, but I get the same aweful results when exporting to png, pasting as a smart object in PS etc. How do I fix this?
    Thanks!

I've tried that aswell and it looks a bit better, but that isn't always (never?) a good solution.
Jacob, I've had no luck with the other thread, I was already using smart guides. This is a strange problem. I've not seen a lot about this anywhere else, don't you guys have this issue?
There is one better solution than a background layer. Select all objects and offset the path buy a very small number, maybe 0,01 mm but that is also more of a "hack" than a real solution..

  • Smart objects rendering incorrectly

Whenever I paste an object from illustrator as a smart object the edges become jagged and the vector loses it's sharpness. It works fine in CS6 but this hads just started happening in Photoshop CC. I've updated to the current version but it hasn't changed.
Screen shots are below, taken at 100% - you can see that the vectors aren't very sharp

Yeah, all the documents are the same resolution. To highlight the issue I've set up 2 identical documents, one in CC and one in CS6 and pasted in a new vector. You can see this difference between the versions below:

  • Perspective effect with Smart Objects (SO)

    Hi,
i would like to create a perspective efect on smart objects.everything i read so far was that perspective effect doesn't work (distort) on SO.
everybody place the SO almost as they want but to create the perspective effect, they rasterize layer and finish perspective effect using the Free Transform tool.
    1. so is it really the only one way to do it ?
I mean i have a lot of business cards design and i have a master design for their presentation... in this presentation i can change just 1 SO (the master one) and all other SO (representing business cards) are automatically updated...
so it is really great for creating a new presentation of product. owever, if i must rasterize SO i loose this feature/possibility.
    2. So what is the best solution ?
    thx.

    Hi Conroy,
at work we have CS6. I tried all kind of File > Preferences > General > Image interpolation, but nevetherless still the same issue. The bicubic is the best one for card border/edge but they are still to "stairs steps" and not clean line for borders.
    Here is my work.
    A) The top card is former verctor SO, rasterized and once again convert to SO (for later applying effects/filters)
    B) The bottom card is a standard Vector SO with content from a vector tool.
    there are 2 main issues.
    1. the perspective for the card B (vector) is not as perfect as for card A, as if you move individually a corner, other corners move also
how to solve it in order to not have a destructive one ? i mean if i have on 1 artwork 3 visible business cards, i don't want to replace content 3 times + filters, etc.. i would like to maximum replace 3 contents and that's all... imagine if i have 100 business cards ready for that...i will spend months to recreate each perspective and effects.
    2. the 2nd issue is with card edges/borders...they are not anti-aliased at all..maybe the top one (card A) is more than the vector SO as it has been rasterized...but nevertheless it is far from what i see on internet for same work.
so what did i miss ? where is my mistake ?
    thx.

  • Smart objects rotating unexpectedly

    Hi All,
I don't use smart objects very much, so I hope someone will save me the time of learning too quickly...
I have a supplied .psd file which has several faults in method of construction by noobie, but the one throwing me is that two of the 3 or 4 smart objects placed in it are displaying rotated 90 degrees and are scaling to fit the apparent frame.
I believe they showed correctly when I opened the file for a look, but after making a levels adjustment in one of the s/o's, the two changed orientation and refuse to behave now.
I don't recall hearing of this before, is it common?
    PS11.0.1
    OSX 10.5.7
    Intel Duo

No, I don't know anything except that the file was prepared by a noobie who had no idea...
To describe better, it is a front cover all laid out in photoshop with some text on layers and 5 mugshots scattered around the edge of the page, all smart objects and normal portrait orientation.
I opened the file with no warnings except profile, viewed correctly, noted the ugly colour in mugshots, so double clicked on layer to open smart object, which went fine, made tonal adjustments and flattened s/o and closed.  When the parent file updated, that s/o came back rotated 90deg and distorted to fit in the original frame ie squashed!  Not only that, but another s/o had done the same even though I had not opened it!
Quite bizarre, but sometimes these amateurs come up with some strange ways to build a file so anything was possible in the construction.
Also, the text on their laser sample is a serif but it opened on my machine as arial with no warning.  Maybe it is just a busted file!
I don't get a lot of weird things happening, I have a low-spec but very stable system and up to date and I have had plenty of practice, but admittedly not much with smart objects so I am putting it down to a one-off file glitch or something I don't understand with the smarty...

  • Anti-Alias, Smart Objects and Photoshop

I'm using photoshop to create a poster for a client of mine. I placed vector graphics from illustrator into my photoshop document, creating smart objects. As you can see, below, it looks like an Anti-Aliasing issue, where jagged lines are EVERYWHERE.  However, you can also observe that the text (created in photoshop) also appears to be fuzzy/jagged.
This issue can be seen on the print out, as well, so it doesn't appear to be anything in the preview...
The Anti-Aliasing option in the transform toolbar is greyed out for me. I've gone through all the settings and i can't seem to find anything that may do this to my file (and it only seems to be affecting this one file).
Version is as follows: 14.2.1 x64
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

There are no jagged lines in that example - you're just rasterizing at a REALLY low resolution.

  • Vector smart object is rendering poorly.

Has anyone run across an issue when pasting complex Vector Smart Objects into Photoshop CC?
I created a shape in Illustrator CC, added an Extrude and Bevel effect to it, and then pasted it as a smart object in Photoshop CC. The first example what it looks like in Illustrator CC, the second is what it pastes as in Photoshop CC.
As you can see, it is rendering it very poorly and totally unusable as a Smart Object.
I've recently updated to CC, and this never happened in CS5. Is there a new preference in CC that helps render vector objects? maybe something I turned off by accident?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Thanks for the helpful tips.
The screens were taken at 100%, cropped for space and unfortunately optimized as jpegs. But you can see that the after image has lines and jagged edges instead of a smoother gradient and softer edges.
Unfortunately my computer can no longer support 3D since Photoshop CC requires a video card with 512mb of vram. I only have 256mb.
I've tried a few different performance changes in preferences, but nothing stood out as the cause.
The only work around I found was to export from illustrator as a png but that negates the usefullness of smart objects.
    Thanks again,
    Mike

  • Vector shape to smart object, is blurry when scaled

I've recently been upgraded to Photoshop CS5.5 and am having issues with smart objects.
    Quite often I would:
make a shape layer, say a circle
apply a layer style, say a stroke and drop-shadow
    Convert this to a smart-object
Resize this object to whatever I needed and it would scale perfectly, the layer styles and crisp edge would scale.
Now, when I use this same workflow, the whole object becomes blurry - like it's become one giant bitmap instead of retaining its original nature.
The blurred smart object loses it's vector nature and looks horrible, this is surely an error.

It depends on how you scale the smart object layer. If you just use Ctrl+T free transform Photoshop will matieilize the pixels for the layer then resize the materilazed pixel layer like normal raster layer not text not a shape layer. If on the otherhand you double click on the smart object icon in the layer in the layers palette Photoshop will open the smart object in photoshop. If it a RAW file it wil open in ACR. If is is a Photoshop Document like a PSD, Tif, Jpeg etc it will open in Photosgop. If it is some Photoshop object like a layer group a collection of layers an vector shape layer it will open in Phpotoshop.  You can then scale the smart object  with Photoshop tools like ACR or Image size set resample constrain scale layer style etc to scale the smart object when you use save the change Photoshop will update the smaer object layer in the document. You can do the save by clicking the Close icon and respond yes to save.  Scaling the smart object layr this way  will scale text and vectors the way you want them to be scaled.
