Jagged edges on text

My text has jagged edges after I render in FCP 4.5. This also happens when I import files from After Effects and Live Type. I recently lost all of my sequence and render settings, so my thinking is that it's one of those settings. Any ideas?

By default FCP sequences are in the DV codec which looks as if it loses resolution when viewed on a computer monitor. If you're outputting your video to an NTSC monitor via firewire, DV should look fine ... you must be looking in the Canvas.
(DV doesn't really lose much resolution on computers ... if you open a DV video file in Quicktime & go to Movie Properties-->Video Properties, you can select "High Quality." The Powers That Be at Apple so ordained this setup because computers used to have trouble playing back full-resolution video at 29.97 fps ... not really the case nowadays but they keep playing DV at "low quality" by default.)
If you change your sequence codec to Animation it will look sharp & crisp. But be careful, Animation files will eat up space on your scratch disk like CA-RAAAAAAZY. So either you need oodles of space or short animations.

Jagged Edges on Text/Font

Hi,
I am trying to solve an issue with my AE and every time I use the text tool to make titles or just type text, the text is jagged on the edges and isnt sharp at all. The edges look bumpy and yes quality is set to full, this is a new occurrence as I have had AE for a couple of years now. Please respond soon.

The important thing to remember is that the Comp panel is just a preview. A render will never degrade like the comp panel does. The only true test of a project is to watch it playing at speed on the device it intended to be played on. That's the only way to tell. What I mean by that is if you are doing opening credits for a feature film the only way to tell if they are going to match your expectations is to play them on a big screen with a projector that has the same basic characteristics of a cinema projector. Anything else is just an educated guess.

Jagged edges on text when printing from InDesign

When I print text from InDesign, it prints with rough edges. This happens with text created in InDesign or imported from Photoshop. I can export the same image to a PDF though and it prints perfectly from Acrobat.

Well, I'd say that you should just do your printing from Acrobat.
ID is not really all that good at printing direct to a printer, and it won't print properly at all to some common ones (mostly HP and Ricoh, but not all of either). Are you printing for proofs or final output? I strongly advise printing proofs from the same PDF files that you will be sending out, anyway, and PDFs tend to process faster in the printer than native InDesing files, so you often can shorten the time it takes to get output by exporting to PDF, even including the time it takes to export (plus, export is a background task so you can continue to work in ID, but printing direct ties up the application).

Jagged Edges on Text & Shape Layers

Hi there,
I've been experimenting with creating 3D logos, text and shape layers with AE CS6 by using the "shatter" effect. I have noticed that curved letters (like "S") or curved shapes are jagged, even when rendered in full quality (see attached image).
Is this due to a setting in After Effects? How can I smooth this? I have experimented with Ray Trace as an alternative way to extrude, but with only 8GB of RAM I am unable to render out sufficiently high quality 3D text or layers in enough time.

It's a limitation in the technique you are employing. As Rick said, make the text as big as you possibly can, then scale it down again after the effect is applied.

I am getting "Jagged Edges" in .psd/ .jpg/ .tif/ .tga text files
when I edit them in FCP5.1.4.
What is going wrong?
It is getting very frustrating for me at this point.

The usual questions...
Have the clips you're looking at been "fully" rendered?
Are you looking at the computer monitor or an external broadcast monitor?
You can't judge what you've got unless you look at FCP output on a broadcast monitor.

Jagged edges on rotated text in Flash

Does anyone have a good solution for getting rid of jagged edges on rotated text? I have tried the anti-aliasing options but nothing seems to change the jaggedness.
Any advice is apprecitated.

I don't know if this is the problem, but I've seen some display anomalies when using the scroll wheel on the mouse (typically sideways scroll, but it happens with vertical sometimes, too). I know Logitech mice are affected, but I don't believe it's resticted to just the Logitech mice. Im most cases switching to the Hand tool (use the keyboard shortcut Alt/Opt + Spacebar to access it temporarily) and clicking will clear things up again, sometimes for the rest of the editing session. When I see this, though, it affect all pages not just one.
Does the type clear if you restart ID and reopen the file?

what is the resolution of the image? highlight the jpg on the timeline and press option(apple)+9... this will bring up the item properties window... about half way down on the Format page you will see Frame Size... what is it?

How do I get rid of jagged edges in Photoshop?

Can someone tell me how to get rid of jagged edges in Photoshop? I've tried using the refine tool and checking the anti-aliasing/smooth option, but neither appears to work. Here is the problem. I use Photoshop to create the images for heat transfers that I press on to T Shirts. In transparent mode, I cannot see the edges, nor can I see them once the transfer has been printed, but when I press the image on to a T-shirt the edges are extremely jagged. Also, when I add a solid blue background in Photoshop, I can see the edges. I am using the TW Cen MT Condensed Extra Bold font (140.13 pt).
Additional Questions:
Are there fonts that inherently behave this way when stretched?
Are there fonts that hold up more consistently when stretched?
Will rasterizing the image resolve this problem, or at least give me a higher quality image when stretched?
Is there a way of using inches instead of points for font size and if so, where do I change it?
Is there anyone out there who uses Photoshop to create text and images for T-Shirts? If you have the answer to any of my questions, please respond ASAP. It is extremely important that I be able to get consistent results clean, smooth images that transfer well onto fabric. I am attaching my text image on transparent background, as wells as a solid blue background. You may have to zoom in on the gold and black image to see the jagged edges on the fabric.

You have AA set to None in the Options bar is my guess. Use whatever option looks best, but never use None.

When rotating a simple black rectangle, jagged edges are created. How can I fix this? (for web)

I have been messing with a simple black rectangle and when I transform it, jagged edges appear. This is the base for a logo for web. I have anti-alising checked in pref. The logo looks horrible and blurry/jagged on the edges even when previewed on several screens from pc to mac. Any suggestions are welcome!
p.s. this is also happening with text, that has been made an object (top of text seen in the rectangle.)

I don't see anything unusual. That's the best anti-aliasing you can possibly get. Have you seen another black on white hard edge at the same angle that looks better? When comparing raster images make sure you view all of them at screen resolution which is 100% zoom.
Obviously anti-aliasing of horizontal and vertical lines is the best followed by 45° angles and at your angle it is one of the worst because with this angle you have less pixel lines to render it on the pixel grid of the screen. Also the pixels of each monitor screen are different sizes and if you happened to be viewing it on screens with relatively larger pixels the aliasing will be more noticeable.

Pasted Ai graphics (svg) have jagged edges

I am working on an animation in Edge Animate and have been copy and pasting all the assets from Illustrator. I noticed that the result, whether it is in the Edge interface or the published HTML file, has jagged edges. I assumed that they would be smooth since Edge was creating vector files, but that is not the case.

We were able to solve the above issue that Micah was facing with SVG. Posting this here for the benefit of others seeing the same issue.
Description:
In Edge Animate CC there existed a SVG pixilation issue which is observed on browsers when any SVG content is animated with “scale up” transform. To solve this problem in Edge Animate CC 2014 we are scaling up the container div by a factor of 10 (which is by default) and then using image filtering to reduce the resolution based on the inverse scale. Property panel will show this inverse transform scale since that is the transform scale applied to the svg element.
This scale factor can be changed from:
1.      Close Animate
2.      Open the preference folder:
a.      Windows: C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Edge Animate\4.0.0\
b.      Mac: /Users/{username}/Library/Prefrences/Adobe/EdgeAnimate/4.0.0/
3.      Open the AppPrefs.xml file in a text editor.
4.      Search for the Current line in AppPrefs.xml:
<key>SvgAntiScaleFactor</key>
<float>10</float>
Update this to:
<key>SvgAntiScaleFactor</key>
<float>1</float>
5.      Launch Animate
6.      Now try to copy the assets from Ai to Edge and check if you still see the jagged edges. Note: reopening the old composition with the new preference settings will not help. You will need to re-copy the assets with the new preference setting for this to work.

Jagged edges around inserted jpeg images

Hi There
I am using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 in Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
When producing pdf's using Adobe Acrobat Pro 8 with the setting on high quality the images produced have very jagged edges (Jaggies) especially around logo's & imported images, not so much on text.
This has also been reflected in material that has come back from an external print job.
I had this problem on my olf pc & believe the fix for this was located somewhere in the advanced section of properties menu but i have not been able to find it.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It's best to try the smothing. In some cases with smothing on its too extreme and you go from Jaggies to Fuzzy looking Type. Sometimes so bad that its actually looks better with Jaggies, any thing below 8pt should not have font smoothing. In Acroabt it's all or nothing.

Jagged Edges in Encore CS6

Hello All,
I've been working on an edit for several weeks now, and feel like I've exhausted a good amount of the resources I've been able to track down on my own. The edit is a set of training sessions I filmed for a school system in Texas, broken down over 5 days. I've edited each of those sessions independently, then dropped each day onto a timeline in FCPX, which I then exported via the DVD option in the share menu. The original edit was 1080 24p.
I then imported the m2v and AC3 files from that DVD export into Encore CS6, instructing it to do no transcoding. I setup my menus (editing one of the included themes to my liking), and did my export. Upon playback, I found that my menus are incredibly jagged, due mainly to aliasing I'm sure. I managed to get the text to a semi-acceptable state, but the hover icons for the menu options are still stair-stepping badly. My personal thought is that the footage itself is also of poor quality, even for a DVD (it looks fine in the raw m2v files and in the 1080 render), but it'll be suitable for this client's requirements.
Is there any way to get a clean menu system devoid of all these jagged edges? I've adjusted the aspect ratio on the menu files for widescreen, I've tried various fonts, etc.

This is just a GUESS (since I don't use FCP) but do you have a better way to do your downscaling from HidDef to SD to go on a DVD?
I work with AVCHD and downscale to SD, with PPro CS5, and the resulting DVD is better quality than when I used to use a beginning to end SD workflow from an SD tape camera

Jagged edges in video

I just upgreaded to HD - I use Sorenson Squeeze to compress. I DO de-interlace. When compressing to mp4, when someone moves Im getting a jagged line on the subject that is moving. Any suggestions?

Well, DV is lower field first.
But this is normal. When you de-interlace you are left with jagged edges where the individual field lines were. It is most noticeable with graphics/text and fine edges. Trust me I deal with this ALL THE TIME with my clients. They make commercials that are interlaced for broadcast, but almost ALWAYS watch their own material on computers. But they hate interlacing lines AND jagged edges... it is lose/lose.
Anyway your best bet is to use the best quality settings in compressor for de-interlacing. But you'll never get 100% rid of it. Sad fact of interlacing sadly.

Jagged edges using DVCPRO 50

yeesh.
We are capturing footage that was shot at 24 fps, 16:9 anamorphic standard def on an SDX900 camera using on DVCpro tapes, off of an AJSD93 deck over firewire. We capture with the DVCPRO50-NTSC codec, and have tried both 23.98 and 24.
and we are PLAGUED with these frames with horrible jagged edges. This appears to be an interlace/field dominance problem, but uh it was shot progressive. Any of you masters got any ideas?
