Jaguar on Power Mac G3 what to do?

Hello,
I have a nice Power Mac G3 and i would like to install Mac OS 10.2. I have tried to install before but almost everything "unexpectidly quit". I have a cd-rw so i need to install patchburn (unless you have another sugesstion, i do not know what brand the cd-rw is) I will also have to install "wireless card bus" app for my belkin wireless f5d7000 (version 3000). so is there a firmware i need to install before i do anything. I do not have mac os 9 on it. please take me step by step to install 10.2. Thanks!
TheMacGuy 12

step by step to install 10.2
• First, assume that 10.2 hates you, and thinks your dog is ugly, too. It will not be polite or cooperative. If your Mac goes to sleep or you try to install too much at once, or you do not repair permissions often during the update process, it will fail.
• Remove any PCI cards that did not ship in your Mac. Reduce the memory below 192 MB, preferably all Apple original.
• Open the Energy Saver Control Panel and set Sleep to Never.
• Insert the Mac OS X Install CD and click on the Install Mac OS X (or similar) Icon. Your Mac should restart, boot from the CD, and bring up the Install Opening Screen, inviting you to choose English or another language.
At this point, If you need to use Disk Utility, it is available on the Installer Menu. Remember that re-partitioning your Hard Drive will Erase your Hard drive. But partitions can be erased individually using Disk Utility, and some users insist they have better luck installing 10.2 on its own newly-erased partition. It is not proven.
• De-select the extraneous languages and Printer Drivers you do not need, and any Applications you know you will never use. Proceed with the installation.
• After the installed stuff is automatically optimized, your Mac will re-boot from the newly-installed image on the Hard drive. Sometimes it gets lost at this step and has to be led back to re-boot from the newly-installed image on the Hard Drive. It should enter the Set-up program to establish the Owner account and set various parameters. [In 10.3, it did not all fit on one CD, so after your Mac re-boots, there is still more installing to do, and a CD swap is required.]
• Set Energy Saver settings to Sleep Never. You should assume that permissions are corrupted. At your earliest opportunity, run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
• If you want to bring your Mac up to 10.2.8, apply the 10.2.8 Combo update [only] and then Repair Permissions.
• Apply additional updates a few at a time and Repair Permissions after each batch.
• Once you can run the version of Mac OS X 10.2 you desire, you are free to add your removed Hardware back in, and install any additional drivers you may need.
That's my version of what to do. Be sure to read the directions in the read-me files that come with it, too.

  • I have power mac G4.  What do I do to reimage it to improve its functionality?

I have a power mac G4.  How can I reimage it so that I can improve its functionality?

We need more details to provide usable recommendations:
What is the Mac OS version and G4 processor speed (both available from "About this Mac" in the Apple menu. "iOS 4.1" is not a computer operating system)
How much RAM is installed? (Also from "About this Mac.")
Are there specific programs  you use or tasks you perform that are slow? If so, please tell us which ones.
How much free space is on your hard drive? (highlight your hard drive icon on the desktop and do command i from the keyboard. That shows the capacity of the drive and how much space is available)

  • What are the normal operating temps for a G5 Quad Core Power Mac Tower?

I asked this within another thread but I am afraid it will get buried and think it deserves its own item.
I just downloaded Temperature Monitor and have been looking at the data. I have no idea how to interpret the figures and there are no listings of specified upper and lower limits even though there is an area where those numbers should go.
The numbers are constantly in flux, going up and down a degree or two but here is a recent example from a screenshot taken while I was running WORD (but not working on any document), Terminal, Apple Mail, Firefox (two windows open), Temperature Monitor, Preview, Dashboard and Finder:
    Air Tunnel 99.5 degrees F
Air Tunnel Heatsink 92.8 degrees F
    CPU A Core 1 Diode 107.5 degrees F
    CPU A Core 2 Diode 107.8 degrees F
    CPU B Core 1 Diode 108.0 degrees F
    CPU B Core 2 Diode 111.5 degrees F
    Drive Bay 87.8 degrees F
Graphics processor chip 131.0 degrees F
Main Logic Board Air Inlet --- (this is always missing)
Main Logic Board Backside 108.7 degrees F
Memory Controller Diode 133.9 degrees F
    SMART Disk WDC WD2500JS-41M.... 104.0 degrees F.
The icon for the program, in the dock, gives me an ever changing number that is perhaps an overall reading - an average. Right now the number is 106.4 degrees F (taken some minutes after the screenshot providing the above data). Always in flux.
Do any of these temps look alarming? And HOW and WHERE do I find out what the temperatures SHOULD be?
    PS I have APPLE RAM.

If you want to find out whether a sensor value is within normal limits, please select the menu item Window > Show Overview (or press Apple+1) and look for the limits in the third and fourth column of the sensor table. They contain the known official limits Apple has specified for readings acquired at the given sensor locations. If no limit is given in the table, this either means that it does not make sense to specify a limit for this particular sensor (e.g. the battery capacity should not have limits), or Apple hasn't published any specifications for this sensor.
Note that all up-to-date Macintosh models automatically shut down or enter sleep mode if one of the readings exceeds a critical limit. For this reason it is impossible that your computer can be damaged in an overtemperature condition.

The Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, or similar software. For best results, place the second drive inside the computer or in a FireWire enclosure and boot the computer from it before removing the internal drive.

    Hello USME,
'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through  the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire  working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.
    Good luck!... Jon

    Hi GabreilKnight;
You are aware that the PowerMac G5 is no longer being produced hence if you find one it will be on the used market?
For what you are looking at doing I would suggest that you consider a Mac Pro instead.

What can I do to fix an ld Power Mac G4 that gives an I/O error message when trying to access Entourage?

You mean when you try to just start it?
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
