Jaguar to Lep Questions?

I'm looking into buying a iBook G4 to take to college with me..
The one I might be buying only has Jaguar installed, and of course I'd want to update it to the highest possible OSX, I heard the highest OSX is Leopard.
Now will I have to update from Jag to Panther, Pather to Tiger, and then Tiger to Leopard?
Or can I just straight up install Leopard?

Hi! There is a possibility of getting leo on an 800 mhz as I have done it however it's slow and Tiger performs better. Either way you'll want to add the max ram as 296 isn't enough. Tom

  • Ill-advised OS X upgrade...?

Hello, hope I'm posting this in the right area.
I'm running a first revision (pre-April 2004) 1GHz eMac that shipped with Jaguar. My supposedly tech-savvy friend decided to 'help' me in my absence by 1) boosting me up to 512MB RAM using sticks from an old machine of his (which seems to have worked just great), and 2) installing Panther from disks that came with his 2004 iMac. Hmm.
This latter move seems to have caused me some fairly irritating problems: numerous applications (for example iMovie and Classic) now crash with a 'quit unexpectedly' dialogue box during or immediately after launch. In addition, dialogue boxes that pop-up during normal use of several otherwise-running-ok applications - for example in Illustrator and Photoshop, asking if you want to save while closing a file - now crash the applications with the same 'quit unexpectedly' dialogue box appearing. Apart from this pop-ups-causing-immediate-crashes problem, though, most of the software I have still works fine...and many of the new features in Panther do, too.
The problem I have now is that I do not have my original Jaguar disks any longer, so I can't (I don't think?) do what I'd normally do, which is just backup all my software and files, then do a clean re-install of Jaguar.
My question is, I guess, this: can I end the misery by simply going out and buying my own version of Panther (or indeed Jaguar or Tiger), or alternatively, might I need something like DiskWarrior to patch things up from here?
    Thanks for your time!

Thanks very much; looks like sound advice! Thanks for the tips on getting a compatible version too, that's useful. Since you mention Leopard - would that run ok on my system as I outlined it above? Or would I need a massive RAM hike to get it running smoothly? (I'm on 512MB at the moment)
Oh, and I notice that, on the site in the link you posted, they're careful to say that - for example - the 10.4 discs require 10.3, etc etc. Would you advise me to go for 10.3 first, as that's the version I now have problems with, whereas my 10.2 worked ok? Or could I hope straight to a 'legit' version of 10.4 from a stuttering 10.3? Come to think of it, can I even hop straight to a legit 10.3 if I'm now running a dodgy 10.3 which has effectively over-written a legit 10.2 that I no longer have the disks for..?
    Cheers again!

  • Clamshell iBook Won't Boot from Jaguar CD (v10.2.3)

Branching off from a prior thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/13222609#13222609) in which booting from an OS X CD was a potential solution to a problem, the problem encountered with the potential solution warrants its own thread.
My machine is a Clamshell iBook (G3), Revision B (with 64MB base RAM and no FireWire). It was purchased new eleven years ago and later ugpraded to 192MB RAM.
The OS on the hard drive was 9.0.2 until yesterday, when I updated it to 9.1 so I could bring the firmware up to date. I did this before attempting to use the Jaguar CD.
The CD in question is an original Jaguar install CD, version 10.2.3. This is a two-disc set (the discs are labeled 1 and 2) and is a retail version; my iBook was manufactured prior to the release of OS X (non-server) and does not have an OEM OS X disc.
When the iBook attempts to boot from the CD, either by pressing "C" at startup or by running the Installer from OS 9.1, it seems to be loading fine until the following appears:
At this point, the iBook won't load any further and a restart is required.
The iBook does boot an OS X Cheetah (10.0) CD as well as its own restore disc (9.0.2) and the 9.1 disc that came with Cheetah. Unfortunately, Cheetah doesn't seem to have any effect on the battery (this is why I'm booting with an OS X CD; see the posts in the other thread for details). I don't have any other retail CD versions of OS X to try (aside from a Snow Leopard DVD).
Aside from this boot problem and the battery issue (the computer won't recognize the battery and displays an "X" through it even after having charged it with an external charger) the iBook is working perfectly fine.

No. I get the "X" through the battery in the menu bar and no bars, just a plug icon, in the control strip under OS 9.
The battery is a year old and has never been recognized by this computer. I don't have another Clamshell to test it in but did verify that it can charge in a VST charger.
The last time the computer recognized a battery was about 6 years ago when the initial batteries were still in use. Both were completely depleted after my charger shorted out; they didn't charge again after I got a new charger. The batteries were healthy at the time and were able to hold 3-4 hours, which was pretty typical mileage for me on this laptop.

  • I can't open jpgs created in Jaguar on my new MacBook Pro

I just got a new MacBook Pro and now I am having proplems opening my clients jpg files (created on a G3 using Photoshop 5.5 in Jaguar).
Some open fine, some just flash and disapear when I click on the folders containing them, so I can't even open the folders they are in. I tried to use PhotoShop CS3 to open the files, but no luck. They can't even be opened in the finder.
I AM able to open the files on my old G4 with Photoshop CS2 with no problems. It seems to be a OS 10.49 problem or MacBook Pro problem instead of Photoshop because they are not opening in the finder either. I tried resaving the files in PhotoShop CS2 (on my G4) and burning them to a CD to transfer them to the MacBook Pro. Still didn't work.
These files are part of a web job I need to finish soon. I've been braging about how cool my MacBook Pro and the new CS3Dreamweaver is. Do I have to eat my words and go back to using my slow G4?.

Me thinks you have tried to connect to a shortcut folder and not a genuine folder.
Note Mac OS X in Mac OS X 10.4 has 3 popular folder shortcut locations:
The leftmost column of the Finder window.
The horizontal toolbar on the top of the Finder window
The translucent bar which can be anchored on the side or bottom of the screen known as the Dock. These are not true folder locations, but only locations for shortcuts. When you click on a folder for a volume that is not mounted, or is a folder which was deleted it will behave in this fashion. Often if you click on it the right fashion, it will change to a question mark.
In addition if it is an alias to an existing folder that has no contents, it will behave this way from the three shortcut locations.
If you right click instead of the left click a folder, it may think you want to do something to the folder which you can't do. Make sure your mouse button functions properly as a Primary button on Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Keyboard and Mouse.
Also make sure Universal Access is not turned on as it too can cause funny behavior in the mouse click actions, in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Universal Access.

  • Java on Jaguar problems

I've got a 3d modelling program that is written in java and seems to have problems under the JVM on Jaguar (10.2.8 with all updates applied). When opening a new window with controls it sometimes gives me the beachball cursor and never comes back. It does a different thing after saving a file, when the save file box goes away, the original window won't activate.
I've been told by the programs author that these things don't happen on other unix systems or on Macs running Panther or higher.
My question is, if this is a JVM bug, I would download a newer version from Sun, but they don't offer a Mac JVM anymore, I guess because Apple includes it in the OS. Is there no way to upgrade my java machine?
    Kk
    iMac DV+ Sage (named Kermit)   Mac OS X (10.2.x)   192mb, 40gb HD

I don't think "hopelessly obsolete" is a good "excuse".
Java 1.4 is still widely used (as is 1.3) and real-world adoption of Java 5 seems to be quite slow.
Application written for Java 1.4 should run on a compliant JVM no matter how "obsolete" that platform may have become.
Actually, I experienced compatibility issues where older Java apps wouldn't run on newer JRE releases, so upgrading is not always a "silver bullet"... That's why Apple keeps the latest releases of 1.3 AND 1.4 AND 1.5 even on Tiger so applications can request them as needed.
Moreover, even on Tiger with Java 5 installed, Java 1.4 will be the default JRE used unless Java 5 is specifically requested. This is to be changed soon with the upcoming Java 5 update.
For OS 10.2, make sure you have the "1.4.1 Update 1" installed. It's based on 1.4.1_01 as the default JRE on Jaguar, but hopefully some bugs are fixed.

  • Good KVMs + other questions

Ever since Apple started offering up their Intel computers, I've been drooling for one. So I'm gonna bite the bullet and get a Mac Mini Duo (with employee discount from friend woohoo!). I've had a Mac before (iBook G3 with Jaguar and later Panther) but have since given it away as a donation. It got too outdated and someone else could've benefited more than I could from it.
I will have it running on the same keyboard, mouse, speakers, and display as my PC, which is my main machine (mostly for gaming and development work). So what I need is a simple (but quality!) KVM that has 2 USB ports (possibly three, I use my Wacom quite often), an audio in, and a DVI or VGA adapter. Does anyone recommend any particular product? Everything I've been able to find has PS/2 ports everywhere and no audio-in. Preferably inexpensive... $40-50.
And, my other questions... is it possible to install and boot Tiger from an external Firewire drive? The mini comes with a cruddy 5400rpm drive, which I guess could be good for storing music, photos, etc, but completely useless for running an OS and applications on. Is this at all possible, or should I just settle on getting an overpriced 7200rpm laptrop drive and dropping it in the mini then cackle while i throw the 5400rpm off a 22 story apartment building?
What's an inexpensive source for memory that'll fit in the mini? And is there any way you can have them drop one 512 stick in the mini instead of 2x256? Or would this be impossible?
Last one, kind of... how reliable are they? I know they're first-gen, and I generally don't trust first-gen hardware. They've got two beefy Intels in there, so I can imagine heat being an issue - is it? My flat is generally cool or cold. It'll get above 70 in here for maybe one week a year (gotta love San Francisco). Any other issues I should be aware of?
Very last one! Everyone with a Duo, how do you like it? Would you marry it? When I first got my iBook I wanted to marry it, but California state law prohibits it.
Windows XP Pro   Mac Mini Duo to come!!

I use a Belkin KVM switch (Model: F1DL102U). The link below will take you directly to the model I use on Belkin's website:
    http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?MerchantId=&ProductId=164060
I purchased mine at CompUSA for $69.
It is pretty nice. It's got a single button to toggle between two computers. And if one computer is already in use, then it will automatically switch to the other computer when you turn it on.
For example, if I am using my Mac Mini, then the switch will automatically switch-over to the PC when I turn on the PC. Then, when I turn the PC off, the switch will automatically move back to the Mac Mini.
But, I can use the button any time I want to toggle / switch between the 2 computers.
This switch has 2 USB ports, 1 VGA video port, 1 Audio in port, and 1 Audio Out port.
I have found that you can easily share multiple devices on the USB ports.
For example, I have my mouse plugged into my keyboard, and then the keyboard plugged into the first USB port on the Belkin KVM switch. Then, I plug my USB printer into the second USB port on the KVM switch.
So, if you have a keyboard with multiple USB ports, or a USB Hub, then you would be able to share multiple USB devices between both computers.
In my arrangement, I am sharing a keyboard, mouse, and USB printer. Additionally, I have a pair of speakers and a monitor shared between the two systems.
Everything works pretty good, and I don't really have any complaints. I'm actually quite happy with the setup.
I found several places online to purchase it, but purchased it on CompUSA's website. I placed the order online, and picked it up in the store (had my wife stop in on her way home).
I've had mine now for around 6 or 8 months. It's been working good for me.
As for the hard drive, yes OS X Tiger will boot perfectly fine from an External Firewire drive. I ran tests with mine, and found that the External FireWire 7200 R.P.M. Drive did return better performance than my Internal 5400 R.P.M. Drive. However, my external 7200 R.P.M. USB 2.0 hard drive returned significantly worse performance than my internal 5400 R.P.M. Drive.
The best source of memory that I have found is Other World Computing.
    http://www.macsales.com
They have a great price, excellent support, and I have never had a compatibility problem with any module I have purchased from them. I've upgraded several Macs using their memory. Pre-sales, and Post-Sales questions / support is excellent.
It's a great risk-free place to purchase from. Their prices are very close to the bargain prices, but they definitely know Macintosh computers and supply compatible modules.
As for first generation systems, I'm not sure that Apple's First generation is much different from their 3rd. My luck with the different revisions of the iMac G5 were absolutely terrible. The only Mac's to have practically every part die frequently. They weren't able to fix it in 3 revisions. So, I wouldn't expect that you'll see much change in the first 3 revisions of the Intel systems. Best bet is to buy now, or wait until 4th or 5th generation.
It took them 4 tries with the current iMac systems to get it right. The new CoreDuo is experiencing much less trouble than the 3 generations of G5 systems.
So, I'd either take my chances now (if you need the system today), or wait until you see the complaint levels dropping.
Fortunately, the Intel Mini's don't seem to be experiencing the same level of complaints that have come out of other recent Apple systems (MacBook Pro (Intel), iMac G5, PowerBook G4, etc.).
    Hope this helps.

  • Gah! Another Mac -- PC Video Chat question

    Diagnosing the following:
    A = AIM 6.8, Windows XP
    B = iChat 4.0.5 (608)
    C = iChat 4.0.7
    A <--> B no problems video chat
    B <--> C " "
    A <--> C argh!
No connection can be established between A & C. As a quick work-around, C downloaded AIM 6.8 for PC onto a virtual PC (is that what it's called when a Mac runs Windows?). Then, A --> C video & audio, and A <-- C audio only, no video.
A downloaded AIM 5.9. Still no connection established with C.
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

    HI,
EZ Jim (Another Level 4) once ran a Blog on iSight of which I now have a copy and keep somewhat updated.
The Page on this topic is Here
It contains the Quote that is linked to Above (In the "Welcome to Apple Discussions" post)
The whole page dates back to iChat 2 and using AIM 5.5 and AIM 5.9 in some cases.
At one time EZ Jim and I were answering a lot of Posts with "What If your Girlfriend Lives a Long Way Away" sorts of Questions.
This page contains two posts that have been somewhat edited to show Updates.
The first is from EZ Jim and covers all the things that should be done (although somewhat from an iChat 3ish starting point to AIM 5.9(ish) on XP)
The Second post is by another former Regular Poster, James A.Weston who posted on how to allow non Microsoft apps through the then new XP Service Pack 2 Firewall.
It now contains updates to refer to AIM 6.x
I run XP in Boot Camp.
I have a version of AIM for PCs at version 6.1
    For me this works.
For my view point the AIM site then brought out AIM 6.5 next.
In the first link the EZ Jim page contains link to a site that you can download older versions of AIM for the PC from.
I have not tried some of these others.
Some I have not even seen posts here about either so I am not sure all were on General Release.
    The Summary so far is.
Vista can only install an Version of AIM that uses the Real Time Codecs (AIM 6.5 and AIM 6.8 as far as we can tell)
The Real Time Codecs will not allow these versions of AIM to Video chat with Older versions of AIM (5.5 and 5.9 for certain) - or iChat on a Mac or Trillian (An AIM client for PCs) that all use the same or compatible codecs from the AIM 5.5 to AIM 5.9 (iChat 2,3 and 4)
    Other Options.
This pages state a list of apps subdivided into various groups based on function.
    Other Applictaions
The Panel on the left lists the items/apps
The Panel on the right give a bit more info
For Example 1-3 are text based only Third Party IM apps that in some case have Multiple service capabilities
4 Is AIM for Mac on its Own
5 through 8 are other apps that can video and need both ends to get their own Versions (Cross Platform Apps)
9 through 12 are Web browser base sites that do Video Chat by Allowing Flash access to the Camera (It is effectively a Cross Platform Solution)
13 Specifically mentions Trillian as an Alternative to PC users.
I have not heard whether this can be installed on Vista.
Triilian does for PC users what AdiumX and ProteusX do for Macs but does Video chats with the various services as well. (although not cross service chats (MSN to Jabber say) )
14 and 15 are the closest anyone has got to doing Video (No Audio) to an MSN Buddy.
    Summary of Other Options.
It is a question of Cross Platform Apps or Web browser based options.
    (Unfortunately NOT iChat)
In some areas of this I do not yet have complete info about things like Trillian on Vista for example.
    Notes.
My G4/1Ghz Dual processor was bought in 2001 an came with Jaguar and OS 9 Installed.
It is currently running Leopard at 10.5.6
It will and does run PhotoShop CS.
This length of life it not likely to be found on PCs and therefore AIM may not have any real plans to get AIM 6.8+ to work with the Older versions of AIM, despite what the "What do I need for Real Time" message says.
So, Yes, I have some Info on this.
I hope this summary of what it contains helps

  • Is the jaguar gain worth switching to (from 10.4.10) ?

from all, that all of you in the brave new the jaguar world, have now experienced, do you recommend that this 10.4.10 questioner should make the jump ?
is there enough gain to offset the pain ?
would you do it again if you could go back ?

By "Jaguar", do you mean "Leopard"?
Since you have a PowerPC Mac, the key things you gain are Time Machine, a new version of Mail, and Spaces.
Here's a list of all the primary (visible) new features as presented by Apple (ignore Boot Camp).
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/
Tiger still gives you the latest version of Safari (same as Leopard) and just about every newly released software works under Tiger. Tiger also provides the Classic environment; it's gone in Leopard. So if running Mac OS 9 apps is important, stick with Tiger.
Leopard is optimized for Intel. Tiger is optimized for PowerPC. So Tiger will run somewhat more efficiently on a PowerPC Mac than Leopard, given the same hardware config.

  • Ichat and other apps doesnt launch in jaguar 10.2.8

hi, I'll just keep it plain and simple ichat doesnt launch, address book doesnt launch, sherlock doesnt launch and ical doesnt lanch. i'm going crazy over here!!!!! heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeellllp!!!!

    Hello daniel,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I do not use Jaguar (Mac OS X 10.2.x), but you may have font, app software, or OS problems. That is what I would suspect if I your symptoms were on my Macs that use Panther (Mac OS X 10.3.9) and Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4.2).
Do you do regular Mac OS X Maintenance? Have you moved, renamed, or deleted any files or folders that are not inside your Home Folder? Has someone else had access to your Mac?
If you do not get better help here, you might be better served searching the FAQs and threads in the Mac OS X v10.3 and earlier section of Mac OS X Discussions. A search for "app does not launch" (without the quotation marks) there gave a large list of links that may give you some ideas. If not, post your question there.
If you want to try something on your own first, I would suggest you start with
]Isolating issues in Mac OS X and then
]Using Disk Utility and fsck for file system maintenance in Mac OS X
If you shut down your OS X Mac overnight or allow it to "sleep", you may need to manually force the Chrons (chronological maintenance functions.) See Mac OS X: How to force background maintenance tasks (logs and temporary items) .

  • Many questions

    Hello everyone,
Last week I purchased a second hand iMac G3 and I liked it so much that I decided to upgrade it the other day. It was too impulsive of me really because there were a lot of things I hadn't thought of. I installed a 80 gigabyte hard drive in it and gave the 20 gigabyte away. Unfortunately, my iMac came without the original software so right now I'm stuck and I can't do anything with it since it doesn't have an OS. My question is, if I buy a copy of Jaguar (or any other Mac OS on CD-rom) and boot up with the C-key, will I be able to use it again?
I would also like to know if all slot in drives are compatible with the iMac, since I would like to replace the current CD-drive with a DVD-writer. I read something about patching your DVD-drive but let's say you switch hard drives again then the DVD-writer won't work anymore right? Since the hard drive the patch was on is removed? So if I buy a DVD-drive right now and try to install Tiger (on DVD) the DVD-drive I assume it won't work because it's not patched? And I can't patch it because I have no OS so I can't do anything which makes the drive worthless.
Also if I purchase an AirPort card for my iMac, will it only work with an AirPort router? Or does it also work with other wireless systems? And do other wireless USB adapter work on my iMac as well?
I'm sorry if this was all a little confusing, I did my best to explain everything as clear as possible for English is not my firs language. If anyone could answer my questions I would be very grateful.
    Thank you,
    Sekihara Senya

Hi Sekihara and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
.. Unfortunately, my iMac came without the original software so right now I'm stuck and I can't do anything with it since it doesn't have an OS. My question is, if I buy a copy of Jaguar (or any other Mac OS on CD-rom) and boot up with the C-key, will I be able to use it again?
Yes if the CD-ROM drive is ok. I prefer Panther or Tiger however. I'd also up the RAM to 768. 512 will work but be a little slow.
Personally I'd go for a FireWire external drive since the slot in drives are rare and often not working. Also you might not need a driver. I have two externals CD/DVD players and 3 external hard drives, none require a driver in 10.3.x or 10.4.x.
Also if I purchase an AirPort card for my iMac, will it only work with an AirPort router? Or does it also work with other wireless systems?
In my experience they work with all makes. I have had trouble with Belden but that was a while ago and OS 9.
And do other wireless USB adapter work on my iMac as well?
It used to be they didn't work with Macs but people are reporting success with the newer ones. Also they are a lot cheaper compared to the Airport cards which still command a decent price and also require an adapter to mount in your iMac. These are rare and often expensive.

  • Library Corruption Jaguar on iMac

I am attempting to "fix" a corrupted Jaguar installation on an iMac where nearly all of the user library files were somehow moved from the user/library/ path to a user/documents/library/ path a couple of months ago. The user has absolutely NO IDEA how it happened, and I take her word for it because my 77 year-old mother would not lie to me.
MY QUESTION: anybody have any idea of WHY this happened? She does NOT load any software on her computer, I do all that for her and I stopped all automatic updates to try to prevent this kind of thing from happening. She has been limping along since mid-December waiting for me to make a "house call" and work on this problem.
The symtoms she described to me over the phone when it happened were the dock reset from the right side of the screen where I moved it to the default bottom, and the set of icon in the dock reset; the mail program required her to enter her userID and password EVERY TIME; firefox lost all the preferences including the link to the local homepage; address book lost all information; etc. AT the time, NONE of the symtoms made a **** bit of sense, but CLEARLY what happened was the library directory path became totally corrupted, so I am seeking any thoughts or hints as to WHY that occured. There is only ONE user account setup on this computer.
So far I have managed to move most of the files back to the correct path, and am carefully looking at the rest of them one at a time to see if I am losing any critical data which will kill any of the programs, or lose the keychain data.
It is clear to me WHAT needs to be done to "fix" the mystery file relocation, but I am concerned as to WHY it happened since I am a full-time job with NO freedom to just pack up on a whim and take a three hour drive away to troubleshoot this kind of nonsense.
OH, and thank you to the technical support at SBC-YAHOO who talked her through getting her emailid and password re-entered. Nice to see that you are FINALLY getting some non-MS knowledge.

  • OS 9 driver question

Got my 9.1 CD from Apple Rescue. Trying to install, I'm unable to select a destination drive and the message that appears is: "A valid destination volume can't be found. To continue the installation, mount a valid volume for software installation."
In viewing some past postings, it appears I don't have the OS 9 Driver installed so I have to erase my drive using the disc drive utility, making sure to select OS 9 Drivers and then install 10.2 and then 9.1 and its updates.
If I were to install 9.1 and updates first and then 10.2, does that provide the drivers necessary to run Classic, or should I just go with the above procedure?
    Thanks,

Just booted into Jaguar, and you are right. It's not that easy to find out. Here's what I tried:
Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
    Select HDD (manufacturer ID)
    Select Partition tab
Under Options Install Mac OS 9 Disk Drivers is greyed out but checked.
Now to the install beginning with OS 9.
This process will completely erase everything on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure to Backup your User Folder and all third party apps you can't afford to lose
    1. Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
    2. Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
    2. Reinstall OS 9
    3. Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
    4. Update your firmware
    5. Boot from the 10.2.x install CD 1
    6. Go to Installer Menu and open Disk Utility
    7. Install Mac OS X 10.2.x
    8. Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
    10. Download and apply the Mac OS X Update Combo 10.2.8
    11. Restart and Repair permissions!
    12. Run Software Update and apply all updates available
    13. Repair Disk Permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
Please post back with further questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Installing OS tiger vs jaguar

I have a bit of an odd question. My iBook G3 dual usb had a massive hard drive failure. I am needing a new hard drive. Once it's installed, is there a reason I can't install OS Tiger on it with a clean retail version? This OS says it requires a DVD to install, as does Panther, and my iBook only has a cd drive in it. If I can't install Tiger, I will need a copy of Jaguar.
If Jaguar is the OS to install, anyone know where I might find one?

    Hi Again PFMbyNight!
I also responded in your Other Thread.
My reply is mostly repetitious of the great advice already posted here, but you may find some additional info in My Post.
    Good Luck!
EDIT: How did you install Tiger, without the Install DVD?

  • I am purchasing an iMac G3. I know that it is running on OS 8.6. I have found the old Mac OS X Jaguar (10.2), if I purchase the software, will I need any more requirements?

I will be purchasing an iMac G3 this week. I already know that it is currently running on OS 8.6. I found the old OS X Jaguar (10.2), I was wondering can I just install the discs, or do I need any more requirements?? Please help me.

The market value of those old iMacs is very low now, so I hope that you aren't paying any more than $30 for one.  What model are you purchasing - the original with a tray-loading optical drive or the newer style with a slot-loading drive?  If the latter, which model (processor speed) is it?  You shouldn't buy one manufactured before built-in FireWire became standard, because you'll want a faster bus for external peripherals.  The built-in USB ports are limited to USB 1.1 speed, which is quite slow for an external CD/DVD burner or hard drive.  Before installing OS X, a tray-loading iMac should have firmware version 1.2 and a slot-loading iMac should have version 4.1.9.  Additionally, the iMac should have adequate available storage capacity on the hard drive, as well as adequate installed memory.  The OS 10.2.x (Jaguar) installer disk should be a retail (universal installer) disk, and not another Mac's Restore disk.  One other point to mention concerns the hours of useage that the iMac has had.  High-mileage iMacs often have problems with the P-A-V (Power/Analog/Video) board failing, which renders the computer useless.  Replacement is a job for an experienced tech, because of the high-voltage shock hazard involved.  Additionally, new P-A-V boards aren't available and used ones have questionable remaining service life.  Just keep this in mind.
