Jammed after start up - login items load, but desktop is unresponsive

When I start up my iMac, everything seems to load up, start up items load, but the desktop is totally unresponsive. Apps will not run, windows will not open, close, resize or move, menu does not respond. All I have is a frozen screen, nothing responds except the mouse cursor.
Whilst the desktop is unresponsive, the Activity Monitor icon in the Dock shows sporadic activity and there is disk noise from the boot drive, indicating it is doing something.
I have tried:
- resetting the PRAM - no effect, unresponsive desktop as before
- restarting in Safe Mode & preventing start up items from loading - no effect, unresponsive desktop as before
- starting up from my backup clone external hard disk ( made using SuperDuper) - starts up to the backup disk's desktop, then jams as before
- starting up using the Recovery Partition, (10.8.2) created when I first installed 10.8 - jams on OSX Utilities screen, no options are selectable
- starting up using an install disc that  I made on a USB stick (10.8.2)  - jams on OSX Utilities screen, no options are selectable
The problem started soon after I updated Safari & iTunes to the most recent versions yesterday 23 October 2013

OK, I've answered my own question and now I feel really stupid not spotting the problem myself before asking for help.
Answer: - the left button of my mouse (Logitech Perfomance MX) has stopped working !
Hence, no response when I clicked or dragged. Everthing works fine with a different mouse, or after remapping "left click" to the right button of the Logitech. Interesting on how even the OSX Utilities screen and the Hardware Test rely on a (working) mouse to operate.
Apologies for wasting people's time.

Thank you, I had forgotten about target mode. I was able to back up all of my files. I also copied some additional 50 GB of files of the disk as a stress test and the hard drive worked fine and quick (and because it was quicker than retrieving the same files from a network drive to my desktop).
I was hoping to also unpack the Applejack files on my desktop and put them back so I could run them in single user mode without running /etc/rc. However I haven't been able to get my Linux desktop to mount the iBook in Read-Write instead of Read-Only yet (I don't have access to another Mac at the moment).

  • After Effects splash page show loading but won't open

I have been using After Effects 7 for the last year and a half. Today it decided it didn't want to open. The splash page will come up and show everything loading but then the application itself won't open. I used it a couple of days ago and it was fine, so I don't know what I am doing wrong.

Your prefs got hosed. Yeah, it sucks, but deleting them should revive your AE. Stop by at
    Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\Adobe\After Effects\7.0
Application Data is by default an invisible directory, so check your Explorer folder view options first to show you all hidden files.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have tried this on another machine running the same version of Blackboard. It works fine.
Only difference is that the machine that has the JVM crash is running on Fujitsu PrimePower and the OS is Solaris 9 (but twigged for PrimePower).
The one where it runs and starts up successfully is running on SunFire (OS is Solaris 10).
I am wondering if there is a problem with the JVM loading required libraries because of the OS being different versions.
Any leads on this is welcomed. Thank you.

  • After updating to Mavericks imac loads but nothing opens

I have loaded Mavericks and followed the details exactly. Now when I boot up my computer may open fully or only partially. When open clicking on any application or function: eg drive, setup, mail etc. they do not open. Force quit is not available. I have booted up and used the emergency drive and scanned my HD with no errors.I have also reloaded a fresh download with no success, I am now at a loss.
    Les

Both of those need to be removed.
MacKeeper is just plain crap. Avoid at all costs.
Kaspersky is okay (not great), when it comes to detecting Mac malware, but the company has had some issues with their Mac software in the recent past, including one tool that locked people out of their user accounts. I would bet it isn't compatible with Mavericks.
Of course, if you can't actually start up the computer anymore, removing them may be tricky. Try restarting in safe mode. If you can do that, then try uninstalling from there. The disk image file containing the Kaspersky installer also contains an uninstaller... if you no longer have that disk image file, you'll need to re-download Kaspersky. MacKeeper should delete itself when dragged to the trash, but that won't work in safe mode, so I would wait and uninstall MacKeeper once you have restarted normally (if possible).

  • Shut Down/Start Up/ Login Slow

    Hi Folks,
Over the weekend I installed Leopard. My performance seems to be taking a hit.
It takes over a minute to shutdown, over a minute to start up, and almost a minute to login in.
What gives? My "Guest" account takes 10 seconds to shut down and is much faster starting up and logging in.
I've been through the wringer with Tech Support to no avail.
    HELP!
    Thanks.

i had slow logins as well on my macbook. first i disabled all "start at login" items in the accounts preference menu. logged out and back in and it was really fast. so then i started enabling the items i had before one at a time. logging out and back in until i found out if one or more items were causing the slow login times.
for my machine it ended up being "Growl" that was causing the slow login. so i just left that unchecked from within the Growl preference pane. now everything is great. the odd thing is that Growl is still loading at login because it works without me having to start it manually. but i don't have it checked in the preference pane or in the list of start up items in accounts.
    hope this helps! happy thanksgiving.

  • Login Items not launching

I have a strange problem where if I reboot my Mac, any menu bar icons I have launching on startup load. This involves iStat as well as the battery meter. The only icons I get are Airport and Spotlight.
I have checked for the Divxnetwork.prev file as listed at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307000 but I don't have that file.
Any items under Login Items in Accounts do launch, but anything menu bar related doesn't. I've trashed various preference plists such as com.apple.Menuxxx as well as login item plists but still this problem remains.
    Any ideas?

Open SysPrefs > General and unselect the option to "restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps." Then, when you log out make sure and unselect the option to "reopen windows when logging back in." You can quickly do this latter by tapping the space bar.

  • When I get to the login page on my macbook, I type in my password and it starts to load, but then the screen turns blue and it goes back to the login. What should I do?

I was having some problems with my mac, safari and itunes was freezing alot. I have to force shutdown and when I tried to start up again i get to the login page, type in my password and it starts to load, but then the screen turns blue for a few seconds and it goes back to the log in screen. What should I do?
    Please Help!!

    Somewhat similar problem:
Put in the password, hit enter, the screen goes blue for half a second, then goes back to login screen and carries on logging in as usual.  Drives me mad.  It doesn't happen with a fresh Lion installation, nor if booted into safe mode.  On the machine in question it also happens to new user accounts.
I've removed all login items, including Startup Items and Launch Demons (pun intended) and Agents, I've compared system login plists with a fresh Lion installation - can't see differences.  I've removed Little Snitch and PeerGuardian (no more third party kexts).
@Carolyn: I've done disk maintenance with DiskUtility and fsck and even DiskWarrior, cleaned caches, etc. etc.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Sorry for trying to hijack the thread (as it's not about Lion), but it seemed dead anyway.

Iv tryed this numerious times still keeps going back to pasword. Can not get any further. Tried restart holding shift key.. still nothing. What do i do?

    Thank you for your help.
I couldnt get to the hard drive/ desktop. Soft login not even working. So i could not do any of that.
In the end i took it to Apple and its actually the hard drive on its way out. A common issue with that series of Mac. Funny seeing i dont use this mac much. However being 2.5 years old and out of warrently, Apple have recognise this issue with this series/ Model and installing a new hard drive at no cost.
Very luck and greatful. And not feeling so dumb that it was something i did or could troubleshoot myself.
Hope this helps others that it just might be your hard drive failing.

  • 2 login items started after cloning my HD, cannot be turned off

Ok so i copied my HD off onto an external disk, it booted fine, erased the internal drive and copied back (my machine was uber slow and the files had gotten so fragmented it was hindering normal usage and by coping off and back on the files get written together and are not fragmented. it did speed my machine up a lot so that part worked). after that both of the drives would boot and have preview and adobe fireworks open. preview would have a small swatch sample from an iWeb template in it and fireworks just opened. then i tried to erase my user folder and reload it from my TM back up (i didnt use my TM back up because a-i dont have my leo disk on me and b-it took my brother over 12 hours last week to restore from TM so i was skeptical of it)
neither are in log in items under account, i looked in all 3 of the libraries in the preference panes folders, launch agents, launch services, login items. tried looking at the launch processes via terminal and found nothing relating to it. i tried changing the names of the programs and moving them out of my apps folder. tried installing the 10.5.5 combo installer over my current 10.5.5, also ran applejack on the deep auto mode
and i also was able to confuse a tech (not hard) and an expert tech (now i feel accomplished)
i was told "o well then just do an archive and install and dont save the user preferences/folders" then what is the freaking point. they also told me to delete all my log in items that are in my sys prefs but its a system wide issue (made a new user and it happened) and also half of the helpers i have no way of knowing where the heck to look to bring them back in so i just skipped that because im pretty sure it wont do anything.
only thing i havent tried yet has been an SMC reset and pram reset but i doubt that will do anything but im going to give it a whirl for S's and G's
any ideas? its not hindering usability at all its just annoying and shouldnt be happening

  • Items start at login but are not in login items list

items start at login but are not in login items list

That is normal in Lion and Mountain Lion. Those systems try to reopen any apps that were open when you shut down. To stop that from happening, simply uncheck the box in the shut down dialog:

  • When i start my mac all kinds of programs automatically open up but under my login items is nothing

When i start my macbook pro  alot of startup programs appear on my home screen even though under my system preferences in login items there is nothing selected

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you have OS X Mountain Lion or Lion and you turn off your computer with those applications opened, Mac OS X will open them the next time you start Mac OS X. To avoid this, open  > Shut Down and unmark Restore windows when logging back in

  • I have nothing in my login items for my mac, but I still have four apps open up whenever i start the mac. How to solve this problems?

I tried system preference to check my login items. I didnt see anything there. However, I still have my mail, safari, micro office open up whenver I start the mac. Is there a way to solve this? I just switched to mac couple days ago, I dont see why i have this problem.
    Thanks,

If you right click safari in the dock you should get a contextual menu.  What is in the "option"?
Is the "open at login" checked?

  • Losing some Login Items after upgrading to 10.6.7

I'm pretty sure this wasn't happening until after the 10.6.7 update (I installed the Combo version). When I restart, several (actually most) of my Login Items are gone from my Login item list. I went through the process of restoring them all, and they persisted for a couple of restarts, but now it just happened again. Any ideas? I'm going to trash the plist file and start fresh and see if that helps.

Which startup items? Are they all compatible with 10.6.7? If any are also in the Dock, right click on the application/Options - select "Open at Login."
