January Photo Challenge - "Snow & Ice"

Well, in my time zone, it's now 2006. The first challenge of the new year is now posted at http://www.colinwalls.com/challenge - thanks to Gordon McGilvray for suggesting the theme.
Please come up with some suggestions for more themes for the months to come, including a starter picture. We have "Water" for February [which 2 people independently proposed]. I look forward to more ...
May I take this opportunity to wish all participants and viewers of the Photo Challenge all the best for 2006!

Bob,
Yes, here it is January 12th in Denver, Colorado and we have yet to have
a drop of snow since before Christmas (we had record breaking temps the
day of and day after Christmas, I believe). The mountains are getting
dumped on, but I'm too far away to get any good shots of them, and I'm
not so keen on dragging the kids out with me...
In fact, yesterday we walked to the park in light coats - the upper 50s,
maybe even low 60s (that's farenheit, btw :) ).
I'm afraid I'm going to have to submit some pictures from a blizzard a
couple of years ago... (The snow was almost as deep as my daughter was
tall at that time).

When I send an email via MACMAIL  with a photo from snow leopard to  an email of a lion user using At & T , the photo shows up in the Lion user email sideways. When they email it back it returns to correct position. Is there something in Lion causing this? This also happens when in in using iphoto'11 i share/email a photo to myself and the phot shows up sideways but is in a correct position prior to emailing.

I recently tried sending myself an email through Thunderbird to another email account to see if that was the case, but the email came in with a font so tiny that it was unreadable. I had chosen a font type and size (arial 10) and just coming into my outlook inbox was virtually unreadable.
And referring to the person I work with, she doesn't have problems getting anyone else's emails, just ones I send from Thunderbird.

I backed up 6000+ photos from Snow Leopard iMac v.10.6.7 to new Western Digital "My book" successfully, I think! But when I attempted to COPY my photos to it in order to free up space on my HD, I made a mistake. When I dragged the iPhoto (11) Library to My Book and re-named it to "iPhoto Library.old" nothing happened. So I dragged it again, re-named it again (same name--that was the mistake, I guess!) and then it took about an hour+ to do its thing. When finished and I launched iPhoto by holding down the Option key, the dialog window listed two libraries: "iPhoto Library.old" and iPhoto Library.old (default)". So now what? It seems that I still have the originals when I open iPhoto, and do I have two copies, also? Should I delete one of them and if so, which one and how? Or should I eliminate both of them and start over again? And if so, how do I do that? Right now, neither my HD nor the My Book have changed the number of GB available or free since before I began this process. Will the numbers only change after I actually delete my original Library AND empty the Trash? I appreciate any light you can throw on this subject for me. I could lug it all to the local Genius Bar, but now I'm afraid to unplug anything for fear I'll lose everything! Thank you, you wonderful, bright people. (An 83-year-old Grandma, trying to keep up a little, at least)

Oh my! Obviously, I don't know what I'm doing. But I do know that my goal was to do both---backup AND free some space. My iMAc is old (2006) and I upgraded it a year or so ago to Snow Leopard. I didn't think I had the capability of backing up without an external drive, but  maybe I do since I upgraded. Do I?
But I bought this My Book mostly for freeing space because I like to make cards in Photoshop and I'm forever running out of space when I get too many layers (don't really know what I'm doing there, either).
Is there some way that I can rectify my mistakes and start all over?
Thank you so much for  beng so prompt with your reply and patient with mine. I tried for so long to see the dialog box with the library listings. When I launched iPhoto, even with holding down the Option key, it kept immediately launching into the full screen. Finally, after an hour of doing it over and over again, it worked when I held the key down for 5 minutes. Then when I was typing my reply, I kept getting a message to "Request Time Out." Didn't know how to do that, so kept hitting the OK button and kept typing for another half minute. Finally, when ready to send, Safari couldn't do it. "Try again" exasperated me until I realized I would have to begin again and use Firefox. When I got there and ready to type, I got the message  that my message had been retrienved and did I want to use it?!!
So your kindness is very much appreciated.

I have a photo of an ice surface and another of a flower. Now I want to create a merged photo with the flower lying under the ice. I understand that I shall use the function "Layer" and have even read in the manual and looked on a video, but that information is not sufficiently detailed for me. I have tried several options, but I come now way. Generally it seems that your information is only for the ones who can, not for the people who can´t although it is we who really need to learn. Please give me a step by step (click by click) information on how I can get the ice above the flower and then make the ice partly transparent so the flower is seen underneath. Please send me an e-mail Erik Solbu [email protected]

Open a new document big enough for your image. Then additional open your ice and flower image as well. Copy each and paste it into your blank document. They will be placed on their own separate layers.
Make sure in your layers panel. (Bottom right) the ice is above the flower, by dragging it in place. In that same layers panel click the ice layer to select in and find the opacity meter above. Drag to the left until you get the effect you desire.

  • Moving photos from Snow Leapord to Leapord

I have a new macbook which is running snow leopard and ilife 11. I recently had to replace the hard drive on my older imac running leopard. I backed up everything from the macbook onto an external hard drive and proceeded to drag it onto the older computer because the migration assistant told me it will not work unless the older imac was upgraded. I really don't want to spend the money to do that right now.
So I started moving all my files back on to my old imac the old fashioned way by using an external hard drive. All went fine, (including all my itunes music), until I got to iphoto. I When I dragged the pictures folder into iphoto I got the message that it would not work on the computer unless the system was upgraded. Is there any way around this?

I'm not sure what you did - but if you are trying to use an iPhoto '11 library with an older version of iPhoto you can not - newer versions will open and convert older versions - you can not go back

  • How can I fix iphoto 08 so it will edit photos with Snow Leopard?

Ever since I upgraded to SL, my iphoto 08 (ver 7.1.5) won't edit photos anymore. I just get the beach ball of death if I try to edit in full screen. I have sent two feedback msgs to Apple but have not received any sort of "fix." Where can I find this info? I have looked and read, and hoped....... HELP! Thanks so much!

    Bak to the main Library:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

There were some excellent images this week and I was so impressed by them all ...
Alex ... Well you excelled with this weeks animation ... good work on reconstructing all the background and nice work on moving the cage to the new backgrounds in No 2 & 3
Alice ... Oh that did make me laugh. You have done well with putting Raffy in the cage ... very neat but he doesn't look too pleased
Anne ... That really has made a super effect ... did you make a gradient and apply it to the cage selection? and I love the fuzzy effect in No 2 that is very different.
Ben ... Very good effect .. how much of it is real and how much is photoshopped ?
Bill ... Like the way you have gilded the cage and the open door is a real master stroke. Very well done ... cool background too :)
Bob ... Very nice work on the cage in No 1 ... how did you do that ... it looks almost as though it is drawn. Certainly a good effect! and such a different image you have created in No 2 ... good use of the original image :) ... but No 3 has to be my favourite as it is such an original image and beautifully done !
Brian ... Now that is different ... clever idea, it is topical and funny :)
Butch ... Nice work on the underwater scene. Its a neat idea and you have done it really well! Nice touch with the bubbles ... how did you do those ?
Carol ... Oh now that is effective ... nice simple lines and beautifully done. Good work on the reflection!
Dave .. Cool use of colour and clever idea with the newspapers. Its very well done and amusing.
Donald ... Wow that is vibrant ... it looks amazing. Well done.
Elissa ... I really like the way you have kept the perspective of the original image ... its well done and makes it into a striking image.
Garry ... I have been looking at your entry for a while now and just can't work out how you have done it ... I can see motion blur in the background but how did you do the rest of it :)
Jaye ... Nice strong vibrant colours and the silhouettes are a great touch. I like it very much :)
Jodi ... Oh well your No 1 is beautiful ... the soft gentle colours are perfect for the image. I really like the open door and the footsteps leading away ... nice touch with the cross on the top :) No 2 is also good beautiful work on the seascape and those bubbles ... how did you do them ??
Juergen ... Good work on the selection its very crisp ... and what a background you made for it ... very nice indeed.
Karen ... Oh that is fun. I just love all the little touches ... the pigs, the wolf, the butterflies and that sky. Well done!!
Kevin ... Your image has an almost surreal quality about it .. it is good but I keep expecting the water to come gushing out ... Neat idea :)
Linda ... What a great pencil sketch .. how did you get that effect. It is so realistic .. nice page curl too.
Malcolm ... Really good work on your selection and I like the way you have used the gradient behind ... it makes it look like light is shinning out through the cage ..
Marilyn ... All of your images are really good this week. I really like the use of the multi coloured effects in No 1. No 2 is amazing .. that dark background throws the cage into the spotlight and I do like the contrast of the bird, the soft feathers and the leaves ... well done. Love the fantasy in No 3 .. it all works so well
Marylou ... Nice textures you have introduced into your image and a good little touch with the foreground grass. How did you do No 2 ... it very effective and complex.
Nancy ... Oh that is cute using cats in the windows :)The cage itself looks sort of sketched and I would love to know how you did it.
PatB ... The budgies look as if they are watching the cat very closely indeed ... its really effective and tells it own little story !
PatC ... What a good idea in No 1 ... it makes a really nice Christmas scene and nice work on that snow !! ... and good snowglobe in No 2.
Pauline ... Nice work on on the insertion in No 1, good attention to detail ... it must have taken you a while to do that. No 2 has a great distortion of the reflection ... its really effective !
Rita ... Oh I like the black & white look .. it has an almost japanese look. The trees pull your eye straight into the image ... I think that it is great !! ... and what a different feel you did in No 2 ... a much more soft and gentle look. Great gold on the cage ... how did you do that??
Robin ... OK I give up ... how did you do that superb background ?? ... Wow it looks just so good!!
Tab ... Clever theme and I love the way you have done it ...
Terry ... Nice use of the image in No 1 ... it has a wonderful painted look and I would really like to know how you did it ?? The windows look as though they are really lit up ... it is so good!!. ... and No 2 is so funny ... as soon as I saw the cat's paw I started to laugh. Good idea and so nicely done !! Great flames in No 3 and a really interesting pattern in No 4
Tom ... Nice work on your image. I especially like the gradient effect on the cage ... and so glad to find your trademark apple !!
Tony ... A nice fun theme ... well thought out and really well done. It just looks as though he is standing inside that cage... well done!!
Ward ... Well that a first ... a brick cage. Nice idea ... it looks good .. so how did you do it? I always look forward to your second image and this one did not disappoint me ... its a really good abstract use of the image with some great colour changes in there.

For those that have been doing my challenge for a very long time it comes as
no surprise that the challenge at this time of year is to create a card for
the season. While I have picked three ways of celebrating you are certainly
not restricted to these events. If you are a Wicca there is Saxons and if
you are Islamic Id al-Adha is approaching. What no religion? Well Robbie
Burns day and Chinese new years are all not to far off. Just have fun
making a card to celebrate some event they you feel strongly about.

Well this is a special Challenge and I have to say that I enjoyed all of the entries very much:
Ben ... Your No 1 is a wonderful sentiment and reminds us what its all about :) No 2 just made me laugh ... its clever, funnyy and very well done.
Bob ... What a special message and I love the way you have used clouds a gradient to do the image
Brian ... Great background and what an original tree ... very nice !!
Butch ... That has a lovely magic feeling to it and what a delightful snow angel ... well done.
Chris ... OK how did you do that. I think I can see a little posterize in there ... it really does look good and I would love to know how you did it !
Grant .. That is just beautiful ... it looks as if it is carved into paper.
Jodi ... What a delightful image the whole thing is just delightful ... and they are so so very cute. Make you want to pick them up and give then a hug :)
Karen ... You did a great set of images for your cards and some really nice special effects. My favourite has to be the melting snowman !
Malcolm ... Now that is a great photo and its one of those images that really suits the sepia effect. It makes a great card!
Marilyn ... Wow they are nice. I love that amazing dress in No 1 (neat font too) but No2 just has to be my favourite ... it is so good !
Marylou ... What a nice effect you have achieved with your No 1 image ... how did you do it. I think that I can see some embossing in there but I haven't a clue how you did the rest. Good work! ... and I really like the snowflake effect in No 2.
MikeR ... Now that is an unusual effect for the background, it almost looks like frost on a window .. how did you do it? ... it really adds to the silhouette effect. Well done!
Nancy M ... That is just so cute ... its a delightful subject and you have done it so well.
Pat C ... Great treatment of the image in No 1 .. that background layer just looks like sparkling gold!! Neat edge effect and I do like the use of the lens flares .. they remind me of Christmas lights :) Wow No2 certainly has a great lit up feel to it ... how did you do that one?
Pauline ... Very nice cards indeed ... and such cute snowmen. They are just so good !!
Rita ... What a stylish card. It is good .. how did you get the painted effect?
Robin ... Nice Christmas Tree in No 1 !! How did you make it ... it is really effective and makes a really good card. But No 2 is stunning ... how did you get that embossed background ... its just so good. I like the bells too ... and that layer style you have used on 2006 ... oh that is good.
Tab .. Very original art work in your No 1 and neat animation in No 2
Tawana ... Oh that is so effective, the dark background with the white lettering and snowflakes makes it look very good .. Good work on the reflections ... very realistic !
Terry ... What an elegant card is No 1 ... good use of colour and very well done! ... and so too is No 2. it just looks wonderful ... great image and excellent text and effects. No 3 is stunning ... it makes a great pattern and is perfect for a Christmas Card.
Tom ... A very poignant image ... Maybe one day we will acheive it :)

  • I want to enter ICE numbers that can be seen from the lock screen of my iPhone. Any solutions?

ICE numbers (In Case of Emergency) help first responders make important phone calls on your behalf in the event of an emergency. Typically these are stored as ICE numbers in your contacts, however, your contacts can't be accessed from a lock screen if you have set a password to get into your phone. Any wonderful solutions? I have developed one solution that works: I entered my ICE information into "Notes", and then took a screen shot of the information. Then I mailed it to myself and saved it in my camera roll. Once I selected the "photo" of my ICE information, I saved this as my lock screen photo. Now when anyone turns on my phone, they see my ICE numbers and they do not have access to any other parts of my phone.

Having access to contact numbers stored in a phone without knowing the passcode sort of nullifies part of the reason for the passcode protection in the first place.  However, I do support giving users more freedom, os long as they understand the possible negative consequences.

  • How can I cut/paste/save Desktop Nature Preinstalled Photos

I really like some of the pre-installed photos that exist in System Preferences for Desktop choices...and am trying to figure out if I can save them to iphoto or cut and paste them elsewhere....When I tried, I couldnt figure it out.
basically, when you go to system preferences/desktop&screensaver/desktop and you have all those pictures under apple - from nature to plants to black/white to abstract etc
Is there a way to save them or cut and paste them if I want to use them somewhere else  (such as itunes artwork for example or sende one in an email to somebody)
    Thanks

Thanks...Unfortunately the pics I wanted werent there as I guess they changed the preloaded photos from Snow Leopard to Lion.
From the  SnowLeopard installer I pulled out the Desktop Pictures,

To down load the folder go to the lower right corner>click on the SlowDownload>enter captcha>Return> wait your 30 seconds> go to lower right corner>it is the Slow download link (this is the free link)
You do not have to sign up for anything here for the free ftp service.
Your Lion desktop pics are located  /System/Library/Desktop Pictures
individually or in groups drag the photos you want from the DeskTopPicturesSL you downloaded into the appropriate folder on your Lion.
see if this works for you it as about a 24 minute download YMMV however.
All my old wallpapers came over with the upgrade?

  • Placing photo into a resume template

Hi, been at this for a couple of hours, learning plenty about everything other than what I really want to do:
How do I place a photo into a Pages template? I am using one of the resume templates, have my completed resume and it looks great. Only the photo challenge is stuffing me up.
    Cheers, S.

    Hello ShakuZen,
there are three ways to place an image or other media into a Pages document.
    1) If it is one of Pages own templates and you want to exchange an image, just drag and drop your image from the Finder window over the image in the template, because all images in Pages own templates are placeholders and they are defined for this task.
    2) You can drag and drop images out of some apps like Safari, iPhoto and of course from Finder windows and others into a Pages document.
    3) You can use the menu item "Insert/Choose..." to import images or PDFs etc.
But there is one thing you have to know: if the text cursor is visible somewhere on the page and you are using the "Choose..." function, the image is automatically placed at the cursor position and it is an inline object. So make sure the text cursor is not visible (by clicking outside of all text areas near the page border), if you want a fix positioned image. Of course you can change the positioning mode every time with the wrap inspector.

  • Photo sharing and slideshow

In February I am putting together a giant national meeting with about 20 people being flown in from all over the place. One of the learning and development activities that I am putting together is a scavenger hunt/photo challenge situation. Basically each time they complete a challenge, they have to take a photo. They are in groups of 4 and I am expecting that at least one person in each group will have an iphone.
My thoughts are that one member of the group take the pictures on their phone. When the scavenger hunt ends, we will all be having dinner at our bosses house around the corner. My boss wants there to be a slideshow of all the pictures taken during the scavenger hunt. I found out that my boss has a Samsung TV. My question to you is…what is the best way to do this so it is quick and easy? I will have access to an Ipad if necessary. Also, if I wanted to take pictures with an actual camera, how can we integrate those photos as well?
I think I heard something about a shared album on iphones but I think that is only available if we are on wifi and I don’t know if Chateau Ste. Michelle winery will have wifi (that is where the hunt will be).
I can't spend any money on accesories. The process needs to be free. What are your thoughts?

No, you can't link the photos or it's caption on a photo page. They are created by javascript. The transparent shape is your only option which, as you know is fragile at best.
I would take the time to add the photos to a regular page, size them using the Inspector/Metrics pane to the same size and link them. You'll have a much more stable and cross platform compatible page that way.

    Hi everyone ...
I wrote out some comments the other day and then forgot to post them :(
    So hear they are:
Alex ... Your animation made me laugh. I liked the closing curtains but the vanishing clogs is a great touch. Like the cat you have added into No 2 and also the nude from a previous challenge :)
Anne ... What a great effect on section of the image ... how did you do that ? ... and the child bed in Nos 2 and 3is lovely ! Nice using last weeks challenge through the window.
Ben ... What a good idea turning it into a window, it works well but the stage really amused me that is a clever use of the image.
Bob ... Really nice work on the recreation ... I especially like the new wording! ... and what a clever pun in No 2.
Chris ... Turning a plate into a balloon certainly gets my vote for imagination ... and then it went back into scary again. Wow No 2 is simply brilliant !! ... lovely effect in No 3 and just so cute :)
Dave ... Great tidy up .. well done with that one.
Kev ... Nice work on the cubes in your image .. it give a flavour of Holland !!
Malcome ... It look he ages to work out what you had done ... just goes to show how well you did it.
Marilyn ... Excellent use of the image and what a wonderful scene you turned it into. I love the colours and the whole effect... very nice work
Pauline ... Nice imaginative theme and some excellent little touches. Good work too on the aged image.
Alice ... That Raffy gets everywhere. Hope he enjoyed his party ... you have done it really well !
Red ... Now that is so funny it could have done with a coffee warning !!! ... Great work on it !
Rita ... What a lovely effect ... some great touches in there. My favourite has to be those clogs !!

discouragement often nips it in the bud. Any of us will put out more and
