Japanese IME with non American (- Swiss) Keyboard layout?

Hi, I am trying to use the Japanese IME to type some japanese. However that seems to change the underlying keyboard layout assumed as well - with the IME I now get Z, Y, *, (, ) and other characters when pressing the keys they are normally assigned to on an American keyboard:

which is different from the Swiss layout:

For example, in the Swiss keyboard, the * character is suppsed to be Shift+3, but in the American it's shift 8 and so with the japanese IME on, I only get it that way.
Is there some way to select the keyboard layout used with the Japanese IME? On Windows, this requires a hack (you need to tell the IME which keyboard layout dll to use via the registry), but it is at least possible:

Is there some way to get the Japanese IME on Mac to use the Swiss keyboard layout? I wouldn't bother having to manually recreate it if that was the only option, but tell me where to start.

This issue can occur if the keyboard language has been switched on the remote PC while running a remote desktop session. In the case you would like to switch to a different keyboard
language follow these instructions.
Important:
The remote PC selects the system language of the device running the remote desktop client and not the keyboard language. When switching the keyboard language on your device,
you need to manually switch the keyboard language on the remote PC.
1. Open settings on your device.
2. Tap General and then tap International.
3. Tap Language and select the language running on the remote PC.
4. Open the RD Client and connect to the remote PC and check if the Windows keyboard language matches the language that you selected.

Japanese input with non-English keyboard

I installed a brandnew iMac for my wife. She wanted to have the system in Japanese, however the keyboard layout needs to be Swiss German (where we bought the HW).
Now - when I use Roman fonts in Text Edit etc with the Swiss Input menu, everything is swell. However, when entering Japanese text, the system assumes an English (US?) keyboard layout. Thus z's become y's, all special characters sit elsewhere on the keyboard etc. A royal mess.
Any advice?

Swiss keyboard-layout only french version! Need german version (ö,ä,ü)

Hi folks,
I use a swiss keyboard on my Mac under Bootcamp. Problem, there are two different
layouts here in Switzerland for the same kayboard. One is in french, one is german.
Bootcamp seems to support both of them, but its not true. Both keyboard layouts
are similar. Either layout: "Deutsch > Schweiz (Apple)" or "Französich > Schweiz (Apple)
in both layouts, the key é, è, à still are é, è and à instad of changing to ö, ü, ä.
This is really bad... the programmer should come visit switzerland, and see why this works like that!

I had the exact same problem when using Parallels Desktop. I resolved the problem by downloading and installing "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator 1.4" as source I chose " existing keyboard -> Schweiz(Apple) and did the necessary modifications for ä.ö,ü resp. é,à,è and saved and verified the new keyboard layout.
Then I selected build which created the application to install the new keyboard layout in the system.
Finally I chose my new layout, et voilà ;-) Should work also with bootcamp.

Problem with Mail and customized keyboard layout

I have created a customized keyboard layout in XML, it loads and works perfectly with all applications except Apple Mail. I noticed on a googlegroup that somebody has the same problem. How can I submit this Mail bug to Apple?

download and run Find Any File to search for "Antidote".
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. Any file you find will be in the search results window and can be dragged to the Desktop and then to the Trash bin.

I have just Purchased a Swiss laptop with Swiss keyboard layout, on set up I selected English as language , but had no option to select german keyboard only Uk, now laptop is set up how do I change keyboard back to german

Hello!
Open System Preferences from the  menu.
Then choose the "Language & Text" tab.
Then choose "Input Sources".
If you first check "Swiss German", you will be able to uncheck the UK layout. Or you can keep both and be able to switch rapidly between them if you check "Show Input method in menu bar".

Urgent help - T430s shipped with non-working keyboard

Had a delivery of a T430s today and the keyboard is not functioning. I have to tap several keys such as the enter key many times before it recognises the press. Other key effected are space, A and Delete.
I will telephone Technical Support, any idea on what to say so I have no problems in talking with them?

You did not specify what kind of warranty you have, so I'm assuming you have a depot (ship it back to Lenovo) warranty and want to deal with the issue faster, since if you had on-site it would not be an issue. The keyboard is a FRU (Field Replaceable Unit). Before I upgraded the warranty on my T400 to on-site, I had a keyboard issue. Since the keyboard was a FRU, Lenovo shipped the keyboard directly to me. I then installed the replacement keyboard on the machine.
I know warranties are different depending on what country you are in, so it might be different for you. However, I would try to convince them to send you the keyboard so that you can replace it yourself. You may need to ask them, to ship it to you. Before you ask to replace it yourself, go to this page http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?DocID=UM014541 and download the HMM (Hardware Maintenance Manual) for the T430. Read the part about replacing a keyboard and make sure you are comfortable with the procedure. It is also possible that simply reseating the keyboard connector on your current machine may fix the issue.
Until the part arrives, you should be able to use an external keyboard.
When asking for help, post your question in the forum. Remember to include your system type, model number and OS. Do not post your serial number.

It's very difficult to find a Mac with a non-US keyboard at a US store, but Apple sells Macs with different keyboard layouts at the Apple Online Store if you want to > http://store.apple.com/us/mac/family/macbook-air
You can buy a MacBook Air with a French keyboard at the Apple Online Store, but if you want one with a Swiss keyboard, I recommend you to call the Apple Online Store to see if it's possible in the United States (1-800-MY-APPLE)

MacBook Pro with Swiss keyboard in US Stores

Dear all,
I am looking for a MacBook Pro with a swiss keyboard layout. I know that the Store in Switzerland is selling such laptops, however they don't deliever to US. Since the MBPs are produced at the same location, there is only an Apple "internal"-ordering issue, which needs to be addressed to solve my problem.
Does anyone knows if this is possible? I mean you can order Norwegian keyboards in the US store besides many other layouts.

I don't think there is any way to get that in the US. An alternative would be to use skins or keyboard stickers.

Buy a different keyboard layout

I'm a Swiss guy living in Spain. Now I'd like to get a new MacBook Pro but with Swiss keyboard layout. It looks as if that wouldn't be possible from the shop. In the Spanish shop I can only choose between español and international english and US (I guess). In the Swiss store, I cannot ship to Spain...
So, what can I do?

Sure, that are possibilities but they would or could all get me in problems with customs (or force me to spend a lot more money).
And my next visit home isn't planned so soon
My question rather is wether there's some possibility to get a different keyboard via the apple store.

Bluetooth keyboard layouts

This is really annoying. Although my mother language is Portuguese, for which I have a Portuguese-layout Apple Bluetooth keyboard, I have many emails to which I have to reply and write in English. However, when I select the English language in order to use auto-correct options, spelling, etc., the HARDWARE keyboard layout changes into an English keyboard, and it is completely different from what is indicated in the keys. That is: I have to spend a HUGE amount of time trying to find the proper character.
Worse: you cannot tell the English keyboard to have the layout of a Portuguese keyboard, which would be the way to solve this problem. Therefore, I could write in Portuguese AND in English with the same hardware keyboard layout.
And this is only a matter of software, because if you select the English language you have 12 (twelve!) hardware layouts available, NONE Portuguese, which is spoken, and used, by some 240 million people worldwide.
Please do correct this, with the possible urgency.

By all means send feedback to Apple. I think part of the problem is that Apple considers the US and US International PC layouts to fit the needs of Portuguese users in Brazil and has just neglected the "Portuguese" layout used in Portugal. There is no reason they could not add it to the list. Hopefully more people will raise the issue with them (yours is the only message I have ever seen about it thus far).

When login from Mac OS X with Microsoft Remote Desktop, the keyboard layout is always incorrect on the remote.
The client machine have a built-in keyboard of JIS 106 layout,
and the primary language is set to Japanese.
But on the remote, the keyboard layout is US 101.
So a input of Shift+2 does not result " but @.
I've seen the above behavior on the 3 remote enviornments described the above.
This bug did not occcur with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.1.1, even if the system language is English and keyboard layout is Japanese.

This bug also affects the Canadian English settings. If the client is set to Canadian English with a US keyboard the remote server is setup using a Canadian French keyboard. Using the language selection in the toolbar you can temporarily correct
the problem but the keyboard resets to french at the most inopportune times. The was a problem in the earlier RDP client and was fixed so it's sad to see it reoccur in the new client.

Screen locked with non-English keyboard layout selected

Hello,
I use two keyboard character sets for keyboard. The switch between them is Command-Space.
I also have password requirement for waking up or going from screen saver.
Now if screensaver starts with non-English layout selected, I'm not able to login:
password is not accepted because keyboard layout is not English and switching
to English layout does not work in unlocking window.
Is there any way to change layout while in the unlock window?

Yes you are right, this is not a bug, it's just bad user interface. Just imagine the following scenario...
Writing a paper, switching to Greek to enter a couple of characters and leaving the mac idle for 5 mins.
The lock screen comes up asking for a password, unfortunately the user didn't change the language
before the mac was left idle and there is no option to change the language in the lock screen.
User has to hard reset to access the mac and let's hope that the user was saving his paper frequenlty.
So from a coding point of view this is not a bug, but from a user interface design it is a huge flaw

[LR2 - SOLUTION] Using Lightroom in englsih with a non-english keyboard layout

Hi, Many of us, non native english speaking LR users, are using LT in english on a system having a non-US keyboard layout. The conseqeunce of this is that we can't reach a lot of keyboard shortcuts because LR doesn't offer any interface for configuring them. However, there's a workaround. I'll explain here what I did for the french language but you can apply this to your own language. For the non english languages, the keyboard shortcuts are defined in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Resources\<language>\TranslatedStrings.txt. If you are using LR in english, this file is not used and there's no similar file in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Resources\en. But you can create one containing only the shortcuts that you need. I have created a new TranslatedStrings.txt file containing only the keyboard shortcuts defined for the french version. I did this by copying only the lines containing the following sequences: ....Key=... ....KeyShifted=... ...AgPanel/LeftPanelShortcut... ...AgPanel/RightPanelShortcut... ...MenuShortcut/DecreaseRating= ...MenuShortcut/IncreaseRating= (french users can find this file here: http://www.mainsoft.fr/Files/LR/TranslatedStrings.txt . Copy this file to "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2\Resources\en" and relaunch Lightroom. Now you have the same keyboard shortcuts as when using LR in french. Interestingly enough, if you hit ctrl + < , the LR keyboard shortcut panel is displayed and it shows your new shortcuts. Yes… I would at a minimum contact Apple sales or AppleCare regarding this. You have two options though. You can ask for a new one, given they can't simply swap out a keybaord you need to exchange the whole thing.
Otherwise, you can use it as a bargaining chip and say ask for a free external International English keyboard and a discount on your next Apple Store purchase… for instance.
Regardless, be polite yet firm with them as you did not get what you ordered.

Some applications don't put accents with non-english keyboard layouts

I'm using a Portuguese keyboard with three different macs running Mac OS Tiger 10.4.8/9. Some applications (like Motion 2 and Swift Publishing 2) don't allow writing some accented characters, like (è) or (ê), that are accessed by Shift+normal key, but they do display correctly other accented letters, for instance (é), witch are accessed directly without the Shift key. This happens only in some applications and with a european keyboard layout (I tried it also with the spanish and french keyboards layouts), but not with other applications (it works all right with Word or iPhoto) and the english keyboards.
Any sugestion as how to solve this? If I create the text in some other application and paste it in Motion it works! But it's a drag.
