Japanese iPhone outwith Japan

Hello.
I was wondering about the feasability of bringing an iPhone 5s back from Japan to the UK.
Would everything on the iPhone work as normal? I've heard that Japanese iPhones can only work on 3G and above, sadly I live in rural Scotland and 3G+ is not to be found in my immediate area. Is it true?
Anything else that may cause a problem? Language isn't an issue.
Thank you.

SIM Free does not mean Unlocked. As far as I am aware Unlocked phones are not available in Japan.
ALSO...
It is Prudent to purchase the Phone in the Country it is intended for use in... it will then work as expected.
AND...
iPhone Warranty  >  The warranty is only valid in the country of original purchase... Except for EU Countries...

  • Purchasing an iPhone in Japan

I've recently been accepted to attend school in Japan for about a year (about 10 months). However, being an iPhone user since October, I have become hooked, and won't be able to live without it once I move over there. Since my current iPhone seems to have been well used (the back is cracked + ringer switch is no longer working), a new one will probably be coming in June, and I have little incentive to pay AT&T's international rates for 10 months, I would like to be able to get one while in Japan.
I have a bank account over there, and I'll be receiving a student's visa soon enough; what else would I need? Can I get one at a Japanese Apple Store, or do I go to a SoftBank store? I'll be turning 18 the week I arrive there, but I hear that the legal age is 20 in Japan; will I need any special forms signed by my parents before leaving? Is the iPhone pricing different with SoftBank? Also, after my 10 month stay, I'll need to return to the US; what cancellation fees exist? Finally, what are the monthly rates for the simplest plan available (limited minutes, unlimited data, 200 texts)?

You would have to sell the Japanese phone and buy a UK phone. The Japanese iPhone is carrier locked to Softbank and won't work without a Softbank SIM.

Only the carrier to which the phone is locked can authorize an unlock. None of the Japanese carriers will do that. Sell the phone and buy one that works in Brazil.

  • Japanese iPhone Questions

My wife is moving from Tokyo to the US soon, and her current mobile phone won't work in the US. I've got a few cell phone questions and looking for some advice. She speaks English pretty well, but I figure it'd be easier for her if the new phone she gets were in Japanese.
I suggested getting an iPhone, since I assume she can switch between English and Japanese for the display, menus, etc (since it just has "virtual" keys"). Is this correct? Would it make any difference if she got the iPhone in Japan and brought it here (and change the SIM card to get a US phone number), or if she just bought it in the US? I'm guessing it'd be easier to buy it here, assuming that she can change the language it displays. Is there any unlocking to do for the phone to work in the US and Japan (most of the time, it'll be in the US, except for visits back to Japan once in a while).
Would another phone (from the myriad of phones they have in Japan) work here if she changes the SIM card when she gets here? This is if she prefers a different phone instead of the iPhone.
I've got Verizon now (have used them for many years), but I'm thinking switching to AT&T would be better for this situation, if we get a Japanese phone (so we can switch SIM cards).
    Thanks in advance

I contacted Softbank yesterday about the possibility of using my AT&T iPhone in Japan on their network and simply renting a sim card. Here is the text from their reply. I hope it is helpful.

  • Japanese iPhone sync with old American iPhone

I bought a new iPhone in Okinawa and tried to register it on the Apple website, but it will not let me input a Japanese phone number.  Should I use my old American phone number to sync my phone and keep all my previous iPhone information?

I bought the iPhone in Japan and live here in Okinawa now.  It is linked to a Japanese carrier, but the Apple website to register the phone still won't let me put in an Okinawa phone number.  It says "the phone number must have at least 3 numbers for the area code...7 numbers for the phone number..."

  • Japanese iPhone shows AU and no service

    Hi guys
my friend got a japanese iPhone and he is in China, yesterday his iphone has no service and shows AU in state bar,
it doesnt work now, anybody tells me what should i do?

iPhones from Japan are carrier locked and can not be legitimately unlocked. If your friend is attempting to roam using his Japanese carrier in China, he'll have to address the issue with his carrier. China is a big place... The roaming partner(s) may not have coverage where he is.
If he is trying to use a Chinese carrier on his Japanese phone... he can't do that.

  • Using 3G iphone in Japan

I wonder whether I could use 3G iphone in Japan? I am using it in HK with a 3G supplier. Is it possible for me to use it in Japan?
Is it possible to use the GPRS in japan as well? When I searched Japan map here, all the maps are written in the Traditional Chinese. Will the maps turn to be Japanese while I am using in japan?

The iPhone 3G is now sold in Japan, so yes. Not sure about the map thing.
you need to check with your carrier to see what you need in Japan to ge airtime. Possibly a prepaid sim card or something

  • Mapping problem with Wireless Keyboard and Japanese iPhone

    Hi everyone:
This seems to be a slightly obscure question -- at least, I can't find a ready answer for it with the search terms I've tried, possibly because most people don't use this particular accessory with the iPhone.
I have an iPhone 4 that I bought from and use on Softbank, the carrier in Japan, where I live.  While visiting the United States recently, I bought an Apple Wireless Keyboard from an Apple retailer.   I wanted to carry it with me for use with my iPhone, so I would reliably have a convenient way to access the Internet without being confined to the touchscreen keyboard.  (I live in a rural area where WiFi spots are uncommon, but my iPhone's access to Softbank's data network is fairly good and consistent.)
However, to my frustration, I can't use the keyboard due to a mapping problem.  The Bluetooth connection is fine -- the iPhone can discover the keyboard.  However, the mapping is off: typing "Q" gets me "A," typing "Z" gets me "W", numbers and punctuation are off, etc.  The key point: This is NOT a problem with the International Keyboard settings (under the Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards menu).  I have the Keyboard setting set to QWERTY, which is the layout of the Apple keyboard; I have tried all the other possibilities, just in case.  None of them work.  Setting the Keyboard setting to QWERTY does not make the external QWERTY keyboard map correctly.
The rather ironic addendum is this: While on a recent trip to Tokyo, I visited the Apple store in Shibuya and, after concluding the main business of my visit (discussing my MacBook's battery problems with an English-speaking staffer), I took out my iPhone and keyboard and asked him about my mapping problem.  He started with the Keyboard menu, tried the same things I had tried, realized they weren't working, and puzzled over the problem for a while.  Then he did this: He hit a key combination (I believe) that brought up a menu on the iPhone's screen.  "Ah, there's your problem," he said, and selected a new setting.  The problem was instantly fixed.
To my chagrin, however, I neglected to write down what "Ken" had done to fix the problem.  Argh... I was looking at the iPhone upside-down; I'd already taken up more than half an hour; people were waiting, and I guess, being used to living in the countryside now, that I'm not used to Shibuya crowds any more.  Anyway, I didn't take careful notes or ask him to walk me through it, and now I cannot recall or repeat what he did.  And I still can't use my keyboard!
Any ideas or advice, anyone?  How did "Ken" fix my problem, and how can I repeat it?  Much, much appreciated, in advance.

THAT'S IT.  Sir, you have solved my problem.  Thank you!!
And I feel a little silly; this will doubtless seem to an expert as if it should have been obvious all along.  But isn't that always the way in hindsight?
Here's what happened: The key combination I was trying to remember was "Apple/command + space on the hardware keyboard," as you just said above.  The "menu" it brings up is, apparently, a list of keyboards.  I take it that this list is the same as the list of the "virtual" keyboards on the iPhone?  I have never had more than one external keyboard -- the Apple Wireless -- but I do have several keyboards active virtually, as the iPhone in Japan seems to come with both the "Nihongo Ten-key" and the "Nihongo Romaji" keyboards active, and I added several other languages as well.
When I hit "Apple/command + space," this list comes up on the iPhone's touchscreen.  Highlighted and checked at the top is "English," just as if it had been selected all along.  But nonetheless, when I first turn on and pair my keyboard with the iPhone, I need to perform this key-combination action, as if to "reselect" English, and then the keyboard promptly starts working properly as QWERTY.  I can only assume that one of the others had been default-selected before -- presumably one of the Nihongo ones? -- and that this was causing the interference.
Thank you again!  You have made me and my wireless keyboard very happy.

    Hello Renvin29,
It sounds like you need to disable your iPhone remotely. I'm sorry to hear about your phone! The only way to do this with is Apple services is if you had Find my iPhone enabled. You have 2 options:
You can use this article to put the phone into Lost Mode and preserve your data on it, but prevent access to it:
    iCloud: Use Lost Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2700
Or you can just erase it remotely outright:
    iCloud: Erase your device
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2701
You should also take a look at this article for additional info on what to do about this situation:
If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • Can I use my Verizon iPhone in Japan?

Can I use my Verizon iPhone in Japan?

I just used my iPhone 4S in Tokyo and Kyoto. (June 2013) It works perfectly on their CDMA system there, even though I am an AT&T (GSM) subscriber in the US.
It seems that, unlike the earlier iPhone models, the 4S is both CDMA and GSM compatible.  Be careful though, unless you buy a Data Plan from Verizon before you leave the US, the use of their 3G internet access will be really expensive, if you enable "Data Roaming" while traveling there.  Also check to see if you can purchase an international calling plan that reduces the per-minute rate while traveling in Japan, before you depart.  Do the same for text messaging.

  • Iphone 6 Japan Sim Free

I have reading a lot of things about the sim free japanese iphone but i couldn't get the answer if it will work on Brazil GSM network.
I won't use the iphone with any japanese carrier, i want only to bring it to Brazil and activate with a brazilian GSM network.
Will that be possible or it only works on japanese networks?

  • Japanese iPhone -- US Network?

I have a friend who purchased an iPhone on a military base in Japan. Is it possible to 'jailbreak' it, or do something else so that when she gets back she can use it on one of our American networks?

All Japanesse sold iPhones are carrier locked.  Neither Softbank or au offer unlocking.
Jailbreaking does not remove the carrier lock, regardless, jailbreaking cannot be discussed here.
The only official way to remove the carrier lock is by the carrier.  Sell the iPhone in Japan and purchase one in the US.

  • Japanese iPhone in Germany

    Hey there!
I bought this year an iPhone in Japan, through SoftBank
with a contract. A few weeks ago I moved back to Germany
and tried using a prepaid-card, which didn't work, because
    there's a SIM-Lock blocking it.
One question is, in Germany, usually when you buy a phone
and pay it off immidiately, it is unlocked. Isn't it everywhere
    like that?
And my second question is, is apple able to do something for me?
I called a few days ago in the US, to figure out what I could do,
because I can't use it at all right now.
She told me, I would have to call my old provider, which is SoftBank,
to talk to them. Well, when we bought the phones, I already asked,
how it would work, if I wanna use it in Germany and she said,
that unlocking the phone is illegal at all in Japan.
I know, it's not legal to unlock it, but in Germany when you buy
a phone with a conract, it is unlocked and when you buy pre-paid,
    it is locked.
What can I do? It is a half year old, am I gonna throw it
    away now?

Different countries and different network providers have different laws and policies regarding SIM unlocking.
If your phone is locked to Softbank, only they can unlock it for you, however, according to the document below, Softbank do not offer authorised unlocking:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1937
so it would seem your only option is to sell your current iPhone and buy a new one

  • HT201328 how to unlock Japanese iPhone 4 and iphone 4s?

Currently, the unlocking of Japanese iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s (bought from Softbank) has not supported yet in my country. Can anyone suggest a way to get these phones workable when I go back to my country? I have checked that Softbank - the carrier - does not support authorized unlocking. Maybe Apple can do it?

No. There is no way to legitimately unlock a phone locked to Softbank.
