Japanese kanji keyboard on my new MB?!?!?!?

Just got my custom new aluminum MB in the mail and it's got kanji characters along with English characters on the keyboard and the keyboard is not laid out like a US keyboard. I was assuming it would look like the one pictured at Apple's site! I'm assuming I just need to return this, but is a serious buzzkill. Wanted to know if anyone else experienced this. A search for Japanese keyboard on the new MB forums didn't yield any info, but thought I'd as anyway...

Who shipped you that MB? In the past the only way people who wanted the special JIS Japanese keyboard could get one was to buy the machine in Japan, or buy the keyboard separately and replace the original.

  • Can I use US keyboard as Japanese (jis) keyboard?

    Hi,
I'm new to these forums, and I speak and do business in Japanese. Because of this, I need Japanese input on my MacBook, and I am familiar with the Kotoeri setup in Mac OS X and use it often. However, after living in Japan for several years with an Intel Core2Duo iMac with a Japanese JIS keyboard (US keyboard also with Japanese characters on it), I would like to use my US keyboard built into the MacBook as a JIS keyboard. By this I am asking if it is possible to set up a new keyboard map for the keyboard (so when I press the "a" key for example, the Japanese character "ち" is input).
I would be extremely grateful for any help.
    Thank you,
    Tom

I don't know of any way to make your keyboard pretend it is a full JIS keyboard, but there are two things you can do:
+Use Kotoeri Preferences to switch to Kana Typing (Operation > Input Style) . That means a generates ち
+Use the app Ukelele to create a custom keyboard layout.

  • TS3711 I have changed the keyboard on my iBook G4 (OS 10.5) to a Japanese JIS Keyboard but cannot get the Keyboard Setup Assisstant to run and recognise it.

I have changed the keyboard on my iBook G4 (OS 10.5) to a Japanese JIS Keyboard but cannot get the Keyboard Setup Assistant to run and recognise it. Some symbols don't match. What can I do to get the new keyboard recognised/installed? The keyboard setup assitant looks as if it will open when clicked on but does not.

You may need to reset the pmu.  See this article:

  • Replace Chinese Kanji character with Japanese Kanji and vice versa.

    Hi Everyone,
Maybe this thread is for someone who knows the difference between Chinese Kanji and Japanese Kanji.
So, let me ask you a question.
There are more than two characters in Kanji. Several ones for Chinese and one for Japanese Kanji.
For example, the word body can be written in Kanji as 體 in Chinese way and 体 in Japanese way.
But the meanings are same for these characters. And of course, unicodes for these two ones are different.
So about code, I'm developing a simple software for replacing a certain set of Chinese Kanji characters with Japanese Kanji characters.
Let's say there is a certain string.
string str_sentence=僕の體は大きいです。(Let's just ignore the meaning).
So I want to replace 體 with 体.
    I used below code.
    str_sentence.Replace(體, 体)
    But it didn't work!
MessageBox.Show(str_sentence) showed original sentence without replacing the character!
So I assume that actually, .NET regards these two characters as same ones.
    I tested below code.
    if(體 != 体)
    MessageBox.Show("Different!")
    And it showed the message.
What do you think about this?
    Let me sing you forever

Replace doesn't replace characters 'in-situ'. It returns a new string with the replacement.
    Try str_sentence = str_sentence.Replace(...)
    or var new_sentence = str_sentence.Replace(...)
Strings in C# are immutable and can't be changed.

  • TA25134 Japanese USB keyboard supported?

Just to be clear, I'm not asking about Japanese input or IME. I want to know if Japanese USB keyboards can be used (with the kana / romaji / kanji keys, etc) with Windows 7 and boot camp 2.0. So far I have not been able to use it properly. The "@" symbol (to the right of "P") does not register, and the alphabet switcher (where "~" is on a US keyboard) registers as a backtick ( ` ).
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Nevermind, I found the answer here:

  • How can I get my wireless keyboard and my new magic mouse to enter info into a Christmas list app on iphone 3GS? Do I have to move to another room? I have bluetooth on in my iPhone.

I have wireless keyboard and a new magic mouse. I want to enter data into a Christmas list app on my 3GS iPhone. Too time consuming to just type on iPhone keyboard. How can I get keyboard and mouse to be 'connected' or recognized by my iPhone? I have Bluetooth "on" in my iPhone.

You cannot connect the mouse.  This is not a feature of iphone
You can learn about connecting a keyboard in the manual:

I have problem setting up a new wireless keyboard and my new Mac mini

Same with my new mac mini.
Got it brand new via the online shop.
Happy to start with the new mac i really got dissapointed by the fact that it`s impossible to pair the wireless keyboard unless you first connect a USB keyboard to the mac mini and start the configuration.
    THIS S.U.C.K.S. !!!
No hint at all from apple that you first have to connect the USB keyboard.
I had to borrowed a USB keyboard from my neighbour :-((
After setting things up it was no problem at all to establish the BT connection with the keyboard.
    Works fine now.

  • Why are the keyboard shortcuts for new window and new tab (N) and (W) instead of (W) and (T) when I right-click on bookmarks in my toolbar?

If I right click on a link in a page, the context menu allows me to open a new tab if I hit t on my keyboard and a new window if I hit w. In the bookmarks menu, these shortcuts change to w and n respectively. Hitting t results in deletion of the bookmark. Can this be changed so it is consistent with the in-page context menu?

You can middle-click a link to open the link in a new tab.

  • Question Regarding Function Keys on Japanese Wireless Keyboard

When looking at pictures of Apple's Japanese Wireless Keyboard on the offical store* I noticed something interesting: The 4th function key still has dashboard icon on it.  I know that at least on the English keyboard they replaced this with a key for Lion's Launchpad feature. So I'm wondering is this product image still accurate or not?

Which exactly keyboard you are using, can you provide PN pls?
For latest Ultraslim Plus keyboard you have to install SW and driver and that will put into Systray icon where you can switch it. Like on attached image.

  • Win 7 won't recognize Japanese Apple Keyboard

    Hi
I have installed Windows 7 on my iMac using Bootcamp. As I frequently type in Japanese in my Mac environment I have an Apple Japanese USB Keyboard attached. Windows 7 only recognizes it as a Apple US keyboard. Does anyone know how to change? I have enabled Japanese keyboard in the Win7 language section but there is no choice for an Apple Japanese Keyboard. Does anyone know how to fix this?

I think there is somebody who created a Mac Japanese keyboard layout that you can install in Windows for this purpose, but I can't seem to find the reference any more....

  • How do I get a normal Japanese kana keyboard on iPad?

Japanese people and those who use Japanese to type are probably aware that there are two ways to type Japanese on the computer: rōmaji and kana. I quit using the rōmaji format years ago and switched to kana, on the U.S. keyboard, however.
I recently bought my first iPad, the iPad Air, and quickly set my languages to Japanese and added Japanese kana keyboard.
I tried typing Japanese with this kana keyboard, but when I saw how the keys were lined, I was like, ***!! They are not in the keyboard format I am used to using. Instead, the keys are lined in a chart format, going in phonetic order, which I find very unnatural to use. I want to use a regular kana keyboard—I believe it's called the JIS format or something—on my iPad without buying extra hardware, but there doesn't seem to be a way to enable that in settings. Is there a hack or (free←important!) app that does that, or do I have to complain to Apple and wait?
I am currently using the rōmaji format which I find really annoying to use, especially on touch screen keyboards because I have to tap more and have a greater chance to mistype compared to the kana keyboard to get the same character.
    よろしくお願いします。

Hacks violate the license, so you will need to look for them elsewhere than in Apple's forums.  But you can tell Apple you want this via
    http://www.apple.com/feedback
I don't recall any other postings asking for JIS Kana layout on the screen since iOS was released in 2007, but I could have missed some.
You can of course have this via a JIS bluetooth keyboard.

  • What do I do in Kotoeri to display furigana above Japanese Kanji?

What do I do in Kotoeri to have the furigana/pronuncation/reading of Japanese kanji display above the kanji characters in a Pages document?

    PeterBreis0807 wrote:
LightwayText is definitely an option anyway.
Yes, it is an option, but not an option I would recommend.
iText Express does not seem to have furigana. It is anyhow not in the same place in the menu as iText Pro. It does have vertical writing, though, and that is not bad.
iText Pro and LightWayText have both vertical writing and furigana.
The real problem with all three applications is that the format of their Japanese features is not outwards compatible. I have not been able to save to any format that can be opened by any other furigana-able application, like OpenOffice or MS Office.
I would hesitate a lot before tying myself to a file format that is supported by just one application or company, and which cannot be opened by other applications. Hence my recommendation of OpenOffice, or, if you have access to a Japanese or English version, MS Word.
If someone finds a way to export the Japanese features to more standard file formats, the situation changes, of course.
