Japanese Titles

Hi All,
Our 'Title' field contains multi-lingual values. These are not translated as titles differ by country and it happens to be an international deployment where users add contacts from different countries and need the ability to select the correct title. So a few of the values would be...

I have had a request to add Japanese values to the piclist, I added "変更者 : 電子メール 外部" as test (I haven't a clue what it means but it's one of the field names translated). These characters seem to show up correctly and I can select them, they don't however appear in anlytics for me. Will there be problems with chacter encoding if we add these values to the picklists when users from the UK, EMEA & APAC see the same list? In the application or analytics?
Thanks

Assuming you know how to use the Kotoeri IM, the key thing is to set the font to a Japanese one, like Osaka. Otherwise you will get squares. Let me know if this does not work for you.

  • Can't get rid of weird Japanese ads on Samsung Galaxy Tab 4

    I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, and one of the first weeks I started using it, this Japanese Assistive Touch type thing appeared, but wasn’t connected with an app I could uninstall to get rid of it. But after a couple weeks, it disappeared without my noticing (or doing anything to cause it to go away). But now (from about several weeks ago) I have started getting these popup ads. However, they are all in Japanese, which leads me to think the Assistive Touch and these ads are connected somehow. When I have accidentally clicked on the ads they try to get me to download their apps (which all have very suspicious permissions). But now I can’t figure out how to make them go away. I have run scans through TrustGo AntiVirus, AVG AntiVirus, Clean Master Antivirus, TrustGo Ad Detector, and Lookout Ad Detector multiple times, and all of them after an initial scan and clear (which only gave basic things and didn’t solve the problem anyway) have told me my system is clean, even though I am still getting the ads. I have run Clean Master’s Junk Files scan, and in the results under the “Obsolete apks” heading, were three apps with Japanese titles, and the words Not Installed underneath them. I told Clean Master to “clean junk”, and the apps disappeared from the list, but the ads were still appearing. Next, I tried running my device in Safe Mode to see if I could pinpoint the problem to a third party app (even though Clean Master had classified them as Not Installed). When I ran it in Safe Mode, I clicked through all the apps available, and no ads appeared. But when I restarted it in Normal Mode, I clicked through all the same apps from Safe Mode, and still no ads appeared. It was only when I went to a third party app that the ads appeared. I went to several third party apps, and ads popped up on almost all of them. However, I’m not sure what to do to now to try to get the ads off. Any suggestions? I would like to avoid doing a factory reset if at all possible.

    Not technically, no, but around the beginning of when I got my tablet in
    July, an Assistive Touch type thing appeared, but I didn't download it.
    That was also in Japanese, but I couldn't figure out a way to delete it.
    However, it somehow disappeared without my noticing or doing anything about
    it. I feel like they're connected. So the issue's been going on for longer
    than from the last app I downloaded. I haven't removed any apps yet to test
    it though.

  • Japanese attachments in Mail

    I am using both an iMac and a Powerbook with latest verison of OS and problem is same on both.
    Encoding has been set to ISO-2022-JP via Terminal and all Japanese subject lines and text in the body of the mail work perfectly.
    However, an attachment with a Japanese title shows up embedded (or attached) to a received mail as a long string of characters (i.e. mojibake) and Mail fails to recognise what type of file the attachment is. Any ideas? All attachments in Roman script work perfectly - I have not been able to test any other non-Roman scripts so am unable to ascertain whether this is a Japanese problem, East Asian scripts problem, or non-Roman scripts problem.

    Attachments I receive. From any source. of any type:
    Word, Excel, .pdf, .jpg, doesn' matter. If the file
    in question contains Japanese characters the entire
    file name is corrupted and Mail doesn't recognise the
    file type.
    Is this a recent change? Normally a problem with the stuff you receive are caused by the sender. Setting the default in Terminal is for outgoings and doesn't normally do anything to incomings, whose encodings are determined by the headers created by the sending program.
    The file you sent me had its title encoded as if it were the subject of a mail message. This is not right, but it seems to me it was most likely done by the sender, not by your system. It could not be recognized because this mail subject type encoding obliterated the file extension .pdf.

  • I have children's books in Japanese, Chinese and Arabic that I am trying to convert into epub formats that ibookstore will accept. My source docs are in ms word or pdf format. I want to use ibooks author for this purpose. Can anyone suggest a solution?

    Is there an easy way of importing the children's books into ibooks author? There is an image on every other page. The books has to be in fixed layout format.
    Any help will be sincerely appreciated. I understand that ibookstore will accept only epub 3.0 formats for Japanese titles. As I stated earlier, my objective is to make those language books available in ibookstore.

    The books has to be in fixed layout format
    If you mean keep the same as original, I wouldn't expect to retain that, sorry.
    You'd be obligated to either copy/paste in sections/blocks of text, images, etc. or insert from Pages/Word, but either way you can expect to have to rework towards whatever 'fixed' layout you need in an iBA book....that can mean significant work in some examples.
    You may want to work with a sample to find out the best workflow in any case.
    As for Arabic support, see this thread: Does iBook Author support Arabic...: Apple Support Communities
    Good luck.

  • How to display Japanese text from an XML file

    Hiya,
    I have various adapted mp3 players [called playlists on my site] which retrieve the songs and song titles/artists from an XML file. One of them plays Japanese music.
    Most of the tracks are in English but I now have a couple of songs with Japanese titles and file names which I can't get to preview/display in Flash Pro CS5 [Mac]. I can type static Japanese text and it displays fine but Flash seems to be having a problem with the Japanese from the XML file.
    Though I can find the English titles, etc, it would be nice if there were a way to display Japanese text from a 'multi-lingual' [English and Japanese] XML file [probably something really easy].
    Thanks a bunch.

  • ITunes account is in Japanese

    I recently upgraded iTunes due to me purchasing a new 2G Touch, but when i go to sign in to my account, everything shows up in Japanese, titles of songs/artists/prices, everything is in Japanese. I have tried changing the settings in itunes but it will not let me do it, every time i go to change them and put my details in again, it just comes up with unable to change as the region is different (or words to that effect). and then just goes back to the itunes store homepage.
    After setting up my ipod with itunes, these setting are now also on my ipod. so i cannot use the itunes store OR the app store as everything is in Japanese. all i want is to get back to having itunes be in GBR when i sign in. if anyone can assist, i will be grateful.

    i think i have a bigger problem, i logged into my account and everything was in totally another language (the last one on the drop down list (==)), the address was different and the credit card details, security question was totally wrong, as was my birthdate. i think my account had been hacked.

  • Foreign language attachment titles messed up

    I often get files with Japanese titles attached to emails. In Mail on both my 4-year-old iMac and 1-year-old MBP, both running 10.8.2, these titles often get all goofy-charactered. Funny thing is, if I go to view my iCloud mail in Safari, the titles are fine. What's up?

    Boxes often means support for the language has not been enabled. These pages describe how to do this:

  • Consolidate Library and Japanese filenames

    I'm using iTunes 8.0.1 on WinXP Pro and I'm having an odd problem. I have a number of Japanese albums and music videos in my library, and I regularly use the Consolidate Library function to keep everything organized. When I change song titles in my library to Japanese and consolidate, the files are renamed into their respective Japanese titles when copied and everything comes out OK.
    However, with music videos, that doesn't happen. Instead, all Japanese characters in the title are turned into underscores in the filename. With an all-Japanese title, this means I get files named like __.m4v. If there happens to be another video with the same number of characters, it gets named __1.m4v.
    I have to think this is a bug. The video titles remain correctly named in the library. Or am I missing something here?

    Yeah, seems like a potential bug or something with the renaming of file names for music videos, either that or for some reason, that file type cant have those characters in the file name.

  • ? about persistent indicator and use of nav tag

    Hi,
    I have read Nancy O's informative article on persistent indicators.  I think I have everything almost working.  However, I get some errors when I validate on W3C validation service.
    The errors I get are:
    Line 22, Column 23: document type does not allow element "body" here
        <body class="live">
    Line 23, Column 9: element "nav" undefined
        <nav>
    Line 37, Column 10: end tag for "body" omitted, but OMITTAG NO was specified
        </div>
    You may have neglected to close an element, or perhaps you meant to "self-close" an element, that is, ending it with "/>" instead of ">".
    Any thoughts on what I have done wrong.  I have pasted the code for both the page and the relevant include below.  Also, I had two questions about the use of the nav.  What happens to my menu when it is viewed in an older browser that doesn't support nav?  Also, could one have an upper and lower menu bar using the nav tag with different CSS properties?

    Regarding my navigation menu bar, I had originally used a  <div id="bottomnavbar"> and then defined in CSS as #bottomnavbar to stylize/format.  However, when was having trouble getting the persistent indicator to work, while discussing this problem another frequent poster told me to not use div for menu bar and instead use nav tag which I did.  However, I still have the concern that folks with older browsers won't be able to view the menu correctly.  From what I have read, I could add the following to the head (after any CSS links) and then the nav menu would be able to be viewed correctly on older browsers.  Am I correct in that assumption?
    <!--[if lt IE 9]>
      <script src="http://html5shiv.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/html5.js"></script>
    <![endif]-->
    Yes, you are correct - the script above makes any html5 tag such as <nav></nav> compatible with IE8 and below. but I personally don't really make much of an effort to support IE8 any longer.
    mojokk wrote:
    if that works, then it sounds as though that would be ok. But I have another page that would have 2 menu bars, one at the top of the header image and one at the bottom head image.  It sounds as though I wouldn't be able to use the nav tag for both since the vertical positioning of the text would be different, so I should go back and use divs for menu bars. Am I correct in this assumption?
    You would give each <nav></nav> a class like:
    <nav class="topNav"></nav>
    <nav class="bottomNav"></nav>
    <nav></nav> is just a container like <div></div> (see below) only with more meaning, ie navigation.
    <div class="topNav"></div>
    <div class="bottomNav"></div>
    Then do as you have always done and style the content in the container/s:
    .topNav {
    .bottomNav {

    One other question, in my CSS I have defined my header's position as fixed (position:fixed;) so the content below will scroll up and one will still see header and menu bar.  However, when one scrolls on the page (Iphone) using touch screen, the text content can shift to right or left.  I assume I need to add something to the CSS of .content to prevent it from moving on the horizon.  Thoughts?
    Difficult to say what is happening in this instance - you probably need to upload the page and provide a url so someone can take a look and see if they are seeing what you are seeing.

  • FAT32 and asiatic language issues

    Hello,
    I have made a backup with a external hd of 500 gb space, formatted in FAT32 (because I wanted to exchange data with mac or windows users).
    Then, I had an issue when I wanted to copy data in the FAT32 disk to my computer, indeed I had what we call in japanese mojibake 文字化け (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mojibake), that is to say changes in display of japanese characters which became something like this :
    So all my files with japanese titles had mojibake issues. I solved the problem when I transfered files with japanese titles in a smaller external hd of 80 gb space, formatted in FAT32 too, and copied from this hd, to my computer.
    Then here is my question : why did it worked ? I have understood nothing. I would be happy to get an explanation if someone have.
    In case it could help, here are details about the two disk :

    In fact before to try to copy my data from the 500 gb external hd to the 80 gb external hd, I tried a lot of things.
    And I didn't understand why, but using iocharset when mounting with utf8, sjis, or something else (I have forgotten the name of the other option but this is something like "euc") didn't work. But indeed, I have read that japanese guys had successfully been able to mount fat32 hd with his option and the other, codepage=cp932.
    But for me, the only one option which worked had been to use the 80 gb hd instead of the 500 gb hd to copy data to my computer.
    ...I'm not sure if my question is clear, nor if I'm clear, but if you don't understand what I'm saying tell me (I'm not native english speaker).

  • Why can't I read Japanese characters on song titles and artists on my itunes

    For some reason all of my Japanese songs titles and artists are in this random jumbled text, and I was wondering if anyone can help me fix it.

    Sorry. I think you misread me. I know you said the software upgrade messed me up and I agree. It was Kobo Support who said the ebook/library book that caused the problem. When I called Kobo Support to see if they had a fix they told me it was my library's problem. I kept going back to the software upgrade and all the trouble shooting I had done - including the paperclip in the back - but the tech just kept getting me to do the same things over and over. You were spot on that they would try to place the blame on something other than their upgrade but they didn't blame ADE. The tech didn't have any new suggestions . I eventually gave up on her and took the device back to its like new settings, unintalled and reinstalled all the software on both my device and pc. It is working now but unfortunately I lost a couple of books.  Thanks for your input.

  • Titles in Japanese come up SCRAMBLED

    I have used iMovie many times to make slideshows/home videos with titles IN ENGLISH, but now I want to do one in Japanese and I've encountered a problem. I can enter the Japanese script as I do in MS Word or Entourage or whatever, and it will convert to the appropriate kanji characters in the text entry box, but when the title preview comes up, the text is scrambled into meaningless symbols. I have tried setting the computer's 1st language as Japanese (through International in system preferences), hoping to get at it that way, but the titles still scramble even when all the menus are in Japanese. My iMovie version is old - 4.0.1, but still very serviceable, at least in English!! Any tips??

    Ok, now how’s THIS for weird...
    I changed int’l settings to Jpns and composed all the titles, no problem. Then I switched the system back to English to do photos, etc. While doing that I decided to change a title, forgetting that I was “supposed to” have the system set to Jpns in order to do so (prior to yesterday, I had been unable to use Jpns titles while in English mode). Well, I get through changing the title (successfully) and then realize that it worked just fine doing a Jpns title while Int’l was set to ENGLISH!!! I really don’t get it. Somehow it “fixed” itself...
    Curiouser and curiouser...
